Book : Introduction To Modern Climate Change - Dessler,...
-Titulo Original : Introduction To Modern Climate Change-Fabricante : Cambridge University Press-Descripcion Original: This is an invaluable textbook for any introductory survey course on the science and policy of climate change, for both non-science majors and introductory science students. The second edition has been thoroughly updated to reflect the most recent science from the latest IPCC reports, and many illustrations include new data. The new edition also reflects advances in the political debate over climate change. Unique amongst textbooks on climate change, it combines an introduction to the science with an introduction to economic and policy issues, and is tightly focused on anthropogenic climate change. It contains the necessary quantitative depth for students to properly understand the science of climate change. It supports students in using algebra to understand simple equations and to solve end of chapter problems. Supplementary online resources include: a complete set of PowerPoint figures for instructors, solutions to exercises, videos of the authors lectures, and additional computer exercises. Review Im delighted to see an updated edition of Desslers textbook; the new edition reminds me why I liked the book so much in the first place. I used the first edition for my climate literacy courses for first-year non-science majors, as I was so impressed with its simple and compelling coverage of the science of climate change, and, just as importantly, its social and political context. The students loved the book - some even commented that it was the first time they had actually understood and enjoyed reading a science book. The revised version brings the book completely up to date, and will ensure it remains my number one recommendation for an introductory text on climate change. Steve Easterbrook, University of TorontoDesslers book is written so clearly that anyone can read it and understand the major issues in climate change. It hits just the right balance between rigor and comfort, making the whole topic more appealing and accessible to students. Deborah Lawrence, University of VirginiaI have used the first edition of Desslers book in several classes for non-science majors. The contents of the text were well-chosen from the vast amount of information available. The presentation is at an appropriate mathematical and scientific level for these classes. Students liked the text. The second edition includes updates from recent assessments (IPCC AR5 and the 2013 Social Cost of Carbon Update) and I look forward to using it. James C. Wilson, University of DenverReview of previous edition: Professor Desslers book is written for undergraduate non-science majors. He must believe in the impossible - that he can bring a topic as complex as climate change into focus for students with little background in science. However, I must say that Professor Dessler has succeeded. Students who read this book will achieve a level of understanding of climate change that they may, first, engage in an informed debate of public policy; second, understand the deep significance of Climategate; and third, explain and act upon the recent explosion of public interest in climate change. Ted Munn, University of TorontoReview of previous edition: The text provides a readable, concise summary of the science of climate change, but it is the nonscientific aspects of the book that set it apart … a well-crafted textbook. The writing is very accessible without being too simplistic. The combination of a broad overview of the science and policy of climate change is both novel and appropriate for … an introductory-level survey course on climate change. Reading the book was a learning experience for me, and I would happily recommend this book to anyone seeking an introduction to climate change. Guillaume Mauger, Bulletin of the American Meteorological SocietyReview of previous edition: The book reads extremely well: it uses stories, analogues, and examples to draw the reader into the story of the science of our changing ... -

Book : Grow The Pie - Edmans, Alex
-Titulo Original : Grow The Pie-Fabricante : Cambridge University Press-Descripcion Original: A Financial Times Book of the Year 2020! Should companies be run for profit or purpose? In this ground-breaking book, acclaimed finance professor and TED speaker Alex Edmans shows its not an either-or choice. Drawing from real-life examples spanning industries and countries, Edmans demonstrates that purpose-driven businesses are consistently more successful in the long-term. But a purposeful company must navigate difficult trade-offs and take tough decisions. Edmans provides a roadmap for company leaders to put purpose into practice, and overcome the hurdles that hold many back. He explains how investors can discern which companies are truly purposeful and how to engage with them to unleash value for both shareholders and society. And he highlights the role that citizens can play in reshaping business to improve our world. This edition has been thoroughly updated to include the pandemic, the latest research, and