Edited together from 185 separately-recorded vocal parts from singers around the world, each performer individually guided by Whitacres own conductors video, the piece has erupted into a YouTube phenomenon which has already notched up well over a million hits. Choirs and audiences had already felt the emotional force of Whitacres music, but this magical and somehow slightly miraculous incarnation of Lux Aurumque suggested that its potential could be limitless. The liberating power of communal singing has driven hit TV shows like Glee or, in the UK, The Choir, but Whitacre took the idea several steps further. He managed to make the entire planet his constituency, bringing together singers from all countries, classes and walks of life to create choral music of awesome emotional power and technical accomplishment. He really did teach the world to sing. The composer is proud of his achievement of course, but adds that even more than pride, I think Im just flabbergasted by it. Truly, the whole project began as just a whim. Never in my wildest dreams did I think it would start getting passed around and go viral, so its really astonishing to me. In Latin, Lux Aurumque means Light and Gold, which happens to be the title of Whitacres new debut album for Decca. Its a mixture of works from the Whitacre catalogue alongside three World Premiere recordings of new pieces, all of them freshly recorded for the occasion. Its the perfect gateway through which new listeners can experience the allure of Whitacres music for the first time, while giving existing fans pristine new recordings of some of his most successful pieces, tailored by the composer himself. This album is the first time that Ive ever conducted on record my interpretations of my own pieces, Whitacre explains. The new pieces havent been recorded before. Previous recordings of the older works have always been nice, but theyve never been exactly what I was hoping they would be. Thats the most interesting part for me; its finally a chance to say it the way Id like to say it. The pieces on the disc are performed by the British chamber choir, Laudibus, alongside Whitacres newly-created vocal group, the Eric Whitacre Singers. That will be a permanent ensemble, he explains. Knowing I can hand-pick my own group and mould them from the start is pretty thrilling. For a one-stop dose of Eric Whitacres music, the album is hard to beat (there are some pieces that are new, and then of course we had to put a couple of hits on there, deadpans the composer). It includes new versions of his Five Hebrew Songs and Three Songs of Faith, as well as a newly-Whitacre-ised take of Sleep (the piece with which Whitacre first tried out the virtual choir concept on the net). Among the new works, Nox Aurumque (Night and Gold) was conceived as a companion piece to Lux Aurumque, while The Stolen Child is based on the Yeats poem of the same name. Whitacre composed the latter as a commission to mark the 40th anniversary of the Kings Singers and the 25th anniversary of the National Youth Chorus of Great Britain, and he needed to devise a composition which could accommodate both of them. I thought `jeez, what text can I possibly find that justifies having six men up there with all these young people? he recalls. Then I remembered The Stolen Child, and its perfect. Its about these woodland fairies who are calling these children away from the world of adults. I decided I would make the Kings Singers the Woodland fairies, and they loved that description! Then the big chorus became the young people, all of this seduced youth. The strange thing about it was I wrote it in this very high kind of romantic, Brahmsian style. He collaborated with Johnny Mercer, Ira Gershwin, Ogden Nash, Sammy Cahn, John Latouche, and Yip Harburg, and wrote celebrated scores for Broadway and Hollywood. What you may not know is that he was born Vladimir Dukelsky, admitted to the Kiev Conservatory at age 11, where he studied composition with Reinhold Gliere and met his older colleague and lifelong friend Sergei Prokofiev. His family escaped Russia during the revolution and arrived in America in 1921, and within a year had befriended a musician named Jacob Gershowitz (you know him as George Gershwin), who persuaded him to Americanize his name and write for musical theater.Duke gained fame and fortune as a songwriter, but continued to compose concert works and Russian poetry under his original name. His serious music, stylistically similar to that of his friend Prokofiev as well as Shostakovich, also contains flashes of the American style of Roy Harris, Peter Mennin, and their mid-twentieth century contemporaries, balanced with elements of the late Russian romantic style. And it is of such fine quality and compelling listenability that the neglect of these works is scandalous.Urlicht AudioVisual is pleased to announce the world premiere recording of Duke s Violin Concerto, along with Capriccio Mexicano and Hommage to Offenbach. Also featured are Duke s Violin Sonata (commissioned by Roman Totenberg) and the Etude for Violin and Bassoon.Diana Burgin, the daughter of Ruth Posselt (1911-2007), the distinguished violinist who performed the premier of Duke s Violin Concerto, shared the following of her mother s recollections about the work and its premiere:---Duke wrote [it] at the suggestion of Jascha Heifetz and completed the piano score in 1941. The full score was not finished until shortly before the premier performances, given in March 1943 at Symphony Hall in Boston by my mother, violinist Ruth Posselt with the Boston Symphony Orchestra and my father Richard Burgin at the podium. ... [In a rather bitter prior episode for Duke, Heifetz had declined to premiere the work as it wasn t completely to (his) liking ; more to the point, Heifetz probably just didn t want to pay the commission.] My mother received the manuscript of Duke s concerto in early 1942, and that summer, played it (with piano) two times through for Koussevitzky, Duke and others at the conductor s home in Tanglewood. David S. Ware was a master saxophonist of the highest order, and an unparalleled sonic alchemist of the modern jazz era. Following Davids untimely passing in October 2012, it was understood necessary to continue releasing singular works of great magnitude in order to further radiate his distinctly potent sound and vision. As he and his work were an integral inspiration toward the creation of AUM Fidelity, that mission continues strong with this essential DSW-ARC series.Theatre Garonne, 2008 presents a luminous concert from a transitional period in David S. Wares ever-creative life. His 17-year-longstanding Quartet with Matthew Shipp and William Parker, which had achieved a naturally ascendant and well-earned worldwide acclaim, performed their final concerts on a triumphal European tour in March 2007. Knowing that this end was coming, David had already begun writing new compositions and conceptualizing what would become his new quartet. The first iteration of this group, foundationally with guitarist Joe Morris, debuted at New Yorks Iridium jazz club in mid-July. The group was made whole with Wares stalwart musical companion William Parker back on bass and fellow master musician Warren Smith on drums. As had been Wares method with his Quartet, the group worked the new material live on stage together toward a studio recording thereof. That session took place in May 2008, and Shakti [AUM052] was the gorgeous result. The change from Shipps 88 keys to Morris cleanly articulated lines on 6 strings played a substantial role in the resulting sound. The density of much of Wares classic Quartet work gave way, allowing a more ready hearing to the nuance & focus on melody which is part of all his work.
