Book : Landscape Painting Essential Concepts And Techniques.

-Titulo Original : Landscape Painting Essential Concepts And Techniques For Plein Air And Studio Practice-Fabricante : Watson-Guptill-Descripcion Original: Because nature is so expansive and complex, so varied in its range of light, landscape painters often have to look further and more deeply to find form and structure, value patterns, and an organized arrangement of shapes. In Landscape Painting, Mitchell Albala shares his concepts and practices for translating natures grandeur, complexity, and color dynamics into convincing representations of space and light. Concise, practical, and inspirational, Landscape Painting focuses on the greatest challenges for the landscape artist, such as: * Simplification and Massing: Learn to reduce natures complexity by looking beneath the surface of a subject to discover the forms basic masses and shapes.* Color and Light: Explore color theory as it specifically applies to the landscape, and learn the various strategies painters use to capture the illusion of natural light.* Selection and Composition: Learn to select wisely from natures vast panorama. Albala shows you the essential cues to look for and how to find the most promising subject from a world of possibilities. The lessons in Landscape Painting-based on observation rather than imitation and applicable to both plein air and studio practice-are accompanied by painting examples, demonstrations, photographs, and diagrams. Illustrations draw from the work of more than 40 contemporary artists and such masters of landscape painting as John Constable, Sanford Gifford, and Claude Monet. Based on Albalas 25 years of experience and the proven methods taught at his successful plein air workshops, this in-depth guide to all aspects of landscape painting is a must-have for anyone getting started in the genre, as well as more experienced practitioners who want to hone their skills or learn new perspectives. About the Author MITCHELL ALBALA teaches landscape painting at the Gage Academy of Art in Seattle. A respected and dedicated teaching artist for more than 20 years, he is best known for his atmospheric and semiabstract landscapes of the Pacific Northwest and Alaska. Book : Human Dimension & Interior Space A Source Book Of...

-Titulo Original : Human Dimension & Interior Space A Source Book Of Design Reference Standards-Fabricante : Watson-Guptill-Descripcion Original: The study of human body measurements on a comparative basis is known as anthropometrics. Its applicability to the design process is seen in the physical fit, or interface, between the human body and the various components of interior space. Human Dimension and Interior Space is the first major anthropometrically based reference book of design standards for use by all those involved with the physical planning and detailing of interiors, including interior designers, architects, furniture designers, builders, industrial designers, and students of design. The use of anthropometric data, although no substitute for good design or sound professional judgment should be viewed as one of the many tools required in the design process. This comprehensive overview of anthropometrics consists of three parts. The first part deals with the theory and application of anthropometrics and includes a special section dealing with physically disabled and elderly people. It provides the designer with the fundamentals of anthropometrics and a basic understanding of how interior design standards are established. The second part contains easy-to-read, illustrated anthropometric tables, which provide the most current data available on human body size, organized by age and percentile groupings. Also included is data relative to the range of joint motion and body sizes of children. The third part contains hundreds of dimensioned drawings, illustrating in plan and section the proper anthropometrically based relationship between user and space. The types of spaces range from residential and commercial to recreational and institutional, and all dimensions include metric conversions. In the Epilogue, the authors challenge the interior design profession, the building industry, and the furniture manufacturer to seriously explore the problem of adjustability in design. They expose the fallacy of designing to accommodate the so-called average man, who, in fact, does not exist. Using government data, including studies prepared by Dr. Howard Stoudt, Dr. Albert Damon, and Dr. Ross McFarland, formerly of the Harvard School of Public Health, and Jean Roberts of the U.S. Public Health Service, Panero and Zelnik have devised a system of interior design reference standards, easily understood through a series of charts and situation drawings. With Human Dimension and Interior Space, these standards are now accessible to all designers of interior environments. About the Author Julius Panero, AIA, ASID, is a practicing architect, interior designer, and an associate professor of interior design at the Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT) in New York. He has taught interior design for the last twenty years and was the former chairperson of the Interior Design department at FIT. Book : Collage Techniques A Guide For Artists And...

