Book : Strategy Maps Converting Intangible Assets Into...
-Titulo Original : Strategy Maps Converting Intangible Assets Into Tangible Outcomes-Fabricante : Harvard Business Review Press-Descripcion Original: More than a decade ago, Robert S. Kaplan and David P. Norton introduced the Balanced Scorecard, a revolutionary performance measurement system that allowed organizations to quantify intangible assets such as people, information, and customer relationships. Then, in The Strategy-Focused Organization, Kaplan and Norton showed how organizations achieved breakthrough performance with a management system that put the Balanced Scorecard into action. Now, using their ongoing research with hundreds of Balanced Scorecard adopters across the globe, the authors have created a powerful new tool--the strategy map--that enables companies to describe the links between intangible assets and value creation with a clarity and precision never before possible. Kaplan and Norton argue that the most critical aspect of strategy--implementing it in a way that ensures sustained value creation--depends on managing four key internal processes: operations, customer relationships, innovation, and regulatory and social processes. The authors show how companies can use strategy maps to link those processes to desired outcomes; evaluate, measure, and improve the processes most critical to success; and target investments in human, informational, and organizational capital. Providing a visual aha! for executives everywhere who cant figure out why their strategy isnt working, Strategy Maps is a blueprint any organization can follow to align processes, people, and information technology for superior performance. Book : Buy-in Saving Your Good Idea From Getting Shot Down -
-Titulo Original : Buy-in Saving Your Good Idea From Getting Shot Down-Fabricante : Harvard Business Review Press-Descripcion Original: Youve got a good idea. You know it could make a crucial difference for you, your organization, your community. You present it to the group, but get confounding questions, inane comments, and verbal bullets in return. Before you know whats happened, your idea is dead, shot down. Youre furious. Everyone has lost: Those who would have benefited from your proposal. You. Your company. Perhaps even the country. It doesnt have to be this way, maintain John Kotter and Lorne Whitehead. In Buy-In, they reveal how to win the support your idea needs to deliver valuable results. The key? Understand the generic attack strategies that naysayers and obfuscators deploy time and time again. Then engage these adversaries with tactics tailored to each strategy. By inviting in the lions to critique your idea--and being prepared for them--youll capture busy peoples attention, help them grasp your proposals value, and secure their commitment to implementing the solution. The book presents a fresh and amusing fictional narrative showing attack strategies in action. It then provides several specific counterstrategies for each basic category the authors have defined--including:- Death-by-delay: Your enemies push discussion of your idea so far into the future its forgotten.- Confusion: They present so much data that confidence in your proposal dies.- Fearmongering: Critics catalyze irrational anxieties about your idea.- Character assassination: They slam your reputation and credibility.Smart, practical, and filled with useful advice, Buy-In equips you to anticipate and combat attacks--so your good idea makes it through to make a positive change. About the Author John P. Kotter is the Konosuke Matsushita Professor of Leadership, Emeritus, at Harvard Business School and is widely considered the worlds foremost authority on leadership and change. Lorne A. Whitehead is Leader of Education Innovation at the University of British Columbia, where he has also been a professor and the NSERC/3M Chairholder in the Department of Physics and Astronomy. PrefaceMost people skip Prefaces (occasionally feeling guilty as they do so) because they are not particularly interested in an introduction to a book, its history, any research behind it, or the writers. If you are a skipper, just flip to page 13. And don’t feel guilty. We have all experienced the basic problem addressed here, and in a very personal way, because it is an old, common, human, and increasingly important problem. You need sufficient support for a good idea or the right decision will not be accepted and implemented well. You or your allies present the plan. You present it well. Then, along with thoughtful issues being raised, come the confounding questions, inane comments, and verbal bullets-either directly at you or, even worse, behind your back. It matters not that the idea clearly makes sense. It matters not that the idea is needed, insightful, innovative, and logical. It matters not even if the issues involved are extremely important to a business, an individual, or even a nation. The proposal is still shot down, accepted but without sufficient support to gain all of its true benefits, or slowly dies a sad death. You’ve been there, both on and off the job. It can be maddening. You can end up flustered, embarrassed, or furious. All those who would benefit from the idea lose. You lose. In an extreme case, a whole company or nation may lose. And, as we shall demonstrate in this book, it doesn’t have to be that way. The argument put forth here, summarized simply, is this:1. The competent creation and implementation of good ideas is a basic life skill, relevant to the 21 year old college graduate, the 55 year old corporate CEO, and virtually everyone else. This skill, or the lack of it, affects the economy, governments, families, and most certainly our own lives. This point may be obvious, but les... -