new insights on how to make purpose a reality. Review I do not know whether capitalism is in crisis. But I do know Alex Edmans superb book makes the case, compellingly and comprehensively, for a radical rethink of how companies operate and indeed why they exist. It is the definitive account of the analytical case for responsible business, but is at the same time practical and grounded in real business experience. It is a tour de force. Andy Haldane, Chief Economist, Bank of EnglandPoliticians are calling for large companies to be regulated or split up. In this compelling book Alex Edmans argues that there is indeed a problem with corporate behavior but that the solution may be simpler: change corporate purpose so that companies focus on growing the pie rather than grabbing more of it. Edmanss arguments are a powerful and persuasive antidote to much of the conventional wisdom about the corporate world. Oliver Hart, 2016 Nobel Laureate in EconomicsThis is a brilliant and timely book, taking the business case for responsible capitalism to a whole new level. Edmans provides a rigorous, evidence-based approach, exploring numerous angles around how businesses can (and, as he shows, must) combine profit-seeking with purpose as well as the role investors and other stakeholders can play in driving a genuine win-win approach. He tackles counter-arguments head-on and has the courage to expose examples of virtue-signalling that falsely discredit responsible businesses. Citing case studies collated over decades, its a great read, too, offering fascinating examples well beyond the usual suspects. Grow the Pie really has the power to convince the sceptics as well as encourage advocates consider new ways to embed the approach further in their businesses. Dame Helena Morrissey, financier and founder of the 30% ClubThis is a must-read book for anyone interested in reforming capitalism - particularly in its role of serving wider society. The book is grounded in academic evidence, but the ideas are highly practical, and recognize the need for business to be profitable as well as purposeful. Most companies have inspiring mission statements; Edmans provides a concrete framework for translating them into actual practice. He does not shy away from acknowledging the challenges with running a purpose-driven company - balancing multiple objectives, achieving investor buy-in, and making decisions where the key criteria cannot be quantified. Instead, he tackles them head-on, giving clear guidelines on how to navigate tough decisions, which he illustrates with powerful examples. Dominic Barton, former Global Managing Partner of McKinseyThe quest to encourage companies to adopt positive values, for the benefit of all stakeholders, sometimes seems long on vision and short on firepower. Edmans, a finance professor, provides plenty of ammunition to support the idea that visionary leaders can expand the whole pie in pursuit of purpose and profit. Book : Masterless Men Poor Whites And Slavery In The...
-Titulo Original : Masterless Men Poor Whites And Slavery In The Antebellum South (cambridge Studies On The American South)-Fabricante : Cambridge University Press-Descripcion Original: Analyzing land policy, labor, and legal history, Keri Leigh Merritt reveals what happens to excess workers when a capitalist system is predicated on slave labor. With the rising global demand for cotton and thus, slaves in the 1840s and 1850s, the need for white laborers in the American South was drastically reduced, creating a large underclass who were unemployed or underemployed. These poor whites could not compete for jobs or living wages with profitable slave labor. Though impoverished whites were never subjected to the daily violence and degrading humiliations of racial slavery, they did suffer tangible socio economic consequences as a result of living in a slave society. Merritt examines how these masterless men and women threatened the existing Southern hierarchy and ultimately helped push Southern slaveholders toward secession and civil war.***Winner of the 2018 Bennett H. Wall Award, from the Southern Historical Association, for the best book published in the previous two years on southern business or economic history. ***Winner of the 2018 Presidents Book Award, from the Social Science History Association, awarded annually to a first work by an early career scholar. Review ‘In Masterless Men, Keri Leigh Merritt offers a sweeping analysis of how we should understand the place of poor whites in the larger narrative of the Old South. Her detailed examination of the Deep Souths impoverished white class will deepen our understanding about the human and economic costs of Americas system of black slavery. Charles Bolton, University of North Carolina, Greensboro‘Merritt moves class front and center as she documents the brutal, unfair realities of life for poor whites struggling to survive in a society structured against them. Her work holds tremendous implications for our understanding of social relations, the economy, politics, and the law in the Old South. Jeff Forret, author of Race Relations at the Margins: Slaves and Poor