-Titulo Original : Collage Techniques A Guide For Artists And Illustrators-Fabricante : Watson-Guptill-Descripcion Original: One of many exhilarating artistic developments that took place during the early twentieth century, the fine art medium of collage emerged from the cubist gluing and pasting explorations of Georges Braque and Pablo Picasso. As a result of its experimental genesis, collage has continued to serve not only as a primary form of expression for many prominent artists, but as a principal means of evaluating and developing new creative strategies. Conceived and written by renowned artist, author, and teacher Gerald Brommer, Collage Techniques first presents the medium within the context of a wide variety of materials, including washi (oriental and rice papers) and watermedia; stained, prepared, and found papers; photographs; and fabrics and fibers. Each category of material is examined through a step-by-step demonstration and works by artists who approach collage in original and refreshing ways. The latest trends in technologically enhanced collage, including such high-tech applications as multiple photocopying and digital scanning, are also discussed. The author then explores how the elements and principles of design are used in collage, and how they in turn are employed in all the major genre, including still life, landscape, the human figure, abstraction, and nonobjective imagery. Beautifully illustrated with the work of more than eighty noted artists, including Edward Betts, Jae Carmichael, Margo Hoff, Katherine Chang Liu, and Fred Otnes, Collage Techniques is an essential reference for all artists and illustrators, regardless of their creative focus or choice of medium. Review Rather than a project-driven craft book, Collage Techniques is an exciting presentation of the medium as a fine art. From the famous practitioners (Matisse, Picasso, Hockney) to the many accomplished artists represented throughout the book, the images are stunning, sometimes startling. A thorough coverage of materials, supplies, and basic methods lays the groundwork of the first section; chapters then focus on various types of papers, fibers, photographs, and technologically enhanced imagery that can be incorporated. The second section explores design considerations for various subjects (still lifes, landscapes, human figures, social commentary, abstract imagery, three-dimensional works). There are no step-by-step objects here, but instead an amazing collection of work that utilizes collage by bringing together painting and sculpture and provides colorful, inventive, thought-provoking inspiration for experimenting with the medium. Since being selected for Entertainment Weekly’s “It List” in 1998, Crilley has developed a massive Internet following for his drawing demonstration videos, which have received well over two hundred million views on YouTube. His books have been featured in USA Today, the New York Daily News, and Disney Adventures magazine, as well as on CNN Headline News. Excerpt. © Reprinted by permission. All rights reserved. Introduction A few years ago, I uploaded a video to YouTube called “Realism Challenge: Crumpled Paper.” It opened on a small sheet of white paper on the left-hand side of the screen, which I picked up and lightly crumpled. The remaining two minutes of the video were devoted to me doing an illustration in time lapse-right there beside the crumpled paper-of that very same object. It was a simple enough idea. But something about it captured people’s attention. It got hundreds of thousands of views, prompting me to try a similar exercise, this time with a sliced mushroom in place of the crumpled paper. When that one proved equally popular, I tried a third-this time with a torn-up playing card. That one proved the most popular of them all; as of this writing, it has had more than six million views. I began to understand that these videos were supplying people with a visual experience they’d probably never had before. Was I doing something new in these videos? Well, yes and no. It is common enough to see a seemingly three-dimensional object that is, in fact, a painting. Indeed, examples of “trompe l’oeil” painting-images designed to fool the eye in this way-can be found as far back as Greek and Roman times. An artist creating a mural in ancient Pompeii may have playfully painted an open window where in fact none existed. Such exercises in hyperrealistic trickery have continued over the centuries right up to our own times. So no, there is nothing new about an artist painting something at actual size in an effort to make it seem real enough to reach out and touch. But seeing an artist go up against a real object-one that remained right there in full view as the artist worked-that was something relatively new. By leaving the object in view, I put myself to the ultimate test of capturing reality. I invited the viewers to compare the two-object and illustration-with their own eyes and say to what degree I had succeeded or failed. And yet I had the nagging...

Having worked as a painter and teacher for three decades, he is sought after for his national and international workshops, and his popular videos continue to be in demand. He lives in New York City. Excerpt. © Reprinted by permission. All rights reserved. INTRODUCTION Every oil painter knows the feeling: You’re standing in front of the easel studying your painting, and while nothing seems particularly wrong with it, there’s nothing particularly right about it either. The picture sits there, staring back at you, obviously in need of help, but sending no clear signal as to what kind of help. In my experience, when that happens, when unknown forces have dragged the picture down to the murky depths and are blocking all attempts at resuscitation, it’s time to hit the big issues, time to strip away superficiality and go after the essentials. But which essentials? As you will see in the following pages, there are many oil painting essentials that are important, but they can’t all be summoned up and thrown at the suffering painting. When you run up against a serious artistic impasse like the one described above what you need are- prime essentials! And luckily, after forty years of intensive research, I’ve figured out exactly what these prime essentials are: - Accuracy: Make sure you accurately depict the subject. - Design: Arrange the material in a dynamic pattern. - Depth: Make sure the near/far feeling of space is convincing. - Drama: Intensify the visual energy. Each of these prime essentials is important, and each needs to be given full attention by the oil painter. What often happens, though, is that one or more of them is neglected, and the picture doesn’t reach its full potential. For example, if you put all your energy into accuracy but neglect design, depth, and drama, the painting becomes just an inventory of what’s seen. Or if you emphasize design at the expense of depth, accuracy, and drama, you get a picture with a flat, decorative, cutout look. If the picture is to succeed, each prime essent...

