Book : Polar A Photicular Book - Kainen, Dan

-Titulo Original : Polar A Photicular Book-Fabricante : Workman Publishing Company-Descripcion Original: Take a stunning journey to the ends of the earth through the colorful, fluid motion of Photicular® technology. A phenomenon first seen in the bestsellers Safari and Ocean, Photicular technology uses sliding lenses and video imagery to display realistic living motion in the pages of a book. It’s like a movie in your hand. Penguins waddle in their irresistibly happy way. A walrus lumbers across the snowy landscape. There’s a polar bear with her lively cubs. A beluga whale, breaching. A team of sled dogs sprinting directly at the viewer. And the miracle of the Northern Lights, shimmering like a silk rainbow through the star-filled night.National Geographic writer Carol Kaufmann brings the reader along on a voyage to the North and South Poles, and writes a lively and informative essay for each image, including vital statistics for each animal, such as their size, range, habitat, and more. From School Library Journal Gr 3-6-The team that produced Safari (2012) and Ocean (2014, both Workman) this time tackles the polar regions. Dancing penguins, flying snowy owls, and running sled dogs are among the polar animals portrayed in creations called photiculars, or moving, three-dimensional, hologram-esque depictions. Both poles are described and deftly differentiated: the Arctic is an area of permanently frozen ice, while the continent of Antarctica is completely covered by a layer of ice. Chapters include a photicular and brief information on the animals size, habitat, range, diet, life span, and population. A page of text fleshes out the summary with detailed factual and often entertaining material. For example, male reindeer shed their antlers in November and grow them back them in the spring, but since females keep their antlers through the winter, Santas reindeer are all females. Threats to each animal are covered, including the effects of global warming. A glowing photicular of the northern and southern lights finishes this sampling of life on the two poles. The readable and enlightening material makes this a worthy addition. However, the fascinating, almost magical illustrations will easily attract enthusiastic readers and the design might prove too fragile for the wear and tear of circulation. VERDICT An intriguing offering for collections willing to take the risk of damage.-Frances E. Millhouser, formerly at Fairfax County Public Library, VA About the Author Dan Kainen is an artist, designer, and inventor living in New York City. He is the creator of the bestselling Photicular books Safari, Ocean, Polar, Jungle, and Wild. His website is DanKainen . While working with some of the pioneers of holography, Dan created a special spotlight that was used by Soho’s Museum of Holography to light holograms. The related field of holography led to Dan’s interest in lenticular art and, in turn, after nearly a decade of research and experimentation, to the creation of his “Motion Viewer,” his third patent in that field and the inspiration for Safari and the other Photicular books. Carol Kaufmann is the author of 97 Ways to Make a Cat Like You and co-author of the bestselling Photicular books Safari, Ocean, and Polar (Oct. 2015). A freelance writer and editor, her work for National Geographic and other publications has taken her to all corners of the globe, from the Pacific Ocean’s floor to the top the Atlas Mountains. In addition to National Geographic, her writing has appeared in the New York Times’ Draft column, Reader’s Digest, where she was the National Affairs Reporter, The Washington Post, George, and in the anthology A Woman’s Europe. Book : Amazing Gracie A Dogs Tale - Beckloff, Mark

