(Who HQ Now)-Fabricante : Penguin Workshop-Descripcion Original: The inspiring story of the seven-time Super Bowl champion, told in the new Who HQ Now format for trending topics. On February 7, 2021, Tom Brady lifted the Vince Lombardi Trophy into the air for the seventh time in his career. After winning the Super Bowl six times with the New England Patriots, this was Bradys first win with his new team, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The record-breaking win further solidified what many people had already believed for two decades: Tom Brady is the GOAT: Greatest Of All Time. This moving story details the life of Tom Brady and the victories that led him to become the 264-game-winning NFL quarterback we cheer for today. About the Author James Buckley Jr. has written more than fifty books for kids, including Who Is Pele? and Who Was Roberto Clemente? Excerpt. © Reprinted by permission. All rights reserved. Who Is Tom Brady? Tom Brady looked up at the clock on the stadium scoreboard. He saw that his team, the New England Patriots, had just ninety seconds left in Super Bowl XXXVI (36). He had to lead them down the field to try to win the game, which was tied 17--17. Tom called the play and clapped his hands in the huddle. “Let’s go!” he yelled. Fans in the stands and watching at home cheered as Tom completed a pass to J. R. Redmond. Tom then made four more successful passes. The Patriots got closer and closer to the end zone. Finally, they reached the thirty--yard line. Only seven seconds remained on the clock. Tom then watched nervously from the sidelines as kicker Adam Vinatieri tried a forty--eight--yard field goal. Adam made it! New England won 20--17! Tom and the Patriots were Super Bowl champions! He was also named the game’s Most Valuable Player (MVP). Tom had come a long way to reach that Super Bowl, the first of a record seven that he would go on to win. He had not started playing football until ninth grade. He sat on the bench in both high school and college, waiting for his chance. Even after playing well in college, he had waited impatiently as National Football League (NFL) teams chose six other quarterbacks ahead of him in the NFL Draft. So when he finally got his big chance with the Patriots in 2001, he made the most of it. Since then, Tom Brady has become the best quarterback in NFL history. He has thrown more touchdown passes than any other player. Tom’s seven Super Bowl titles number more than any NFL team! He is known as the GOAT--the Greatest of All Time. In more than twenty seasons, he has amazed teammates and opponents, and thrilled fans. He even switched teams at the age of forty--three to win his seventh Super Bowl. From the bench to the top of the sport, Tom has had the greatest career in NFL history. But how did Tom become the GOAT? Chapter 1: Tommy Thomas Brady Jr. was born August 3, 1977, in San Mateo, California. His family and friends called him Tommy. Tommy’s parents, Tom Sr. and Galynn, both loved sports. His three older sisters were all top athletes. Maureen was a softball pitcher who won 111 games in high school, and would become an All--American player in college. Julie was a college soccer player. Nancy was a high--school softball star. Tom Sr. encouraged all of his children to compete: “Everything we did--and I mean everything, [even] running home from church--everything was a competition. I guess it made things really fun, at least for the winner.” As the youngest, Tommy lost a lot-and he didn’t like it. Once while golfing with his dad, Tommy tossed his club in anger after a bad shot. He was sent to wait in the car while his dad finished playing. Tommy started playing baseball when he was very young, taking part in T--ball and youth league games. At first, his parents prevented him from playing football because they thought it was too rough. That was okay with Tommy--for a while. “I loved baseball,” he said. “The high school I went to was a good baseball...

