Book : Community The Structure Of Belonging - Block, Peter
-Titulo Original : Community The Structure Of Belonging-Fabricante : Berrett-Koehler Publishers-Descripcion Original: The expanded and revised edition of Community tackles the hysteric rise of isolation and fear in a digitally interconnected world. As a response to the increasing violence in our culture, the widening ideological divides, and the growing gap in economic well-being, there is greater awareness that a deeper sense of community is desperately needed. But even as we acknowledge the need to build community, the dominant on-the-ground practices about how to engage people, civically and organizationally, remain essentially unchanged. We still believe community is built with better messaging, more persuasion, and social events for people to get to know each other better. All of which is naive. In this new edition, Block draws on a decade of putting these ideas into practice to emphasize what has worked and extract those thoughts that were nice but had no durability. He explores how technology, instead of bringing us together, has driven us into more isolation. New examples show that community building can be a more powerful way to address social problems than more traditional policies and programs. And encouragingly, Block insists this is really simple, once we decide it is essential. He offers a way of thinking that creates an opening for authentic communities to exist and details what each of us can do to make that happen. Review “This book challenges the conventional wisdom about what you and I can do as citizens to shape our future. It offers concrete examples of what citizens can do and have done by drawing on resources in their families and communities.” -David Mathews, President, Kettering Foundation “This book is the basis for health and happiness in any society. A must-read.” -Quentin Young, Chairman, Health and Medicine Policy Research Group, and former President, American Public Health Association “‘What we need is here.’ That line from a Wendell Berry poem sums up the theme that runs through this vital and timely book. This book is a treasure. And it can help us recover the treasures hidden in plain sight within and among us, renewing ourselves and our democracy as we go.” -Parker J. Palmer, founder of the Center for Courage and Renewal and author of A Hidden Wholeness, Let Your Life Speak, and The Courage to Teach “Don’t wait for a politician, scientist, infomercial, or lottery ticket to come to the rescue. Read this powerful book and help yourself, your neighbors, and your planet to satisfying and sustainable solutions found only in community.” -Jim Diers, former Director, Seattle Department of Neighborhoods, and author of Neighbor Power About the Author Peter Block is an author, consultant, and thought-leader whose work focuses on the topics of empowerment, stewardship, chosen accountability, and the reconciliation of community. Peter is the author of several bestselling books, including Flawless Consulting, Stewardship, and The Empowered Manager. He is the recipient of the Organization Development Networks 2008 Lifetime Achievement Award. In 2004 he received their first place Members Choice Award, which recognized Flawless Consulting as the most influential book for OD practitioners over the past 40 years. The Fragmented Community and Its Transformation The essential challenge is to transform the isolation and self-interest within our communities into connectedness and caring for the whole. The key is to identify how this transformation occurs. We begin by shifting our attention from the problems of community to the possibility of community. We also need to acknowledge that our wisdom about individual transformation is not enoug... -

In a world where the talent pool is becoming increasingly diverse, its more important than ever for leaders to truly understand how to support inclusion.Drawing on years of work with many leading organizations, Jennifer Brown shows what leaders at any level can do to spark real change. She guides readers through the Inclusive Leader Continuum, a set of four developmental stages: unaware, aware, active, and advocate. Brown describes the hallmarks of each stage, the behaviors and mind-sets that inform it, and what readers can do to keep progressing. Review “Despite good intentions and an understanding that employee diversity strengthens teams and contributes to the bottom line, many leaders struggle with how to actualize an inclusive workforce. In How to Be an Inclusive Leader, expert Jennifer Brown guides leaders from being unaware to being an advocate for all employees. Her advice is invaluable for the leaders of today and tomorrow.” -Jan Jones Blackhurst, Executive Vice President, Public Policy and Corporate Responsibility, Caesars Entertainment “So many of us want to be even more inclusive as leaders, but for a number of reasons we aren’t always sure how. The reality is that we can all do more to make our teams and workplaces more inclusive, and this important book shows actual steps for making this happen.” -Mike Robbins, author of Bring Your Whole Self to Work “Finally, a book that acknowledges that allyship is a continuum and that all of us should up our advocacy constantly, like working a muscle. The situational examples allow us all to dress rehearse how we’ll meet these moments when they come up in real life. A must-read for anyone committed to a world where we all belong and contribute fully.” -Kat Gordon, founder and CEO, The 3% Movement “How to Be an Inclusive Leader is a fantastic read! Jennifer Brown is incredibly thought-provoking, especially around the concepts of fairness, equity, privilege, and what it means to be on the right side of social change. Book : Subtle Acts Of Exclusion How To Understand, Identify,