-Titulo Original : Amazing Gracie A Dogs Tale-Fabricante : Workman Publishing Company-Descripcion Original: Review Its funny how the smallest things can change a life. Gracie was that thing. If youre short on inspiration, read Amazing Gracie. -Chicago Tribune It was love at first sight. Amid the frenzied barking and prancing of a house full of Great Danes, one pup was shivering in the corner. Gracie. But when Dan Dye reached her, she struggled to her feet like a clumsy foal, raised her forehead to his, and announced, as clearly as if she had actually spoken the words, You know Im the one. Now get me outta here! By turns funny, moving, tender, and inspiring, Gracies tale is a treat for every dog lover. There is Gracies first morning, racing around Dan in the snowy yard. Gracies first determination to prove to her step-sisters, Dottie the Dalmation and Sarah the Black Lab, that shes one of the girls. Gracies defiant romance with a pint-size charmer named Byron, a Boston Terrier from the wrong side of the fence. Then born of necessity, the eureka moment: When Gracies delicate constitution starts turning into anorexia, Dan teaches himself how to cook, and in three days is baking her the cookies that will spur her appetite, launch Three Dog Bakery, and transform their lives forever. Courage. Compassion. Kindness. Soul. Tenacity. And joy, above all, joy. These qualities Gracie possessed in abundance, and shared with everyone, human or canine, who had the good fortune to cross her path. From the Back Cover She was the loneliest puppy in the litter-a deaf and partially blind albino Great Dane. She had huge, sky blue eyes. And when Dan Dye reached for her, she struggled to her feet like a clumsy foal, raised her forehead to his, and announced, as clearly as if she had actually spoken the words, You know Im the one. Chapter One Blue is a nice word for how I felt. I must have looked like a cliche of mourning: gray late-November Sunday afternoon, me in raggedy sweats and a two-day beard, slumped down in a Sears Barca-Lounger that looked almost as good as it had the day I rescued it from a Dumpster my freshman year in college. All I needed was a half-empty bottle of whiskey, a crow on my shoulder, and an ashtray full of unfiltered cigarette stubs to finish the picture: Man Grieving Lost Loved One. It didnt make it any easier that the loved one was my childhood best friend of eighteen years-my dog, Blue. The phone could ring all day; I just sat and stared at it. I wasnt trying to avoid people. I just didnt have anything to say. Except to Blue. And she couldnt hear me anymore. There arent any diplomats or charm school graduates among my friends and family members, so their attempts to comfort me about Blue usually had the opposite effect. Shes probably happier now was a favorite, along with you can always get another one-though nothing could top thank God it was only a dog! Only two people managed not to make me feel worse. One was Anne, my friend and fellow copywriter at Midwestern Company, who had lost her beloved golden retriever, Arthur, only a few months earlier. The other was Mark, my best friend, new housemate, future business partner, and generally the soul of good sense, skepticism, and bad taste. Mark Beckloff and I had just gone in on a house together, a dilapidated mansion on Holmes Street in the heart of Kansas City. We planned to fix it up and sell it for a cool profit that would let us b...

  • Book : The Yogi Book - Berra, Yogi
    Precio:  $36,909.00

Book : The Yogi Book - Berra, Yogi

-Titulo Original : The Yogi Book-Fabricante : Workman Publishing Company-Descripcion Original: Celebrate one of the greatest and most beloved baseball players who ever lived-and certainly the most quoted. The Yogi Book is the New York Times bestseller filled with Yogi Berra’s immortal sayings, plus photographs, a career timeline, and appreciations by some of his greatest fans, including Billy Crystal and Tim McCarver. Yogi Berras gift for saying the smartest things in the funniest, most memorable ways has made him a legend. The Yogi Book brings all of his famous quotes together in one place-and even better, gives the story behind them. It aint over till its over.-that’s Yogis answer to a reporter when he was managing the Mets in July 1973, and they were nine games out of first place (not only quotable, but prophetic-they won the pennant). Nobody goes there anymore. Its too crowded.-Yogis comment to Stan Musial and Joe Garagiola about Ruggeris restaurant in St. Louis in 1959. It gets late early out there.-Yogi describing how shadows crept across Yankee Stadiums left field during late autumn afternoons. From the Inside Flap Hardly anyone would quarrel...that Winston Churchill has been replaced by Yogi Berra as the...favorite source of quotations. (The New Yorker) Yogi Berra was one of the first guys to allow himself to be kidded by his teammates. A shrewd move--they made him one of the most famous personalities in America. (Tim Mccarver) Yogis son Larry and I played on the Montclair High School Basketball team together. At the time, Yogi represented Yoo-Hoo soft drinks. When wed win, Yogi would bring the Yoo-Hoo to the locker room. When wed lose, we got nothing. Prior to the games, Yogi would tell us, If you win, you get the Yoo-Hoo, if you lose you get the Boo-Hoo! (Leonard S. Coleman Jr.) Yogi came back to my dressing room after our show at the Garden State Arts Center in New Jersey. He has always been one of my heroes. I felt like I was in the locker room after hitting a home run and winning the World Series. Yogi looked at me and said, Wow, kid, I wouldnt want to do what you do...the works too hard! ( Talking to Yogi Berra about baseball is like talking to Homer about the gods. (Bart Giamatti) When I was on Saturday Night Live, Yogi played himself in a mock documentary called Ballplayers. Christopher Guest and I played 75-year-old black ballplayers talking about the old days. We acted our hearts out. Yogi had one line and stole the movie. Ill never work with him again! (Billy Crystal) A conversation with Yogi Berra is as memorable as seeing a game in Yankee Stadium in its heyday. (Frank Sinatra) I was standing at home plate and the announcer said, Now catching for the Yankees, Yogi Berra. Id never heard of him and there he was--his shin guards and chest protector were too long--and I thought, Who are they trying to kid with this guy? Well, I played against him for ten years and I appreciated his abilities more and more and more. He made the pitchers pitch. And he was a damn good hitter! (Ted Williams) I make a lot of speeches. Often, to illustrate a point, I reach back for a Yogi expression because Yogi can sum up a situation like nobody else. Thanks, Yogi. (Brendan T. Byrne) Yogi Berra is a national treasure. Ive been using his remarks to close all my speeches and they always bring huge laughs. I love Yogi--always have, always will. (Larry King) From the Back Cover The beloved philosopher Yogi Berra has a gift for saying the smartest things in the funniest ways. His off-the-cuff wisdom is the stuff of legend surprising, immediate, profound, and endlessly quotable. Why never to give up:It ain’t over till it’s over.”Advice on finding your way:When you come to a fork in the road, take it.”The mind-body problem:You can’t think and hit at the same time.”Gathered together by the man himself, The Yogi Book is the definitive collection of Yogi-isms. It includes appreciations from some of Yogi’s biggest fans, and a time line of ...

