Book : Paperback Crush The Totally Radical History Of 80s...
-Titulo Original : Paperback Crush The Totally Radical History Of 80s And 90s Teen Fiction-Fabricante : Quirk Books-Descripcion Original: For fans of vintage YA, a humorous and in-depth history of beloved teen literature from the 1980s and 1990s, full of trivia and pop culture fun. Those pink covers. That flimsy paper. The nonstop series installments that hooked readers throughout their entire adolescence. These were not the serious-issue novels of the 1970s, nor the blockbuster YA trilogies that arrived in the 2000s. Nestled in between were the girl-centric teen books of the ’80s and ’90s-short, cheap, and utterly adored. In Paperback Crush, author Gabrielle Moss explores the history of this genre with affection and humor, highlighting the best-known series along with their many diverse knockoffs. From friendship clubs and school newspapers to pesky siblings and glamorous beauty queens, these stories feature girl protagonists in all their glory. Journey back to your younger days, a time of girl power nourished by sustained silent reading. Let Paperback Crush lead you on a visual tour of nostalgia-inducing book covers from the library stacks of the past. From School Library Journal Bustle features editor Moss (Glop: Nontoxic, Expensive Ideas That Will Make You Look Ridiculous and Feel Pretentious) takes a chatty and nostalgic dive through the history of the frivolous yet formative and influential genre of popular tween and teen series fiction of the 1980s and 1990s. Introducing readers to the early pioneers of modern-day YA literature, which began to solidify in the 1970s, the author then explores the themes and historical context of the paperback frenzy that resulted in the first book for young readers to make the New York Times Best Sellers list (a Sweet Valley entry, of course) and the career-making stardom of some its authors-including Ann M. Martin, R.L. Stine, Christopher Pike, Caroline B. Cooney, Susan Beth Pfeffer, and more. Moss points out the lack of diversity of most of the series and problematic story lines but also highlights works that were ahead of their times in representation and themes. Full-color reproductions of classic covers, interviews with cover artists and models, and profiles of editors and authors scattered throughout add visual interest. VERDICT YA history buffs and academics alike will want to read, reminisce, and chuckle through this fun and well-done work.-Shelley M. Diaz, School Library Journal?(c) Copyright 2011. Library Journals LLC, a wholly owned subsidiary of Media Source, Inc. No redistribution permitted. Review “Gabrielle Moss pays homage to the pastel-tinted golden years between Judy Blume and J.K. Rowling.”-The Washington Post “A love letter to and analysis of the books that an entire generation read voraciously.”- Buzzfeed News “A researched and nostalgic look back at what made the genre so successful, from cover art and feminist themes to fan favorite authors and publishers.”-Chicago Tribune“A history lesson, sociological study, and nostalgia trip in one.”-Hello Giggles “A nostalgic and hilarious tour through teen bookshelves and the Golden Age of YA literature.”-Bitch Media“Remember the days of The Baby-Sitters Club, Sweet Valley High, and The Saddle Club? If not, Paperback Crush will jog your memory in the loveliest possible way.”-Brit Co “Writer Gabrielle Moss has a chatty, lets-dish tone that works well for this trip down nostalgia road.”- Deseret News “A humorous and nostalgic ode to favorite YA series of the era, from The Baby-Sitters Club, Sweet Valley High, and beyond.”-Publishers Weekly“Part history, part snark, part love letter to the past, Paperback Crush is the hilarious pop culture history book millennial readers have been waiting for.”-Bustle“YA history buffs and academics alike will want to read, reminisce, and chuckle through this fun and well-done work.”-School Library Journal, Starred Review“Moss lovingly snarky writing style will fuel former teen-girl paperback readers appreciation, and the 1980s-style graphic design adds to the nostalgia.”-Book... -

Book : The Ultimate Evil The Search For The Sons Of Sam -...
