Book : She Is Not Invisible - Sedgwick, Marcus

-Titulo Original : She Is Not Invisible-Fabricante : Square Fish-Descripcion Original: Three-time Printz Award honoree Marcus Sedgwicks She Is Not Invisible is an intricate puzzle of a novel that sheds a light on the delicate ties that bind people to each other.Laureth Peaks father has taught her to look for recurring events, patterns, and numbers a skill at which shes remarkably talented. Her secret: She is blind. But when her father goes missing, Laureth and her seven-year-old brother, Benjamin, are thrust into a mystery that takes them to New York City, where surviving will take all her skill at spotting the amazing, shocking, and sometimes dangerous connections in a world full of darkness. This title has Common Core connections.Praise for She Is Not Invisible:“Laureth is sixteen, smart, self-doubting, and blind. She is also desperate to find her missing famous author father . . . Readers will applaud Laureths believable evolution into a more confident - and definitely more visible - young woman.” The Horn Book“This novel will have readers feeling a creepy sensation on the backs of their necks long after the last page.” School Library Journal“Sedgwick takes the somewhat shopworn theme of siblings on a parent hunt to a fascinating new level.” Bulletin of the Center for Childrens Books“In a race against time, Laurel and Ben must investigate what happened to her father using the meager clues they have available . . . Recommend this book to mystery lovers and especially to those who enjoyed Girl, Stolen.” VOYA“A thriller that challenges readers understanding of the universe . . . Its no coincidence that Sedgwick has crafted yet another gripping tale of wonder.” Kirkus Reviews, starred review“This fast-paced thriller delivers a compelling mystery, thought-provoking questions about existence, and brilliantly lifelike characters.” Booklist, starred review“Printz-winner Sedgwick (Midwinterblood) again demonstrates his remarkable versatility, trading the generations-spanning horrors of his recent books for an equally tense contemporary story about coincidence, obsession, and the ways in which we see the world.” Publishers Weekly, starred review“What this book proves, is that Marcus is not only one of the greatest British YA writers, but one of the most versatile too. Unlike anything he has written before and a book that will reach a whole new audience. Bloomin loved it.” Phil Earle, author of Heroic, Being Billy and Saving Daisy“Marcus Sedgwick doesnt speak down to his teen readers. He tells it how it is, without footnotes or gloss, and its up to the reader to decide how much they want to take from his books. A rollicking good adventure? No problem - thats there and easily available. Just let your eyes slide across the bits in italics and jump to the next event. It would be a shame to do that, though, because for those prepared to deal with it, theres much, much more in this book: theories and philosophies and ideas which stretch the reader and give the adventure far greater depth and resonance.” The Bookbag“Sedgwicks prose is as crisp and clear as always, without losing a single fathom of emotional depth, and Laureth and Benjamin will resonate soundly with anyone who has ever negotiated the ups and downs of sibling relationships.” Rebecca Davies, The Independent: Childrens Book Blog“Marcus Sedgwick has written a story which really makes you think. He has referred to it as an iceberg and certainly the story can be read on two levels; on the surface a simple story of a girl, Laureth, accompanied by her young brother, Ben and his beloved soft toy, Stan, determined to find their missing father, in spite of Laureths personal circumstances making this no easy task and, below the surface, a much more complicated story, concerning the nature of obsession and coincidence; all of which leaves you pondering and re-reading. . . . Totally absorbing.” Gill Perry, Waterstones Novels by Marcus Sedgwick:Saint Death: A propulsive, compelling, and unsparing novel set in the grimly...

It was in the same spot on his right side, a slippery marble. He’d jumped out of bed and hurried into his clothes, covering it up.His mom had been standing at the little kitchen sink sipping her coffee. There were purple shadows under her eyes. “Sleep all right, honey?”“Sure.”She looked out the window. “It’s going to be hot today. Did you pack your trunks?”“My trunks?” Was he hearing right? The lake was off-limits, wasn’t it?“I thought you could help me for a while in the garden,” she said. “Then we could... Oh, I don’t know...” Her smile was lopsided, as if she was out of practice. “Run through the sprinkler to cool off! Or are you too old for that?”“I’m eleven, Mom,” he said. “Jeez!” Run through the sprinkler? Was she nuts? And anyway, he did have his trunks. He just couldn’t wear them. Or she would see. Her eagle eyes would go straight to the marble and he would be back at Children’s Hospital in no time flat. She would call an ambulance. Or get a helicopter. Only he wasn’t going to do all that again. He wasn’t going to puke up his guts over and over while his mother held his head. He wasn’t going to miss school and lose what few friends he had left. He wasn’t going to make new friends with kids who disappeared. It would be the biggest lie he’d ever told, and he would tell it over and over again whenever she asked him how he was, no matter how bad it made him feel.“Fine,” he’d tell her. “I’m fine....

Review “This well-told tale--about a Jewish immigrant family in New York in the early 1900s--is fascinating and full of suspense.” The Washington Post“Alternating with this story line is a parallel narrative devoted to abandoned children who forge a life for themselves under the shelter of the Brooklyn Bridge. Readers will have a hard time putting down this compelling story.” School Library Journal“The narrative includes tightly interwoven elements of multiple genres--adventure, romance, comedy, ghost story, and family drama--without ever compromising the authenticity of the plot or the characters.” The Horn Book“Rooted in the Jewish immigrant experience in early-twentieth-century New York City, this story weaves together one boys immediate personal narrative with a communitys historical struggles. . . . . the plot reveals intricate connections, up to the very last chapter, that will make readers return to the beginning of this gripping story and see everything in a new way.” Booklist“Its such a relief to be able to count on an author time and time again.” School Library Journal“In this tale of Dickensian contrasts in kindness and cruelty, Brooklyn comes alive with the details of time and place, but it is the shadow of pain and transcendence cast symbolically by the bridge that haunts and compels. Another work of enduring excellence from Hesse.” Kirkus Reviews, Starred Review“This intimate novel, written in stanza form, poetically conveys the heat, dust and wind of Oklahoma. With each meticulously arranged entry Hesse paints a vivid picture of her heroines emotions.” Publishers Weekly, Starred Review for Out of the Dust“What Copeland created with music, and Hopper created with paint, Hesse deftly and unerringly creates with words: the iconography of Americana, carefully researched, beautifully written, and profoundly honest.” Kirkus Reviews, Starred Review for Witness“Deep, literary, and soulful, Ms. Hesse once again holds us in her spell as she reconstructs the past at an intense time in United States history. . . .