Book : The Solution Revolution How Business, Government, And
-Titulo Original : The Solution Revolution How Business, Government, And Social Enterprises Are Teaming Up To Solve Societys Toughest Problems-Fabricante : Harvard Business Review Press-Descripcion Original: Government Alone Can’t Solve Society’s Biggest ProblemsWorld hunger. Climate change. Crumbling infrastructure. It’s clear that in today’s era of fiscal constraints and political gridlock, we can no longer turn to government alone to tackle these and other towering social problems. What’s required is a new, more collaborative and productive economic system. The Solution Revolution brings hope-revealing just such a burgeoning new economy where players from across the spectrum of business, government, philanthropy, and social enterprise converge to solve big problems and create public value.By erasing public-private sector boundaries, the solution economy is unlocking trillions of dollars in social benefit and commercial value. Where tough societal problems persist, new problem solvers are crowdfunding, ridesharing, app-developing, or impact-investing to design innovative new solutions for seemingly intractable problems. Providing low-cost health care, fighting poverty, creating renewable energy, and preventing obesity are just a few of the tough challenges that also represent tremendous opportunities for those at the vanguard of this movement. They create markets for social good and trade solutions instead of dollars to fill the gap between what government can provide and what citizens need.So what drives the solution economy? Who are these new players and how are their roles changing? How can we grow the movement? And how can we participate?Deloitte’s William D. Eggers and Paul Macmillan answer these questions and more, and they introduce us to the people and organizations driving the revolution-from edgy social enterprises growing at a clip of 15 percent a year, to megafoundations, to Fortune 500 companies delivering social good on the path to profit. Recyclebank, RelayRides, and LivingGoods are just a few of the innovative organizations you’ll read about in this book.Government cannot handle alone the huge challenges facing our global society-and it shouldn’t. We need a different economic paradigm that can flexibly draw on resources, combine efforts, and create value, while improving the lives of citizens. The Solution Revolution shows the way. From Booklist Executives Eggers and Macmillan set out to explain the multitrillion dollar “solution economy,” which is arising as governments partner with the private sector (citizens, businesses, entrepreneurs, and foundations) to address society’s urgent and deep-seated problems locally and worldwide. This new approach replaces the historic government-dominated model for solving entrenched problems in fields including health care, poverty, education, housing, and recycling. The public-private partnerships are possible because of technology and access to funding, collaborating tools for citizens to work together on challenging issues, and corporate awareness that enables its leaders to devote resources to addressing society’s pressing problems. The authors cite many new players in the societal problem-solving arena during the last 10 years, including Acumen, Ashoka, Kiva, and Zipcar. The authors conclude that a brighter future is ours “if we are savvy enough to grasp it.” Loaded with important information for a wide range of library patrons. --Mary Whaley Review “…pulsating with fresh ideas about civic and business and philanthropic engagement…the breadth of examples is impressive and global.” - The Wall Street Journal“Eggers and Macmillan’s work succeeds…as a guide to new opportunities to profit from ‘socially impactful’ activities once thought unprofitable.” - Financial Times“Another good read, The Solution Revolution explores how business, government, philanthropy and social enterprise are converging to solve big problems and create public value...the innovations Eggers and Macmillan outline, and the possibilities they imagine, are fascinating and tantalizing.” - The Washington Post“The Solution Revolution is an excellent primer for any... -

-Titulo Original : Out-innovate How Global Entrepreneurs--from Delhi To Detroit--are Rewriting The Rules Of Silicon Valley-Fabricante : Harvard Business Review Press-Descripcion Original: About the Author Alex Lazarow has worked at the intersection of investing, innovation, and economic development across the public, private, and social sectors for more than a decade. He is a venture capitalist with Cathay Innovation and was previously with Omidyar Network. He is a Kauffman Fellow, Council on Foreign Relations term member, and an adjunct professor specializing in social-impact investment and entrepreneurship at the Middlebury Institute of International Studies at Monterey. He is a graduate of Harvard Business School and the University of Manitoba. You can find Alexandre Lazarow at twitter /alex_lazarow or at alexlazarow . The new playbook for innovation and startup success is emerging from beyond Silicon Valley--at the frontier.Startups have changed the world. In the