The Picture of Dorian Gray is a novel by Oscar Wilde, first published complete in the July 1890 issue of Lippincotts Monthly Magazine. Fearing the story was indecent, the magazines editor had requested that Wilde reduce the length. However, Wilde also published it as a complete novel. The content, presentation and style of The Picture of Dorian Gray made it one of the most controversial works at the time of its release.