Whites in the Antebellum Southern Countryside‘Keri Leigh Merritt reveals the parallel roots of white poverty and slavery in the antebellum South. With precision and conviction, she demonstrates that landlessness, low wages, and illiteracy, accompanied by legal and extra-legal harassment by the state, were not mere by-products of slavery, but the result of policies that enriched slaveholders while muting dissent by poor whites. Victoria Bynum, Texas State University, San MarcosEloquently argued, Merritt’s work will be of interest to economic, social, and legal historians as its attention to poor whites’ place in southern society provides a more complete understanding of the history of the 19th-century South. Essential. T. K. Byron, Choice… the lesson to be drawn from Merritt’s magnificent work is that the problem of justice requires enormous bridge-building exercises if we wish to level the playing field without worsening other forms of inequality. History shows us the limits of ideological progress, but also reveals opportunities that can be seized, if only we can muster the courage and the know-how. Robert L. Tsai, Los Angeles Review of Books Book Description This book examines the lives of the Antebellum Souths underprivileged whites in nineteenth-century America. Book Description Owning neither land nor slaves, poor whites comprised about a third of the American Souths white population in 1860. Focusing on land, labor, and legal history, Masterless Men shows what happens to excess workers in a slave society. About the Author Keri Leigh Merritt is an independent scholar in Atlanta, Georgia. Merritts work on poverty and inequality has garnered multiple awards, and she is a co-editor of a volume on American South labor history... -

Book : Grow The Pie How Great Companies Deliver Both Purpose
-Titulo Original : Grow The Pie How Great Companies Deliver Both Purpose And Profit-Fabricante : Cambridge University Press-Descripcion Original: A Financial Times Book of the Year 2020! What is a responsible business? Common wisdom is that its one that sacrifices profit for social outcomes. But while its crucial for companies to serve society, they also have a duty to generate profit for investors - savers, retirees, and pension funds. Based on the highest-quality evidence and real-life examples spanning industries and countries, Alex Edmans shows that its not an either-or choice - companies can create both profit and social value. The most successful companies dont target profit directly, but are driven by purpose - the desire to serve a societal need and contribute to human betterment. The book explains how to embed purpose into practice so that its more than just a mission statement, and discusses the critical role of working collaboratively with a companys investors, employees, and customers. Rigorous research also uncovers surprising results on how executive pay, shareholder activism, and share buybacks can be used for the common good. Book : Institutions, Institutional Change And Economic...
-Titulo Original : Institutions, Institutional Change And Economic Performance (political Economy Of Institutions And Decisions)-Fabricante : Cambridge University Press-Descripcion Original: Continuing his groundbreaking analysis of economic structures, Douglass North develops an analytical framework for explaining the ways in which institutions and institutional change affect the performance of economies, both at a given time and over time. Institutions exist, he argues, due to the uncertainties involved in human interaction; they are the constraints devised to structure that interaction. Yet, institutions vary widely in their consequences for economic performance; some economies develop institutions that produce growth and development, while others develop institutions that produce stagnation. North first explores the nature of institutions and explains the role of transaction and production costs in their development. The second part of the book deals with institutional change. Institutions create the incentive structure in an economy, and organizations will be created to take advantage of the opportunities provided within a given institutional framework. North argues that the kinds of skills and knowledge fostered by the structure of an economy will shape the direction of change and gradually alter the institutional framework. He then explains how institutional development may lead to a path-dependent pattern of development. In the final part of the book, North explains the implications of this analysis for economic theory and economic history. He indicates how institutional analysis must be incorporated into neo-classical theory and explores the potential for the construction of a dynamic theory of long-term economic change. Douglass C. North is Director of the Center of Political Economy and Professor of Economics and History at Washington University in St. Louis. He is a past president of the Economic History Association and Western Economics Association and a Fellow, American Academy of Arts and Sciences. He has written over sixty articles for a variety of journals and is the author of The Rise