-Titulo Original : The Ultimate Evil The Search For The Sons Of Sam-Fabricante : Quirk Books-Descripcion Original: The true-crime cult classic that inspired the Netflix docuseries The Sons of Sam: A Descent into Darkness and a companion podcast, The Ultimate Evil follows journalist Maury Terry’s decades-long investigation into the terrifying truth behind the Son of Sam murders. On August 10, 1977, the NYPD arrested David Berkowitz for the Son of Sam murders that had terrorized New York City for over a year. Berkowitz confessed to shooting sixteen people and killing six with a .44 caliber Bulldog revolver, and the case was officially closed. Journalist Maury Terry was suspicious of Berkowitz’s confession. Spurred by conflicting witness descriptions of the killer and clues overlooked in the investigation, Terry was convinced Berkowitz didn’t act alone. Meticulously gathering evidence for a decade, he released his findings in the first edition of The Ultimate Evil. Based upon the evidence he had uncovered, Terry theorized that the Son of Sam attacks were masterminded by a Yonkers-based cult that was responsible for other ritual murders across the country. After Terry’s death in 2015, documentary filmmaker Josh Zeman (Cropsey, The Killing Season, Murder Mountain) was given access to Terry’s files, which form the basis of his docuseries with Netflix and a companion podcast. Taken together with The Ultimate Evil, which includes a new introduction by Zeman, these works reveal the stunning intersections of power, wealth, privilege, and evil in America-from the Summer of Sam until today. Review “If the details of the Son of Sam case have always left you wondering if there was more to it, then Terry’s in-depth book will satisfy your curiosity. The Ultimate Evil is a true-crime classic that details one of the most notorious serial killings of all time, connecting the dots to a larger conspiracy.”-Geeks of Doom“This book isn’t just about Son of Sam...It’s about an author who drove himself into the ground trying to make sense of some of the most brutal crimes in American history. Is what he found true? That’s for you to ponder. But I will tell you, I wasn’t able to put this book down-and neither will you.”-Billy Jensen, author of Chase Darkness with Me About the Author Maury Terry was an award-winning investigative reporter whose work was prominently featured in both television and print media. He wrote for the Gannett newspaper chain, Vanity Fair, Gear, and Penthouse, among others. He reported on and coproduced nearly a dozen national TV specials about the Son of Sam conspiracy. Terry died in Yonkers, New York, in 2015. Joshua Zeman has been at the forefront of the true crime genre for the past decade. He is the director of the critically acclaimed film Cropsey, the docuseries The Killing Season, and Murder Mountain. Excerpt. © Reprinted by permission. All rights reserved. Introduction by Joshua ZemanI first learned of Maury Terry in the summer of 2008. At the time, I was directing my first documentary about five missing children and the man linked to their disappearances in my hometow of Staten Island, New York. My interest in the case was sparked by a local legend I’d heard years before about a boogeyman named Cropsey. According to the kids in our neighborhood, Cropsey was an escaped mental patient who lived in the tunnels beneath the old abandoned Willowbrook State School and came out late at night to snatch children off the street. For most of my childhood, Cropsey remained nothing more than a cautionary tale-until the summer of 1987. That was the summer I turned fifteen and Jennifer Schweiger, a twelve-year-old girl with Down syndrome, disappeared from our neighborhood. After more than six weeks of searching, her body was found on the grounds of the same Willowbrook State School. Though I didn’t know it back then, Willowbrook had a nefarious history. For decades, the “snake pit institution,” as Bobby Kennedy called it, had been warehousing hundreds of developmentally disabled children in ... -

They live in North Carolina. Excerpt. © Reprinted by permission. All rights reserved. Introduction:In 1776, fifty-six men risked their lives to defy the British and sign their names to the Declaration of Independence, but most Americans can’t name more than a handful. There’s John Hancock, of course. And most people will correctly identify Thomas Jefferson, Benjamin Franklin, and John Adams. But then the guessing begins: George Washington? Paul Revere? Thomas Paine? The Declaration of Independence is America’s birth certificate, its most celebrated document, and a model for later declarations crafted by struggling peoples the world over. Its signers were men who drew upon the best within themselves in the face of horrifyingly difficult circumstances. They also lived remarkably interesting lives. True, most of them were privileged members of the elite upper classes, but quite a few were just the opposite. And all these men were impacted by death, suffering, and adversity. Many were orphaned; even more lost children and wives for no other reason than that, in those days, the flu was deadly. So was asthma. So was a bad bout of diarrhea. Yet all these men carried