-Titulo Original : Subtle Acts Of Exclusion How To Understand, Identify, And Stop Microaggressions-Fabricante : Berrett-Koehler Publishers-Descripcion Original: The first practical handbook that helps individuals and organizations recognize and prevent microaggressions so that all employees can feel a sense of belonging. Our workplaces and society are growing more diverse, but are we supporting inclusive cultures? While overt racism, sexism, ableism, and other forms of discrimination are relatively easy to spot, we cannot neglect the subtler everyday actions that normalize exclusion. Many have heard the term microaggression, but not everyone fully understands what they are or how to recognize them and stop them from happening. Tiffany Jana and Michael Baran offer a clearer, more accessible term, subtle acts of exclusion, or SAEs, to emphasize the purpose and effects of these actions. After all, people generally arent trying to be aggressive--usually theyre trying to say something nice, learn more about a person, be funny, or build closeness. But whether in the form of exaggerated stereotypes, backhanded compliments, unfounded assumptions, or objectification, SAE are damaging to our coworkers, friends, and acquaintances. Jana and Baran give simple and clear tools to identify and address such acts, offering scripts and action plans for everybody involved. Knowing how to have these conversations in an open-minded, honest way will help us build trust and create stronger workplaces and healthier, happier people and communities. Review “This is an unreasonable manifesto. It’s unreasonable because it challenges us to take responsibility, to be kind, to dig in, and to change the invisible corners of our culture. We’ve got work to do. Unreasonable is precisely what we need.” -Seth Godin, author of This is Marketing “In my work, I have seen how Black people, especially young Black women, are frequently excluded by ‘well-intentioned’ people. Some of the exclusions are not subtle at all, but many of them are. The subtle ones are especially insidious and pervasive and hard to fight back against. This book skillfully uses stories and research to build a deep understanding that may actually be able to take something negative and turn it into an opportunity to productively come together and create more support, trust, and equity. Now that’s a feat! Jana and Baran have found a way to give shape and depth to a topic that is difficult to grasp and difficult to speak up about because of its subtlety. But more than that, they have provided a language that we can all use to actually have open and productive conversations about topics that have become incredibly divisive. I can see applications of this framework not just for work but for higher education and beyond.” -Aimee Meredith Cox, PhD, Director of Undergraduate Studies, Department of African American Studies, and Associate Professor, Departments of Anthropology and African American Studies, Yale University, and author of Shapeshifters “Tiffany Jana and Michael Baran have provided us a powerful tool to help us learn about how subtle forms of bias can profoundly impact people’s sense of belonging and their ability to perform at the highest level. Through thoughtful research and powerful examples, they have not only brilliantly articulated the problem but also offered us a pathway to a solution. Kudos!” -Howard Ross, author of ReInventing Diversity, Everyday Bias, and Our Search for Belonging “This book should open the floodgates for people to tell their own stories of being subtly excluded at work, with a new language that will make it so much easier to address out in the open and create teachable moments. As a little person, I have experienced so many subtle acts of exclusion over my career, whether it’s people telling me I look ‘cute’ or having to constantly fight for respect and validity. I wish every one of my colleagues over the years had been able to read this book!” -Becky Curran Kekula, Director, Disability Equality Index, Disability:IN About the Author Dr. Tiffany Jana is the CEO of TMI Portfoli... -

-Titulo Original : The Outward Mindset Seeing Beyond Ourselves-Fabricante : Berrett-Koehler Publishers-Descripcion Original: The new edition of an international bestseller helps individuals and organizations shift to a new mindset that will improve performance, spark collaboration, accelerate innovation, and make your life and the lives of everyone around you better. Without even being aware of it, many of us operate from an inward mindset, a single-minded focus on our own goals and objectives. This book points out the many ways, some quite subtle and deceptive, that this mindset invites tension and conflict. But incredible things happen when people switch to an outward mindset. They intuitively understand what coworkers, colleagues, family, and friends need to be successful and happy. Their organizations thrive, and astonishingly, by focusing on others they become happier and more successful themselves! This new mindset brings about deep and far-reaching changes. The Outward Mindset presents compelling true stories to illustrate the gaps that individuals and organizations typically experience between their actual inward mindsets and their needed