In 1966 he was arrested in the United States on a marijuana-related charge and in exchange for not being deported, Yanovsky disclosed his dealers name. He was as a consequence ostracised by the music community and, after returning to Canada, recorded Alive and Well as a solo album for Buddah Records in 1968. He later retired from the music industry and became a restaurateur. He was inducted into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame in 1996 and died in December 2002...

Their album on EMI still sounds playful and timeless, as if Blossom Dearie had recorded with Steely Dan. a series of projects followed: an album of standards, MIDDLEHOPE; a lovely album of her own songs, PEOPLE BEHAVE LIKE BALLADS; a collaborations with legendary drummer Paul Motion, that lead to a fine CD, ON BROADWAY 4 or THE PARADOX OF CONTINUITY. THE GROWING SEASON is an album of songs about motherhood, about living in the world and living in your body. There is an effortlessness about it, buoyed by the lighter-than-air rhythms of drummer Brian Blade, the supple rightness of Larry Grenadiers beautiful emphatic bass, the otherworldly chordings of guitarist Kurt Rosenwinkel, all anchored by Rebeccas elegant songs, lovely, picked guitar and smoky, generous voice. Its a voice that seems to leave nothing out: sex and death and breakfast and wind in the trees and tax forms and laughter and night. All at once. Review Rebecca Martin has a warm unguarded voice, an instrument of modesty and forbearance. Her interior style can feel almost too spare for standards, though she has recorded good albums full of them, most recently with tthe jazz drummer Paul Motian. With her own songs, she manifests a deeper more easeful authority. She can make the same phrase seem philosophical and coversational, and about as natural as sighing.The Growing Season, Ms. Martins first solo effort since 2004, consists entirely of her songs. The album was partly inspired by motherhood, with all that it entails: physical changes, heightened responsibilities, state-of-the-world ruminations. She croons about home on the aptly titled Lullaby. But on another song she sings: What feels like home/Is a hole to sink down into. This is meant to feel reassuring, as are several other lyrics that urge resignation on the subject of death. Ms. Martin accompanies herself capably on acoustic guitar, but she also enlists top-flight musicians here, including her husband, the bassist Larry Grenadier; the guitarist Kurt Rosenwinkel, who doubles on keyboards; and the drummer Brian Blade, whose playing is unfailingly subtle. (The same ensemble will appear with her Tuesday through Sunday at the Village Vanguard.)As the albums producer, Mr. Rosenwinkel merits special recognition: the sound he has created, all softness and luminosity, complements the songs beautifully. But its Ms. Martin who opens herself up here, and who deserves the credit. Saxophonist JD Allen has done his best to bridge the gap between the two on his new recording Shine! He has done so by taking his crack trio, featuring bassist Gregg August and drummer Rudy Royston, through the paces on not only his well-constructed compositions but also through more open improvisatory passages. Allen s penchant for melody comes through in his compositions and improvisations no matter how far off the beaten path. The trio navigates the music with aplomb and makes Shine! a fantastic addition to JD Allen s growing discography. Review Tenor saxophonist J.D. Allen seems like a man out of time. His sensibility is right out of the heyday of 50s and 60s bop. His confident, intense style, and his trio with bassist Gregg August and drummer Rudy Royston will - and - should inspire comparisons to Sonny Rollins groups. Yet despite all this, Allens approach feels thoroughly modern and fresh. Why? Well, because no one else is doing this today. Above all else, Allen economizes. The songs on Shine!, his trios second album for Sunnyside, run two to five minutes. Every bar is precious; every note counts. The 36-year-old plays with the adventure-some spirit of a free-jazzer but the melodic and rhythmic grounding of a bebopper. On tunes like the openers Esre! and Sonhouse, vigorous workouts that segue into each other, the trios elastic nature evinces itself. Tunes are built on simple melodic underpinnings, but the music is anything but simple. For one thing, no one keeps the time - August and Royston are improvising as much as Allen. In fact, the drummer may be improvising most of all, because we rarely hear the actual rhythm; instead, we feel it below the surface, as each member of the trio surely does. They do this to varying degrees; Roystons drums swing gently , while August patiently builds a bass solo. Saxophonist Michael Lewis and bassist Erik Fratzke also contribute tunes to the album. Together, the group has come up with 11 tracks that give Lewis a chance to unleash what seems like an unending stream of melodic ideas on his tenor (and alto and soprano on one song each), with the rhythm section setting a backdrop or pushing him as required.Kings love of jerky rhythms drives the climax of Rise! Mark Anthony, on which a repetitive motif builds out of a free drum/sax exchange, much like a Tim Berne piece. He doesnt sound as unhinged as he occasionally gets with the Bad Plus, but there are plenty of moments where he dances around the time. Fratzke often stays in the background, gently stroking simple grooves, but when duty calls he can rip into a fast solo (1996 A.D.) or change textures from medium to heavy. Lewis who also adds keyboards to a couple of tracks, has a playful approach to his horn, somewhat reminscent of Ornette, that makes even the simplest melody engaging.- Mike Shanley --JazzTimes - Nov. 2007Essentially a simple sax-led trio, what distinguishes Happy Apple Back on Top, and makes it so compelling, is the surprising coherence of the trio, strong arrangements, and solid playing of all three players. Erik Fratzke grounds the trio on electric bass, laying down rock-solid undercurrents that add considerable presence. Fratzke plays hard and forcefully, often opening up and setting the pace before the sax and drums enter. Dave King, who wrote most of the pieces, rocks on drums, his presence sometimes less noticeable, but he hits hard with a solid consistent beat that takes a back seat to nobody. Michael Lewis is splendidly fast and fluid on tenor sax, his primary instrument, as he shows to great effect on 1996 a.d., which is the year the Minneapolis-based group was formed. Technically proficient, Lewis is comfortable with a range of tempos and volumes, and some of his best work comes when he is soloing fast and soft, as on Rise! Marc Anthony. Happy Apple has released at least a half-dozen more recordings, and this one is polished and sophisticated, sure to satisfy fans of the trio and attract new admirers. The band forges a unique sound and concept, something that is increasingly more difficult in a world in which the competition is fierce. Lewis solos might be described as controlled free sax, relying on repetition of melodic fragments. The music never disappoints, the simple weird melodies, such as the outlandishly repetitive one on Rise! Marc Anthony, distinguishing it from the pack. Lefse Los Cubanos impresses with the soaring sax and syncopated melody, though Fratzkes bass solo is less compelling, or at least a bit muddied in the mix. Lewis is stunning on soprano sax on Brown Lights, where he is in total mastery of the horn, even at lightning speeds. These fellows have clearly thought carefully about what they are doing, and fit together hand-in-glove. There is not a sub-par track on the recording, and in many cases, the trio produces some stunning results. It deserves a wide audience, and is definitely a contender for one of the best albums of 2007.- Steven Loewy --Cadence - Jan/Feb/Mar 2008David King, the drummer of the trio Happy Apple, is a heavy-gauge clown, honest, graceful and intuitive. He looks as if hes constantly subverting his own nature around the drums.
