Book : Ground Zero - Gratz, Alan

-Titulo Original : Ground Zero-Fabricante : Scholastic Press-Descripcion Original: The instant #1 New York Times bestseller. In time for the twentieth anniversary of 9/11, master storyteller Alan Gratz (Refugee) delivers a pulse-pounding and unforgettable take on history and hope, revenge and fear -- and the stunning links between the past and present. September 11, 2001, New York City: Brandon is visiting his dad at work, on the 107th floor of the World Trade Center. Out of nowhere, an airplane slams into the tower, creating a fiery nightmare of terror and confusion. And Brandon is in the middle of it all. Can he survive -- and escape? September 11, 2019, Afghanistan: Reshmina has grown up in the shadow of war, but she dreams of peace and progress. When a battle erupts in her village, Reshmina stumbles upon a wounded American soldier named Taz. Should she help Taz -- and put herself and her family in mortal danger? Two kids. One devastating day. Nothing will ever be the same. From School Library Journal Gr 4-7-Gratz (Refugee) writes a searing indictment of Americas involvement in Afghanistan, told through two gripping parallel narratives. On September 11, 2001, nine-year-old Brandon accompanies his father to his job at New York Citys World Trade Center. The two are separated during the ensuing terrorist attack, and, with help from others, Brandon survives. Eighteen years later, 11-year-old Reshmina, living in a remote Afghan village, sees her country and family devastated by the Taliban and the U.S. military, despite both armies claims of protection. Brandons and Reshminas lives intertwine in a fateful encounter that challenges Americas policies as well as its presence in Afghanistan, and puts a human face on the resulting suffering. Vivid details immerse readers in the two disparate settings. The plot starts at a heart-pounding pace and never relents: Brandon and Reshminas lives are in danger at every turn. In a superbly structured plot, the two protagonists experience similar perils, and both respond with determination and hope. Gratz provides readers with a brief history of Afghanistan and its occupation by foreign powers. Speaking through Reshmina, he concludes the United States had surely destroyed Afghanistan. The book includes extensive back matter, making it an excellent choice for classroom discussion. • Book : Frost - Kozlowsky, M.P.

    Book : Frost - Kozlowsky, M.P.

-Titulo Original : Frost-Fabricante : Scholastic Press-Descripcion Original: Cinder meets The Walking Dead in a chilling futuristic fairy tale that will reboot everything you thought about family, love, and what it means to be human. 16-year-old Frost understands why shes spent her entire life in an abandoned apartment building. The ruined streets below are hunting grounds for rogue robots and Eaters. She understands why shes never met a human besides her father. She even understands why he forbids her to look for medicine for her dying pet. But the thing is, its not her real father giving the orders . . . Its his memories. Before he died, Frosts father uploaded his consciousness into their robot servant. But the technology malfunctioned, and now her father fades in and out. So when Frost learns that there might be medicine on the other side of the ravaged city, she embarks on a dangerous journey to save the only living creature she loves. With only a robot as a companion, Frost must face terrors of all sorts, from outrunning the vicious Eaters. . .to talking to the first boy shes ever set eyes on. But can a girl whos only seen the world through books and dusty windows survive on her own? From School Library Journal Gr 7 Up-Described as a dystopian fairy tale, Kozlowskys novel will attract many genre YA readers. Sixteen-year-old Frost must cross a treacherous landscape, accompanied by her robot caretaker, in order to save her beloved pet from death. Out of the apartment she lived her whole life in, Frost discovers the Eaters and rogue robots that plague the world after the Days of Bedlam. The protagonist must fight her way through many obstacles to reach her beacon of hope, the Battery. While written as a YA novel, this will also appeal to younger readers, as there is very little strong language and the violence is not overly graphic. The main character does feel younger than her years, which could be attributed to how she grew up. There is wonderful world-building, but the pacing is slightly off. Certain events happen very quickly, while others drag. There is also a disconnect between the story lines with the Eaters and the robots. It feels as though two different worlds were pushed together. Readers may also assume this is a fairy-tale retelling, which it is not. It is instead a new fairy tale for the modern age. VERDICT An interesting twist on commonly used tropes that doesnt quite achieve cohesion. A good choice for younger tweens or teens looking for dystopian fiction.-Tegan Anclade, Lake Villa District Library, IL About the Author M.P. Kozlowsky is the author of two middle-grade novels, Juniper Berry and The Dyerville Tales. Frost is his first novel for Young Adults. He lives in Westchester, New York, with his wife and two daughters. Excerpt. © Reprinted by permission. All rights reserved. The sounds grew louder. Frost closed her eyes. She wasnt ready. The footsteps ceased. With a creak, the door slowly opened. And there, standing before her, was a robot.Dad?No.Frost exhaled, a mixture of disappointment and relief. Bunt. You were gone so long, you had me worried. It is becoming more and more difficult to find supplies, Frost. And there are more and more dangers to evade. Bunt bent down and lowered his box of loot to the ground, then, on one knee, he placed a hand on Romes. The broot did not stir beneath the metallic touch. He is getting worse. Youre supposed to tell me hes getting better.I do not lie. You know that. Your broot is dying. He has a month of life left. Two at most.I was sick too, once. Dont you remember? I used to always be sick when I was little. Dad told me so. He said it was bad, very bad. Worse than Romes. And, look, I got better. The Broot will not.The brutal honesty was too much for Frost, and her eyes filled with tears. It was a day she had been dreading for years, and all she wanted to hear was that there was hope, just a glimmer of hope. I wish my Dad were here. He would never say...

