CD Songs Of The Sacred Circle - Louie Gonnie
-Titulo Original : Audio CD - SONGS OF THE SACRED CIRCLE - Louie Gonnie-Fabricante : Canyon Records-Descripcion Original: Dine songwriter and singer, Louie Gonnie illuminates the harmony of the spirit in this collection of Peyote songs. Anchored by gourd drum and sustained by waves of his flowing vocals, Gonnie leads an inner voyage from dreams to actuality, from earth to sky and from the past to eternity. Review Dine artist Louie Gonnie has struck gold with his latest album Songs of the Sacred Circle: Harmony in Eight Parts, a collection of Peyote songs of the Native American Church recorded on Canyon Records.Accompanied by Branson Gorman (Dine), Gonnie presents a wonderful blend of original word and vocable songs with absolute precision and beauty in four-song sets. The harmony between Gonnie and Gorman fuses well and produces a very crisp, smooth sound that both energizes and relaxes you at the same time, as evidenced by track 2, which is my favorite track of the album.Gonnie was born on the Dine (Navajo) Nation and is a third generation singer. He has been singing since age 5 and has been composing his own songs for 12 years. He attributes a lot of his success to his grandfather, Haastiin Gonnie, a noted medicine man, who has been one of his greatest influences and says, The prayer is my canvas and the songs represent the colors that become my art.I believe that this album is art of the highest quality. It goes straight to your heart and infuses you with good feelings, inspiration, and feelings of love, harmony and peace. Gonnie says, Stick around; there are more projects on the horizon and in time they will be revealed. I will definitely stick around and anticipate the coming of his next albums and pieces of art. --By Sheena Anderson - The Cherokee One Feather Newspaper- Sept. 3, 2008 Louie Gonnie inspires on Songs of the Sacred CircleLouie Gonnie is a songwriter and visual artist of the Navajo people. The music on this recording arises from his experiences with the Native American Church, also known as the Peyote Church. The Worship services usually feature songs at four points in time; they may be familiar pieces or original compositions, such as Gonnie offers here. Eight of the 10 sets are presented as groups of four songs. The sets have titles such as, Twilight, Star People, and With the Flames, and the songs within them relate both to the title of the set and the placement of the songs in the service. The chants are anchored by gourd rattle and water drum and varied by the rhythms of these rattles and Gonnies singing, with additional drumming and singing from Branson Gorman. The two men make a powerful sound that stays within the structure theyve chosen, yet displays a lot of variation. The liner notes include an explanation about why Gonnie came to record these songs along with examples of his artwork, which complements his musical sensibilities well. --By KD - Dirty Linen / Dec.08 - Feb. 09Louie Gonnie (Dine/Navajo) was brought up with a reverence for the sacred music of the Native American church. Inspired by his medicine man grandfather and tribal elders, he learned the art of peyote singing at a young age and perfected his technique over the years. On SONGS OF THE SACRED CIRCLE, Gonnie provides a very respectful album of traditional ritual singing backed by the earthy thump of the gourd drum. One area where he takes a more modern approach to the material is in the area of production - the album uses multi-tracking and layering to add depth to Gonnies vocals and overdubbing to give a multiple singers effect. From beginning to end, SONGS OF THE SACRED CIRCLE does a wonderful job of capturing the spirituality and charisma of Native American peyote music. --By Dan Cowan - Music Design / InReview August/September 200... -

CD Play Waila - The American Indians
-Titulo Original : Audio CD - PLAY WAILA - The American Indians-Fabricante : Canyon Records-Descripcion Original: This collection brings together two classic recordings by The American Indians, one of the most innovative bands in the saga of waila, the lively social dance music of southern Arizonas Native peoples. Also known as chicken scratch waila features the intricately intertwined melodies of saxophone and accordion propelled by the rhythms of guitar, bass, and drums playing polkas, two-steps, and cumbias. While staying true to the traditions of waila, The American Indians played with a highly original flare making them legends of chicken scratch. Review Quick--name several traditional Native American instruments, Drums, flutes, rattles, gourds, even the voices of singers would probably appear on most peoples lists. Yet, The American Indians Play Waila, a recent release from Canyon Records, features saxophones, accordions, guitars