outward mindsets. And it provides simple yet profound guidance and tools to help bridge this mindset gap. This new edition includes a new preface, updated case studies, and new material covering Arbinger’s latest research on mindsets. In the long run, changing negative behavior without changing one’s mindset doesn’t last-the old behaviors always reassert themselves. But changing the mindset that causes the behavior changes everything. Review “The secret to teamwork is an outward mindset. This is the definitive guide on how to achieve it.” -Steve Young, NFL MVP and Hall-of-Fame quarterback “This is a powerful book with a powerful message about really seeing. Introduction: Think Like a Top Salesperson This is a wonderful time to be alive and working in the profession of selling. Regardless of the ups and downs of the economy or temporary changes in your industry, there have never been more opportunities for you to achieve more of your goals-and enjoy a higher standard of living-than exist today by selling more of your products and services in the marketplace. And if anything, as you continually upgrade your skills, your situation is going to get better and better in the months and years ahead. The better you become at selling, the more opportunities will open up for you. According to Dr. Thomas Stanley, coauthor of The Millionaire Next Door, fully 5 percent of self-made millionaires in America are salespeople who have sold for another company all their lives. The way they became millionaires was quite straightforward. First, they became very good at selling. Second, they earned an excellent living as a result. And third, they saved and invested a substantial part of their incomes as they went along. So can you. My personal story in the field of selling is similar to that of many others. I started off with limited opportunities. My parents never had very much money. My father worked as a carpenter and my mother was a nurse, but they were not always regularly employed. I didn’t graduate from high school. In fact, I behaved so badly in high school that I was suspended and eventually expelled from three different schools. When I left high school, the only work I could get was laboring jobs. I washed dishes in the back of a small hotel, stacked lumber in a sawmill, dug wells, and worked as a construction laborer, carrying heavy materials from one place to another. I worked on farms and ranches and as a galley boy on a ship in the North Atlantic. Finally, when I couldn’t get a laboring job, I drifted into straight commission sales, selling office supplies from door to door. I wasn’t afraid to work, but hard work alone didn’t seem to be enough. I made hundreds of calls without making any sales. I used to run from office to office and from door to door so that I could see more people. But I was just barely hanging on by my fingernails. Then one day I began to ask, “Why is it that some salespeople are mor... -

This book offers a concise, accessible guide to the key concepts and applications in Otto Scharmer's classic Theory U. Scharmer argues that our capacity to pay attention coshapes the world. What prevents us from attending to situations more effectively is that we aren't fully aware of that interior condition from which our attention and actions originate. Scharmer calls this lack of awareness our blind spot. He illuminates the blind spot in leadership today and offers hands-on methods to help change makers overcome it through the process, principles, and practices of Theory U. And he outlines a framework for updating the "operating systems" of our educational institutions, our economies, and our democracies. -Titulo Original : The Ecology Of Law: Toward A Legal System In Tune With Nature And Community-Fabricante : Berrett-Koehler Publishers-Descripcion Original: WINNER OF THE 2015 IBPA BENJAMIN FRANKLIN AWARD IN POLITICS/CURRENT EVENTS Fritjof Capra and Ugo Mattei argue that at the root of many of the environmental, economic, and social crises we face today is a legal system based on an obsolete worldview. Capra, a bestselling author, physicist, and systems theorist, and Mattei, a distinguished legal scholar, explain how, by incorporating concepts from modern science, the law can become an integral part of bringing about a better world, rather than facilitating its destruction. This is the first book to trace the fascinating parallel history of law and science from antiquity to modern times, showing how the two disciplines have always influenced each other—until recently. In the past few decades, science has shifted from seeing the natural world as a kind of cosmic machine best understood by analyzing each cog and sprocket to a systems perspective that views the world as a vast network of fluid communities and studies their dynamic interactions. The concept of ecology exemplifies this approach. But law is stuck in the old mechanistic paradigm: the world is simply a collection of discrete parts, and ownership of these parts is an individual right, protected by the state. Capra and Mattei show that this has led to overconsumption, pollution, and a general disregard on the part of the powerful for the common good. Capra and Mattei outline the basic concepts and structures of a legal order consistent with the ecological principles that sustain life on this planet. This is a profound and visionary reconceptualization of the very foundations of the Western legal system, a kind of Copernican revolution in the law, with profound implications for the future of our planet...

