Book : Leonard Cohen The Mystical Roots Of Genius -...

-Titulo Original : Leonard Cohen The Mystical Roots Of Genius-Fabricante : Bloomsbury Continuum-Descripcion Original: About the Author Harry Freedman has a DPhil in Aramaic from the University of Oxford and retired from a successful business life to write. He is Britains leading author of popular works of Jewish culture and history. His publications include The Talmud: A Biography, Kabbalah: Secrecy, Scandal and the Soul, The Murderous History of Bible Translations,The Gospels Veiled Agenda and Leonard Cohen. He has written for the Guardian, Jewish Chronicle, Jewish Quarterly, Judaism Today and contributed to the Encyclopaedia of Modern Jewish Culture. A spellbinding and unorthodox look into the life of Leonard Cohen, and the way his experiences with religion and spirituality produced one of the greatest musicians of our time.Leonard Cohens music is studded with allusions to Jewish and Christian tradition, as well as Kabbalah and Zen. In his 1994 classic Hallelujah he opens with the words Now Ive heard there was a secret chord, That David played, and it pleased the Lord… the baffled king composing Hallelujah. As the song progresses, Cohen takes us on a tour of the Old Testament, he sings of Samson having his hair cut by Delilah, Moses asking Gods name and we even meet the blasphemer from the Book of Leviticus. This book is about the ethos, origins and traditions in Cohens lyrics. His grandfather was a Rabbi. He had grown up in an observant Jewish family; one with problems. His father died when he was nine, his mother suffered from depression and he himself underwent prolonged dark periods. His Irish catholic nanny took him to Church. He was as familiar with Christian traditions as he was Jewish. In his early works indeed he seemed more engaged with Christianity than with Judaism. But one of the notable features of his work is how he switches with ease from Judaism to Christianity. He is not concerned with confessional barriers, they simply impede access to the deep well of spiritual lore from which he draws. Kabbalah also features in his imagery. He became increasingly interested in Zen. In 1990 he moved into a Zen monastery as a permanent resident, apparently becoming a Buddhist monk. He died in 2016.Here then is a book that looks deep into the soul and imagination of one of the greatest singers and lyricists of our time. Here is the landscape of his soul. This is not a biography but a biographical narrative into the treatment of each song or theme, so that by the end the reader will in fact have a good understanding of Cohens life story. Review “Leonard Cohen: The Mystical Roots of Genius is the book so many of us have been waiting for. In it, Harry Freedman explores, in an entrancingly original and totally accessible way, the spiritual inspiration that is such an integral part of Leonard’s work. Beautifully written, this is among the finest volumes on Cohen’s life and lyrics. It’s an exploration which would have intrigued and engaged Leonard himself.” - John McKenna, writer and friend of Leonard Cohen“Leonard Cohen taught us that even in the midst of darkness there is light, in the midst of hatred there is love, with our dying breath we can still sing Hallelujah.” - The late Rabbi Lord Jonathan Sacks“For those who know and want to know even more, this account of Leonard Cohen’s preoccupations and what he made from his knowledge of the religious, is fascinating. A cultural story of a cultural giant.” - Susie Orbach, psychotherapist and author“Freedman’s book highlights even further layers of meaning to the songs which speak so profoundly to so many of us, regardless of faith or spiritual background.” - National Herald“An intriguing and specific look at the traditions and stories that influenced a brilliant songwriter.” - Library Journal“There have been several books written about Cohen since his death but none of them, until now has gone deep into his soul. This is not a biography of the man but rather a biography of the the landscape of his soul...Freedman explores song by song how C...

Book : When America Stopped Being Great A History Of The...