in its renditions of the traditional Native music of the Southwest. Waila, a popular musical genre among the Native people of Southwest Arizona, reflects the Spanish influence on indigenous residents of the region. With its lively, energetic combination of high-volume sounds, waila inspires listeners to participate in social dances. Polka, Two-Step, and other styles of social dancing blend into fun, when played waila-style. Frequently referred to as Chicken Scratch, waila crosses genres and generation. As a result, waila has gathered fans from a wide variety of age groups, tribal affiliations and dance styles. This cd celebrates the many facets of waila. The American Indians Play Waila shares the talents of these Tohono Oodham (Papago) musicians. The band plays and composes waila tunes, which demonstrate the artists passion for this music. Standout songs include, Come Home Tonight, Song from Way Back and Old-Timer Two-Step. Dancers will enjoy the variety of two-steps and polkas. These include Arrowhead Two-Step, Desert Polkas, and White Dove Polka. The American Indians Play Waila provides more than an hour of upbeat musical fun, that can be enjoyed by anyone who likes to dance. --By Dawn Karima Pettigrew - Whispering Wind / Issue #257 / Vol 37 #1The social dance music of the Tohono Oodham reservation in western Arizona - Waila, or Chicken Scratch - owes more to the polkas, schottisches, and mazurkas of Europe and the Norteno music of Mexico, with whom the reservation shares a 60-mile boundary, than to the sounds of Native America. Recorded in the 1970s The American Indians Play Waila, and Waila, featuring tunes by El Conjunto Murrietta, Mike Ennis and Company, Los Papagos Molinas, and Elvin Kelly y Los Reyes, provide an introduction to this accordion-dominated Lawrence Welk-meets-Flaco Jimenez sound. --By CHa - Dirty Linen-Folk & World Music / November 2006We werent hip to it at the time, but was Ry Cooder aware of chicken scratch when he named his Chicken Skin band? I wonder. Two great albums recorded by the American Indians group in 1974 and 1976, and reissued here on a single CD as The American Indians Play Waila date from around the same period as Cooders band. Canyon only recorded their first waila/ chicken scratch album in 1972 although this Tohono Oodham (Papago) social dance form from southern Arizona had been around since the late 19th century. The music has very strong links to the Spanish/ German sounds of border music and Tex-Mex. Originally the bands consisted of fiddles and stringed instruments, but accordeons were soon adopted and by the 1950s, bands were adding saxophone as a lead as well. This is rocking, driving instrumental dance music from a basic line-up of accordeon, sax, electric guitar and bass, and two drummers. The band had an innovation of putting a wah-wah pedal on the accordeon (check tunes like Cry Babe) and the two drummers specialised in different rhythms (chotis and polkas). But this wasnt the Greatful Dead - this was dance music! (But it does have good sleevenotes.) --By Phil Wilson - fRoots - Local Music From Out There / A... -

He specializes in pre-Colombian instruments, including Aztec and Mayan flutes. Their cultures and instruments are close relatives and the two find a common ground in slow and midtempo acoustic trance grooves ornamented by an array of little percussion instruments, including rattles, rainsticks, rasps, and drums. These form the atmospheres for their simple flute melodies and chants. Extreme stereo panning amplifies rhythmic counterpoints over the native one beat, especially in the cross rhythms of Procession of the Jaguar King. --John Diliberto For the first time Crossroads melds the music of the native people of the Great Plains and Mexico. CD Emergence - R. Carlos Nakai
-Titulo Original : Audio CD - EMERGENCE - R. Carlos Nakai-Fabricante : Canyon Records-Descripcion Original: Emergence is one of R. Carlos Nakais most emotive CDs, exploring traditional melodies and prayers of Northern and Central Plains Native Americans while waxing improv on everything from desert winds to willow trees and red-tailed hawks. The result is a sweet, expressive, and grounding music dedicated to the songs and stories of Nakais tribal ancestors. This longtime master owns a natural gift for singing with the cedar flute, and this becomes delightfully apparent after hearing the fresh and light Whirlwinds Dancing and Coyote Rainbows. Nakai devotes the last third of the album to South American Dine creation and emergence stories and his original, Willow People--with its echoing notes and touch of ambient synthesizer--begins to sing with cosmic tones, reflecting the landscape of the Din&ecute; songs. What follows are four lovely pieces of expansive Native American music, some of which include Nakais deep, godly voice floating over a timeless universe, before ending on a quiet, melancholy rendition of Amazing Grace. With each song, Emergence emerges into a masterpiece. --Karen Karleski The best representation of R. Carlos Nakais concert performance for the solo cedar flute beginning with renditions of traditional melodies from the Plains and Nakais own works in the traditional style. CD Earth Spirit - R. Carlos Nakai
