    -Titulo Original : Audio CD - JAZZ LIFE - Malachi Thompson-Fabricante : Delmark-Descripcion Original: Trumpeter Malachi Thompson, who emerged from the AACM scene in Chicago to play with Sam Rivers, Jackie McLean, and Archie Shepp in New York, is one of those gifted jazz artists who never seem to get the breaks and recognition they deserve. Thompson lived in D.C. for several years before a bout with cancer sent him home to Chicago in 1989. He wrestled the disease into remission and gathered together some of his favorite musicians, including Washington saxophonist Carter Jefferson and Chicago pianist Kirk Brown, to record a new album, The Jaz Life. The recording demonstrates that Thompson hasnt lost his knack for composing and arranging. He wrote tributes to John Coltrane and Miles Davis that dont ape their sound so much as express Thompsons passionate response to their music. He pays tribute to his days in Lester Bowies Brass Fantasy by arranging a freewheeling jazz treatment of Ray Charless R&B standard, Drown in My Own Tears. Thompsons arrangement lends new harmonic scope to the Rodgers & Hart chestnut, My Romance. Unfortunately, his illness has apparently undermined Thompsons once robust tone on the trumpet as well as his sure sense of pitch. A much better example of the trumpeter in his prime is his brilliant previous album, Spirit, which was recorded in the mid-80s and released in 1990. --Geoffrey Himes Trumpeter Malachi Thompson used the unconventional spelling, Jaz, to distinguish real jazz from smooth jazz. This 1991 recording was one of Thompsons most exciting CDs and features Carter Jefferson, tenor sax; Joe Ford, alto and soprano sax; Kirk Brown, piano; Harrison Bankhead, bass; Nasar Abadey, drums; Richad Lawrence, congas. Perhaps the excitement was a result of Malachis at the time recent victory over a rare lymphoma cancer? (Previously deleted:7/1/07. Original release date:6/16/92) The Jaz Life forwards a thoughtful, yet passionate take on the stylistic confluence that makes the 60s such a rich chapter in jazzs trumpet legacy. Here & Now are an English psychedelic/space rock band formed in early 1974. They have close connections with the band Gong and in 1977/1978 worked with Gongs Daevid Allen and Gilli Smyth under the name Planet Gong. In this combination released a live album Floating Anarchy 1977 and a single Opium for the People. Floating Anarchy 1977 is reputed to have sold around 250,000 copies, more than any other Gong record. Although credited to Zero (A pseudonym of Daevid Allen) the bulk of the material on the album was selected from Here & Nows original repertoire they had built up from jamming at festivals. In 1978 Here & Now also forged a strong relationship with punk pundit Mark P.s group Alternative TV, touring together. This joint live album What You See Is What You Are was originally issued in 1978 and has never seen the light of day on CD until now. This is a real slice of underground history. As the repetitive process continues, those sounds common to the original spoken statement and those implied by the structural dimensions of the room are reinforced. The others are gradually eliminated. The space acts as a filter; the speech is transformed into pure sound. All the recorded segments are spliced together in the order in which they were made and constitute the work. I Am Sitting in a Room was composed in 1970 and was first performed at the Guggenheim Museum in New York City that same year. A second version was made in 1972 to accompany the dance, Dune, performed by the Viola Farber Dance Company at the Brooklyn Academy of Music. Since that time, numerous versions of this composition have been realized in various ways by other musicians, including a Swedish radio broadcast version. This recording was made by Alvin Lucier on October 29th and 31st, 1980, in the living room of his home in Middletown, CT. The material was recorded on a Nagra tape recorder with an Electro-Voice 635 dynamic microphone and played back on one channel of a Revox A77 tape recorder, Dynaco amplifier and a KLH Model Six loudspeaker.
