Book : Our Violent Ends (these Violent Delights) - Gong,...
-Titulo Original : Our Violent Ends (These Violent Delights)-Fabricante : Margaret K. McElderry Books-Descripcion Original: An instant #1 New York Times bestseller! Shanghai is under siege in this captivating and searingly romantic sequel to These Violent Delights, which New York Times bestselling author Natasha Ngan calls “deliciously dark.” The year is 1927, and Shanghai teeters on the edge of revolution. After sacrificing her relationship with Roma to protect him from the blood feud, Juliette has been a girl on a mission. One wrong move, and her cousin will step in to usurp her place as the Scarlet Gang’s heir. The only way to save the boy she loves from the wrath of the Scarlets is to have him want her dead for murdering his best friend in cold blood. If Juliette were actually guilty of the crime Roma believes she committed, his rejection might sting less. Roma is still reeling from Marshall’s death, and his cousin Benedikt will barely speak to him. Roma knows it’s his fault for letting the ruthless Juliette back into his life, and he’s determined to set things right-even if that means killing the girl he hates and loves with equal measure. Then a new monstrous danger emerges in the city, and though secrets keep them apart, Juliette must secure Roma’s cooperation if they are to end this threat once and for all. Shanghai is already at a boiling point: The Nationalists are marching in, whispers of civil war brew louder every day, and gangster rule faces complete annihilation. Roma and Juliette must put aside their differences to combat monsters and politics, but they aren’t prepared for the biggest threat of all: protecting their hearts from each other. From School Library Journal Gr 8 Up-With the end of These Violent Delights, any peace that might have been found between the White Flowers and the Scarlet Gang has vanished, and Juliette Cai, heir to the Scarlet Gang, is entirely to blame. The year 1926 saw the monster stalking Shanghai killed, but 1927 isnt any more peaceful. The reignited blood feud between the citys rival gangs leaves bodies on the street every day. When Juliettes father gets a mysterious ransom note threatening more monsters if they dont pay up, they surrender the money. The White Flowers dont pay and their territory is attacked-except this monster is contained, controlled, and entirely under someones command. With their positions as heirs under threat, Juliette and Roma, heir to the White Flowers, are forced to team up and follow their only lead into the French Concession. The nationalists and communists are on the verge of violent revolution, and Shanghais gang rule is under threat from both parties, giving this exciting romantic adventure a charged political backdrop. Readers find themselves knowing more than Roma and his friends at the start of the novel, which builds conflict alongside action-packed fight scenes. As what were once subplots in book one begin to take center stage, the story offers increased trans and queer representation. The cast is primarily white and Chinese. VERDICT Gong neatly braids all her subplots into a tightly paced novel that balances a new mystery, a gang war, and romance, and drives it all to a satisfying conclusion. Strange Grace It’s a quiet, lovely day, like every day in Three Graces, except one of the horses is sick. Mairwen Grace puts her hand to the beast’s velvety lips and scrapes her fingers under his chin. She was coming from the boneyard, looping wide over the pasture hill to tease herself with the shadows reaching out from the Devil’s Forest, when she saw the gray stallion shudder and lower his head to the stiff autumn grass. He did not tear a bite, nor nuzzle it, nor raise his head again. He only let his head hang and gave a great, racking cough. She’s never heard a horse cough, or even thought it possible. His flanks darken with sweat and the spirit has drained from his brown eyes. Worry sinks through her gut: Mairwen has known this herd all her sixteen years, and never have any of the sturdy, small horses been anything but the perfect image of health. No one falls ill in Three Graces, because of the bargain. Frowning, Mair leans her shoulder against the horse’s neck, cooing softly to calm the horse and herself. She gazes out at the forest. This near to winter, the leaves curl yellow and orange as far as her eyes can see, to the distant shoulders of mountains and hazy blue sky. Pockets of green remain, of fir and a few mighty oaks whose ... -

