Book : The Definitive Guide To Dax Business Intelligence For

-Titulo Original : The Definitive Guide To Dax Business Intelligence For Microsoft Power Bi, Sql Server Analysis Services, And Excel Second Edition (business Skills)-Fabricante : Microsoft Press-Descripcion Original: Now expanded and updated with modern best practices, this is the most complete guide to Microsoft’s DAX language for business intelligence, data modeling, and analytics. Expert Microsoft BI consultants Marco Russo and Alberto Ferrari help you master everything from table functions through advanced code and model optimization. You’ll learn exactly what happens under the hood when you run a DAX expression, and use this knowledge to write fast, robust code. This edition focuses on examples you can build and run with the free Power BI Desktop, and helps you make the most of the powerful syntax of variables (VAR) in Power BI, Excel, or Analysis Services. Want to leverage all of DAX’s remarkable capabilities? This no-compromise “deep dive” is exactly what you need. Perform powerful data analysis with DAX for Power BI, SQL Server, and Excel - Master core DAX concepts, including calculated columns, measures, and calculation groups - Work efficiently with basic and advanced table functions - Understand evaluation contexts and the CALCULATE and CALCULATETABLE functions - Perform time-based calculations - Use calculation groups and calculation items - Use syntax of variables (VAR) to write more readable, maintainable code - Express diverse and unusual relationships with DAX, including many-to-many relationships and bidirectional filters - Master advanced optimization techniques, and improve performance in aggregations - Optimize data models to achieve better compression - Measure DAX query performance with DAX Studio and learn how to optimize your DAX From the Author When we (Marco Russo and Alberto Ferrari) decided it was time to update the first edition of The Definitive Guide to DAX, we thought it would be an easy job: after all, not many things have changed in the DAX language and the theoretical core of the book was still very good. We believed the focus would mainly be on updating the screenshots from Excel to Power BI, adding a few touch-ups here and there, and we would be done. How wrong we were! As soon as we started updating the first chapter, we quickly discovered that we wanted to rewrite pretty much everything. We felt so not only in the first chapter, but at every page of the book. Therefore, this is not really a 2nd edition; it is a brand-new book. The reason is not that the language or the tools have changed so drastically. The reason is that over these last few years we - as authors and teachers - have evolved a lot, hopefully for the better. We have taught DAX to thousands of users and developers all around the world, we have worked hard with our students, always striving for the best way to explain complex topics. Eventually, we did find different ways of describing the language we love. We increased the number of examples, showing practical uses of the functionalities after teaching the theoretical foundation of DAX. We tried to use a simpler style, without compromising on precision. We fought with the editor to increase the page count, as this was needed to cover all the topics we wanted to share. Nevertheless, we did not change the leitmotif of the book: we assume no previous knowledge of DAX on the readers part, even though this is not a book for the casual DAX developer. This is a book for people who really want to learn the language and gain a deep understanding of the power and complexity of DAX. Yes, if you want to leverage the real power of DAX, you need to be prepared for a long journey with us... Reading the book from cover to cover, and then reading it again, searching for the many details that - at first sight - are not obvious. About the Author Marco Russo and Alberto Ferrari are the founders of sqlbi , where they regularly publish articles about Microsoft Power BI, Power Pivot, DAX, and SQL Server Analysis Services. Book : Code The Hidden Language Of Computer Hardware And...