United States, many startups, such as Tesla, Apple, and Amazon, have become household names. The economic value of startups has doubled since 1992 and is projected to double again in the next fifteen years. For decades, the hot center of this phenomenon has been Silicon Valley. This is changing fast. Thanks to technology, startups are now taking root everywhere, from Delhi to Detroit to Nairobi to Sao Paulo. Yet despite this globalization of startup activity, our knowledge of how to build successful startups is still drawn primarily from Silicon Valley. As venture capitalist Alexandre Lazarow shows in this insightful and instructive book, this Silicon Valley gospel is due for a refresh--and it comes from what he calls the frontier, the growing constellation of startup ecosystems, outside of the Valley and other major economic centers, that now stretches across the globe. The frontier is a truly different world where startups often must cope with political or economic instability and lack of infrastructure, and where there might be little or no access to angel investors, venture capitalists, or experienced employee pools.Under such conditions, entrepreneurs must be creators who build industries rather than disruptors who change them because there are few existing businesses to disrupt. The companies they create must be global from birth because local markets are too small. They focus on resiliency and sustainability rather than unicorn-style growth at any cost. With rich and wide-ranging stories of frontier innovators from around the world, Out-Innovate is the new playbook for innovation--wherever it has the potential to happen. Review Alex Lazarow has provided us with an up-to-date map of the fast-moving world of innovation: how it works now and where it is headed. -Titulo Original : Global Dexterity How To Adapt Your Behavior Across Cultures Without Losing Yourself In The Process-Fabricante : Harvard Business Review Press-Descripcion Original: “I wrote this book because I believe that there is a serious gap in what has been written and communicated about cross-cultural management and what people actually struggle with on the ground.”-From the IntroductionWhat does it mean to be a global worker and a true “citizen of the world” today? It goes beyond merely acknowledging cultural differences. In reality, it means you are able to adapt your behavior to conform to new cultural contexts without losing your authentic self in the process. Not only is this difficult, it’s a frightening prospect for most people and something completely outside their comfort zone. But managing and communicating with people from other cultures is an essential skill today. Most of us collaborate with teams across borders and cultures on a regular basis, whether we spend our time in the office or out on the road. What’s needed now is a critical new skill, something author Andy Molinsky calls global dexterity. In this book Molinsky offers the tools needed to simultaneously adapt behavior to new cultural contexts while staying authentic and grounded in your own natural style. Practical, engaging, and refreshing, Global Dexterity will help you reach across cultures-and succeed in today’s global business environment. Review Global Dexterity by Andy Molinsky is the best book I’ve come across for providing practical, research-based suggestions for adapting (and not adapting) behavior. - David Livermore, PhD as seen on Cultural Intelligence Center“A resolutely practical approach, supported by numerous examples that make this book lively, useful and interesting to read.” - Manageris“Its a book I recommend highly, particularly to people who are put in non-U.S. cultural situations but have not yet put much thought into the implications.” - Federal Computer Week“Global Dexterity is an easy read and one that is accessible to people from all cultural backgrounds…” - International Higher Education Consulting“…an important book with wide application to the field of international education.” - NAFSA’s International Educator“When it comes to cultural competence, there are some big gaps between knowing about, knowing how to, and actually developing and applying the skills to manage self in real situations. Andy Molinsky has provided us with a methodology for bridging into the third and most critical of these steps, and his choice of the word dexterity in the title of the book is well chosen... The book is well written and an easy read.” - George Simons-SIETAR France (Society of Intercultural Education Training and Research)“This book is a quick and easy-to-understand resource for anyone who might find himself in a remotely foreign culture. It might simply save you some unneeded embarrassment, or it might go as far as saving your job.” - 800 CEO READ“Molinsky presents a succinct method for figuring out how to adapt to new cultural events, such as delivering feedback to Japanese colleagues, interviewing for a job in an overseas country, or participating more successfully in a meeting with foreign executives.” - Global Business and Organizational Excellence“a very readable and enjoyable primer with helpful tips for cross cultural behavior.” - The International Admissions Officer Bookshelf - Summer 2013, Intead (International Education Advantage)“This is a one-of-a-kind book on developing cross-cultural insight. Like most subjects, you cannot learn it in one reading. Practice is essential. B... -

Book : White Working Class, With A New Foreword By Mark...
