  • Book : He Must Like You - Younge-Ullman, Danielle

Book : He Must Like You - Younge-Ullman, Danielle

-Titulo Original : He Must Like You-Fabricante : Viking Books For Young Readers-Descripcion Original: An authentic, angry, and surprisingly funny and romantic novel about sexual harassment, from award-winning author Danielle Younge-Ullman. Libbys having a rough senior year. Her older brother absconded with his college money and is bartending on a Greek island. Her dad just told her shes got to pay for college herself, and hes evicting her when she graduates so he can Airbnb her room. A drunken hook-up with her coworker Kyle has left her upset and confused. So when Perry Ackerman, serial harasser and the most handsy customer at The Goat where she waitresses, pushes her over the edge, she can hardly be blamed for dupming a pitcher of sangria on his head. Unfortunately, Perry is a local industry hero, the restaurants most important customer, and Libbys moms boss. Now Libby has to navigate the fallout of her outburst, find an apartment, and deal with her increasing rage at the guys whove screwed up her life--and her increasing crush on the one guy who truly gets her. As timely as it is timeless, He Must Like You is a story about consent, rage, and revenge, and the potential we all have to be better people. From School Library Journal Gr 9 Up-When the decisions of Libbys shit disturber dad leave her needing money for rent and tuition, she gets a server job. But the sandy-haired teens time gets cut short after a colleague sexually assaults her, prompting her to act rashly against an inappropriate customer who is extremely influential in her small town. Despite her resiliency, the combined burden of money troubles, family issues, sexual assault, sexual harassment, and being the center of a scandal drags her down, though she takes solace in her protective friend Emma and her burgeoning relationship with Noah. Bits of solidarity and normalcy lighten the load for Libby, and for readers. Younge-Ullman focuses on the idea of consent. She doesnt shy away from the thorny, gray areas and deliberately demonstrates the role communication has in preventing and healing from bad situations. While Libbys levelheaded narration reveals discouraging truths about the treatment of women, the book ultimately shows that women dont need to be diplomatic, and that harassment wont be tolerated. At first the title might seem like a misnomer, when it is in fact an eye-opening observation about a harmful, ingrained mindset that must be stamped out. VERDICT Younge-Ullmans genuine, informed, and engaging narrative safely guides readers through many facets of consent, relationships, and the treatment of women. It could prove a valuable resource to any teens education.-Rachel Forbes, Oakville P.L., Ont. Review One of the Ontario Library Associations 2020 Best Bets selection, Young Adult Fiction categoryPraise for He Must Like You: “There are few writers of any stripe capable of tackling important, tough topics with as much grace, heart, humor, and righteous fury as Danielle Younge-Ullman and nowhere is that more abundantly on display than in He Must Like You. This is a must-read.” - Jeff Zentner, Morris Award-winning author of The Serpent King “This novel opens a much-needed conversation about consent, boldly addressing personal and professional assault in an empowering, engrossing read. A must for young women.”- Lori Goldstein, author of Screen Queens Inspired by the well-intentioned but demeaning title phrase that girls hear when boys mistreat them, Younge-Ullman has produced a spot-on story that educates and illuminates the gray areas of sexual consent. Libby’s experiences with the adult offender are textbook examples of the indignities women have suffered in public and in private, and her male friends’ reactions speak volumes. Realistic fiction with lessons for all.-- Booklist “The novel takes on the topic of nonconsent and how deeply it is baked into male-female interactions in American society, a subject as fraught as things can get.” --Kirkus Reviews“[C]andidly considers rape cultur...

Chapter 1WHEN I STEPPED out into the bright sunlight from the darkness of the movie house, I had only two things on my mind: Paul Newman and a ride home. I was wishing I looked like Paul Newman-he looks tough and I don’t-but I guess my own looks aren’t so bad. I have light-brown, almost-red hair and greenish-gray eyes. I wish they were more gray, because I hate most guys that have green eyes, but I have to be content with what I have. My hair is longer than a lot of boys wear theirs, squared off in back and long at the front and sides, but I am a greaser and most of my neighborhood rarely bothers to get a haircut. Besides, I look better with long hair.I had a long walk home and no company, but I usually lone it anyway, for no reason except that I like to watch movies undisturbed so I can get into them and live them with the actors. When I see a movie with someone it’s kind of uncomfortable, like having someone read your book over your shoulder. I’m different that way. I mean, my second-oldest brother, Soda, who is sixteen-going-on-seventeen, never cracks a book at all, and my oldest brother, Darrel, who we call Darry, works too long and...

