The band wrote, recorded, mixed and mastered their debut Mechanic Tyrants demo entirely in their basement. (One that was without a toilet, too.) They did it without a producer and engineer, relying solely on their young ears to ensure the best possible product. Released in June 2019, the reaction from the blossoming Metropolregion Nurnberg metal scene (which includes the cities of Nuremberg, Furth and Erlangen) was swift: The first pressing of Mechanic Tyrants sold out immediately, prompting Gates of Hell Records to jump in to re-release it for the rest of the world. Originally formed in November 2018 as a side-project with the goal of covering old-school metal songs while peppering in a few of their own compositions, the origins of Torpedo lay with guitarist Alex Starbreaker, who first formed a band using the Torpedo name several years ago. That particular band didnt quite pan out, so when the collective of Flo Fait (vocals/guitars), Danny Keck (bass) and Phil Sreý (drums) met up, it was a no-brainer to brand themselves as Torpedo. Conceptually, the Mechanic Tyrants title is inspired by The Terminator movies starring Arnold Schwarzenegger, where the theme of man versus machine perfectly suits the bands razor-sharp cross of vintage speed metal and NWOBHM, with a very strong Raven and Tank influence. Looking to strike while the creative irons were hot, the members of Torpedo improvised the music and wrote the lyrics to several of Mechanic Tyrants songs while they were recording, only adding to its raw and natural feel. Ned Rothenberg is an American multi-instrumentalist who was born in 1956 in Massachusetts. He has been internationally acclaimed for both his solo and ensemble music, presented for the past 33 years on 5 continents. He performs primarily on alto saxophone, clarinet, bass clarinet, and the shakuhachi - an endblown Japanese bamboo flute. His solo work utilizes an expanded palette of sonic language, creating a kind of personal idiom all its own. die13 was born as Dieter Kovai in 1973. He is a turntablist, hacker, filmmaker, autodidact, composer, collageur and conscientious copyright objector. Since the late 1980s he has explored the possibilities of vinyls, cassettes, harddisks, ip-protocols etc. as material for collages and compositions. Using various playing techniques and his own lathe cutter, he has pushed the development of turntables as instruments aside classical dj techniques and developed his very unique style. Kreator, Sodom, Living Death - and even one-hit wonders such as Violent Force (Velbert) - all came from working-class towns graced by bleak industrial buildings and mass unemployment. The same goes for Darkness. They formed on the spot on December 1st 1984 after a legendary gig at the Zeche Carl in Essen, where Destruction, Iron Angel and Tormentor (an early incarnation of Kreator) had been playing. Darkness first album Death Squad (originally released in 1987 on Tales of Thrash, a subsidiary label of GAMA) became an instant Teutonic Thrash classic. We had already demoed Iron Force, Death Squad and Phantasmagoria, explains vocalist/drummer Lacky. And there was also Armageddon but we had given this one to New Renaissance Records. The rest of the songs on Death Squad was all brand new material. I always thought Death Squad was the best we could deliver at this point in time. We had a bit of time pressure and no real experience in the studio. Bearing all this in mind, Death Squad was quite an achievement for us. In 1987, Noise Records, Steamhammer and Roadrunner were probably the most important labels for German Thrash Metal bands. However, Darkness signed with GAMA. Lacky explains: GAMA had their own little studio, international distribution, we were promised free copies of the album. This all sounded quite attractive at the time. We discovered much later that not everything was as nice as it sounded. The record sold in reasonable quantities (there was talk of 25,000 copies having changed hands) but Darkness did not make it into the Top 3 of German Thrash Metal (Kreator - Sodom - Destruction). By the time he was 19, he was backing many famous blues players in the area, including legend Freddie King. In 1976, Kubek was about to head out on tour with King when King died suddenly of a heart attack.Kubek next worked with R&B singer Al TNT Braggs and made a host of new friends, including Albert King, Stevie Ray Vaughan (with whom Kubek became close), B.B. King and many other icons. He often found himself jamming with these larger-than-life blues stars, while playing constantly around the Dallas area. He not only learned tips and techniques, but also soaked up stories and the lessons of being a professional touring musician. One night, he even had the chance to play B.B.s guitar, Lucille.In 1989, Kubek met guitarist/vocalist Bnois King at a Monday night Dallas jam session. The two became fast friends, and melded their seemingly divergent styles - Kubek a rocking and fierce picker and slider, King a subtle, fat-chord rhythm player whose solos are spontaneous and unpredictable - into one of the most potent guitar combinations the Southwest had ever produced. Kubek explains the relationship succinctly, Bnois fires me up. We are constantly pushing each other higher, complimenting each others solos. But its not planned. We never know what were going to do until its done. I pull the blues out of him, and he pulls the jazz out of me.Bnois King was born in Delhi, LA in 1943. He was inspired to play guitar by his high school music teacher. Before long, Bnois was playing blues cover songs with a local band. He traveled through Texas, Oklahoma and Colorado, finding local bands to gig with and also performing with carnival tent show groups. King made his way to Dallas in 1979, gigging with jazz combos until he hooked up with Kubek ten years later.
