Book : Killers Of The Flower Moon Adapted For Young Readers.
-Titulo Original : Killers Of The Flower Moon Adapted For Young Readers The Osage Murders And The Birth Of The Fbi-Fabricante : Yearling-Descripcion Original: A young reader edition of the New York Times bestseller and National Book Award finalist about one of historys most ruthless and shocking crimes, the Reign of Terror against the Osage people. In the 1920s, the richest people per capita in the world were members of the Osage Nation in Oklahoma. After oil was discovered beneath their land, the Osage rode in chauffeured automobiles, built mansions, and sent their children to study in Europe. Then, one by one, the Osage began to be killed off. As the death toll surpassed more than twenty-four Osage, the newly created F.B.I. took up the case, in what became one of the organizations first major homicide investigations. An undercover team, including one of the only Native American agents in the bureau, infiltrated the region, struggling to adopt the latest modern techniques of detection to bring an end to the deadly crime spree. Together with the Osage they began to expose one of the most chilling conspiracies in American history. In this youngification of the adult bestseller, critically acclaimed author David Grann revisits the gripping investigation into the shocking crimes against the Osage people. It is a searing indictment of the callousness and prejudice toward Native Americans that allowed the murderers to continue for so long and provides essential information for young readers about a shameful period in U.S. history... -

-Titulo Original : Devolver Al Remitente (return To Sender Spanish Edition)-Fabricante : Yearling-Descripcion Original: After Tylers father is injured in a tractor accident, his family is forced to hire migrant Mexican workers to help save their Vermont farm from foreclosure. Tyler isn’t sure what to make of these workers. Are they undocumented? And what about the three daughters, particularly Mari, the oldest, who is proud of her Mexican heritage but also increasingly connected her American life. Her family lives in constant fear of being discovered by the authorities and sent back to the poverty they left behind in Mexico. Can Tyler and Mari find a way to be friends despite their differences? In a novel full of hope, but no easy answers, Julia Alvarez weaves a beautiful and timely story that will stay with readers long after they finish it. About the Author Julia Alvarez is the author of several novels for young readers including How Tia Lola Came to Visit Stay, Finding Miracles, and Before We Were Free, winner of the ALA’s Pura Belpre Award. Her books for adults include How the Garcia Girls Lost Their Accents, In the Time of the Butterflies, and Once Upon a Quinceañera. She is a writer-in-residence at Middlebury College in Vermont. Excerpt. © Reprinted by permission. All rights reserved.

He did not know any of the people who would be there. He had never been to a dance. He could not speak to girls. He could not be with crowds of strangers. He could not, he finally decided, go. The gray gelding, Napoleon, was built from the ground up and butter fat. His roundness was not due to overfeeding or lack of exercise but to a most placid disposition and an ease of adapting himself to any kind of situation or way of life. He stood with one hind foot drawn in an easy, relaxed position and eyes half-closed. Only his long ears moved, and they just wobbled as if the weight of them was too much for him to bear at this particular moment. He was the picture of contentment; as peaceful as the June night which enveloped him. There was no reason for him to appear otherwise. He was perfectly happy with his life. The grass of his paddock moved in the night breeze, giving it the soft, liquid motion of the sea. There were stars and a moon, and together they shone frostlike on the fences and roofs of the barns and main house a short distance away. Finally the old gray roused himself to saunter about his paddock. His movements were slow and quiet. He was very particular in his choice of grass. He would stop only long enough to crop a few mouthfuls, then go on to other grasses that appealed more to his fancy and discriminating taste. But it wasnt long before he returned to his favorite haunt beneath the billowing oak tree. He closed his eyes again. All was quiet, and as it should be. The inky silhouette of a tall, black stallion moved in the adjacent paddock to his left. Teeth clicked sharply as the stallion cut the grass low and even. The grays wobbling ears were keen, and by using them he followed the movements of the Black. He was well aware, too, of the whereabouts of the burly black horse in still another paddock, the one on his right. He had heard Satan snort a few moments ago. The breeze became stronger, gently whipping his body with a shower of deep evening coolness. After the heat of day it felt very good. That there were no flies to bother him added to his enjoyment. For ideal comfort this was the way it should be. A fly-protected barn during the day, and at night the freedom of the paddoc...