I dont fear change coming, And so I sing along. In this stirring, much-anticipated picture book by presidential inaugural poet and activist Amanda Gorman, anything is possible when our voices join together. As a young girl leads a cast of characters on a musical journey, they learn that they have the power to make changes-big or small-in the world, in their communities, and in most importantly, in themselves. With lyrical text and rhythmic illustrations that build to a dazzling crescendo by #1 New York Times bestselling illustrator Loren Long, Change Sings is a triumphant call to action for everyone to use their abilities to make a difference. From School Library Journal Gr 1-3-A celebrated young poet and perennially bestselling illustrator pair up to invite readers on a musical celebration of change. Building a story on Gormans declamatory lines-I can hear change humming/ In its loudest, proudest song./ I dont fear change coming,/ And so I sing along-in typically polished, romanticized scenes, Long follows a small Black child carrying a big, beautifully decorated guitar as she gathers a thoroughly diverse group of young musicians to clean up a neatly littered playground, build a ramp for a child in a wheelchair, offer a meal to a homeless mom and son, and finally march beneath a huge urban mural. It proclaims, We are the change. I dont make a taller fence, the poet writes, But fight to build a better bridge. Readers will have to look elsewhere for leads to specific ways and means, but Gormans soaring appeal to sing along joins a long chorus of like calls and may kindle a fresh spate of young social activists. VERDICT So rich are both the art and the verses in uplifting imagery that its hard to imagine any young audience remaining unstirred by this call to be the change they want to see.-John Peters, Childrens Literature Consultant, NY Review “In rich language and vivid art, this hopeful celebration of the life-affirming power of change to ripple out into a better future is irresistible. But there is something incredibly sad beneath all of this beauty and comfort--a tragedy that happened years ago, shadowing Moonacre Manor and the town around it--and Maria is determined to learn about it, change it, and give her own life story a happy ending. But what can one solitary girl do? About the Author Elizabeth Goudge was born in 1900 in Somerset, England. A terrible sound . . .In mid-gallop Maria was halted by a strange and terrible sound, a thin high screaming that came threading through the happy sounds of the wind and the crying gulls and Periwinkle’s galloping feet, and pushing into her heart like a sharp needle. She pulled in her pony and sat listening, her heart beating fast with sudden fear. Away to her right, beyond a sombre belt of pine-trees, was a deep hollow filled with gorse and blackberry bushes, and from it came the frightening sound. Somewhere down there some child or animal was being hurt. She hesitated for only a moment, and then, gulping down the fear that had come up like a hard lump in her throat, she turned Periwinkle and rode hard for the hollow beyond the pines. . . .“For imaginative readers . . . this tale will have a strong appeal. There are richness of detail and a lovely use of color and light-sunshine, moonlight, and shadows, symbolically contrasted-to catch the fancy, and a spiritual quality in this parable of greed and pride vanquished by innocence and goodwill.”-The New York Times“Fantasy and reality meet on equal terms in an exciting mystery story in which all of the characters, both humans and animals, come alive, and stay alive from start to finish.”-The Horn BookOTHER PUFFIN BOOKS YOU MAY ENJOYFive Children and It E. Book : How It All Blew Up - Ahmadi, Arvin

-Titulo Original : How It All Blew Up-Fabricante : Viking Books For Young Readers-Descripcion Original: Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda goes to Italy in Arvin Ahmadis newest incisive look at identity and what it means to find yourself by running away.Eighteen-year-old Amir Azadi always knew coming out to his Muslim family would be messy--he just didnt think it would end in an airport interrogation room. But when faced with a failed relationship, bullies, and blackmail, running away to Rome is his only option. Right?Soon, late nights with new friends and dates in the Sistine Chapel start to feel like second nature... until his old life comes knocking on his door. Now, Amir has to tell the whole truth and nothing but the truth to a US Customs officer, or risk losing his hard-won freedom. At turns uplifting and devastating, How It All Blew Up is Arvin Ahmadis most powerful novel yet, a celebration of how lifes most painful moments can live alongside the riotous, life-changing joys of discovering who you are. From School Library Journal Gr 9 Up-First let me get one thing straight: Im not a terrorist. Im gay. So begins this fast-paced coming out/coming-of-age/coming home story. Amir Azadi keeps a mental scorecard weighing the odds of rejection if his parents learn hes gay. Hes decided to wait until college to start real life. Then the blackmail starts, and suddenly Amir has skipped graduation and hopped a plane to Rome. This isnt the full plot-its barely the premise, and the whole story is told via monologue: The answers given by Amir and his family during questioning by Customs and Border Protection. Readers must accept that the airport interrogation is not where the drama lies either, but rather a clever frame, contrasting the unspoken and serious assumptions that put Amirs family in airport jail with the idiosyncratic, sometimes ridiculous, and always complex truths of who they really are. The interview transcripts cover Amirs arrival in Italy, his adoption by a group of gay men in their thirties, and the series of poor romantic decisions that immediately precede his return. Among these friends is Jahan, also of Iranian descent, who awards Amir points every time he learns about gay icons or queer culture. As Amirs Persian and gay identities start to feel like an asset, hes no longer willing to hide who he is. VERDICT A funny and propulsive read, nuanced and full of heart.-Miriam DesHarnais, Towson Univ., Baltimore?(c) Copyright 2011. Library Journals LLC, a wholly owned subsidiary of Media Source, Inc.