-Titulo Original : Code The Hidden Language Of Computer Hardware And Software-Fabricante : Microsoft Press-Descripcion Original: The classic guide to how computers work, updated with new chapters and interactive graphics For me, Code was a revelation. It was the first book about programming that spoke to me. It started with a story, and it built up, layer by layer, analogy by analogy, until I understood not just the Code, but the System. Code is a book that is as much about Systems Thinking and abstractions as it is about code and programming. Code teaches us how many unseen layers there are between the computer systems that we as users look at every day and the magical silicon rocks that we infused with lightning and taught to think. - Scott Hanselman, Partner Program Director, Microsoft, and host of Hanselminutes Computers are everywhere, most obviously in our laptops and smartphones, but also our cars, televisions, microwave ovens, alarm clocks, robot vacuum cleaners, and other smart appliances. Have you ever wondered what goes on inside these devices to make our lives easier but occasionally more infuriating? For more than 20 years, readers have delighted in Charles Petzolds illuminating story of the secret inner life of computers, and now he has revised it for this new age of computing. Cleverly illustrated and easy to understand, this is the book that cracks the mystery. Youll discover what flashlights, black cats, seesaws, and the ride of Paul Revere can teach you about computing, and how human ingenuity and our compulsion to communicate have shaped every electronic device we use. This new expanded edition explores more deeply the bit-by-bit and gate-by-gate construction of the heart of every smart device, the central processing unit that combines the simplest of basic operations to perform the most complex of feats. Petzold’s companion website, CodeHiddenLanguage , uses animated graphics of key circuits in the book to make computers even easier to comprehend. In addition to substantially revised and updated content, new chapters include: Chapter 18: Let’s Build a Clock! Chapter 21: The Arithmetic Logic Unit Chapter 22: Registers and Busses Chapter 23: CPU Control Signals Chapter 24: Jumps, Loops, and Calls Chapter 28: The World Brain From the simple ticking of clocks to the worldwide hum of the internet, Code reveals the essence of the digital revolution. About the Author Charles Petzold is also the author of The Annotated Turing: A Guided Tour through Alan Turing’s Historic Paper on Computability and the Turing Machine (Wiley, 2008). He wrote a bunch of other books too, but they’re mostly about programming applications for Microsoft Windows, and they’re all obsolete now. He lives in New York City with his wife, historian and novelist Deirdre Sinnott, and two cats named Honey and Heidi. His website is charlespetzold ...

Book : Rapid Development Taming Wild Software Schedules -...

-Titulo Original : Rapid Development Taming Wild Software Schedules-Fabricante : Microsoft Press-Descripcion Original: Corporate and commercial software-development teams all want solutions for one important problem how to get their high-pressure development schedules under control. In RAPID DEVELOPMENT, author Steve McConnell addresses that concern head-on with overall strategies, specific best practices, and valuable tips that help shrink and control development schedules and keep projects moving. Inside, you’ll find: A rapid-development strategy that can be applied to any project and the best practices to make that strategy work Candid discussions of great and not-so-great rapid-development practices estimation, prototyping, forced overtime, motivation, teamwork, rapid-development languages, risk management, and many others A list of classic mistakes to avoid for rapid-development projects, including creeping requirements, shortchanged quality, and silver-bullet syndrome Case studies that vividly illustrate what can go wrong, what can go right, and how to tell which direction your project is going RAPID DEVELOPMENT is the real-world guide to more efficient applications development. Review I can hear some of you exclaiming, How can you possibly recommend a book about software scheduling published by Microsoft Press and written by a consultant to Microsoft?! Well, put aside any preconceived biases. This is a tremendous book on effective scheduling software development, and it drinks deeply from the wisdom of all the classics in the field such as Brooks Mythical Man Month -- and is likely well-informed by McConnells experiences, good and bad, in Redmond. The nine page section entitled Classic Mistakes Enumerated is alone worth the price of admission and should be required reading for all developers, leads, and managers. Here are some types of the 36 classic mistakes that McConnell describes in detail: People Related Mistakes Heroics Adding people to a late project Politics placed over substance (etc.) Process Related Mistakes Abandonment of planning under pressure Planning to catch up later Code-like-hell programming (etc.) Technology Related Mistakes Silver-Bullet syndrome Overestimating savings from new tools or methods Switching tools in the middle of a project (etc.) I suspect that if youve ever been involved in software development, you winced after reading each of these nine points. And you will learn a great deal from the remaining 640 pages about concrete solutions. My only substantive gripe: cheesy Powerpoint graphics. Nonetheless, this book is Very Highly Recommended. About the Author Steve McConnell is recognised as one of the premier authors and voices in the development community. He is Chief Software Engineer of Construx Software and was the lead developer of Construx Estimate and of SPC Estimate Professional, winner of Software Development magazines Productivity Award. He is the author of several books, including Code Complete and Rapid Development, both honored with Software Development magazines Jolt Award...