Chapter 1 I had gone into the house to change my jeans, and I was only about halfway out of my boots--which were very muddy--when the phone started ringing. And it kept ringing, all the time I was pulling off my boots and hanging up my hat and pushing my hair out of my face. I was really wet--I’d been riding Happy in the arena when the rain fell out of the sky like water out of a bucket, and we were drenched so fast we just started laughing. Daddy was in the barn, and Mom jumped off of Jefferson and ran in there with him--she was right by the gate, so she didn’t get as wet as I did. I could barely see my way across the ring, the water was coming down so hard. But Happy didn’t care. All of our horses lived outside anyway. Rain was just a bath to them. And then it all stopped. There we were, standing in the aisle of the barn, looking out at the clouds blowing off and the sun shining through the misty air. Mom said, “Oh, I love California. The weather just comes and goes. And there are no tornadoes. I love that the best.” Back in Oklahoma, where Mom and Daddy had grown up, there were tornadoes every day, or at least that’s how they made it sound when they talked about it. But I had to change my jeans at least--my jacket had kept my shirt a little dry. The phone rang and rang, and I knew because of that it would be Jane Slater, and it was. Jane was a trainer at the big stable on the coast; she had helped us sell a horse there in the fall. She said, “Oh, Abby! How are you? I do so miss talking to you. What’s it been?” I said, “We saw you at New Year’s. How--” But she was excited about something, so she interrupted me. She said, “Then I didn’t tell you that Melinda is back, did I?” “No, when . . .” “She hasn’t grown an inch, and Ellen Leinsdorf thinks she’s her worst enemy! Their lessons are back to back, and they’re both riding Gallant Man, because, you know, there’s been a big brouhaha about Melinda’s parents’ divorce, and they have to half lease him to the Leinsdorfs to afford the board, which is fine, but, goodness! What am I talking about?” Ellen and Melinda were two students she taught; I’d helped her with them from time to time. Melinda was older--about ten--but Ellen was tougher. I laughed to think about them and said, “I don’t know.” “Oh, Abby, I miss you. I feel surrounded by little little girls!” I said, “I miss you, too.” “Well, why don’t you come over here and look at this horse, and I can see you.” “What horse?” “Such a sad story. But he’s a nice horse. His name is True Blue. Very pretty dappled gray, black mane and tail, black points. Is your dad around?” Just then, Daddy came in. I handed him the phone and ran upstairs. That was the first I heard of Blue. While I was looking for a clean pair of jeans, the rain came again, and by the time it was over, the arena was too soaked to ride any more that day, because even i... -

But with all the stress at school (the Big Four-Linda, Mary A., Mary N., Joan-have turned against her) and home (nothing feels right with her brother, Danny, gone), Abby cant help but seek comfort in the Georges and the Jewels, who greet her every day with soft nickers. Except for one: the horse who wont meet her gaze, the horse who bucks her off, the horse Daddy insists she ride and train. Abby knows not to cross her father, but she knows, too, that she cant get back on Ornery George. And suddenly the horses seem like no refuge at all. From Pulitzer Prize winner Jane Smiley comes an emotionally charged and action-filled novel for young readers, set in the vibrant landscape of 1960s California horse country. Review Starred Review, Publishers Weekly, July 20, 2009:A lyrical meditation on horses, families, and the vicissitudes of peer relationships among girls. Review, The Courier-Journal (Louisville, KY), October 3, 2009:The Georges and the Jewels is filled with fascinating details about the care and training of horses, and Abby is a refreshing heroine in todays snark-filled times. Review, Chicago Sun-Times, October 18, 2009:Smiley’s intricate and sophisticated knowledge of horses shines throughout this book, making it a guaranteed winner for horse-loving youngsters. Review, LATimes , September 27, 2009:I have never admired [Smileys] writing as much as I do in the first of what promises to be a series of books for children...The Georges and the Jewels can easily take its place on the shelf along with the great horse