Book : The Greatest Philosopher Who Ever Lived - Peter...
-Titulo Original : The Greatest Philosopher Who Ever Lived-Fabricante : Ignatius Press-Descripcion Original: In 2019, Peter Kreeft published Socrates Children, a four-volume series on the hundred greatest philosophers of all time, spanning from ancient Greece to contemporary Germany. But he made a terrible mistake: he somehow left out women, and with this, he overlooked the greatest mind of them all. He forgot her-a mysterious housewife from a desert village-because he had forgotten what philosophy means. Philosophy is not the cultivation of cleverness, Kreeft explains, or the sophistications of scholarship, or the analysis of analysis, or the refutation of refutations, or the deconstruction of deconstructions. No, philosophy is a romance, a love affair-the love of wisdom. This book is a one-of-a-kind study on Mary of Nazareth, the mother of Jesus. If Jesus Christ is wisdom incarnate, and if Mary loved Him more than anyone else ever did, then it holds that Mary is the greatest philosopher, the greatest wisdom-lover. With precision and humor, Kreeft not only unpacks the thought and spirit of Mary as we know her through Scripture and Church doctrine, but offers a heartfelt crash course in the basics of philosophy-methodology, epistemology, logic, metaphysics, cosmology, ethics, politics, aesthetics, and more-all through the lens of the Mother of God. Fans of Kreeft will find here another fine example of his characteristic freshness, creativity, depth, and readability. But above all, those who are curious about the mother of Jesus, whether they are new to Christian faith or simply hoping to discover it anew, will likely find themselves swept up in the tide of Marys wise love for God. About the Author Peter Kreeft, Ph.D., Professor of Philosophy at Boston College, is one of the most respected and prolific Christian authors of our time. His many bestselling books cover a vast array of topics in spirituality, theology, and philosophy. They include Wisdom from the Psalms, Practical Theology, Doors in the Walls of the World, How to Be Holy, Because God Is Real, You Can Understand the Bible, Angels and Demons, Heaven: The Hearts Deepest Longing, and Summa of the Summa... -

Book : The True Meaning Of Christmas The Birth Of Jesus And.
-Titulo Original : The True Meaning Of Christmas: The Birth Of Jesus And The Origins Of The Season-Fabricante : Ignatius Press-Descripcion Original: What does the Bible really say about the birth of Jesus? How did the celebration of Christmas become associated with things like Santa Claus and decorated trees? In The True Meaning of Christmas: The Birth of Jesus and the Origins of the Season, biblical scholar Michael Patrick Barber offers an inspiring look at the Bibles accounts of Jesus birth and the development of the Christmas season. Along the way, he answers numerous questions, including: How is the Christmas story related to ancient Jewish expectations? Why is Jesus said to be laid in a manger? Who are the Magi? What is the mysterious Christmas star? How did December 25th become the date of Christmas? How did Saint Nicholas become Santa Claus? As Dr. Barber will show, to find our way home at Christmas, we need to first return to Christmass home in the story of the Bible. Only by carefully reflecting on the stories of Jesus birth can we hope to celebrate Christmas in the way it is meant to be celebrated and discover the real joy it promises! Review In his brilliant and fascinating new book, Michael Barber uses the Bible, Jewish tradition, archaeology, and ancient history to shed fresh light on the true meaning and mystery of Christmas. If you’re looking for a wonderful Christmas gift for your loved ones (or yourself!), then look no further. --Brant Pitre, Distinguished Research Professor of Sacred Scripture, Augustine Institute Graduate School of Theology, Author of Jesus and the Jewish Roots of the Eucharist I love this book! It is a joy to read, packed as full as a Christmas stocking with solid facts and helpful insights on the Bible, the early Church Fathers, and why we celebrate the season the way we do today. --Leslie Baynes, Associate Professor of New Testament and Second Temple Judaism, Missouri State University As a self-described lover of and expert on Christmas, I thought that Dr. Barbers book would be a helpful review of all of the elements of the season that I am so fond of. I did not anticipate learning so much about Christmas...and I definitely did not imagine that my heart would be set on fire like it was by what I read in this book. Not only was my intellect and imagination formed by the content of Dr. Barbers book, but my love and longing for Jesus Christ was enkindled by his words. This is not merely my new favorite book by Michael Barber, it is my new favorite book on Christmas. --Fr. Mike Schmitz, Director of Youth and Young Adult Ministry for the Diocese of Duluth and Chaplain for the Newman Center at the University of Minnesota-Duluth About the Author Michael Patrick Barber is Professor of Sacred Scripture and Theology at the Augustine Institute Graduate School of Theology. Book : Charity In Truth Caritas In Veritate - Benedict XVI,.