Book : Hello, My Name Is Awesome How To Create Brand Names..
-Titulo Original : Hello, My Name Is Awesome How To Create Brand Names That Stick-Fabricante : Berrett-Koehler Publishers-Descripcion Original: Named a Top 10 Branding Book by Branding Journal, and a Top 10 Marketing Book by Inc. Magazine, this is the ultimate guide to naming your product or business. The completely revised second edition has been updated throughout with twice as many resources as before, new stories (of both hits and flops), and an entirely new chapter on the power of names in the workplace. Too many new companies and products have names that look like the results of a drunken Scrabble game (Xobni, Svbtle, Doostang). In this entertaining and engaging book, ace-naming consultant Alexandra Watkins explains how anyone--even noncreative types--can create memorable and effective brand names. No degree in linguistics required. The heart of the book is Watkinss proven SMILE and SCRATCH Test. A great name makes you SMILE because it is Suggestive--evokes something about your brand; is Memorable--makes an association with the familiar; uses Imagery--aids memory through evocative visuals; has Legs--lends itself to a theme for extended mileage; and is Emotional--moves people. A bad name, on the other hand, makes you SCRATCH your head because it is Spelling challenged--looks like a typo; is a Copycat--similar to competitors names; is Restrictive--limits future growth; is Annoying--seems forced and frustrates customers; is Tame--feels flat, merely descriptive, and uninspired; suffers from the Curse of Knowledge--speaks only to insiders; and is Hard to pronounce--confuses and distances customers. This 50 percent-new second edition has double the number of brainstorming tools and techniques, even more secrets and strategies to nab an available domain name, a brand-new chapter on how companies are using creative names around the office to add personality to everything from cafeterias to conference rooms, and much more. Book : Humble Consulting How To Provide Real Help Faster -..
-Titulo Original : Humble Consulting How To Provide Real Help Faster-Fabricante : Berrett-Koehler Publishers-Descripcion Original: Consulting in Complex and Changing Times Organizations face challenges today that are too messy and complicated for consultants to simply play doctor: run a few tests, offer a neat diagnosis of the “problem,” and recommend a solution. Edgar Schein argues that consultants have to jettison the old idea of professional distance and work with their clients in a more personal way, emphasizing authentic openness, curiosity, and humility. Schein draws deeply on his own decades of experience, offering over two dozen case studies that illuminate each stage of this humble consulting process. Just as he did with Process Consultation nearly fifty years ago, Schein has once again revolutionized the field, enabling consultants to be more genuinely helpful and vastly more effective. Review “Humble Consulting is a fine blend of poetic writing and practical methodology. It is an intimate conversation about how service, in this case consulting, works in the real world. All who want a deeper understanding of the way to create relationships that produce outcomes will value this book. To simply recommend it is an understatement.” -Peter Block, author of Flawless Consulting, The Answer to How Is Yes “What is the most powerful force in consulting’s relational success-where you and the client move beyond the transactional to the deeper transformational? I used to think it was what our amazing OD founders Ed Schein and Warren Bennis saw as the core value of Organization Development: what they called that special “spirit of inquiry.” Now I see that it’s something far more foundational. In a word, its “humility” and Ed Schein, with this book is modelling it for all of us in the way he, the master, is yet the student, disclosing his innermost doubts and mistakes, revealing his subtle insights and brilliant successes, and up-ending almost all of our assumptions of what really matters most. This is the first book I now recommend to consultants young and old: for without humility-a stance wide-open, a state-of “not knowing” and totally vulnerable and present-- you cannot do this work. The message: make humility your greatest strength, and never lose it.” - David L. Cooperrider, author