The job is using words, pictures, stories, and music to seduce strangers. In the industrial, mass-media, consumer economy of the past, the job was called advertising, and “Mad Men” did it. In today’s service-based, social media-focused, information economy, the job is called life, and everyone does it. Here’s how you can do it. And do it better. About the Author Josh Weltman is the advertising consultant and a co-producer on the hit show Mad Men. Introduction The Job That Was Once Called Advertising The job was using words, pictures, stories, and music to make someone somewhere do something. In the industrial, mass-media, consumer economy of the past, the job was called advertising, and “Mad men” did it. In our modern, service-based, social-media-centric information economy, the job is called life, and everybody does it.Once it was the job of these advertising executives on Madison Avenue-“Mad men”-to be the public champions of products and services, making businesses successful and customers happy. Don Draper always seemed to know exactly how to do it. He knew what the business goal of the advertising was. He knew how to create an insightful, persuasive message. And he had teams of experts to help him decide which media would help him do the job best.In today’s information economy, the power to persuade remains the coin of the realm. But persuasion is no longer the job of just a creative director and a host of media buyers. Today it’s everyone’s job. People working in today’s information economy spend all or most of their time and effort trying to get someone somewhere to do something. From the CEO of a multinational company trying to establish a presence on to a teenager tweeting about a pair of awesome-looking jeans, everyone needs to be able to effectively persuade someone, whether it’s a boss or a boyfriend, a customer or a committee. The problem is that most people today don’t feel equipped to craft messages or take action with the same confidence and certainty as Mad Men’s Don Draper. Two things confound them. First, most are a lot less familiar with the principles of persuasion than they are with the means. They’re not quite sure what makes a message persua...

Book : Parentspeak Whats Wrong With How We Talk To Our...

