His meteoric rise in 1977 to the bass chair in Weather Report and his work with Joni Mitchell, established him as a major player on the jazz and rock scenes. Broadcast by NHK radio at Shinjyuku Koseinenkin, Tokyo on 22nd May 1983, this is a rare example of his eclectic Word of Mouth small group having fun with a variety of musical styles. Given his status Jaco could have filled his septet with A-listers, instead he assembled a cast of journeyman and pals from the old days, all of whom can most definitely play. Compared to the high precision fusion hed been making with Weather Report Jacos small band outings at this time were rough and ready affairs. Perhaps for Jaco that was partly the point. There is no doubt that at some level this music represents Jaco looking back and enjoying himself with friends. Mirroring his 1976 debut album the set lists for this tour included reggae, funk, latin percussion, soul and jazz all featured alongside Jacos crowd pleasing solo spots. A 2008 brilliant CD box with two DVD set of Zappa Plays Zappa which is the name of a concert tour and band led by Dweezil, the oldest son of the late composer and musician Frank Zappa. The band debuted in 2006 with shows in Europe, Canada and the US. The shows is a collection of Frank Zappas rock-oriented compositions from 1960s to 1980s. Apart from Dweezil on lead guitar, the band consisted of a mix of relatively unknown young musicians and older musicians who previously played with Frank. Among those, Napoleon Murphy Brock (sax, flute, vocals) was an integral part of the band, while drummer/singer Terry Bozzio and electric guitarist Steve Vai performed as guests. The nine LPs released all featured the pioneering conductor Paul Freeman. Sony Classical is proud to reissue the complete Black Composer Series in a single original album collection with each CD remastered from the original analogue tapes using 24 bit/192 kHz technology. The composers featured span several centuries and come from many different backgrounds. The earliest is the unique Chevalier de Saint-Georges (17451799), a composer, violinist and swordsman born in Guadeloupe who spent most of his life in France. A whole album of his music includes the Symphony op. 11/1, the String Quartet op. 1/1 and the Symphonie Concertante op. 13. Another complete album is dedicated to the Brazilian composer Jos Maurcio Nunes Garcia (17671830) and his extraordinary Requiem Mass for Queen Maria I. Jos Silvestre White (18351918), a Cuban virtuoso violinist-composer in the mould of Wieniawski, taught pupils including George Enescu, and his Violin Concerto is interpreted here by Aaron Rosand. The English composer Samuel Coleridge-Taylor (18751912) enjoyed considerable success in his lifetime, most of all through his cantata Hiawathas Wedding Feast, an aria from which is included here, as is his orchestral Danse ngre. Coleridge-Taylor visited the USA several times, and was an inspiration for the young William Grant Still (18951978). Stills Afro-American Symphony, the first by a black composer to be performed by a major orchestra, draws strongly on the musical language of the blues. His ballet score Sahdji and two arias from his opera Highway 1, U.S.A. are also included. Among the many other 20th-century composers featured are the Nigerian Fela Sowande (19051987), the Panamanian Roque Cordero (19172008), and the American Ulysses Simpson Kay (19171995).
