  • Book : Pick A Pine Tree - Toht, Patricia
    Precio:  $59,699.00

Book : Pick A Pine Tree - Toht, Patricia

-Titulo Original : Pick A Pine Tree-Fabricante : Candlewick-Descripcion Original: A festive read-aloud brimming with all the joy and excitement of Christmastime - beginning, of course, with picking out a tree! Part of the magic of the Christmas season stems from the traditions that families and friends take part in every year: hanging up stockings; putting lights in the windows; and, one of the most important of all, picking out and taking home the Christmas tree. With style and warmth, debut author Patricia Toht and Jarvis, the author-illustrator of Alan’s Big, Scary Teeth, evoke all the rituals of decorating the tree - digging out boxes jam-packed with ornaments and tree trimmings, stringing tinsel, and, at long last, turning on those twinkling lights. Joyously drawn and rhythmically written, this celebration of family, friends, and the holiday season is as merry as the tradition it depicts. From School Library Journal PreS-Gr 2-A family visits a pine tree lot to pick out the perfect tree. Rhyming, instructional text accompanies the family as they transport the tree, set it up, unpack decorations, and find friends to help decorate it. For example, on how to decorate the tree: Stretch along some/twinkling lights,/a colored mix/or simply white…Start up top/or near the base;/wrap around/and tuck in place. Finally, when the tree is crowned with a star, the tree skirt is laden with presents, and the lights are plugged in: LOOK! Its not a pine tree/anymore. Its a…CHRISTMAS TREE! Friends and family members gaze at it, awestruck, on a dazzling spread that requires a vertical orientation for added drama. The final scene is a view of the familys house after nightfall, twinkling with starlight and strung lights, and a wish for a Merry CHRISTMAS, one and all! The pencil, chalk, paint, and digitally colored paintings are brimming with holiday cheer and warmth. VERDICT Share with little ones prior to decorating a tree or as secular Christmas fare for holiday storytimes.-Shanna Kim, Los Angeles Public Library Review The short, rhyming text has a bouncy, appealing tone...Delightful mixed-media illustrations use a flattened perspective, simple shapes, and glowing, light-filled backgrounds for a fresh take on the tree-decorating tradition. The illustrations are all in double-page-spread format with compositions that will work well for reading to a group or with just one child in a lap. Pick this delightful story for a Christmas storytime, for library collections, or for family reading around the Christmas tree. -Kirkus Reviews (starred review) Holiday spirit crackles in Toht’s warm, step-by-step recounting of how humble stately pines transform into shimmering Christmas trees...Jarvis’s chalk and pencil texturing adds to the sense of a casual, homey holiday filled with traditions many families will recognize. -Publishers Weekly The pencil, chalk, paint, and digitally colored paintings are brimming with holiday cheer and warmth. Share with little ones prior to decorating a tree or as secular Christmas fare for holiday storytimes. -School Library Journal Toht’s rhyming text is greatly illuminated by Jarvis’s mixed-media illustrations, which imbue each step in the process with holiday warmth and capably capture that satisfying, twinkling glow of Christmas decorations. -The Horn Book About the Author Patricia Toht once owned a children’s bookshop called Never Never Land before turning a love of books into a love of writing. Lovelocks pigmented ink illustrations capture details about the machines-from treads to gears-in a style that is graphic and yet painterly. Book : Encyclopedia Prehistorica Dinosaurs The Definitive...

-Titulo Original : Encyclopedia Prehistorica Dinosaurs : The Definitive Pop-Up-Fabricante : Candlewick-Descripcion Original: From renowned pop-up masters Robert Sabuda and Matthew Reinhart comes an awe-inspiring tribute to the worlds most beloved extinct animals and their 180-million-year reign on our planet. Open this book and a massive T. REX springs out, flashing a startling jawful of jagged teeth. Turn the next spread and a ravishing raptor unfurls and appears to fly off the edge of the page. Inside the amazing ENCYCLOPEDIA PREHISTORICA: DINOSAURS are shield bearers in full-body armor, creatures with frilly headgear, and weighty, long-necked giants. There are even amusing tidbits on the history of paleontology itself - like a pop-up version of a Victorian New Years dinner in the belly of a dinosaur model, or a pair of scientists locked in a literal tug-of-war over bones. Full of fascinating facts and lighthearted good humor, this breathtaking book includes fascinating, up-to-the-minute information about popular dinosaurs as well as many lesser-known varieties. With each of six spreads featuring one spectacular, large pop-up as well as booklets of smaller pop-ups and text, ENCYCLOPEDIA PREHISTORICA: DINOSAURS is a magnificent display of paper engineering and creativity - an astonishing book that will be read, admired, and treasured forever. From School Library Journal Kindergarten-Grade 4-Informational tidbits appear alongside exquisitely designed pop-up constructions in this visually stunning overview of all things dinosaur. Each spread features a spectacular paper sculpture of a particular species (e.g., Ankylosaurus or Triceratops) along with a brief paragraph of text. Smaller foldout sections, which open like miniature books and also incorporate pop-ups, cover additional topics (Dinosaur Detectives and Mystery Extinction) and introduce other dinosaurs and their characteristics. Rendered in warm earth tones and speckled with splashes of color, the three-dimensional creatures move with a life of their own as they gracefully extend their bodies into a full stretch or lurch toward readers with jaws open wide. Be forewarned: the book is so enticing that children will find it impossible to keep their hands off it, possibly causing problems with the delicate pop-ups. -Joy Fleishhacker, School Library Journal Copyright © Reed Business Information, a division of Reed Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved. From Booklist K-Gr. 3. With Sabuda lending deft paper engineering to artwork rendered by Reinhart, who also wrote this books text, the Mesozoics major players leap into three dimensions. Pop-ups featured on the six spreads include a gargantuan brachiosaurus; an anklyosaurus studded with paper spikes; and, perhaps most impressive from a technical standpoint, a minutely detailed T. rex skeleton. Each spread also contains as many as four foldout minibooks, bristling with their own tiny pops. The brief paragraphs of text never go much beyond cute sound bites (Was It a Can Opener? asks one headline, referring to the einosaurus hooked nose horn), and the abstract, textured style in which the pop elements are painted may frustrate some childrens efforts to imagine how the oddly angled assemblages translate into real beasts. Information about whether the bold color schemes spring from fact or simple aesthetics would have been a plus. Will these problems prevent this from being gobbled up as voraciously as one spreads allosaurus tucks into a lump of dino flesh? Not on your life. Jennifer Mattson Copyright © American Library Association. All rights reserved Review Dont just look at the brilliantly designed and executed pop-ups of more than 35 dinosaurs; the engaging text is also a great introduction to everyones favorite extinct creatures. -The New York Times Book Review With so many layers and moving paper parts - water-colored on all sides - readers may begin to feel like paleontologists unearthing fossils. Dino fans wont be disappointed. -Publishers Weekly, starred review This tri...

