Book : My Diwali Light - Mirchandani, Raakhee
-Titulo Original : My Diwali Light-Fabricante : Little, Brown Books For Young Readers-Descripcion Original: A charming holiday story following one girl’s family as they celebrate their Diwali traditions with the ones they love. Devi loves the Diwali season. It’s a time to wear her favorite red bindi and eat samosas until she bursts! Makemithai and design rangoli with her Papa. And paint diyas with her nani-a reminder to shine her light brightly all year long. This joyful story, with vibrant collage illustrations, follows one girl’s Diwali traditions as her family celebrates their favorite holiday with the ones they love. From School Library Journal K-Gr 3-Many picture books about Diwali have recently been published; what sets this one apart is its mixture of both traditional and new ways to celebrate the holiday in a secular nation. Diwali is Devis favorite time of year because that means there will be sweets, new clothes, jewelry, bindis, marigolds, diyas, rangoli, lights, and sparklers-but most of all, her family will be hosting a big party. The book has good pacing, starting from the ways in which Devis family prepares for Diwali. Devi cleans her room and makes food with Nani, Papa, and Mama. Then, they commemorate by gathering and conducting a puja. The story presents both the celebration of Diwali and also the cleansing, prayers, and offerings involved. Mirchandani equates Diwali with collectivity, showing that the joy of the holiday can be shared with family and friends inside and outside of the culture. The illustrations are collage-style, which is fun and colorful for children, but may be a bit simplistic. Kelkar pieces together actual fabric patterns, but the intricacy of clothing like sarees and salwar kameez, and jewelry like tikkas and naths, are lost in these illustrations. Back matter includes notes from both Mirchandani and Kelkar, where they share their personal connections to the holiday. VERDICT The authenticity and flow of the narrative makes this a great addition to a South Asian collection. Fans of Jyoti Rajan Gopals American Desi, also illustrated by Kelkar, will enjoy this book.-Paige Pagan?(c) Copyright 2011. Library Journals LLC, a wholly owned subsidiary of Media Source, Inc. No redistribution permitted. Review “[A] vibrant account of a close-knit family and community. MY DIWALI LIGHT should be part of all sets of books about traditions and cultures.” Booklist Mirchandani equates Diwali with collectivity, showing that the joy of the holiday can be shared with family and friends inside and outside of the culture. SLJ Mirchandani’s simple, elegant text explains the holiday, vividly bringing to life a family that loves coming together to share traditions, while Kelkar’s bold use of color (particularly shades of purple, blue, and green) makes the illustrations pop….A warm, heartfelt ode to Diwali and the joys of family. Kirkus About the Author Raakhee Mirchandani is an award-winning writer and editor and the author of Hair Twins and Super Satya Saves the Day. BEWARE OF CRANKENSTEIN! Hes a little monster of crankiness that no one can destroy! MEHHRRRR!!! He may look like any ordinary boy, but when faced with a rainy day, a melting popsicle, or an early bedtime, one little boy transforms into a mumbling, grumbling Crankenstein. When Crankenstein meets his match in a fellow Crankenstein, the results could be catastrophic--or they could be just what he needs to brighten his day! This hilarious and relatable tale of grumpiness gone awry will turn toddler tantrums to giggles in no time. Dont miss the other books about Crankenstein! A Crankenstein Valentine Trick or Treat, Crankenstein From Booklist There’s plenty to be cranky about out there in the world, even-or maybe especially-if you’re a kid. As envisioned by Berger (Martha Doesn’t Share!, 2010) and Santat (Sidekicks, 2011), such events are enough to produce a literal monster. Faced with the slings and arrows of early wake-up calls, miserly Halloween candy givers, melting Popsicles, long lines, cough syrup, and bedtime, the fearsome Crankenstein can only respond with a baleful look and a groaning “MEHHRRRR!” The only possible cure for such terror? Laughter, naturally, which comes along with play and friendship and puts a total, if temporary, kibosh on the crankiness. The premise plants an amusing seed, which Santat’s art brings to full, glowing life, in giant two-page spreads alternately blazing with or darkened by appropriate digital hues. The size of the faces matches the size of the emotions, and Santat’s gift with exaggerated expressions ensures that this monster, in the tradition of all the greats, inspires sympathy as well as fear. -Titulo Original : The Door Of No Return-Fabricante : Little, Brown Books For Young Readers-Descripcion Original: Review An Amazon Best Book of October 2022: Inspired by Ghanian history, Kwame Alexander’s exceptional novel in verse flows as easily as the water running through his young protagonist’s dreams. Eleven-year-old Kofi Offin lives in a small village in West Africa, soaking up the ancestor stories his grandfather shares, playing games of Oware, going to school, swimming in the river that is like his second home, and waiting for the ceremony that will usher him into manhood. Immersed in family, school, and the excitement of a first crush, Kofi’s world turns upside down when a terrible accident turns a festive occasion into one filled with sorrow and anger-and that’s just a glimpse of what’s to come. The Door to No Return is a master work of storytelling, a novel that moves you with joy, fear, sadness, hope, and love for the brave, resilient boy at its heart. -Seira Wilson, Amazon Editor Dreams are today’s answers for tomorrow’s questions. 11-year-old Kofi Offin dreams of water. Its mysterious, immersive quality. The rich, earthy scent of the current. The clearness, its urgent whisper that beckons with promises and secrets… Kofi has heard the call on the banks of Upper Kwanta, in the village where he lives. He loves these things above all else: his family, the fireside tales of his father’s father, a girl named Ama, and, of course, swimming. Some say he moves like a minnow, not just an ordinary boy so he’s hoping to finally prove himself in front of Ama and his friends in a swimming contest against his older, stronger cousin. But before this can take place, a festival comes to the villages of Upper and Lower Kwanta and Kofi’s brother is chosen to represent Upper Kwanta in the wrestling contest. Encircled by cheering spectators and sounding drums, the two wrestlers from different villages kneel, ready to fight. You are only fine, until you are not. The match is over before it has barely begun, when the unthinkable-a sudden death-occurs… The river does not care how grown you are. As his world turns upside down, Kofi soon ends up in a fight for his life. What happens next will send him on a harrowing journey across land and sea, and away from everything he loves. I wish this book existed alongside Huckleberry Finn when I was in school. I am glad it exists now!” Lupita Nyong’o, Actress and Author Alexander turns the nightmare of the past into an epic story for all times and all people.