stories of childhood. Chapter 1 Sometimes when you fall off your horse, you just dont want to get right back on. Lets say he started bucking and you did all the things you knew to do, like pull his head up from between his knees and make him go forward, then use a pulley rein on the left to stop him. Most horses would settle at that point and come down to a walk. Then you could turn him again and trot off--its always harder for the horse to buck at the trot than at the lope. But if, right when you let up on the reins, your horse put his head between his knees again and took off bucking, kicking higher and higher until he finally dropped you and went tearing off to the other end of the ring, well, you might lie there, as I did, with the wind knocked out of you and think about how nice it would be not to get back on, because that horse is just dedicated to bucking you off. So I did lie there, looking up at the branches of the oak tree that grew beside the ring, and I did wait for Daddy to come trotting over with that horse by the bridle, and I did stare up at both their faces, the face of that horse flicking his ears back and forth and snorting a little bit, and the face of my father, red-cheeked and blue-eyed, and I did listen to him say, Abby? You okay, honey? Sure you are. I saw you bounce! Get up, now. I sigh... -

So dense it felt almost heavy on Ivans and Septembers heads as they made their careful way across the cove in the Aunt Nelda. Their world was cloaked so completely they hadnt been able to see the cabin from their own dock, and theyd lost sight of that too as soon as theyd shoved off. The stillness bordered on deadness--black water as shiny as a waxed table and no sound but the dull rattle of the oarlocks. They knew Mooseburgers cabin was due west of theirs and the butter clam bed a little south of that. September sat in the stern holding a hand compass between them so that Ivan could watch their bearing as he rowed the short way over. Book : Museum Of Thieves (the Keepers) - Tanner, Lian
-Titulo Original : Museum Of Thieves (The Keepers)-Fabricante : Yearling-Descripcion Original: Welcome to the tyrannical city of Jewel, where impatience is a sin and boldness is a crime. Goldie Roth has lived in Jewel all her life. Like every child in the city, she wears a silver guardchain and is forced to obey the dreaded Blessed Guardians. She has never done anything by herself and won’t be allowed out on the streets unchained until Separation Day. When Separation Day is canceled, Goldie, who has always been both impatient and bold, runs away, risking not only her own life but also the lives of those she has left behind. In the chaos that follows, she is lured to the mysterious Museum of Dunt, where she meets the boy Toadspit and discovers terrible secrets. Only the cunning mind of a thief can understand the museum’s strange, shifting rooms. Fortunately, Goldie has a talent for thieving. Which is just as well, because the leader of the Blessed Guardians has his own plans for the museum-plans that threaten the lives of everyone Goldie loves. And it will take a daring thief to stop him. . . . Museum of Thieves is a thrilling tale of destiny and danger, and of a courageous girl who has never been allowed to grow up-until now. About the Author Lian Tanner is a children’s author and playwright. She has worked as a teacher in Australia and Papua New Guinea, as well as a tourist bus driver, a freelance journalist, a juggler, a community arts worker, an editor, and a professional actor. Separation Day Goldie Roth hated the punishment chains. She hated them more than anything--except perhaps for the Blessed Guardians. As the heavy brass cuffs snapped around her wrists and the weight of the chains fell on her shoulders, she stared sullenly at the cobblestones. She knew what would happen next. Guardian Hope would quote something at her. Something stupid from the Book of the Seven. Guardian Comfort would probably quote something too, and they would both look pleased with themselves. Yes, here it came. Guardian Hope tugged on the punishment chains to make sure they were properly fastened; then she raised one plump finger. An Impatient Child, she said, Is an Unsafe Child. An Unsafe Child, said Guardian Comfort, folding his hands piously in front of him, puts All Other Children at Risk! All I did was try and hurry a little bit, thought Goldie. But she said nothing. She