Book : A Drowned Maidens Hair A Melodrama - Schlitz, Laura..

-Titulo Original : A Drowned Maidens Hair: A Melodrama-Fabricante : Candlewick-Descripcion Original: People throw the word classic about a lot, but A Drowned Maidens Hair genuinely deserves to become one. - Wall Street Journal Maud Flynn is known at the orphanage for her impertinence, so when the charming Miss Hyacinth and her sister choose Maud to take home with them, the girl is as baffled as anyone. It seems the sisters need Maud to help stage elaborate seances for bereaved, wealthy patrons. As Maud is drawn deeper into the deception, playing her role as a secret child, she is torn between her need to please and her growing conscience - until a shocking betrayal makes clear just how heartless her so-called guardians are. Filled with tantalizing details of turn-of-the-century spiritualism and page-turning suspense, this lively historical novel features a winning heroine whom readers will not soon forget. Review It was not until the Misses Hawthorne boarded the train that Maud was able to open her book. She had ridden in a train once before, when she left St. Annes Childrens Home for the Barbary Asylum, and she was glad of it, because it allowed her to assume the nonchalance of a world traveler. She sat down primly, back straight. You mustnt read in the train, said Judith Hawthorne. Youll be sick. Maud was sure she would not be sick. She opened her mouth to argue and then remembered that she had made up her mind to be perfectly good. She shut her book, folded her hands on top of it, and answered, No, maam. Miss Hyacinth has something to say to you, continued Judith, and Maud, getting the hang of it, piped up, Yes, maam. The two sisters looked at each other. After a moment, Hyacinth gave a little laugh. Maudy, do you remember what you said earlier today - about how you would do whatever we asked of you? Maud had once slapped a little girl who tried to nickname her Maudy. She replied, Yes, maam. I remember. I meant it, too, she added generously. Good. Hyacinth hesitated for a moment. Do you like secrets, Maud? Maud thought about it. I like to know secrets, she said at last, but I dont like secrets that arent mine. Apparently this was not the answer Hyacinth had expected. She changed the subject. Do you remember what I told you in the bookstore? That you wouldnt be going to school right away? Yes, maam. Are you sorry for that? Do you mind very much? No, maam. Thats good. Hyacinth lowered her voice mysteriously. You see, Maud, Judith and I have a secret. If you were to go to school, that secret might come out. In a little while, once we are sure of you, we will tell you everything, but first we have to make sure we can trust you. Later on, well ask you to help us with our work. Maud wrinkled her nose at that word work. Then she rallied. After all, even if she had to empty chamber pots, or peel potatoes, there would be fewer chamber pots and fewer potatoes than were required for sixty-three little girls. Ill help you, she promised. At the Asylum . . . well, sometimes I didnt do exactly what I was supposed to, but that was because Miss Kitteridge was so mean. Hyacinth seemed to follow her thoughts. I dont mean that kind of work. You wont have many chores to do, because we have a hired girl. Our work is different. It isnt hard, but its secret. And - just at first - you, too, must be a secret. Youre going to be our secret child. Mauds forehead puckered with bewilderment. Our secret child, repeated Hyacinth. Doesnt it sound nice? During the first few weeks of being our little girl, no ones going to know about you. You wont go to school. You wont lack for exercise, because we have a lovely garden, with a high wall round it - but when callers come to the house, youll go upstairs, to the third floor and stay hidden. It will be like a game of hide-and-seek. Do you understand? Maud cast a sidelong glance at Judith, whose face was serious, almost grim. I understand the part about hiding, she ventured. I mean, I can stay ...