-Titulo Original : Charity In Truth: Caritas In Veritate-Fabricante : Ignatius Press-Descripcion Original: Benedict XVI has something for everyone in Charity in Truth from praising profit to defending the environment, from calling for a role for government in the economy to insisting on the necessity of moral transformation and gratuitousness in economic life, from the issue of immigration to the importance of technology. However, he also insists on discernment and the purification of our ideas by faith and reason, in order to temper any immoderate and one-sided enthusiasms. Charity and Truth was expected to be and is the Popes encyclical on social justice. And indeed justice and rights find their proper place. But charity and truth are shown to be the fundamental principles. Charity is at the heart of the Churchs social doctrine, he writes. Without truth, without trust and love for what is true, there is no social conscience and responsibility, and social action ends up serving private interests and the logic of power. Benedict calls for integral human development, which promotes the good of every man and of the whole man, including the spiritual dimension, the perspective of eternal life. Without this, human progress in this world is denied breathing-space. Whats more, true development requires openness to life. If there is lack of respect for the right to life and a natural death, he writes, if human conception, gestation and birth are made artificial, if human embryos are sacrificed to research, the conscience of society ends up losing the concept of human ecology and, along with it, that of environmental ecology. It is contradictory to insist that future generations respect the natural environment when our educational system and laws do not help them to respect themselves. With respect to economics, the Pope insists every economic decision has a moral consequence. He avoids the extremes of an unbridled capitalism and socialism. Instead, he holds that the logic of the market and the logic of the State free economic exchange with political oversight and restraint are not enough to secure human flourishing. There must be a generosity and gratuitousness among citizens and nations that goes beyond economic and political systems. Charity is necessary for justice to be justice. Benedict also argues that technology must not be seen as automatically providing solutions to problems, without the need for morality. Nor must man seek to avoid responsibility for overcoming social problems by rejecting technological development as inevitably evil. Benedict insists that man must be humble yet confident that he can, through faith and reason, make true progress in human development. About the Author Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI (Joseph Ratzinger) is widely recognized as one of the most brilliant theologians and spiritual leaders of our age. As Pope he authored the best-selling Jesus of Nazareth; and prior to his pontificate, he wrote many influential books that continue to remain important for the contemporary Church, such as Introduction to Christianity and The Spirit of the Liturgy... -

Book : Subverted How I Helped The Sexual Revolution Hijack..
-Titulo Original : Subverted How I Helped The Sexual Revolution Hijack The Womens Movement-Fabricante : Ignatius Press-Descripcion Original: Contraception and abortion were not originally part of the 1960s women’s movement. How did the women’s movement, which fought for equal opportunity for women in education and the workplace, and the sexual revolution, which reduced women to ambitious sex objects, become so united? In Subverted, Sue Ellen Browder documents for the first time how it all happened, in her own life and in the life of an entire country. Trained at the University of Missouri School of Journalism to be an investigative journalist, Browder unwittingly betrayed her true calling and became a propagandist for sexual liberation. As a long-time freelance writer for Cosmopolitan magazine, she wrote pieces meant to soft-sell unmarried sex, contraception, and abortion as the single woman’s path to personal fulfillment. She did not realize until much later that propagandists higher and cleverer than herself were influencing her thinking and her personal choices as they subverted the women’s movement. The thirst for truth, integrity, and justice for women that led Browder into journalism in the first place eventually led her to find forgiveness and freedom in the place she least expected to find them. Her in-depth research, her probing analysis, and her honest self-reflection set the record straight and illumine a way forward for others who have suffered from the unholy alliance between the women’s movement and the sexual revolution. About the Author Sue Ellen Browder is a freelance writer who has appeared on Oprah, the Today Show, and hundreds of radio talk shows. Her work for Cosmopolitan, New Woman, Woman’s Day, and other magazines has given her a lifetime of experience with the women’s movement as it unfolded in the media, both on the public stage and behind the scenes... -

Book : Great Expectations (ignatius Critical Editions) -...
-Titulo Original : Great Expectations (ignatius Critical Editions)-Fabricante : Ignatius Press-Descripcion Original: Pope John Paul II described Dickens books as filled with love for the poor and a sense of social regeneration . . . warm with imagination and humanity. Such true charity permeates Dickens novels and ultimately drives the characters either to choose regeneration or risk disintegration. In Great Expectations, Pip--symbolic of the pilgrim convert--gains both improved fortunes and a growth in wisdom, but as he acquires the latter, he must relinquish the former--ending with a wealth of profound goodness, not of worldly goods. That the Dickensian message was a Christian one is unmistakable. Reminiscent of an Augustinian model, one of reflection, conversion, and moral improvement, Pip undergoes an internal change that manifests itself in his profound contrition for his earlier deeds and his equally profound resolution to make amends. As we travel with Pip, we find that Dickens leads us to an acceptance of worldly limitations and an anticipation of final salvation. The exciting new edition of Dickenss classic novel includes critical essays by some of todays leading Dickens scholars... -

Book : Othello Ignatius Critical Edition (ignatius Critical.