INTRODUCTIONIt’s hard to say when I first began keeping a journal, but it was probably in high school. I remember spending nights avoiding my homework, writing and doodling in my diary. I never wanted to reveal too much for fear someone would read it, so I always held back a little bit and expressed serious thoughts and feelings through random doodles and drawings, only hinting at the big stuff with a few words. Drawing made me feel less vulnerable than writing out all of the details of my days, and creating those drawings helped me decompress. Handwriting as an art form is an expression of oneself, and I have a deep appreciation for how different writing utensils can alter my script. I have always loved the act of simply writing words-stringing them together in various shapes and sizes or using them to create abstract patterns. The words don’t actually need to say anything. Writing words or single letterforms in groupings-more like stream of consciousness thoughts-has always been a fluid and calming exercise for me. In college I had sketchbooks filled with random writings of patterned words alongside small drawings. I would photocopy these to use in collage work. The sketchbook I used for class notes and planning how I would solve design projects was the most precious thing in my schoolbag. My husband even proposed to me in one of my journals. When I became a mother, I filled journals with our boys’ first words and milestones. I keep travel journals on every trip we take, and I encourage my kids to always have a blank book in their bags as well. There is something about turning the pages of a book-this compact object that contains days, or months, worth of artwork and thoughts, transporting us to another place and time-that has always been so satisfying to me. As the years passed, I noticed that the drawings were disappearing from the pages of my journals. As my life got busier with work and family, I spent less and less time drawing. Months turned into years, and eventually I felt as if I could no longer draw. I had spent more than eighteen years working as a graphic designer, and one day I realized that I was desperate for a creative outlet free from computer screens and technology. When I had our boys, I was running a successful design bus...

Whenever I’m creating a new character, I always start with the eyes. You get all the emotion from the eyes; they are the gateway to the character’s soul. Eyes are the manga artist’s catchphrase or calling card. Next time you’re reading Naruto, Chobits, or even Vampire Knight-some of my personal favorites-take a look at the characters’ eyes and notice the differences in the style and execution. Each manga artist has a signature way of drawing eyes. My eyes are “circle eyes,” and that’s the style you’re about to learn. SO FRESH, SO NEWI can just imagine what people thought when the first color TV was introduced all those years ago, watching the formerly black and white world come to life with color. The Yellow Brick Road in The Wizard of Oz must have suddenly made a lot more sense to those who’d only seen it on black-and-white TVs prior! Maybe those viewers felt a little like I did when I got my first set of markers. I felt as though some wizard had just given me a whole rainbow with which to color magical worlds in whatever way I wanted. For a time, life was grand, right up until I learned about the so-called rules. Rules can sometimes be rigid and confining, and have a “delightful” habit of taking the wind out of your creative sails. The first real rule I was taught as a child was Color inside the lines. Along with being the first rule I learned, it was also the first one that I simply had to break. I was much more interested in watching colors appear on the paper as I scribbled willy-nilly. It was hypnotizing. My young, little brain was thinking way too fast for my tiny hands to keep up. Get the color on the paper was the only goal I had in mind. I was a creative kid and my coloring was in abstract overdrive. I would go wildly outside the lines, straight over the lines, and, occasionally, right off the page and entirely onto the table! New rule from Mom: Don’t color the table. (Some rules are just no fun at all.) Now that I’m mostly grown up I’ve finally created a coloring book, not only for kids but also for the inner child in everyone. Nothing in the world makes me feel more like a kid again than the smell of a pack of crayons and a big blank coloring book full of possibilities. In this collection, I hope to provide you with a really interesting and unique experience. I want whomever picks up this book and flips through its pages to feel an irresistible urge to fill in all its images with all sorts of vivid colors. You’ll be surprised by how my pieces have changed for this coloring book. I have repurposed some of my artwork, adding cool patterned backgrounds to fill the negative space-and to give you more elements to color. Ha! Ha! Feel free to be as creative as you want! Color as you will. Break the rules if it pleases you. (But you don’t have to be messy, if you don’t want to be either.) This is a rule-free book. Alternatively, you can use these pages to practice and to level up your coloring skills. Maybe your pencil sketches are great but you just haven’t fo...

WATERCOLORS-IN OR OUT?When we think of watercolor, many of us immediately picture sentimental landscapes and paintings of ruins and picturesque scenes. Although eighteenth- and nineteenth-century English artists established watercolor as a sophisticated painting medium, it often yields strangely negative reactions from contemporary artists. An entire generation quickly relegates it to a hobbyist’s medium. Yet watercolor is far more than an amateur’s medium, as it requires intense concentration and practice. Once it’s put on paper, mistakes are difficult to remedy, and only when it is applied with confidence does it have a truly successful effect. Watercolor involves a certain degree of uncertainty, but it also teaches us to see. Watercolor was the first technique to free the artist from the studio because it could easily be taken outdoors. It required no tubes, easels, canvases, or similar implements, only a box of paints and paper. Even today, watercolor is a tool that frees us from the studio, our laptops, and countless charging cables. Watercolor is, however, not just a technique; it is almost an attitude. Watercolor always does what it wants. In a way, it is willful and anarchical. Therefore, for me, the secret to using watercolor to create pic-tures lies in striking a balance between control and letting go. Pictures are often only “really good” when they surprise us-when they reveal what we sensed and felt, but could not have consciously expressed. If we sacrifice the right amount of control in the artistic process, watercolor’s inherent qualities begin to work to our advantage. This book has two goals: to teach you watercolor techniques and to tell you something about color. However, it does not aim to explain, for example, how you can paint a certain sky in four steps. I seriously doubt whether readers learn more from such instruction books than they do by actually painting that sky. What if the sky should suddenly cloud over? Instead, this book wishes to show you the basic principles of watercolor paints, so you can flexibly apply them to whatever you want to achieve. I imagine it’s a little like learning chords on a guit...