Book : Where Is The Bermuda Triangle? - Stine, Megan

-Titulo Original : Where Is The Bermuda Triangle?-Fabricante : Penguin Workshop-Descripcion Original: Who doesnt love a great mystery? This book presents the eerie accidents and unexplained disappearances that have occurred in the region known as the Bermuda Triangle. Even before it was named, the Bermuda Triangle--roughly bounded by Miami, Bermuda, and Puerto Rico--had gained a mythic reputation. The Bermuda Triangle became famous for making boats and ships vanish, and for snatching planes right out of the sky. But are these stories true? And if they are true, is there a more sensible reason that refutes the bad karma of the region? With so many mystifying events to learn about, readers will love disappearing into this story. About the Author Megan Stine has written several books for young readers, including Where Is the White House?, Who Was Marie Curie?, Who Was Ulysses S. Grant?, Who Is Michelle Obama?, and Where Is Machu Picchu? She lives in Clinton, Connecticut. Excerpt. © Reprinted by permission. All rights reserved. Where Is the Bermuda Triangle? On a beautiful sunny afternoon in 1945, five airplanes took off from a runway in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. The planes were US Navy bombers, but they weren’t going to drop bombs. They were just out on a training run. The pilots were supposed to fly east, over the ocean, and then go north for a while before heading back home. The whole flight was supposed to last only two hours. The trip was called Flight 19. But somehow, the pilots got lost and confused. They didn’t know which way to go. The officer in charge had two compasses to show him directions. But both stopped working. He tried to contact the control tower for help, but his radio wasn’t working well. Then another pilot flying nearby heard they were lost. He offered to come help, but the officer told him not to. Before the day was over, all five planes had disappeared without a trace! The navy quickly sent another plane out to search for them-and it vanished, too! How could this possibly happen? How could six planes and twenty-seven men vanish into thin air, never having sent an emergency signal? All the planes had life rafts on board. If the pilots had to land their planes in the ocean, wouldn’t at least some of the pilots have survived? For weeks, the navy searched a wide area of the sea. They never found a single thing-not even a piece of a broken plane floating in the water. Even now, more than seventy years later, the story makes people wonder whether there is something strange and unusual about the area the planes were flying through. In fact, it is just one of the stories about the Bermuda Triangle-the name given to a triangular area in the ocean, off the coast of Florida, where dozens of ships and planes have disappeared. Some stories say the Bermuda Triangle sucks ships into the sea. Others say that planes can enter the Bermuda Triangle but never escape. Over the years, ships have been found floating in the water-abandoned ships in perfect condition, with food still cooking on the stove, but no people on board! Huge oceangoing ships have been said to break in half in the treacherous seas. One year, at Christmastime, two men went out on a boat only a mile from the Florida coast. They wanted to gaze at the Christmas lights back on shore. They hit something in the water and called the Coast Guard for help. But when the Coast Guard arrived twenty minutes later, they had vanished. They were never seen or heard from again. To add to the spookiness of this story, their boat was called the Witchcraft. This is the story of the mysterious area known as the Bermuda Triangle-who vanished, how they disappeared, and why. Chapter 1: The Deadly Triangle Where, exactly, is the dangerous area of water that-according to stories-has been the cause of so much tragedy? Draw three lines on a map connecting Bermuda, Puerto Rico, and Miami, Florida. The lines will make a triangle in the ocean. That’s the location of the Bermuda Triangl...