-Titulo Original : Othello Ignatius Critical Edition (ignatius Critical Editions)-Fabricante : Ignatius Press-Descripcion Original: One of the four great tragedies alongside Hamlet, King Lear, and Macbeth Othello is among the darkest of Shakespeare’s plays, illumining the shadows of the gloomiest recesses of the human psyche and serving as a damning indictment of the world in which it was written. A cautionary tale of the destructiveness of sin and the ruinous consequences of bad philosophy, Othello seems to express Shakespeare’s rage at the cynicism and brutality of the age in which he lived. From the Machiavellian menace of Iago to the blind and prideful jealousy of Othello, this classic of world literature shows us the shadow falling over a society that has turned its back on the light and life of virtue. About the Author Popularly known as the Bard of Avon, English playwright, poet, and actor William Shakespeare was baptised on 26 April 1564. Not much is known about his date of birth or his formal education. Born and brought up in Stratford-upon-Avon, he moved to London at age 21, where he wrote and acted in plays like Hamlet and As You Like It for the theatre group The Kings Men. Shakespeare, who died on 23 April 1616, gave the English language its most beautiful figures of speech, allegories, and images. Joseph Pearce, director of the Aquinas Center for Faith and Culture at Aquinas College in Nashville, is the author of three books on Shakespeare, all published by Ignatius Press, and is the editor of the Ignatius Critical Editions of Romeo and Juliet, The Merchant of Venice, Julius Caesar, Hamlet, King Lear, and Macbeth. Book : Father Elijah An Apocalypse - O'Brien, Michael
-Titulo Original : Father Elijah An Apocalypse-Fabricante : Ignatius Press-Descripcion Original: Review Ive read thousands of books, and this is one of the great ones. I hope tens of thousands read it, and are shaken as I have been. Its a novel that grips one like a thriller -- indeed it is a thriller, but also something far deeper. There are love and friendship, interwoven with drama, but what it is essentially is faith, faith in the Christ. ---Sheldon Vanauken, Author, A Severe MercyFather Elijah is that rare thing, a great novel which is also a testimony to orthodox Catholicism. But it is more even than this. Basing himself squarely on Scripture and human experience, OBrien has produced a prophetic work and a manual of spiritual warfare. This compelling masterpiece will stretch your imagination in the right direction. Read it and pray. ---Stratford Caldecott, Centre for Faith and Culture, OxfordI guarantee you that once you take up this book you will not put it down until the end of the world. Here is a meaty page-turner with the pace of a thriller, beautifully written, and that something more that turns entertainment into literature. ---Ralph McInerny, Author, Fr. Dowling Mysteries Michael OBrien presents a thrilling apocalyptic novel about the condition of the Roman Catholic Church at the end of time. It explores the state of the modern world, and the strengths and weaknesses of the contemporary religious scene, by taking his central character, Father Elijah Schafer, a Carmelite priest, on a secret mission for the Vatican which embroils him in a series of crises and subterfuges affecting the ultimate destiny of the Church.Father Elijah is a convert from Judaism, a survivor of the Holocaust, a man once powerful in Israel. For twenty years he has been buried in the dark night of Carmel on the mountain of the prophet Elijah. The Pope and the Cardinal Secretary of State call him out of obscurity and give him a task of the highest sensitivity: to penetrate into the inner circles of a man whom they believe may be the Antichrist. Their purpose: to call the Man of Sin to repentance, and thus to postpone the great tribulation long enough to preach the Gospel to the whole world. In this richly textured tale, Father Elijah crosses Europe and the Middle East, moves through the echelons of world power, meets saints and sinners, presidents, judges, mystics, embattled Catholic journalists, faithful priests and a conspiracy of traitors within the very House of God. This is an apocalypse in the old literary sense, but one that was written in the light of Christian revelation. About the Author Michael D. OBrien, iconographer, painter, and writer, is the popular author of many best-selling novels including Father Elijah, Elijah in Jerusalem, The Fathers Tale, Eclipse of the Sun, Sophia House, Theophilos, and Island of the World. Book : The Genesis Of Gender A Christian Theory - Favale,...