-Titulo Original : White Working Class, With A New Foreword By Mark Cuban And A New Preface By The Author Overcoming Class Cluelessness In America-Fabricante : Harvard Business Review Press-Descripcion Original: It is really worth a read… -- Former Vice President Joe Biden, interviewed on Pod Save AmericaNow in paperback with a new Foreword by Mark Cuban and a new Preface by the author, White Working Class explains why so much of the elites analysis of the white working class is misguided, rooted in class cluelessness.Joan C. Williams, described as having something approaching rock star status by the New York Times, explains that many people have conflated working class with poor--but the working class is, in fact, the elusive, purportedly disappearing middle class. They often resent the poor and the professionals alike. But they dont resent the truly rich, nor are they particularly bothered by income inequality. Their dream is not to join the upper middle class, with its different culture, but to stay true to their own values in their own communities--just with more money. While white working-class motivations are often dismissed as racist or xenophobic, Williams shows that they have their own class consciousness.White Working Class is a blunt, bracing narrative that sketches a nuanced portrait of millions of people who have proven to be a potent political force. For anyone stunned by the rise of populist, nationalist movements, wondering why so many would seemingly vote against their own economic interests, or simply feeling like a stranger in their own country, White Working Class will be a convincing primer on how to connect with a crucial set of workers--and voters. About the Author Joan C. Williams is Distinguished Professor of Law and Hastings Foundation Chair at the University of California, Hastings College of the Law. Williams’s work includes What Works for Women at Work, coauthored with Rachel Dempsey (New York University Press, 2014); Unbending Gender: Why Family and Work Conflict and What To Do About It (Oxford University Press, 2000); and such widely read reports as “The Three Faces of Work-Family Conflict,” coauthored with Heather Boushey. Williams is frequently featured as an expert on social class. For more information, visit JoanCWilliams ...

Book : Hard Facts, Dangerous Half-truths And Total Nonsense.
-Titulo Original : Hard Facts, Dangerous Half-truths And Total Nonsense Profiting From Evidence-based Management-Fabricante : Harvard Business Review Press-Descripcion Original: About the Author Jeffrey Pfeffer is Professor of Organizational Behavior at Stanford’s Graduate School of Business. Robert I. Sutton is Professor of Management Science and Engineering at Stanford. They coauthored The Knowing-Doing Gap (HBS Press, 2000). The best organizations have the best talent. . . Financial incentives drive company performance. . . Firms must change or die. Popular axioms like these drive business decisions every day. Yet too much common management “wisdom” isn’t wise at all-but, instead, flawed knowledge based on “best practices” that are actually poor, incomplete, or outright obsolete. Worse, legions of managers use this dubious knowledge to make decisions that are hazardous to organizational health.Jeffrey Pfeffer and Robert I. Sutton show how companies can bolster performance and trump the competition through evidence-based management, an approach to decision-making and action that is driven by hard facts rather than half-truths or hype. This book guides managers in using this approach to dismantle six widely held-but ultimately flawed-management beliefs in core areas including leadership, strategy, change, talent, financial incentives, and work-life balance. The authors show managers how to find and apply the best practices for their companies, rather than blindly copy what seems to have worked elsewhere. This practical and candid book challenges leaders to commit to evidence-based management as a way of organizational life-and shows how to finally turn this common sense into common practice. -Titulo Original : Reverse Innovation Create Far From Home, Win Everywhere-Fabricante : Harvard Business Review Press-Descripcion Original: A New York Times, Wall Street Journal, USA Today, Amazon BestsellerReverse Innovation is the new business idea everyone is talking about. Why? Because it presents the blueprint for scaling growth in emerging markets, and importing low-cost and high impact innovations to mature ones.Innovation is no longer the exclusive domain of the Silicon Valley elite. Reverse Innovation will open your eyes to the fact that the dynamics of global innovation are changing-and if you want your firm to survive, you’d better pay attention. The gap between rich nations and emerging economies is closing. No longer will innovations travel the globe in only one direction, from developed to developing nations. They will also flow in reverse. CEOs of the world’s most influential companies agree and have cited Reverse Innovation as their playbook for the next generation of global growth. Authors Vijay Govindarajan and Chris Trimble of the Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth explain where, when, and why reverse innovation is on the rise and why the implications are so profound. Learn how to make innovation in emerging markets happen and how such innovations can unlock even greater opportunity throughout the world. You’ll follow some of the world’s leading companies (including GE, Deere & Company, P&G, and PepsiCo) through stories that illustrate exactly what works and what doesn’t.If you’re in a Western economy, you need to accept that the future lies far from home. But the idea is not just for Western audiences. If innovation is at the heart of your company or your career, no matter where you practice business, Reverse Innovation is a phenomenon you need to understand. This book will help you do that. Reverse Innovation shows senior managers how to make innovation in emerging markets happen, and how these innovations can unlock business opportunities on a global scale - using real-life case studies to illustrate the theories.” - Business Executive“The book presents its ideas clearly, with about half devoted to the general concepts and the other half to case examples of companies such as GE, Procter & Gamble and PepsiCo, which are leading the way in reverse innovation.
