He is also the creator of the blog and podcast OTIS: Odd Things I’ve Seen (oddthingsiveseen ), where he chronicles his visits to oddities around the world. Excerpt. © Reprinted by permission. All rights reserved. Guaranteed to See a Cryptid or Your Money Back Bigfoot exists: definitely, demonstrably, unequivocally. So do lake dinosaurs, monster cats, jet-sized birds, lizard-people, fish-people, wolf-people, moth-people, frog-people, and goat-people. All cryptids exist. Let me prove it to you. Wait, no-let me show them to you. But first: What the heck’s a cryptid? A cryptid is a creature or species whose existence is scientifically unproven. Maybe it’s been witnessed or rumored to exist, maybe it’s even been caught on video, but there is no definitive physical evidence to examine: no body to dissect, no remains to analyze. Scientists place those creatures in the category of fantasy instead of zoology. Cryptozoologists, though, who study and pursue cryptids, place them in the entirely separate category of cryptozoology. While the fantastical Mothman and the Jersey Devil may be the first cryptids you think of, a cryptid can be as comparatively mundane as a New England panther or an American lion; animals that once existed but are now believed by the scientific establishment to be extinct. Sometimes these animals are even discovered: the coelacanth, a fish thought to have gone extinct in the age of the dinosaurs, was discovered alive in 1938. A cryptid can even be an ordinary animal that is supposedly thriving where it couldn’t be, like a population of alligators in the Manhattan sewers, or freshwater octopuses. At least, that’s the traditional definition of a cryptid. Since cryptozoology was established in its modern form in the fifties, the definition has widened to encompass even more fantastical creatures as more people grow interested in the topic. This includes extraterrestrial entities, creatures from folklore such as mermaids and gnomes, sentient non-humans like the Menehune of Hawaii, and even (possibly) robots. This expanding definition of cryptid isn’t just because cryptozoology fans are a welcoming lot. It’s because cryptid has become synonymous with monster, of any kind. Cryptid fans love m...

Since Mars is their ruling planet, Aries individuals tend to be forceful, aggressive, and insistent on getting their way and winning. Although often childlike and open, they can also be hard to reach emotionally and find it difficult to express their complex feelings. They dislike being analyzed and take the attitude “what you see is what you get” with regard to themselves. The Aries Boss Aries bosses are born leaders, so there will be little doubt as to their wishes concerning the direction the group should take. Explicit, clear, and demanding, these fiery individuals will ask for every ounce of commitment and energy their employees can muster, and then some. Because they are so comfortable in this role, they are eager to make decisions and see them implemented. True individuals, they naturally respect individuality in others and are surprisingly open to and even expectant of their employees acting on their own, once they understand what is expected of them. Asking the Aries Boss for a Raise Aries bosses will probably already have anticipated you in this regard. Most likely they will offer you a raise (if you deserve it) on their own without your even a...

Online “Ben Winters makes noir mystery even darker: his latest novel sets a despondent detective on a suspicious suicide case-while an asteroid hurtles toward earth.”-Wired “Winters’s writing is funny, surprisingly tender, and thoroughly human.”-Ellery Queen Mystery Magazine “A sturdy, functional, entertaining page-turner.”-Greg Cook, WBUR.org “I’m eager to read the other books, and expect that they’ll keep me as enthralled as the first one did.”-Mark Frauenfedler, Boing Boing “The Last Policeman is extraordinary-as well as brilliant, surprising, and, considering the circumstances, oddly uplifting.”-Mystery Scene “Full of compelling twists, likable characters, and a sad beauty, The Last Policeman is a gem.”-San Francisco Book Review “This is a book that asks big questions about civilization, community, desperation and hope.”-io9 “In his Last Policeman trilogy, for which he won both the Edgar Award and the Philip K. Dick Award, Winters took a standard science fiction trope - the final months before an asteroid slams into Earth - and mixed it with some of the conventions of the detective novel, imbuing his apocalyptic scenario with an extra measure of urgency and poignancy.”-The San Francisco Chronicle “The Last Policeman succeeds both as a mystery, with a quirky detective and an intriguing whodunit, and as a piece of apocalyptic speculative fiction.”-Sacramento News & Review “Resonant and powerful.”-Locus “A promising kickoff to a planned trilogy. For Winters, the beauty is in the details rather than the plot’s grim main thrust.”-Kirkus Reviews, starred review “A genre-defying blend of crime writing and science fiction.” -Alexandra Alter, The New York Times Winner of the 2013 Edgar® Award for Best Paperback Original! What’s the point in solving murders if we’re all going to die soon, anyway? Detective Hank Palace has faced this question ever since asteroid 2011GV1 hovered into view. There’s no chance left. No hope. Just six precious months until impact. The economy spirals downward while crops rot in the fields. Churches and synagogues are packed. People all over the world are walking off the job-but not Hank Palace. He’s investigating a death by hanging in a city that sees a dozen suicides every week-except this one feels suspicious, and Palace is the only cop who cares. The first in a trilogy, The Last Policeman offers a mystery set on the brink of an apocalypse. As Palace’s investigation plays out under the shadow of 2011GV1, we’re confronted by hard questions way beyond “whodunit.” What basis does civilization rest upon? What is life worth?