Chapter One ONE I WAS GETTING USED TO running. From aliens, from bounty hunters, from underground criminals-when it came to escaping, I was something of an expert by now, even if I didn’t always manage the most graceful exits. So you wouldn’t think plodding through a desert would be all that difficult, even if it was on an alien planet. But we were hitting the point where I’d almost welcome an alien, or the sound of bullets, or anything to break up the sweltering, tedious trudge. My clothes, sticky with sweat, clung to my body, and loose strands of my hair matted to my face. We didn’t have any water, and no one had spoken in maybe an hour, not even Reed, our resident wisecracker. We were all too parched. I almost laughed at the irony. Somehow, after everything we’d survived, we just might die after all, and it wouldn’t be alien claws or Omnistellar bullets that did us in. It would be the sun. Better still, it was my fault we were stranded here. Of course, I hadn’t had much choice. The ship we were on was about to explode, thanks to my father activating the self-destruct system. It was either teleport us out or explode with it. Unfortunately, I couldn’t direct my own teleportation power. It wasn’t even mine, technically. It was borrowed from Liam, a treacherous alien with superpowers of his own. Because apparently, borrowing powers was something I did now. I brushed a piece of heavy wet hair out of my face and peered at the city in the distance. Hours of walking, and the stupid thing wasn’t even a glimmer closer than it was when we started. When a flash of light appeared over the city, we’d set off at a near jog, clinging to Cage’s assertion that our friends must have caused the light. Now, hours later, we’d slowed to a trudge. The flash could have been anything. Lightning. Other people. There was no reason to believe it was my friends. It was still entirely possible I’d dropped people I cared about somewhere in space and left them to die. My heart sank. Yeah, the others had pressed me into using my borrowed power. Sure, we’d have died if we’d stayed where we were. But at least it wouldn’t have been my fault. That knowledge tore my ... -

-Titulo Original : Drink, Slay, Love-Fabricante : Margaret K. McElderry Books-Descripcion Original: Vampire romance takes a snarky turn in this humorous novel, coming soon to TV screens as a Lifetime Original Movie! Pearl is a sixteen-year-old vampire…fond of blood, allergic to sunlight, and mostly evil…until the night a sparkly unicorn stabs her through the heart with his horn. Oops. Her family thinks she was attacked by a vampire hunter (because, obviously, unicorns don’t exist), and they’re shocked she survived. They’re even more shocked when Pearl discovers she can now withstand the sun. But they quickly find a way to make use of her new talent. The Vampire King of New England has chosen Pearl’s family to host his feast. If Pearl enrolls in high school, she can make lots of human friends and lure them to the King’s feast-as the entrees. The only problem? Pearl’s starting to feel the twinges of a conscience. How can she serve up her new friends-especially the cute guy who makes her fangs ache-to be slaughtered? Then again, she’s definitely dead if she lets down her family. What’s a sunlight-loving vamp to do? Kirkus Reviews A fresh, modern, and humorous twist on the vampire novel. . . . Lively characters and a sweet romance are icing on the cake. Publishers Weekly Refreshing . . . . The story transitions easily between the vampire and human world, creating characters, settings, and situations that are quite believable and often funny while still maintaining a respectable level of darkness. SLJ This book will likely appeal to young horror fans who enjoy a snarkier, smarter, distinctly less sparkly brand of vampires. VOYA Pearl is, if not exactly likable, refreshingly self-aware and possessed of a sort of mad charm, and readers both vamp-crazy and not will enjoy her dry, unapologetic take on the genre that is at once pointed send-up and twisted celebration. The fight is just beginning. Faris has been forced to give up the man she loves for a dangerous but necessary alliance. Her loyalty is bound by magic to his future bride, the villainous Bryn. And her mother’s powerful spell that could be the key to saving Avinea fights with poisoned magic for control of her heart. Splendor and Spark One A HUNDRED YEARS AGO THE PALACE of new prevast was built for pleasure: four courtyards, an expansive garden with a hedge maze, two ballrooms, a swimming pool, and more than three hundred windows. It once hosted the royal family, a hundred servants, and a revolving guest list for three months out of every twelve. It was a summer home away from the bustle of the capital. An escape. Now it’s a prison. A dozen servants, entire halls of empty rooms, shelves to the ceiling with no books or trinkets to fill them, peeling paint and saltwater decay on the wood and metal fixtures. And a bastard prince who resents every inch of his opulent captivity. It’s suffocating, the way silence and anger ooze through the hallways and fill the ornate cornices of the plastered ceilings. The way they turn every meal into an abrasive symphony of silverware against porcelain, the grating click of teeth against crystal, and the low rumbling interruption of a cleared throat. At least back in the Brim, you could hear music in the dark when you couldn’t sleep; you heard some proof that life existed, at least for somebody else. In the palace all I hear is the ghostly whisper of the sea crashing against the rocks at the mouth of the harbor, haunting and full of loneliness. Which is why almost every night, I escape to the roof, where I can see the stars and New Prevast and be reassured that someone somewhere is still breathing. Tonight my company is the flickering lights that come from the taverns crowded along the span of the Bridge of Ander, which connects the palace grounds to the city proper across the harbor. Chapter 1 1 I prefer winter and fall, when you feel the bone structure in the landscape-the loneliness of it-the dead feeling of