Book : Seeing Red - Erskine, Kathryn

-Titulo Original : Seeing Red-Fabricante : Scholastic Press-Descripcion Original: National Book Award winner Kathryn Erskine delivers a powerful story of family, friendship, and race relations in the South. Life will never be the same for Red Porter. Hes a kid growing up around black car grease, white fence paint, and the backward attitudes of the folks who live in his hometown, Rocky Gap, Virginia. Reds daddy, his idol, has just died, leaving Red and Mama with some hard decisions and a whole lot of doubt. Should they sell the Porter family business, a gas station, repair shop, and convenience store rolled into one, where the slogan -- Porters: We Fix it Right! -- has been shouting the familys pride for as long as anyone can remember? With Daddy gone, everythings different. Through his friendship with Thomas, Beau, and Miss Georgia, Red starts to see theres a lot more than car motors and rusty fenders that need fixing in his world. When Red discovers the injustices that have been happening in Rocky Gap since before he was born, hes faced with unsettling questions about his familys legacy. From School Library Journal Gr 5-7-In 1972, Red Porter, 12, is dealing with the recent death of his father. His mother wants to move the family from Stony Gap, Virginia, to Ohio-which would mean that Red and his brother, J, would have to leave everyone and everything they know, including friends, the family convenience and car-repair shops, and their home that is full of memories of their father. Red is also dealing with an estrangement from his African American friend, Thomas, who severs ties with him after someone tries to burn a cross on his grandparents yard. Red tries many ways to stay in Virginia, from vandalism to getting rid of For Sale signs to skipping school to work in the shop and store. Hes desperate enough to seek help from his neighbor Darrells gang, but they wont aid him unless hes initiated into the group. They convince him to burn a cross and even try to get him to beat up Thomas, who they tie up and nearly lynch. Erskine tackles many issues in this novel: death and grieving, racism and race relations, womens rights, physical abuse, and religious and educational bias. By learning through his mistakes and the advice and actions of those around him, Red evolves from an angry, grieving boy to a well-adjusted, helpful big brother who can handle a shameful family legacy.-Adrienne L. Strock, Chicago Public Library?(c) Copyright 2013. Library Journals LLC, a wholly owned subsidiary of Media Source, Inc. No redistribution permitted. From Booklist *Starred Review* The year is 1972 and things are changing in tiny Stony Gap, Virginia. There’s a For Sale sign in front of 12-year-old Red Porter’s house; his daddy has died, and now his mama must sell both the house and their combination garage (“Porter’s: We Fix It Right”) and convenience store (“What-U-Want”). Worse, she then plans to move the family to Ohio. Red is determined to stop her, but what can one 12-year-old do? When he turns to a local gang for help, he unwittingly finds himself complicit in a case of racial bigotry that leaves his friend Thomas injured and Red riddled with guilt. Meanwhile, school has started, and he has a new teacher whose passion is history. “History’s boring and stupid,” Red protests-but it’s history that may offer him and his family a way to remain in Stony Gap. In the process of attempting to right a century-old wrong, Red learns the salutary lesson that he can make his own history. Erskine has written a powerful indictment of injustice in all forms and an equally powerful and dramatic demonstration that young people, by taking individual action, can actually change history. This is an important book that deserves the widest possible readership. Grades 5-8. --Michael Cart Review Praise for Seeing Red: * A powerful indictment of injustice of all forms and an equally powerful and dramatic demonstration that young people, by taking individual action, can...

Book : The Surprising Power Of A Good Dumpling - Chim, Wai

-Titulo Original : The Surprising Power Of A Good Dumpling-Fabricante : Scholastic Press-Descripcion Original: An authentic novel about growing up in an Asian immigrant family with a mother who is suffering from a debilitating mental illness. Anna Chiu has her hands full. When shes not looking after her brother and sister or helping out at her fathers restaurant, shes taking care of her mother, whose debilitating mental illness keeps her in bed most days. Her fathers new delivery boy, Rory, is a welcome distraction and even though she knows that things arent right at home, shes starting to feel like she could be a normal teen. But when her mother finally gets out of bed, things go from bad to worse. And as her mothers condition worsens, Anna and her family question everything they understand about themselves and each other. The Surprising Power of a Good Dumpling is a heart-wrenching, true-to-life exploration through the often neglected crevices of culture, mental illness, and family. Its strong themes are balanced by a beautiful romance making it a feel-good, yet important read. From School Library Journal Gr 9 Up-Life isnt easy for Anna Chiu. She has to take care of her younger brother and sister while her father is busy working at the familys Chinese restaurant, and her mother cant get out of bed. With all the responsibility, Anna feels like she cant be a typical teen, until she meets Rory. He is hired as a delivery boy for the restaurant, and the two bond on the long rides home. When Annas mom finally gets out of bed, things appear to look up, but actually go from bad to worse. Tackling family, relationships, culture, and mental health, this book is a fast-paced and fabulous read. The story takes place in Australia and features Anna and her Chinese Australian family. Rory and several other characters are white, and the other restaurant employees and some of Annas peers are of Asian descent. This book shines a light on mental illness and how it affects not only the person who lives with it, but also their loved ones. Some aspects of the novel are on the darker side, such as learning Annas mom used to hit her daughters with a feather duster, but they are handled gently. Some readers may be unfamiliar with the Australian and Cantonese terminology, but the lack of understanding wont take away from the story. VERDICT A good addition to any collection, but especially for those looking to diversify it.-Amanda Borgia, Uniondale P.L., NY?(c) Copyright 2011.