of the Western World: A New Economic History (CUP, 1973, with R.P. Thomas) and Structure and Change in Economic History (Norton, 1981). Professor North is included in Great Economists Since Keynes edited by M. Blaug (CUP, 1988 paperback ed.) Review At a time when economic and political institutions are being reformed and replaced all over the world, Norths book is required reading for all social scientists and policy makers. T.N. Srinivasan, Yale UniversityNorth here draws upon the literature concerning the formation of economic institutions...to ask significant questions about differences among economies across time and space...This is an exciting and stimulating work, and one that will leave its mark upon the work of economic historians. It will also be important for political scientists and other social scientists, to learn the message and relevance of an influential strain of non-mainstream economic thinking. Stanley Engerman, University of RochesterIn a careful but wide-ranging analysis grounded in rational-choice theory, he stresses the ways in which institutional arrangements, once adopted, may lead quite rational actors to behave in ways that are collectively suboptimal. Review of Books For Merritts poor (landless, slaveless, mostly propertyless) whites, relying on whiteness as a means of class mobility was normally out of the question, and the same elite and bourgeois institutions that sustained slavery also went a long way in oppressing poor whites: slavery as a driver of low wages and unemployment; an almost total lack of public schools and access to credit; slave patrols and behavioral laws and community surveillance as forms of social control and retributive justice (against poor whites, too); and the slaveholders monopolization of land, resources, credit, and political power. - Counterpunch Book Description This book examines the lives of the Antebellum Souths underprivileged whites in nineteenth-century America. The edition, which began with The Tempest and ended with The Sonnets, put into practice the techniques and theories that had evolved under the New Bibliography. Remarkably by todays standards, although it took the best part of half a century to produce, the New Shakespeare involved only a small band of editors besides Dover Wilson himself. Book : Mathematics For Machine Learning - Deisenroth, Marc..
-Titulo Original : Mathematics For Machine Learning-Fabricante : Cambridge University Press-Descripcion Original: The fundamental mathematical tools needed to understand machine learning include linear algebra, analytic geometry, matrix decompositions, vector calculus, optimization, probability and statistics. These topics are traditionally taught in disparate courses, making it hard for data science or computer science students, or professionals, to efficiently learn the mathematics. This self-contained textbook bridges the gap between mathematical and machine learning texts, introducing the mathematical concepts with a minimum of prerequisites. It uses these concepts to derive four central machine learning methods: linear regression, principal component analysis, Gaussian mixture models and support vector machines. For students and others with a mathematical background, these derivations provide a starting point to machine learning texts. For those learning the mathematics for the first time, the methods help build intuition and practical experience with applying mathematical concepts. Every chapter includes worked examples and exercises to test understanding. Programming tutorials are offered on the books web site. Review ‘This book provides great coverage of all the basic mathematical concepts for machine learning. Im looking forward to sharing it with students, colleagues, and anyone interested in building a solid understanding of the fundamentals. Joelle Pineau, McGill University, Montreal ‘The field of machine learning has grown dramatically in recent years, with an increasingly impressive spectrum of successful applications. This comprehensive text covers the key mathematical concepts that underpin modern machine learning, with a focus on linear algebra, calculus, and probability theory. It will prove valuable both as a tutorial for newcomers to the field, and as a reference text for machine learning researchers and engineers. -Titulo Original : The Art Of Electronics-Fabricante : Cambridge University Press-Descripcion Original: At long last, here is the thoroughly revised and updated third edition of the hugely successful The Art of Electronics. It is widely accepted as the best single authoritative book on electronic circuit design. In addition to new or enhanced coverage of many topics, the third edition includes 90 oscilloscope screenshots illustrating the behavior of working circuits, dozens of graphs giving highly useful measured data of the sort that is often buried or omitted in datasheets but which you need when designing circuits, and 80 tables (listing some 1650 active components), enabling intelligent choice of circuit components by listing essential characteristics (both specified and measured) of available parts. The new Art of Electronics