-Titulo Original : The Genesis Of Gender A Christian Theory-Fabricante : Ignatius Press-Descripcion Original: Review Wielding the magic of her gifted pen, Abigail Favale has written a treasure that culls deep philosophical insight from her riveting intellectual and spiritual journey. Before her conversion to Catholicism, Favale spent years teaching just those postmodern philosophers and literary figures that have turned the Western world upside down. Like a postmodern Saul of Tarsus, she was knocked off her Foucauldian horse for the good of us all: so that, wise to the ways of the world, she could speak the truth in love to our times. -- Erika Bachiochi The question of gender-who we are as men and women-has never been more pressing, or more misunderstood. Weaving personal experience with expert knowledge, Dr. Abigail Favale provides an in-depth yet accessible account of the gender paradigm: a framework for understanding reality and identity that has recently risen to prominence. Favale traces the genealogy of gender to its origins in feminism and postmodern thought, describing how gender has come to eclipse sex, and how that shift is reshaping language, law, medicine, sexuality, and our own self-perceptions. With substance, clarity, and compassion, Favale teases out the hidden assumptions of the gender paradigm and exposes its effects. Yet this book is not merely an expose-it is also a powerful, moving articulation of a Christian understanding of reality: a holistic paradigm that proclaims the dignity of the body, the sacramental meaning of sexual difference, and the interconnectedness of all creation. The Genesis of Gender is a vital, timely resource for anyone seeking to better understand the gender paradigm-and how to live beyond it. Review Favales book is one I will share with my daughters. She begins with the premise that our bodies are for us, in both their blessings and their crosses, and explores how gender helps us know who God has made us to be. Her analysis is sharp, clear, and spoken in love-the right answer to a turbulent age. - Leah Libresco, Author, Building the Benedict Option Abigail Favale has written a beautiful and profound reflection on the gift of our embodiment as male and female. The Genesis of Gender is essential reading for anyone who wants to understand how we arrived at such a confused state and how we can lovingly promote the truth about human nature. - Ryan T. Anderson, Ph.D., President of the Ethics and Public Policy Center; Author, When Harry Became Sally: Responding to the Transgender Moment This book is Catholic in all my favorite senses. It addresses itself to all people of good will. It is intelligent, factually honest, respectful of every human being, and unafraid of where reason and dialogue and empirics lead it. Not to mention that it is a timely, balanced, and brilliant, unpacking of one of the hottest contemporary debates. - Helen M. Alvare, Professor of Law, Antonin Scalia Law School Every culture in history has taken for granted the God-given truth that human beings are created male or female - until now. If you want to understand how and why we got here so quickly and what to do about it, this is the book to read. - Christopher West, Th.D., President, Theology of the Body Institute Wielding the magic of her gifted pen, Abigail Favale has written a treasure that culls deep philosophical insight from her riveting intellectual and spiritual journey. -Titulo Original : Two Patients My Conversion From Abortion To Life-affirming Medicine-Fabricante : Ignatius Press-Descripcion Original: After a terrible misjudgment in the delivery room, Dr. John Bruchalski realized that with every pregnant woman he attends, there are two patients-the mother and her unborn child. In addition to this discovery, two remarkable spiritual experiences deepened his understanding of the kind of man he had become and the one he was called to be. Two Patients is the story of how a physician who practiced abortion came to question the medical status quo and to pioneer an approach to reproductive medicine that respects female fertility, honors the dignity of unborn children, and o ers care to patients regardless of their financial situation. Such health care, writes Dr. John Bruchalski, is merciful medicine, and his memoir gives a glimpse of just how merciful the relationship between a doctor and his two patients-mother and child- can be. Review Dr. Bruchalski has written an inspiring story of love and redemption that speaks to the mind and the heart, and it should be in every medical school library in America. is book is concrete proof that where faith and science meet, wisdom is born. A must-read for all doctors, nurses, and expectant parents! - Sue Ellen Browder, Author, Subverted: How I Helped the Sexual Revolution Hijack the Womens Movement This book reveals how a relativistic worldview can shift and confuse a young persons moral compass to the point where a man who was raised in a pro-life home and only wanted to help women and children is persuaded to perpetrate evil against them. His conversion story and current zeal for life and ethics in medicine are inspiring. - Abby Johnson, Author, Unplanned and The Walls Are Talking This is Dr. Bruchalskis conversion journey from providing abortions to becoming a preeminent pro-life OB/GYN. Along the way, we experience a reawakening of faith and discover the truth, goodness, and beauty of Church teaching. Read and share Two Patients with others. Youll never look at the issue of life the same way again! - David Bereit, Co-founder, 40 Days for Life Dr. Bruchalski is a personal hero of mine.