didnt want to get into more trouble than she already was. Not today. Oh no, definitely not today . . . She squinted out of the corner of her eye at her classmates. Jube, Plum, Glory and Fort were looking anywhere but at Goldie, hoping that her trouble wouldnt rub off on them. Only Favor was watching, her eyes serious, her hands flicking together and twitching apart in the small, secret movements of fingertalk. To the Blessed Guardians, it probably looked as if Favor was picking at the threads of her smock, or twisting the links of her little silver guardchain. But to Goldie, the words were as clear as glass. Dont worry. Not long now. Goldie tried to smile, but the weight of the punishment chains seemed to have dragged all the happiness out of her. This was supposed to be good day, she signed fiercely. Now look at me! Was that a scowl? said Guardian Hope. Did you scowl at me, Golden? No, Guardian, mumbled Goldie. It was a scowl, colleague, said Guardian Comfort. The morning was hot already, and he had pushed his heavy black robes away from his shoulders and was mopping his forehead. I distinctly saw a scowl! Perhaps the brass chains are not punishment enough, said Guar... -

Triple Crown 1 Alec Ramsay sat still and straight in his saddle, seemingly unaware of the thousands of eyes upon him. He wore black racing silks, and beneath his peaked cap the whiteness of his face made a startling contrast to his racing colors and the burly black horse beneath him. They were third in the parade to the post for the running of the classic Belmont Stakes. Alec wished they had drawn an outside position instead of the number 3 slot. He didnt like being so near the rail. Henrys instructions were to hold Satan until the field approached the middle of the backstretch before making his move. It would have been easier to do this from an outside post position. The parade had passed the clubhouse and was now opposite the grandstand. Alec didnt have to look to know that it was overflowing with people. The tumultuous roar from the stands took care of that. And he knew their eyes were upon Satan, wondering if the big three-year-old would win the Belmont Stakes, as he had won the Kentucky Derby and the Preakness, to take his place among the few great horses of the turf who had captured the Triple Crown! They wondered only because of the condition of the track. It was ankle-deep in mud after a heavy morning rain, and the early June sky was still overcast as a fine drizzle fell. The last remaining doubters of Satans greatness asked themselves, But can he race in the mud? He never has, you know. Alecs hand went to the thick, muscular neck of the colt as Satan sidestepped quickly to the middle of the track. He spoke to him, and the heavy ears swept back at the sound of his voice; then the restlessness left Satans giant body and he was back in line as the field continued parading past the stands. From the pushing, heaving wave of people at the rail, a man shouted, Hey, Ramsay! You think its a horse show? Alec heard the mans words, but his eyes never left the muddy track which he could see between Satans pricked ears. A Good Hands class maybe? the man called again. Only then did Alec Ramsay become aware that he was sitting much straighter in his saddle than the other jockeys. The whiteness of his skin gave way to a sudden flush of color, but his seat remained unchanged. He couldnt have sat his horse any other way. Bring him home, Alec! someone else shouted.... -

I was waiting for the exact right moment to present itself before making my move. That’s better than saying that I couldn’t remember how to speak when she came near and I tended to fall down when she noticed me. I’d planned to ask her out recently; I had the perfect first date in mind, one that would show her how lucky she was to be with a guy like me. The school dance. But I didn’t actually ask her. Thought about it, sure; planned to do it, absolutely; came right out and asked, not a chance. I’d thought I had all the time in the world to work on connecting the mind-mouth function when I was near her. Until I walked into the school cafeteria on Monday and saw some male-model wannabe sitting next to Tina at a lunch table. He was leaning in as he talked to her-close enough to smell her hair-and she laughed at something he said. I knew in an instant that I was in deep trouble. And that I’d run out of time. I went straight