of Appreciative Inquiry and Fairmount Minerals Professor of Social Entrepreneurship, Weatherhead School of Management, Case Western Reserve University “Ed Schein takes the principles of Humble Inquiry and beautifully extends them to the consulting process in this book. He humbly and generously gives us a window into his own life and consulting process by sharing real stories from his years of consulting, including his own inner thoughts and unexpressed feelings. Every consultant should read this for insights into how we should deal with our doubts, questions, and anxieties. This is another major contribution to our work and our field from Dr. Schein.” -Matt Minahan, Chair, Board of Trustees, OD Network In this book Ed Schein has looked back over his long and distinguished consulting experience and come up with an important book. Anyone who is called upon to give help or advice, be they boss, consultant, parent or friend, should start by reading this. I used it to hold up a mirror to my own experience of giving advice and resolved to modify my behavior in future, to be more humble, in the Schein way. -Charles Handy, author of The Age of Unreason “Chock-full of useful case examples, Humble Consulting is about establishing a relationship with the client that is collaborative, personal, and empathetic rather than prescriptive. Schein has once again contributed significantly and creatively to our field of organization change and development.” -W. Warner Burke, PhD, E. L. Thorndike Professor of Psychology and Education, Teachers College, Columbia University, and Editor, Journal of Applied Behavioral Science “Ed Schein’s books on consulting have always been the most professionally useful things I read. And this book could once aga... -

I felt a loud thud in my heart as I finally checked the Caucasian box. Latinos were not recognized as a group by the U.S. government until the 1980 Census. We all have a deep need to be accepted for who we are, but this is particularly so in communities of color, whose members have been relegated to a minority status and measured by a White ideal. As I filled out the form, I heard my grandmothers sweet voice, Aye mi jita, nunca olvides quien eres y de donde venistes (Oh, my dearest little daughter, never forget who you are and where you came from). This notion of remembering your roots and staying connected to your ancestry is of biblical import in Black, Latino, and Indian communities. Forgetting where you came from is known as selling out, becoming an Uncle Tom or an Oreo or a coconut (Black or Brown on the outside, but White on the inside). Staying connected to ones roots includes being in tune with the history and struggles of ones people. Communities of color relate to the past as the wisdom teacher, the source from which culture flows. Sankofa, the mythical bird who l... -

-Titulo Original : Leadership And The New Science Discovering Order In A Chaotic World-Fabricante : Berrett-Koehler Publishers-Descripcion Original: The new edition of the bestselling, acclaimed, and influential guide to applying the new science to organizations and management. In this new edition, Margaret Wheatley describes how the new science radically alters our understanding of the world and how it can teach us to live and work well together in these chaotic times. We live in a time of chaos, rich in potential for new possibilities. A new world is being born. We need new ideas, new ways of seeing, and new relationships to help us now. New science-the new discoveries in biology, chaos theory, and quantum physics that are changing our understanding of how the world works-offers this guidance. It describes a world where chaos is natural, where order exists for free. It displays the intricate webs of cooperation that connect us. It assures us that life seeks order, but uses messes to get there. This book will teach you how to move with greater certainty and easier grace into the new forms of organizations and communities that are taking shape. Youll learn that: * Relationships are what matters-even at the subatomic level * Life is a vast web of interconnections where cooperation and participation are required * Chaos and change are the only route to transformation In this expanded edition, Wheatley provides examples of how non-linear networks and self-organizing systems are flourishing in the modern world.
