Here is the classic Boynton counting story in a sturdy, board book version. Perfect for travel time, bedtime, or PARTY TIME! Review How dull, to be one hippo all alone... until the one calls two other hippos on the phone. Soon three more hippos are at the door, bringing along another four. Before the night is through, a houseful of hippos (and one beast) has joined the one hippo for a boisterous bash. All through the hippo night, Hippos play with great delight. But at the hippo break of day, The hippos all must go away. In clusters of nine, eight, seven, six, and so on, the hippos depart, finally leaving the one hippo alone once more, [missing] the other forty-four. The well-loved Sandra Boynton wrote this tribute to silliness in 1977, inspiring generations of the very young to learn to count. Lively, cute new illustrations complement this edition, with big numbers (one through nine, and nine through one) boldly placed on the corner of each page. The sturdy board book will withstand lots of eager counting fingers, and maybe even a berserk hippo or two. Boyntons familiar style can be seen in scads of other delightfully nonsensical titles, including Barnyard Dance! and Moo, Baa, La La La!. Book : Alices Adventures In Wonderland A Pop-up Adaptation -
-Titulo Original : Alices Adventures In Wonderland A Pop-up Adaptation-Fabricante : Little Simon-Descripcion Original: Alices Adventures in Wonderland is Robert Sabudas most amazing creation yet, featuring stunning pop-ups illustrated in John Tenniels classic style. Faithful to Lewis Carrolls original text, this incredible novelty book features special effects like a Victorian peep show, multifaceted foil, tactile elements, and more! This pop-up is sure to become an instant favorite-one that readers will return to admire again and again. From School Library Journal Kindergarten-Grade 6-Sabuda brings Alices world to life with breathtaking, three-dimensional images that are incredibly imaginative, intricately detailed, and perfectly executed. Carrolls text has been significantly abridged, and although some scenes are a bit choppy, the quickly paced narrative retains the flavor of the original. Sabudas illustrations pay homage to John Tenniels artwork, while providing a fresh look at the story and offering details that add greatly to the reading experience. The events unfold in six glorious spreads, each featuring a large pop-up and a narrow booklet that opens into several pages containing the text as well as additional pop-ups. The first scene depicts Alice and her sister on the riverbank, and the faces of several Wonderland characters are camouflaged among the background trees. A pull-up panel provides a Victorian peep show view of Alice falling down the rabbit hole. Throughout, shiny foils highlight items such as pots and pans, and felt adds textured detail to the Cheshire Cat and other fuzzy animals. A movable inset transforms the face of the Duchesss offspring from a babys to a pigs. As a page is turned, a gardener raises his paintbrush and a piece of cellophane changes a white rose to red. In the final spread, a frightened Alice waves her arms beneath a delicate arch of cards. In addition to pulling off feats of paper engineering, the artist also manages to create compositions that provide an eye-pleasing balance of colors, shapes, and action. Much too delicate to circulate, libraries may still want to purchase this book for displays and just for showing off.Joy Fleishhacker, School Library JournalCopyright 2003 Reed Business Information, Inc. From Booklist *Starred Review* Reviewed with J. Otto Seibolds Alice in Pop-Up Wonderland. What is it about Alice? This season two well-known childrens book creators have tackled the challenge of shoehorning Alices Adventures in Wonderland into pop-up books only six spreads long. Larded with dioramas, flaps, and other displays of paste-and-paper bravura, both versions are likely to create buzz among Alice collectors and aficionados of movable books. But the two renditions of the same story could hardly be more different.Seibolds super dimensional Alice, which he both designed and illustrated, plunges children into a psychedelic universe straight out of the Jefferson Airplanes White Rabbit. It features Carrolls original text in brief, cherry-picked excerpts, so the finished product is more a series of interpretive highlights than a thorough presentation of the story, and the rococo, tough-to-decipher typeface adds to the impression that the book is meant to be viewed, not read. Seibolds trademark palette of beiges and pea greens, and a slightly grotesque Alice with Ronald McDonald clown feet, seem to dare readers to prefer Disneys prettiness or Tenniels Victorian placidity. The pops conceived by Seibold and paper engineer James R. Diaz are a lot of fun. Each spread contains a dizzying array of devices and effects, including a particularly clever rendering of the vanishing Cheshire cat. In the end, however, all of this somehow seems less the point than the books air of hipster irony. The version by Sabuda, creator of a previous pop-up adaptation of a classic, The Wonderful Wizard of Oz (2000), cleaves more closely to the original; its full-color artwork is in John Tenniels classic style, and the abridged text, cleverly tucked into ... -

Book : Baby Loves Winter! A Karen Katz Lift-the-flap Book...
-Titulo Original : Baby Loves Winter! A Karen Katz Lift-the-flap Book (karen Katz Lift-the-flap Books)-Fabricante : Little Simon-Descripcion Original: Baby explores the wonders of winter in this seasonal lift-the-flap board book from Karen Katz! It’s wintertime! What will Baby see? What’s outside the window? Look! Giant snowflakes! Little ones will love lifting the flaps in this book to reveal a red sled, a giant snowplow, a cute furry groundhog, and everything else that Baby loves about winter! The sturdy format and easy-to-lift flaps are perfect for parents and children to share. From Booklist If you’ve got a tyke hesitant about a cold front, jam this encouraging board book into their mittened hands. A rotund toddler is asked a series of questions: “What’s outside the window?” Lifting a flap reveals the answer: “Look! Giant snowflakes!” Ditto as a pile of snowballs reveals a sled, a hill reveals a groundhog, a fence reveals a snowplow, a snowman reveals a deer, and a tree reveals a mommy. Obviously, the flaps are not as thick as the pages, and in fact, their slickness makes them a bit difficult to turn. Nonetheless, this is giddy wintertime goodness that-whew!-resists opening the whole Christmas can of worms.