to my best buddy, JonPaul, who was sprinkling extra wheat germ on his organic peanut butter and raw honey sandwich. JonPaul is a health nut. “Who’s that?” I tilted my head toward Tina’s table. “The new kid.” “What new kid?” “Cash Devine.” “That’s his actual name?” “Yup.” “You’re kidding.” “Nope.” “That’s the fakest thing I ever heard.” JonPaul shrugged and swallowed a handful of vitamins with his soy milk. “How do you know him?” I asked. “He’s in my math class.” “What’s he doing at Tina’s table?” “She was assigned to show him around school, help get him familiar with everything.” “Since when did a welcome guide become standard operating procedure around here?” “I dunno. Are those organic grapes in your lunch? And if they are, can I have them? I haven’t been getting enough fiber lately and the skins would really help me out.” “Yeah.” I shoved what I knew to be run-of-the-mill produce reeking of pesticides toward him as fast as I could, trying to avoid a conversation about what happens to JonPaul’s digestive tract when he’s fiber-deprived. Been there, done that, have the horrible mental images. He lined up the grapes next to his baby car- rots, Greek yogurt, hardboiled eggs and stone-ground gluten-free crackers. I ate a handful of chocolate-covered potato chips while I studied Tina and the Threat. Cash caught me looking at him when Tina turned to talk to the girl on her other side, and he headed toward me, a big cheesy grin on his face. “Cash. Cash Devine. Good to know you.” He sounded like the politicians at the Labor Day parade who hand out mini-flags and ask for your support on Election Day. “Hey,” I grunted back. “Name’s Kevin.” “JonPaul,” he said, slapping my best friend on the back, “math is gonna be rough, buddy; hope I can count on you for some help.” “Sure.” “Do you know if my guide, Tina, has a boyfriend? She’s really hot.” I didn’t hear JonPaul’s reply; I saw his lips moving, but the pressure in my ears f... -

But after being seasick for five months, two weeks, and six days, I felt certain that luck had nothing to do with anything aboard the Lady Luck, a poorly named vessel if ever there was one. I had just spent the morning of my sixteenth birthday puking into a bucket, and I had little hope that the day would improve. I had no doubt that I was the unluckiest young lady in the world. It wasn’t always this way. Once I was the luckiest girl in the world. When I was eleven years old, in 1849, the sea seemed to me a place of great wonder. I would lie on my four-poster bed in my room overlooking the street and pretend I was on one of the sleek ships that sailed along the waterfront, returning from exotic, faraway places like China and the Sandwich Islands and Liverpool. When the light shone through the window a certain watery way, it was easy to imagine that I was bobbing gently on the waves of the ocean, the air around me warm and sweet and tinged with salt. We lived on Walnut Street, in a brick house with green shutters, just steps from the State House. Heavy silk drapes hung in the windows, and there was new gas lighting in every room. When the lights were on, it glowed like fairyland. I believed it to be the loveliest house in all of Philadelphia, if only because we lived there. And my father was the most wonderful father in Philadelphia-or perhaps the whole world. Each morning Papa would holler, “Where is my favorite daughter?” I would leap out of bed and rush to the top of the stairs, my feet bare, my hair a frightful mess. “She is right here!” I would shout. “And she is your only daughter!” “You’re not my Janey,” he would roar, his white beard shaking, his belly rolling with laughter. “My Janey’s not a slugabed! My Janey’s hair is never tangled!” My mother had died giving birth to me, so it had only ever been Papa and me. Papa always said that one wild, redheaded daughter was enough for any sane man. As for my sweet papa, how can I describe the wisest of men? Imagine all that is good and dear and generous, and that was my papa. Papa was a surgeon, the finest in all of Philadelphia. He took me on rounds with him to visit his patients. I was always proud to hold the needle and thread while he stitched up a man who had been beaten in a bar brawl. Or I would sit on a man’s belly while Papa set a broken leg. Papa said a man behaved better and didn’t scream so much when a little girl was sitting on his belly. I was the luckiest girl...