-Titulo Original : Audio CD - EARTH SPIRIT - R. Carlos Nakai-Fabricante : Canyon Records-Descripcion Original: This collection of solo flute pieces from Navajo-Ute musician R. Carlos Nakai is an evocative delight. The album consists of mostly original material, from the composition Canyon Reverie, to the improvisational In Media Res, to Athabascan Song, an arrangement of a traditional song. The latter in particular stands out, with a faster rhythm and more lilting melody than most of the other pieces. Theres also Ancient Dreams, performed on a bone whistle; the instrument almost exceeds the upper range of human hearing, and Nakai occasionally sounds like hes imitating birdcalls. A classically trained musician, Nakai blends musical traditions to create a whole that reminds one, on occasion, of Japanese shakuhachi music. --Genevieve Williams This album best captures the timeless serenity of the solo Native American flute. CD Pathfinder - Will Clipman
-Titulo Original : Audio CD - PATHFINDER - Will Clipman-Fabricante : Canyon Records-Descripcion Original: Five-time Grammy nominee Will Clipman blends exotic wind instruments, melodic percussion, and vocal chants with a pan-global palette of drums in thirteen musical tales told in the universal language of rhythm. Review Will Clipman is clearly fluent in the language of rhythm and percussion. Pathfinders 13 original compositions are a testimony to just how fluent he is. His four Grammy nominations for work in New Age and Native American music are a pretty good testimony, as well. Clipmans musical collages are layered with the sounds of instruments most of us have never heard or heard of, yet they seem as natural as a walk in the desert and as sacred as a hymn. This music may be called New Age, but it feels very old. Using the ocean drum, slit drum, water drum, djembe, spring drum, frame drum, Taos drum, gong, bellstick, berimbau, anklung, caxixis, ipu, bowl, cymbals, whistle, rainstick, songba, Cameroon bell, doumbek, claves, corn goddess whistle, balafon, catalpapod, bowed bowl, udu, triangle, tambourine, three-chambered ocarina, agogo, tingsha and his voice, Clipman takes us from Daybreak, through the Bodhisattva, Desert Rains, and beyond. It is quite a journey into the mystical sounds of percussion. Better to be listened to with the body than the mind. --By Heidi Fosner - Victory Music / May 2008Solo percussion CDs are unusual by definition, and especially when done by Native American drummer Will Clipman.Clipman does vocal chants and plays percussion that includes hand drums, bowls, chimes, djembe, water drums, cymbals, rainstick, gongs and many things you have probably never heard of (for example, caxixis, udu and corn goddess whistle). This is a meditative CD, something you would most likely play for a quiet time of reflection. There are six to 12 instruments on each composition and they are different for each of the 13 tracks, so there is a greater variety than you might think. All the tunes are quiet. Clipman is part Cherokee, so it is no surprise that much of his music has a Native American influence. Other tunes, like Reflecting Pool, sound Oriental. And this one could be called a tune, since Clipman includes chimes and other percussion that play musical notes. The instruments from many different cultures makes the music seem mysterious and exotic at many points. If you are interested in exploring something different, this CD is a Pathfinders. --By Dave Howell - Rambles website / Aug. 9, 2008Reminiscent of Mickey Harts Planet Drum and At The Edge, Will Clipmans Pathfinder is a marvelous mix of melodic percussion. The four-time Grammy-nominated artist combines an amazing array of instruments with vocal chants and wind instruments and the result is simply stupendous. Utilizing the universal language of rhythm, Clipmans percussive explorations are clever confections of polyrhythmic proportions. The exotic blend of instruments (everything from slit drums and gongs to rainsticks and hangs) with imaginative melodies makes for one extraordinary listening experience. Whether its the opening strains of Daybreak, the wonderful rhythms and chants of Ibo Oye, or the infinitely entertaining title cut Pathfinder, Clipmans compositions are full of magic and mirth. An excellent excursion into the multifaceted world of percussion, Will Clipmans Pathfinder is outstanding --By Gene M.
