Allusions to past works appear on It Matters (a throwback to Cautioners), You Are Free, and The End Is Beautiful, strumming at the same heartstrings of Bleed Americans more yearning moments. Elsewhere, Integrity Blues distinguishes itself with new adventures in experimentation. Pass the Baby is the albums standout centerpiece, a three-in-one journey through atmospheric textures, an expansive release, and an unexpectedly heavy coda that ends up sounding, surprisingly, like Tom Morello playing on Nine Inch Nails The Fragile. They havent gone this hard since Nothing Wrong or Get It Faster. Its one of their best songs to date and the clearest example of the bands creative revitalization. This collection of music is a labor of love: love of music, of fellow musicians and their gifts, and for the music enthusiast whom I hope will enjoy this album. About the Artist ROB WHITLOCK In basketball, Rob Whitlock would be known as “the sixth man,” the first player to come off the bench and the one expected to sink key baskets during crunch time. In baseball, he’d be “the utility player” who can play almost any position in the field day-after-day and can be counted on to connect when up at the plate. In the world of acting, Whitlock would be described as a “character actor,” someone who delivers a memorable and pivotal performance while occasionally stealing scenes from marquee stars. Now, through a two-part series of musical sketches that incorporate a variety of genres, the keyboardist-producer-composer proves that he is indeed ready for his close-up. And this time, the stellar cast is supporting him. With more than two decades in music, Whitlock is a “musician’s musician” who has performed and recorded with a diverse array of top artists in pop, R&B and jazz. He’s a much sought after Hammond B3 organist, who also plays piano and keyboards in addition to producing, writing and arranging. Over a two-year span, Whitlock was joined in recording studios all over the U.S. by just a few of his friends to work on an eclectic music project called Sketchin’. Along with Michael Brecker, Vinnie Colaiuta, Anthony Jackson, Scott Henderson, Othello Molineaux, Pat Kelley, and Cliff Almond, Whitlock recorded enough material to populate two albums. Sketchin’ was released nationally last fall on the artist’s own Sketchin’ Records label. Sketchin’ 2 is scheduled for release this spring. On the albums, the legendary saxophonist and eleven-time Grammy winner Brecker said, “It was a joy to be a part of the Rob Whitlock project. In addition to his being a fantastic player/composer, Rob has a knack for bringing out the best in the musicians with whom he plays. This was fun.” Born in West Virginia, Whitlock grew up in South Florida where he started playing the Hammond B3 at the age of eight. His father, Bob, was a respected local jazz guitarist who encouraged his son to perform whenever his professional musician friends were over at the family house. Through his father’s record collection, he was introduced to artists like Jimmy Smith, Wes Montgomery and Charlie Parker. On his own, he discovered the music of Herbie Hancock, George Duke, Chick Corea, Miles Davis and Jaco Pastorius. While he was a teenager, Whitlock learned how to make a living gigging on the Ft. Lauderdale/Miami scene by playing keyboards and bass. When he was 17, he met Pastorius, who used to spend time learning from Bob Whitlock. The circle of learning perpetuated itself as Pastorius went on to become one of Rob’s greatest musical influences. After living in Washington, DC for three years, Whitlock moved to San Diego when he was 25. He believes that having lived on both coasts has helped shape and lends texture to his music. Whitlock landed gigs touring with the Jazz Crusaders, A.J. Croce, the Dazz Band and Fattburger. Musicians - especially jazz musicians, whose craft is in many ways an improvised form of communication - understand this principle inherently, perhaps better than any politician or diplomat could ever hope to. Vibraphonist Stefon Harris, saxophonist David Sanchez and trumpeter Christian Scott cross that divide in their new recording, Ninety Miles. Recorded entirely in Havana, Cuba, with the help of some highly talented Cuban players - pianists Rember Duharte and Harold Lopez-Nussa, each leading their own quartets - the nine-song set is an experiment that examines the fascinating chemical reaction that takes place when musicians from different cultures come together and converse in a common language that transcends mere words. The set also includes a DVD that is a sneak peek of the forthcoming documentary of the same name that chronicles the recording process of the album in Cuba. It will also include two bonus live performances of City Sunrise and La Fiesta Va. This record is about the power of music to communicate, and break down some of the barriers that result from language and politics and culture, says John Burk, Chief Creative Officer of Concord Music Group and producer of the album. He developed the idea for the project after experiencing first-hand the visceral energy exchange between artists and audiences at the Cuban Jazz Festival in 2008. After more than a year of negotiations with representatives of the Cuban music industry - not to mention clearing the various travel-related hurdles with the U.S. State Department and the Cuban government - Burk, along with co-producer Chris Dunn, booked Harris, Sanchez and Scott to perform in Havana in May 2010 with many of the same Cuban players hed seen at the festival a couple years earlier. Ninety Miles is a snapshot of the rehearsals just prior to the 2010 performance. The brilliance and innovation of Ninety Miles is only part of the story. The recording is also a clear statement about the power of music to unite in ways that politics and diplomacy cant. The arts can lead the way, because they are the universal language, says Burk. And music is certainly one of the most powerful forces within the arts. You can change someones life in five minutes with the right piece of music. I dont know of any other art form that can do that. This record does illustrate a way - or at least the ability - for people to work together despite differences...