on. Over the years, we’ve read newspaper articles and junk e-mails seeking to quantify and magnify the sufferings of the signers. Every July, their miseries are dusted off and trotted out along with barbecues and flags. It’s a shame that this is the only time of year Americans think about these men. But it’s even more disheartening to discover that most of the stories are just plain false. In the end, it doesn’t matter that none of the signers were killed for affixing their name to the Declaration of Independence or that none died in battle. What does matter is that they came together one sweltering summer under distressing circumstances and, despite huge differences in opinion, backgrounds, and values, decided to band together and form a new nation. Doing so was, without a doubt, an enormous, life-threatening risk, and if the colonies had not been triumphan-and honestly, it’s astoun... -

Frankenstein was just the beginning: horror stories and other weird fiction wouldn’t exist without the women who created it. Excerpt. © Reprinted by permission. All rights reserved. On a clear day, from the top of her house, Rosalie Dumarque could see all that was left of the human world. Standing on the peaked roof of the colossal Dumarque Manor, which was itself perched atop one of the tallest hills in the district, she could look right over the fifty-meter-high circle of Wall Sina into the terrain beyond. This early in the morning, the towns and fields of the Rose Zone were still hazy with the autumn fog, but if she squinted, Rosalie could just make out the white ribbon of Wall Rose running along the horizon, 130 kilometers away. The sight never failed to make her stomach tighten. More than a marvel of engineering, Wall Rose was a boundary. The fifty-meter-tall circle of stone marked the edge of human civilization, the end of the world. It hadn’t always been this way. For most of her childhood, the end of the world had been at Wall Maria, nearly twice as far away. Growing up, Rosalie had considered the walls a default component of reality, like the sky or the ground. They were always there, the unbreakable barrier that shielded everything she knew from the monsters that stalked the wilderness beyond. Then, five years ago, the monsters had broken through. Book : Geekerella A Fangirl Fairy Tale (once Upon A Con) -..
-Titulo Original : Geekerella A Fangirl Fairy Tale (once Upon A Con)-Fabricante : Quirk Books-Descripcion Original: Cinderella goes to the con in this fandom-fueled twist on the classic fairy tale romance. Part romance, part love letter to nerd culture, and all totally adorbs, Geekerella is a fairy tale for anyone who believes in the magic of fandom. Geek girl Elle Wittimer lives and breathes Starfield, the classic sci-fi series she grew up watching with her late father. So when she sees a cosplay contest for a new Starfield movie, she has to enter. The prize? An invitation to the ExcelsiCon Cosplay Ball, and a meet-and-greet with the actor slated to play Federation Prince Carmindor in the reboot. With savings from her gig at the Magic Pumpkin food truck (and her dad’s old costume), Elle’s determined to win…unless her stepsisters get there first. Teen actor Darien Freeman used to live for cons-before he was famous. Now they’re nothing but autographs and awkward meet-and-greets. Playing Carmindor is all he’s ever wanted, but the Starfield fandom has written him off as just another dumb heartthrob. As ExcelsiCon draws near, Darien feels more and more like a fake-until he meets a girl who shows him otherwise. From School Library Journal Gr 7 Up-Elle Wittimer loves Starfield, the popular sci-fi series that has garnered a cultlike fandom across the United States. When the latest teen sensation, Darien Freeman, is cast in the significant role of Prince Carmindor, Elle vents her displeasure on her fan blog and receives unprecedented readership. While working on the promotions for the show, Darien begins to feel the wrath of Starfields loyal fans and attempts to get out of an upcoming ExcelsiCon cosplay event by contacting the conventions organizer. Elles deceased father is the conventions founder, and Dariens text message is forwarded to her cell phone. The two develop an anonymous relationship via text messaging, which starts to attract the suspicion of Elles evil stepsisters and Dariens production team. When Elle decides to enter the cosplay contest, she must hatch a plan with her new friend, Sage, to avoid the interference of her nagging stepmother and acts of sabotage from her stepsisters. Predictably, Elles and Dariens paths cross at the ExcelsiCon ball, which ends with the expected lost slipper. The plot in this fairy-tale retelling wont be a mystery, but there are a few twists and turns that add a unique spin to the classic story. Unfortunately, the alternating voices of Darien and Elle are almost indistinguishable. From School Library Journal Baby-Toddler-Dog isnt sure whether the new critter in the house is another canine or something else. It doesnt smell like a dog or have a tail. Its front legs are different from its back legs. But the little one sleeps and stretches and howls and plays like a dog. No matter what it is, they are friends.