It was June 26, 1996, the night of the National Basketball Association--the NBA--draft, when professional teams select new players. Wearing a dark suit on his slim six--foot, six--inch frame, Kobe Bryant, seventeen, was waiting for his name to be called. Just days earlier, Kobe had graduated from Lower Merion High School outside of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He was considered the best high--school basketball player in the nation. High--school players usually went to college to prepare themselves for entering the NBA draft. Kobe was different. He wanted to become a professional right away.“Playing in the NBA has been my dream since I was three,” Kobe said. The Philadelphia 76ers--Kobe’s hometown team--had the first pick in the draft. They chose Allen Iverson from Georgetown University. The first twelve teams all chose college players. Finally, the Charlotte Hornets selected Kobe with the thirteenth pick.Once his name was announced, Kobe put on a Hornets baseball cap before he walked to the podium to greet the TV cameras.Kobe, though, would never play one minute for the Hornets. Even as he smiled in front of the cameras, Charlotte was already talking with the Los Angeles Lakers about trading Kobe for an experienced center, Vlade Divac. The Hornets, with number thirteen, had a much higher pick than the Lakers, who had the twenty--fourth selection. Charlotte chose somebody who would be a valuable trade for Los Angeles. The Hornets already had all--stars who played shooting guard, Kobe’s position. They wanted someone like the seven-foot-one-inch-tall Divac.Kobe was grinning on the outside, but the details of the draft would stick with him. The fact that twelve--really thirteen--teams had passed on him would fuel his drive to be the best for the next twenty years.Kobe did become one of the NBA’s greatest players of all time. He won five NBA titles, led the league in scoring two times, and was an eighteen--time All--Star.But on the day of the 1996 NBA draft, seventeen--year--old Kobe still had his whole career in front of him--and he was ready to play. Chapter 1A Kid Named Kobe Kobe Bryant was born on August 23, 1978, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. His first name came from a type of Japanese beef that his parents had noticed on a restaurant menu. Kobe’s mom, Pamela, said later they always knew their son would be special, and that is why they choose that unique name. Kobe’s dad, Joe Bryant, was a professional basketball player for the 76ers. When Kobe was three, he loved to watch his dad play on television. While he watched, Kobe would often run down the hallway, jump onto a mini trampoline, and slam a ball into an eight--foot--high plastic hoop. When Kobe was six, his dad’s basketball career changed his family’s lives. Joe had played for eight seasons and had been traded to two different teams. In 1983, he moved his whole family to Rieti...

-Titulo Original : Who Were The Tuskegee Airmen? (who Was?)-Fabricante : Penguin Workshop-Descripcion Original: Its up, up, and away with the Tuskegee Airmen, a heroic group of African American military pilots who helped the United States win World War II. During World War II, black Americans were fighting for their country and for freedom in Europe, yet they had to endure a totally segregated military in the United States, where they werent considered smart enough to become military pilots. After acquiring government funding for aviation training, civil rights activists were able to kickstart the first African American military flight program in the US at Tuskegee University in Alabama. While this book details thrilling flight missions and the grueling training sessions the Tuskegee Airmen underwent, it also shines a light on the lives of these brave men who helped pave the way for the integration of the US armed forces. About the Author Sherri L. Smith is a childrens book author, and this is her first book in the Who HQ series. She currently lives in Los Angeles, California. All rights reserved. Who Were the Tuskegee Airmen? January 20, 1945 The plane was not going to make it back to the airfield in Italy. US Airman Larry Fleischer shivered inside the B-24 bomber as it limped through the skies. World War II had been raging for more than five years. In late 1941, the United States had joined with England, Canada, and other countries to defeat Nazi Germany and its allies. B-24s played a major role in winning the war. Fleischer’s plane, however, had been hit while dropping bombs on a Nazi air base in Austria. Two of the engines were out. The bombing doors in the belly of the plane had jammed open. The wind was roaring in at sixty degrees below zero. Fleischer had already lost a boot trying to unstick the doors. Now, he was afraid he might lose his foot to frostbite. The plane needed to land soon. But where? Down below, the Italian coast was fast approaching. Fleischer and the rest of the crew scouted for a safe landing area. It was the copilot who found their best hope. He spotted an airfield, but it was one that didn’t show up on any of their charts. “We really were expecting it to be a German field because why wouldn’t it be on one of our maps?” Fleischer recalled. If that were true, the pilot and crew would be taken as prisoners. But there was no other choice. The pilot carefully brought the plane in for a landing and saw that this was no German base. The runway was lined with American planes! Splashes of crimson paint marked these P-51 Mustangs as Red Tails. These fighter planes were famous for protecting American bombers in enemy skies. The Red Tails had saved Fleischer and his crew on more than one bombing mission. As another crewman put it, “They were our lifesavers.” Fleischer and his crew were so relieved! They went out to greet the approaching soldiers, eager to finally meet the Red Tails face-to-face instead of in the air. What they saw was the surprise of their lives. “These are all black guys!” Fleischer remembered thinking. “It was a complete shock!” Why was it so surprising to see black pilots in 1945? Fleischer was a white guy from New York. His entire crew of ten men was white. The only black people Fleischer had ever seen in the army were cooks and waiters. Until now. The Red Tails weren’t just any combat pilots. They were the famous Tuskegee (say: tus-KEE-gee) Airmen. They were the first airplane pilots of color ever in the US military. ( Military means the armed forces of a nation.) But to Fleischer and his all-white crew, their existence was “more secret than the atom bomb!” Chapter 1: Two Americas By the end of 1939, World War II had broken out in Europe. The United States was not involved in the fighting yet. But the mil...