retains the feeling of informality and easy access that helped make the earlier editions so successful and popular. It is an indispensable reference and the gold standard for anyone, student or researcher, professional or amateur, who works with electronic circuits. Review Who among us has not kept a cherished copy of AoE on our workbench throughout our careers? Engineers, hackers and makers of all stripes, rejoice for the third edition has been worth the wait! Packed with tons of delicious knowledge to navigate electronics in both work and hobby. An encyclopedia of electronics knowledge, [The Art of Electronics] is a pleasure to read through for tips and tricks and is an unbeatable resource. Take a day out to read a chapter - you will learn things you didnt even know you didnt know. Or, refer to the pin outs, diagrams, and techniques as necessary to guide you through a difficult project. If you think electrical engineering is magical then you must pick up this tome. Limor Ladyada Fried, Adafruit Industries. First of all, after I forklifted [Chapter 5] onto my reading table, I sat down and read it. It is simply spectacular. That may be an overly exclamatory language, but it is the only appropriate verbiage I can summon. Spectacular, deep and wide. I especially like the comments about interpreting specifications and the deconstruction of the Agilent voltmeters is just, well, wonderful. Jim Williams, Linear Technology Corp. Wow. Chapter 5 details every circuit artifact that Ive encountered in the past thirty years in a through, pragmatic, and straightforward way. My only twinge is that [it] disclosed and explained (in glorious graphical detail and with real part numbers) many topics that I thought were my personal trade secrets. I love the plots. I know that it must take an enormous effort to collate all of the device characteristics. Its worth the effort. The way, it presents the data allows the reader to get terrific perspective on a lot of landscape in a single view. Nice work. John Willison, founder, Stanford Research Systems. Horowitz and Hills third edition, beautifully upgrades their earlier work, with substantial updates to detail, and without compromise to style, content, or technical quality. Like the second edition Ive used for years, it is laser-focused on the working engineer. Delivered in folksy Horowitz and Hill style, it is rich with the kind of nitty-gritty information thats invaluable to circuit designers and manufacturers, much of which is absent (or difficult to find) elsewhere. This new book is a superb update, one which Im sure will be treasured by those close to the art of analog circuitry. Walt Jung, author, IC Op-Amp Cookbook. This epic work was created by two of the best experts in the field (with many others providing information). It defines the current state of the art in electronics. Most parts of the book will continue to be relevant for several decades. The 1124 pages (even more densely packed with highly accurate information than the pages of the second edition) will delight everyone who already knows about electronics. It is almost certain that you will like the third edition even more than the second. The ...

-Titulo Original : Understanding Coronavirus (understanding Life)-Fabricante : Cambridge University Press-Descripcion Original: Since the identification of the first cases of the coronavirus in December 2019 in Wuhan, China, there has been a significant amount of confusion regarding the origin and spread of the so-called coronavirus, officially named SARS-CoV-2, and the cause of the disease COVID-19. Conflicting messages from the media and officials across different countries and organizations, the abundance of disparate sources of information, unfounded conspiracy theories on the origins of the newly emerging virus and the inconsistent public health measures across different countries, have all served to increase the level of anxiety in the population. Where did the virus come from? How is it transmitted? How does it cause disease? Is it like flu? What is a pandemic? What can we do to stop its spread? Written by a leading expert, this concise and accessible introduction provides answers to the most common questions surrounding coronavirus for a general audience. Review ‘With all the technology and medical knowledge of the 21st century a pandemic virus has defeated us. This book tells us why and how that could happen and what we can do about it. And as a bonus we get a comparison with the 1918 pandemic Flu. All this wrapped up in a clear, understandable and interesting way. We learn what is happening to us now and how to better prepare for the future. Arnold J. This material, in the form of a mass of letters, extracts from and references to books was utilised in the second edition, as were Darwins pencilled corrections in his own volume of the first. The book is a study of the muscular movements of the face (both human and animal) triggered by the emotions being felt - a physical response to a mental sensation. Darwins detailed analysis of what actually happens to a body in a state of fear, or joy, or anger is illustrated by photographic images.
