Hialed by the New York Times, Jazz Times, Village voice as aggressive, having a smart sense of pyrotechnics and briskly explosive. Review Drummer Guillermo E. Brown burst onto the progressive jazz circuit via his performances and recordings with forward-thinking saxophonists David S. Ware and Rob Reddy amid various projects and sessions. His first solo release finds the artist carrying the torch for Thirsty Ears somewhat futuristic Blue Series. Brown, with assistance from multi-reedmen Daniel Carter and Andre Vidal, among others, delivers a decisively high-tech outing, awash with funk, trip-hop, and more. The drummer lays down a series of complex electro-acoustic beats in concert with the ambient electronic soundscapes and the woodwind performers often willowy lines. Brown also receives assistance from vocalist Latasha Natasha Diggs, who provides some downright enigmatic vocalese on four pieces. A few of these works might be reminiscent of what Herbie Hancocks Headhunters were doing back in the 70s. Yet, advances in digital instrumentation and effects processing clearly distinguish this outing from anything that may have been produced back in the 70s or 80s. Brown seems to be having some good-natured fun throughout this nicely produced effort, which is a culmination of cleverly orchestrated sounds and mini-themes. He also melds some odd-metered shuffle and swing vibes into his groove-oriented attack. It might seem like there is a bit too much going on at once in some instances or passages; however, Browns clear-sighted direction and conspicuously novel approach reap considerable dividends --All Music Guide Soul at the Hands of the Machine is Thirsty Ears latest addition to the Blue Series, a group of records whose stated purpose is to push the boundaries of jazz. A couple of entries have shoved harder than the rest-- Matt Shipps Nu Bop and Spring Heel Jacks Masses have mated hip hop and prerecorded electronic experiments, respectively, with harmonically complex improvisation. Others, like Mat Maneris Blue Decco and William Parkers Painters Spring, are simply really good jazz records. All of them, however, have started with unobtrusively recorded jazz played on acoustic instruments. So, maybe Guillermo E. Browns Soul, which almost completely dispenses with the conventional jazz lineup and heads straight for outer space, is the Blue Series most radical release yet, at least compared to what we might expect from Thirsty Ear. This record will come as a surprise to those who know Brown from his drumming with Shipp and David S. Ware, neither of whom have tried anything nearly this eclectic-- Soul runs the gamut from out-jazz wails to electro thumps to ambient synth washes to soul-diva testimonies to Afro-Cuban rhythms. Of course, the mere presence of a mishmash of styles doesnt make a record good. Plenty of genre-hopping releases-- most of the catalog of the Six Degrees label and a lot of late-70s fusion, for example-- are terrible because eclecticism is the end rather than a means. Theres nothing particularly novel about throwing a sample of Tuvan throat singers over a drum and bass beat, particularly if the thrower doesnt understand Tuvan throat singing or drum and bass. Brown succeeds where others fail, though, for two reasons. The first is that he and the musicians he employs seem to understand the styles theyre incorporating-- the beats are complex and dont sound dated, the ambient textures are well-recorded, and the improvisation doesnt suffer any from all the extra layers of sound.