winter. Something waits beneath it-the whole story doesn’t show. -ANDREW WYETH Human girls cry when they’re sad and laugh when they’re happy. They have a single fixed shape rather than shifting with their whims like windblown smoke. They have their very own parents, whom they love. They don’t go around stealing other girls’ mothers. At least that’s what Kaye thought human girls were like. She wouldn’t really know. After all, she wasn’t human. Fingering the hole on the left side of her fishnets, Kaye poked at the green skin underneath as she considered herself in the mirror. “Your rat wants to come,” Lutie-loo said. Kaye turned toward the lidded fish tank, where the doll-size faerie had her thin, pale fingers pressed against the outside of the glass. Inside, Kaye’s brown rat, Armageddon, sniffed the air. Isaac was curled in a white ball in the far corner. “He likes coronations.” “Can you really understand what he’s saying?” Kaye asked, pulling an olive skirt over her head and wriggling it onto her hips. “He’s just a rat,” Lutie said, turning toward Kaye. One of her moth wings dusted the side of the cage with pale powder. “Anyone can talk rat.” “Well, I can’t. Do I look too monochromatic in this?” Lutie nodded. “I like it.” Kaye heard her grandmother’s voice calling from downstairs. “Where are you? I made you a sandwich!” “Be there in a second!” Kaye shouted back. Lutie kissed the glass wall of the cage. “Well, can the rat come or not?” “I guess. Sure. I mean, if you can get him to not run away.” Kaye laced up one thick-soled black boot and limped around the room looking for its mate. Her old bed frame was in pieces in the attic, her old dolls were dressed in punk-rock finery, and above the new mattress on the floor Kaye had painted a mural where a headboard might have been. It was half finished-a tree with deep, intricate roots and gilded bark. Although she’d thought it would, the decorating still hadn’t made the room feel like hers. When he’d seen the mural, Roiben had remarked that she could glamour the room into looking any way she wanted, but a magical veneer-no matter how lovely-still didn’t seem real to her. Or maybe it seemed too real, too much a reminder of why she didn’t belong in ... -

Book : Fig - Schantz, Sarah Elizabeth
-Titulo Original : Fig-Fabricante : Margaret K. McElderry Books-Descripcion Original: An NPR Best Book of 2015 Love and sacrifice intertwine in this brilliant debut of rare beauty about a girl dealing with her mother’s schizophrenia and her own mental illness. Fig’s world lies somewhere between reality and fantasy. But as she watches Mama slowly come undone, it becomes hard to tell what is real and what is not, what is fun and what is frightening. To save Mama, Fig begins a fierce battle to bring her back. She knows that her daily sacrifices, like not touching metal one day or avoiding water the next, are the only way to cure Mama. The problem is that in the process of a daily sacrifice, Fig begins to lose herself as well, increasingly isolating herself from her classmates and engaging in self-destructive behavior that only further sets her apart. Spanning the course of Fig’s childhood from age six to nineteen, this deeply provocative novel is more than a portrait of a mother, a daughter, and the struggle that comes with all-consuming love. It is an acutely honest and often painful portrayal of life with mental illness and the lengths to which a young woman must go to handle the ordeals-real or imaginary-thrown her way. Review ** STARRED REVIEW ** In a novel rich with metaphors, newcomer Schantz explores the tender, heartwrenching relationship between a schizophrenic mother and her highly gifted daughter. The beautiful and remote rural setting underscores Fig’s isolation among classmates who view her family as strange and her joy during fleeting moments when her mother appears to be cured. Readers will get a strong sense of the powerful bond of love between parents and child as Fig’s family strives to navigate the quagmire of mental illness. -- Publishers Weekly, *STARRED REVIEW* March 2, 2015 Readers who appreciate melancholic, lyrical narratives will likely be moved by Fig’s heartbreaking tale. -- Booklist April 1, 2015 Schantz gives readers insight into mental illness and how it affects the people around those who suffer from it. As Fig grows from six years old to an adult, she deals with her mother’s illness in both healthy and unhealthy ways. Readers soon realize that Fig is dealing with her own mental illness. Schantz’s portrayal of this complicated relationship and fight, both within the character of Fig and with her mother, is touching and unsettling at the same time. It is beautifully painful to experience. -- VOYA April 2015 “Somehow both lyrical and searing, Fig portrays all the fear and confusion and loneliness of living with an unstable parent. And yet, this book offers a redemption that is as honest as it is believable. A remarkable debut.” -- Patricia McCormick, Two-time National Book Award Finalist for Sold and Never Fall Down A thought-provoking debut that gives voice to children coping with the hardships of being raised in families afflicted by mental illness. By merging reality and fantasy, Fig delivers an authentic portrayal of sacrifice, strength, and, ultimately, love. This is a story that needed to be told. -- Kristen-Paige Madonia, author of Fingerprints of You Sarah Elizabeth Schantzs words are so beautiful they hurt. This is an astonishing debut novel-and one not only for young adults, but for all adults. At the heart -and very much the soul-of the book’s powerful narrative is Fig, her voice as authentic at six as it is at eleven. I felt a sense of loss at the end and wanted to keep on reading and reading...Fig is destined to become a classic. Truly the most memorable book I have read in years. -- Agatha Award-winning author, Katherine Hall Page “In Fig, Sarah Elizabeth Schantz has written a spectacular debut of rare beauty and courage. This fascinating journey into a young childs mind is both haunting and electrifying. Book : Traffick - Hopkins, Ellen