(Who Was?)-Fabricante : Penguin Workshop-Descripcion Original: Learn how this heroic group of American Indian men created a secret, unbreakable code and helped the US win major battles during World War II in this new addition to the #1 New York Times bestselling series.By the time the United States joined the Second World War in 1941, the fight against Nazi and Axis powers had already been under way for two years. In order to win the war and protect its soldiers, the US Marines recruited twenty-nine Navajo men to create a secret code that could be used to send military messages quickly and safely across battlefields. In this new book within the #1 New York Times bestelling series, author James Buckley Jr. explains how these brave and intelligent men developed their amazing code, recounts some of their riskiest missions, and discusses how the country treated them before, during, and after the war. Excerpt. © Reprinted by permission. All rights reserved. Who Were the Navajo Code Talkers? As loud explosions echoed off the rocky island, Samuel Holiday leaped off the landing craft as the huge metal machine slammed into the beach. Samuel was a United States Marine. And the beach was on Iwo Jima, an island in the Pacific Ocean that was held by the Japanese as they battled the United States in World War II. Bullets pinged all around Samuel, while bombs sent huge plumes of black sand into the air. Samuel did his best to walk toward a safe position, but the sand was loose and shifted constantly. Every step was a huge struggle. As he plunged ahead, he saw Marines who had been killed almost as soon as they stepped ashore, lying where they fell. Samuel clutched his rifle and shouldered the big radio on his back. He had to make it through safely. He had an important job to do. Samuel was one of the Navajo code talkers. These specially trained Marines made sure that thousands of US soldiers, sailors, ships, and planes could get their messages through safely without the Japanese being able to read them. Using their Dine language, the code talkers had become a vital part of the US Marines’ mission. Without a secure way to communicate, that mission on Iwo Jima might end in disaster. Samuel dug out a place where he was safe from bullets for the moment. He and his partner, Dan Akee, set up their radio gear. “Bil--dah--has--tanh--ya,” Samuel said over the radio. “Al--tah--je--jay yoehi ashdla!” On the other end of the call, another Navajo code talker was listening. He told his own partner what Samuel had said: “Pinned down! Attack Sector Five!” The order was passed to Marine artillery. Moments later, bombs landed in front of Samuel, destroying the secret position of the enemy soldiers. The Japanese radio operators who were also listening had no idea what Samuel had said, and their location had been exposed. Samuel and the other code talkers were in constant danger on Iwo Jima. “The [gun]fire was so intense, men were being killed all around me, and we were pinned down and couldn’t move,” remembered code talker Teddy Draper. “I kept wondering if I was going to live through the day or be killed in my foxhole.” (A foxhole is a dugout pit big enough to hold one or two soldiers.) Teddy and Samuel did live, and thanks to more than four hundred Navajo code talkers, so did thousands of their fellow Marines. For almost four years, from 1942 to 1945, the code talkers fought in battle after battle. Their unbreakable code helped make sure the enemy could not intercept military communications and that Marines were protected. The code, created using the Navajo language, was never broken. Then, for almost twenty--five years after the war ended, their story was kept as secret as their code--but now it can be told. Chapter 1: The Navajo For more than one thousand years, Native Americans of...