-Titulo Original : When America Stopped Being Great A History Of The Present-Fabricante : Bloomsbury Continuum-Descripcion Original: About the Author Nick Bryant is known for being one of the BBCs most senior foreign correspondents, with postings in Washington DC, South Asia, Australia and, most recently, New York. He is the author of The Bystander: John F. Kennedy and the Struggle for Black Equality, Confessions from Correspondentland and The Rise and Fall of Australia. Nick studied history at Cambridge and has a doctorate in American history from Oxford. The Washington Post has noted: Bryant is a genuine rarity. A Brit who understands America. In 2021, he left the BBC, and now lives in Sydney with his wife and children. Nick Bryant is brilliant. He has a way of showing you what youve been missing from the whole story whilst never leaving you feeling stupid. - Emily MaitlisBryant is a genuine rarity, a Brit who understands America - Washington PostIn When America Stopped Being Great, veteran reporter and BBC New York correspondent Nick Bryant reveals how Americas decline paved the way for Donald Trumps rise, sowing division and leaving the country vulnerable to its greatest challenge of the modern era.Deftly sifting through almost four decades of American history, from post-Cold War optimism, through the scandal-wracked nineties and into the new millennium, Bryant unpacks the mistakes of past administrations, from Ronald Reagans celebrity presidency to Barack Obamas failure to adequately address income and racial inequality. He explains how the historical clues, unseen by many (including the media) paved the way for an outsider to take power and a country to slide towards disaster. As Bryant writes, rather than being an aberration, Trumps presidency marked the culmination of so much of what had been going wrong in the United States for decades - economically, racially, politically, culturally, technologically and constitutionally.A personal elegy for an America lost, unafraid to criticise actors on both sides of the political divide, When America Stopped Being Great takes the long view, combining engaging storytelling with recent history to show how the country moved from the optimism of Reagans Morning in America to the darkness of Trumps American Carnage. It concludes with some of the most dramatic events in recent memory, in an America torn apart by a bitterly polarised election, racial division, the national catastrophe of the coronavirus and the threat to US democracy evidenced by the storming of Capitol Hill. Review “Bryant has an encyclopedic knowledge of public affairs and popular culture ... The result is riveting, often revelatory, crammed with facts … The great strength of Bryants book is his ability to make large structural changes vivid through outsized personalities and his own personal experiences … Readable, powerful and instructive.” Washington Post“A masterclass from an outstanding chronicler of modern America ... Insightful, thoughtful, and beautifully written.” Orla Guerin“Nick Bryant writes like a dream, and is one of those very rare things on TV - a man who makes you want to turn up the sound. His eye for description is sublime, and he has a way of showing you what youve been missing from the whole story, whilst never leaving you feeling stupid.” Emily Maitlis“An absolutely belting achievement ... An elegy for a lost nation and a lost cause.” Justin Webb“There are all too many people who can opine about the United States but there are very few with Nick Bryants depth of knowledge, experience and empathy for the country and his ability to communicate intelligently, engagingly and entertainingly.” Nick Robinson“Bryant is a genuine rarity, a Brit who understands America” Washington Post“A scathing indictment of the polarization and degradation that has transformed the US … [A]n adroit political critique.” Kirkus Reviews“Few outsiders explain America better than Nick Bryant or write about it as well. This is a must-read guide to an extraordinary time” Katty Ka...

Book : The War Came To Us Life And Death In Ukraine -...

-Titulo Original : The War Came To Us Life And Death In Ukraine-Fabricante : Bloomsbury Continuum-Descripcion Original: A breathtaking exploration of Ukraines past, present, and future, and a heartbreaking account of the war against Russia, written by the leading journalist of the conflict. When Russian President Vladimir Putin launched his unprovoked, full-scale invasion of Ukraine just before dawn on 24 February 2022, it marked his latest and most overt attempt to brutally conquer the country, and reshaped the world order. Christopher Miller, the Ukraine correspondent for the Financial Times and the foremost journalist covering the country, was there on the ground when the first Russian missiles struck and troops stormed over the border. But the seeds of Russias war against Ukraine and the West were sown more than a decade earlier. This is the definitive, inside story of its long fight for freedom. Told through Millers personal experiences, vivid front-line dispatches and illuminating interviews with unforgettable characters, The War Came To Us takes readers on a riveting journey through the key locales and pivotal events of Ukraines modern history. From the coal-dusted, sunflower-covered steppe of the Donbas in the far east to the heart of the Euromaidan revolution camp in Kyiv; from the Black Sea shores of Crimea, where Russian troops stealthily annexed Ukraines peninsula, to the bloody battlefields where Cossacks roamed before the Kremlins warlords ruled with iron fists; and through the horror and destruction wrought by Russian forces in Bucha, Bakhmut, Mariupol, and beyond. With candor, wit and sensitivity, Miller captures Ukraine in all its glory: vast, defiant, resilient, and full of wonder. A breathtaking narrative that is at times both poignant and inspiring, The War Came To Us is the story of an American who fell in love with a foreign place and its people - and witnessed them do extraordinary things to escape the long shadow of their former imperial ruler and preserve their independence...