-Titulo Original : Traffick-Fabricante : Margaret K. McElderry Books-Descripcion Original: Five teens victimized by sex trafficking try to find their way to a new life in this riveting companion to the New York Times bestselling Tricks from Ellen Hopkins, author of Crank. In her bestselling novel, Tricks, Ellen Hopkins introduced us to five memorable characters tackling these enormous questions: Eden, the preacher’s daughter who turns tricks in Vegas and is helped into a child prostitution rescue; Seth, the gay farm boy disowned by his father who finds himself without money or resources other than his own body; Whitney, the privileged kid coaxed into the life by a pimp and whose dreams are ruined in a heroin haze; Ginger, who runs away from home with her girlfriend and is arrested for soliciting an undercover cop; and Cody, whose gambling habit forces him into the life, but who is shot and left for dead. And now, in Traffick, these five are faced with the toughest question of all: Is there a way out? How these five teenagers face the aftermath of their decisions and experiences is the soul of this story that exposes the dark, ferocious underbelly of the child trafficking trade. Heartwrenching and hopeful, Traffick takes us on five separate but intertwined journeys through the painful challenges of recovery, rehabilitation, and renewal to forgiveness and love. All the way home. From School Library Journal Gr 10 Up-In this sequel to Tricks (S. & S., 2009), the author revisits the lives of five very different young adults who ended up victims of sex trafficking in Las Vegas. Hopkins spares no details while relaying the dire circumstances Eden, Seth, Whitney, Ginger, and Cody experienced and yet still manages to infuse each characters story with hope. The protagonists have to decide what their futures will hold and how much they want to fight to get there. Reading the first novel is not necessary, as enough backstory is provided. However, some readers may prefer to understand the teens path to sex trafficking before reading this story of redemption. Hopkins clearly has done her research, as detailed in an authors note, and the stories carry even more weight when readers realize that this is the reality many children and teens face. Hopkinss use of free verse allows the raw emotion to shine through, and mature teens will hang on to every word. VERDICT Ordering is a must for libraries where the first was popular. Miraculously, though, they have spent Ariels entire junior year in Sonora, CA, and she hopes that, for once, they can stick around. Here, she has finally experienced a bit of stability and made friends. She has also begun to explore her sexuality with both new guy Gabe and Monica, her queer Mexican American best friend. Ariel keeps her feelings for Monica from her father, who never lets her forget that her mother left them when Ariel was two to run off with her lesbian lover. Can Prince Tal and his beloved merman Athlen survive such a journey toward a happy ending? Lukens attempts to weave together too many plots in this queer YA fantasy novel. Chapter 1 1 BECAUSE HE WAS a teenager, and teenagers take pleasure in exploring wacky ideas, Laz Hayerian had wondered since the sixth grade whether we are the same person when we wake up that we were when we went to sleep. Specifically, he wondered if he was the same person, because sometimes his dreams persisted in memory as if they had been real events. Did dream memories change him the way real memories did? This always led to the deeper question: Since Laz had memories that came, not from dreams, but from timestreams he had stepped out of, did his intertwined memories of other realities make him less sane? Yet he didn’t feel any aches or sore spots, and when he flexed muscles up and down his body, nothing caused him pain. So Laz did what he had always done since his earliest memories of childhood. He searched for the alternate paths through time that were always close enough for him to take hold and shift, changing the story of events in bold or barely perceptible ways. It didn’t matter which, as long as it got him into a place where things made more sense. For the first time in his life he could not find any of the alternate timestreams. No, no, he was finding them, yes, thousands of them-as always. Only none of them went back even a moment earlier than the moment he woke up just now. And none of them showed him doing anything different, so there was no point in side stepping from one to another. He was afraid. He had never reached out and found...
