Pianist Ketil Bjørnstads three ruminative variations on his initial Epigraph No. 1 form the conceptual backbone of this recital, with David Darlings arco bow work on (what sounds like a his bass-extended five-string) cello adding a contrapuntal touch to Variation 1. Variation 2 finds the pianist crystallizing this slow, spare theme to sub-atomic levels of frosty, midnight sun stillness, while on Variation 3 his chords open up and bloom in the manner of . Bjørnstad and Darling also interpret a melange of pre-Baroque and Renaissance music and mix it into a suite of sorts with a select assortment of original compositions. Their contemporary and spontaneous feel is at least in part aided by the expansive, reverberant production of Manfred Eicher and long-time collaborator engineer Jan Erik Kongshaug in the acoustic depths of Rainbor Studio, in Oslo, Norway. Thus, the Pavane of (1543-1623) comes across as a serene Nordic meditation (with some curious minor-key ornaments redolent of the Near East), while the Fantasia of (1583-1625) evokes the courtly dance in surreal slow motion. Often, the very sound of what they do is commensurate with the note values, as on the impressionistic, slightly hazy recollections of Song for TKJD, where Darlings multitrack cellos beckon as if from a dream, or The Lake, where Bjørnstads bell-like upper-register notes glisten like moonlight against the stately pools of chanted cadences and bowed tones. --Chip Ster... -

This is ensemble music with a sense of continuous, collective collaboration, the band taking a fresh look at the canon with inspired versions of Monk, Mingus and Charlie Parker tunes (the tenor dialogues can suggest a Mingus band). Terrific repertoire includes two Charles Mingus tunes: his famous tribute to Lester Young Goodbye Pork Pie Hat, and Pithecanthropus Erectus, a cinematic account of the rise and fall of man (played very noir by the Motian group). Charlie Parkers Cheryl, one of the pieces that first defined bebop for the world. The second exciting chapter in Paul Motians return to ECM is his first album for the label to feature his personal orchestra. Launched in the early 90s as the Electric Bebop Band, it initially set out to destroy bebop (Motians words) at a time when the mood of jazz was resolutely retro. Things didnt work out that way: Motian fell in love with the music all over again, the nature of the instrumentation completely changed the forms dynamics, and he moved through bebop with the group, using it as a vehicle for his own compositions. Bebop and standards are part of the palette - but jazz history is no longer the subject of the music. Its wider programme merited a name change, so henceforth its simply the Paul Motian Band.