-Titulo Original : Parentspeak Whats Wrong With How We Talk To Our Children--and What To Say Instead-Fabricante : Workman Publishing Company-Descripcion Original: A provocative guide to the hidden dangers of “parentspeak”-those seemingly innocent phrases parents use when speaking to their young children. Imagine if every time you praise your child with “Good job!” you’re actually doing harm? Or that urging a child to say “Can you say thank you?” is exactly the wrong way to go about teaching manners? Jennifer Lehr is a smart, funny, and fearless writer who “takes everything you thought you knew about parenting and turns it on its ear” (Jennifer Jason Leigh). Backing up her lively writing and arguments with research from psychologists, educators, and organizations like Alfie Kohn, Thomas Gordon, and R.I.E. (Resources for Infant Educarers), Ms. Lehr offers a conscious approach to parenting based on respect and love for the child as an individual. Review “A thought-provoking read that will prompt parents of all stripes to consider what theyre saying when they talk to their kids.”- Booklist “Underlying her friendly, enjoyable critique of certain phrases parents use reflexively-the kind that lead us to wonder, ‘How did my mother get in my larynx?’-Lehr offers a substantive and subversive message of respect for kids. The chapter about time-outs is worth the price of the book by itself, but I highly recommend you read the whole thing.” - Alfie Kohn, author of Unconditional Parenting and The Myth of the Spoiled Child “Parentspeak is the antidote to all those words we find ourselves saying to our children automatically, because everyone else says them: ‘Good job!’ . . . ‘Say you’re sorry.’ . . . ‘Don’t cry, you’re okay.’ . . . ‘Where’s my kiss?’” Lehr holds these and other thoughtless responses up to the light, where we suddenly see through them. I love Lehr’s clarity, her respect for children, and her ability to make it fun for readers as they have their worldview dismantled and renovated. Important for all parents; I will be recommending it to everyone.” - Dr. Laura Markham, author of Peaceful Parent, Happy Kids: How to Stop Yelling and Start Connecting “Smart, audacious, and often hilarious. Takes everything you thought you knew about parenting and turns it on its ear.” - Jennifer Jason Leigh, actress, LBJ “I’m obsessed with this brilliant gem of a book. I’m sharing it with my spouse, in-laws, extended family, and babysitters as a way to start discussions about when to ask for hugs, whether ‘please’ and ‘thank you’ are always necessary, and that awful thing that constantly comes out of my mouth: ‘Be careful!’ What I love about Jennifer is that she deals out the most incisive, specific, modern advice, but then shares honest, authentic, and even awful true stories about her own mistakes. It’s like getting on the phone with the best expert and your best friend all at once.” - Jill Soloway, creator of Transparent “If the phrase ‘Good job, buddy!’ has ever made you cringe and you’re not sure why (except that you just heard it 6,873 times on the playground, including 146 times coming from your own mouth), this book is for you. Jennifer Lehr’s serious, skeptical look at why we sound so patronizing, controlling, and fake nice when we talk to our kids may change not only the way you talk to yours, but even the way you bring them up. Language is power, and this powerful book blows my mind-a fascinating read.” - Lenore Skenazy, founder of the book, blog, and movement Free-Range Kids “Beautifully bold. This book bucks convention so well you’ll wonder why you never questioned these platitudes before. Jennifer Lehr deeply understands kids, and her book is a lifesaver. Get ready to shake up your brain, ditch old habits, and discover what the parent-child relationship can really be.” - Heather Shumaker, author of It’s OK Not to Share and It’s OK to Go Up the Slide “Children, even the youngest ones, are not dolls or pets; they are human beings, more intelligent than most adults realize. In this often witty, always highly engaging book, Jenni...

From Publishers Weekly Conner, author ( Everyday Opportunities for Extraordinary Parenting) and host of the popular public radio program The Parents Journal, offers more than 700 ideas for play without plugs, batteries or beeps in this imaginative collection. Conner points out that electronic play has a number of drawbacks-contributing to the rise in childhood obesity and isolation, and limiting creativity-while unplugged play builds strong bodies, helps kids forge friendships and expands the mind. In an effort to get back to the basics of play, Conner began collecting and inventing hundreds of games, then tested them on groups of children ages one to 10. The author divides the book into three sections-for toddlers, preschoolers and the six-to-10 set-with subsections on solo play, parent and child, playing with others and birthday parties. She covers a wide range of activities, from noodle necklaces to toddler basketball with a laundry basket, including indoor and outdoor play for rain or shine, with clear instructions as well as discussions of safety issues. Child development experts such as Fred Rogers and Benjamin Spock have emphasized the significance of play; Conner has taken her sources at their word and produced a fun-filled compendium likely to become a dog-eared resource for parents seeking whimsical yet practical ways to unplug the electronics and promote the physical, cognitive and emotional benefits of plain, old-fashioned play.
