Like My Bloody Valentine after three double espressos, opener Add It On zooms heavenward within seconds, epitomizing band leader Alicia Bognannos newfound clarity of purpose, while the bass-driven melodies and propulsive beats of Where to Start and Let You are the musical equivalents of the sun piercing through a perpetually cloudy sky. A very old saying goes that no one saves us but ourselves. Recognizing and breaking free from the patterns impeding our forward progress can be transformative. Indeed, the third Bully album, SUGAREGG, may not ever have come to fruition had Bognanno not navigated every kind of upheaval imaginable and completely overhauled her working process along the way. The artist admits that finding the proper treatment for bipolar 2 disorder radically altered her mindset, freeing her from a cycle of paranoia and insecurity about her work. Being able to finally navigate that opened the door for me to write about it, she says, pointing to the sweet, swirly Like Fire and slower, more contemplative songs such as Prism and Come Down as having been born of this new headspace. Even small changes like listening to music instead of the news first thing in the morning made me want to write and bring that pleasure to other people. An unexpected foray into the film world also helped set the table for SUGAREGG when Bognanno was asked to write songs for the 2019 movie Her Smell, starring Elisabeth Moss as the frontwoman of the fictional rock band Something She. The experience was cathartic, infusing Bognanno with new energy for songwriting, and she dove into making the new album. Having engineered both previous Bully albums herself, Bognanno freed herself to focus on the songs by handing production and engineering duties to Grammy-winning producer John Congleton (St. Vincent, Sleater-Kinney, The War on Drugs, Modest Mouse), and who worked with her on SUGAREGG at Pachyderm Studios in Cannon Falls in Bognannos home state of Minnesota. (Nirvanas In Utero, PJ Harveys Rid of Me and Superchunks Foolish were recorded at Pachyderm.) With contributions from longtime touring drummer Wesley Mitchell and bassist Zach Dawes (Sharon Van Etten and Lana Del Rey), and two additional songs recorded at Palace Studios in Toronto with Graham Walsh (Alvvays, METZ, !!!), SUGAREGG was finally complete. Ultimately, SUGAREGG is a testament that profound change can yield profound results - in this case, the most expressive and powerful music of Bognannos career. This is me longing to see the bigger picture, motivated and eager for contentment in the best way, she says. Hailed by fans as the second coming of Ministry (Al Jourgensen is definitely one of their creative inspirations), KTP have been leaving their bloody mark with outrageous stage performances and a sonic assault from a massive lineup packing three guitars, bass and drums, dueling vocalists Sean - The Ugly -American Smith and Jason - Twig the Exfoliator - VonWussow, and a barrage of programmed rhythms and samples. Their live shows are quickly becoming legendary, with constantly revolving themes that include zombie beach parties, blood-splattered slaughterhouses, Zodiac Killer masks, police and airline uniforms... even a Gilligans Island theme! In other words, you never know what youre gonna get. The bands first full-length album Dialogues with the Dead dropped this week, and its just as wildly unpredictable as their image. While the influence of Ministry is apparent throughout the record, KTP has incorporated a much wider spectrum of extreme-music elements into their sound, drawing equally from hardcore punk, shock rock and KMFDM-style heavy beat, and they summon much of the same chaotic, anything-goes vibe that made Martin Atkins experimental supergroup Pigface so shockingly memorable. Sonically, we have an industrial backbone, Twig recently told the Sacramento Bee. There are strong punk and hardcore roots, and the music can jump from thrash to dance anthems in mere seconds. No two songs sound the same as a result. Its out of hand. The same can be said for the bands live performances, which often spill over into the audience for an unpredictable interactive experience. We accept all consequences, destroy all standards, and set no boundaries, he concluded. Music can be dangerous and unpredictable. Everybody listening should play a part. Hes right, and the band backs that up: Dialogues is a schizoid genre explosion that never sticks with a single musical style for more than one track... and sometimes they dont even wait that long. Even with the samples and Frankensteinian electronic stimulation, tracks like the infectious Free Reign (Everybodys Dead) and Some People are vintage fist-pumping hardcore punk anthems at heart, plus we get punk/metal crossovers in Questions for Weapons and the call-and-response energy of Let Go, with some surprising injections of soaring melody in Goodbye Lullaby, on which you can really get a sense of the bands size and scope. Of course, the relentless death-machine riffs and power-tool beats of Ghost Stories, Copout and End All are intensely faithful odes to Ministry, as you can hear for yourself. Other industrial-strength material includes the dance-metal of Headcase and Oh Your God, the latter sounding for all the world like a Ministry/GWAR collaboration. Another standout is Freakonomics, which snaps violently between blistering hardcore, anthemic rap-rock and a beefy, drop-tuned Pantera groove. Theres even a dark ambient instrumental interlude, Unhappy with This World, which forms a brief but seriously chilling coda. If youre ready for a band that slams together just about every extreme style in the book for maximum impact and a huge, stacked sound but still manages to latch onto a few really amazing shout-along hooks then you might be ready for the maniacal onslaught that is Kill the Precedent.