FLEMINGTON I’ve lived in this town my whole life and I can tell you . . . nothing ever happens. Each week, the farmers bring their chickens and eggs to market and the grain trucks dump and load up at Miller’s Feed Store on North Main. The streets are wide and clean, the shop-keepers are friendly, and all the children walk to school. At Christmas, Santa comes to the bank and gives out candy-stuffed stockings, and on Halloween there’s a big parade at the courthouse with cider and donuts and prizes for the Prettiest, Funniest, and Scariest. With all this, you’d think I’d be happy as a clam here in Flemington, and why that’s not so, I may never really know- but I do know that whenever I read National Geographic or Time or look through one of my uncle’s travel books- the ones with pictures of glaciers and deserts, palm-treed islands and busy cities- I’m always wishing myself into them. “You’re restless, Katie Leigh, just like your father was” is Mother’s explanation, but since he left us so long ago I guess that’s another thing I’ll never really know. THE PHOTOGRAPH From the photograph, we don’t look a lot alike: his hair dark brown (mine is black), his eyes hazel gray (mine are dusky green), his nose long and thin, (mine small and wide, a few scattered freckles along each side), but then . . . there’s that full lower lip (I have that) and his dimpled chin ( I have that too) and the way his head tilts just a little to the left, like he’s about to ask a question or trying to get a different perspective (Mother says I do this all the time). I guess I believe he’s a part of me, though I wish I had more than a five-by-seven photo to prove it. AT THE RAILYARD Sometimes I watch the train men turn engine, watch the box cars unhitch and recouple, watch the forklifts load the flatbeds and the fireman shovel coal. Sometimes I try to remember my father. Sometimes, when there’s nothing else to do, I stay all day until the last train leaves, and all I can see is a thin line of steam, way off in the distance. SULLEN At the tracks, I usually find Mike, his back against the big wooden box where the station master keeps his rain cape and his tools. We don’t talk much. But once in a while, we talk a lot. Mike told me his mother died when he was five and his father has been drinking too much ever since. On sunny days, I bring a book and read it while he whittles oak sticks into animals with his pocket knife, or with... -

Book : The Girl Who Saved Christmas - Haig, Matt
-Titulo Original : The Girl Who Saved Christmas-Fabricante : Yearling-Descripcion Original: Fans of A Boy Called Christmas will rejoice at this whimsical story of the first child to ever be gifted a Christmas present! A perfect read-aloud this holiday season. Amelia Wishart was the first child ever to receive a Christmas present. It was her Christmas spirit that gave Santa the extra boost of magic he needed to make his first trip around the world. But now Amelia is in trouble. When her mother falls ill, she is sent to the workhouse to toil under cruel Mr. Creeper. For a whole year, Amelia scrubs the floors and eats watery gruel, without a whiff of kindness to keep her going. Its not long before her hope begins to drain away. Meanwhile, up at the North Pole, magic levels dip dangerously low as Christmas approaches, and Santa knows that something is gravely wrong. With the help of his trusty reindeer, a curious cat, and Charles Dickens, he sets out to find Amelia, the only girl who might be able to save Christmas. But first Amelia must learn to believe again. . . . Matt Haig has an empathy for the human condition, the light and the dark of it, and he uses the full palette to build his excellent stories. --Neil Gaiman, Newbery-winning author of The Graveyard Book Review If somewhere in the afterlife Roald Dahl met Charles Dickens and they cooked up a new Christmas tale, it couldnt have much on this fleet, verbally rambunctious, heart-stealing follow-up to A Boy Called Christmas. - The New York TimesWith a little bit of naughty and a lot of nice, this Christmastime yarn is a veritable sugarplum. - Kirkus Reviews About the Author Matt Haig is an internationally bestselling author whose novels for children and adults have been translated into twenty-six languages. Do you know how magic works? The kind of magic that gets reindeer to fly in the sky? The kind that helps Father Christmas travel around the world in a single night? The kind that can stop time and make dreams come true? Hope. That’s how. Without hope, there would be no magic. It isn’t Father Christmas or Blitzen or any of the other reindeer that make magic happen on the night before Christmas. It’s every child who wants and wishes for it to happen. If no one wished for magic to happen, there would be no magic. And because we know Father Christmas comes every year, we know now that magic--at least some kind of magic--is real. But this wasn’t always the case. There was once a time before stockings and Christmas mornings spent excitedly ripping off wrapping paper. It was quite a miserable time, when very few human children had any reason to believe in magic at all. And so, the very first night that Father Christmas ever decided to give human children a reason to be happy and to believe in magic, he had a lot of work to do. The toys were in his sack, the sleigh and reindeer were ready, but as he flew out of Elfhelm, he knew there wasn’t enough magic in the air. He traveled through the northern lights, but they were hardly glowing at all. And the reason for the low magic levels was that there wasn’t much h...
