Tom Sawyer is resilient, enterprising, and vainglorious, and in a series of adventures along the banks of the Mississippi he usually manages to come out on top. From petty triumphs over his friends and over his long-suffering Aunt Polly, to his intervention in a murder trial, Tom engages readers of all ages. -Titulo Original : The Secret Garden (oxford Worlds Classics)-Fabricante : Oxford University Press-Descripcion Original: An orphaned girl, a grim moorland manor with hundreds of empty rooms, strange cries in the night, and a walled garden, with its door locked and the key buried. These are the ingredients of one of the most famous and well-loved of childrens classics, an inspiring story of regeneration and salvation that gently subverted the conventions of a century of romantic and gothic fiction for girls. Marking the one hundredth anniversary of the publication of The Secret Garden, this new edition of Frances Hodgson Burnetts classic tale of redemption and renewal features a fascinating introduction by Peter Hunt that explores the relationship between the book and the 19th-century genres of girls stories, romances, the gothic, and the sensational, and examines the books symbolic undercurrents. The book includes new explanatory notes that point out literary parallels and manuscript changes as well as glossing historical allusions and meanings, an up-to-date bibliography, a new chronology, and Burnetts essay My Robin, a companion piece to the book. The novel is closely associated with anxiety about a possible invasion of Great Britain at the turn of the century, and concerns about imperial expansion and its impact, and it drew on the latest astronomical knowledge to imagine a desert planet, Mars, turning to Earth for its future. Precio:  $63,919.00

Book : The Jungle (oxford Worlds Classics) - Sinclair, Upton

-Titulo Original : The Jungle (oxford Worlds Classics)-Fabricante : Oxford University Press-Descripcion Original: A searing novel of social realism, Upton Sinclairs The Jungle follows the fortunes of Jurgis Rudkus, an immigrant who finds in the stockyards of turn-of-the-century Chicago a ruthless system that degrades and impoverishes him, and an industry whose filthy practices contaminate the meat it processes. From the stench of the killing-beds to the horrors of the fertilizer-works, the appalling conditions in which Jurgis works are described in intense detail by an author bent on social reform. So powerful was the books message that it caught the eye of President Theodore Roosevelt and led to changes to the food hygiene laws. In his Introduction to this new edition, Russ Castronovo highlights the aesthetic concerns that were central to Sinclairs aspirations, examining the relationship between history and historical fiction, and between the documentary impulse and literary narrative. As he examines the books disputed status as novel (it is propaganda or literature?), he reveals why Sinclairs message-driven fiction has relevance to literary and historical matters today, now more than a hundred years after the novel first appeared in print. Book : Black Beauty (oxford Worlds Classics) - Sewell, Anna

-Titulo Original : Black Beauty (oxford Worlds Classics)-Fabricante : Oxford University Press-Descripcion Original: Now a classic of childrens literature, though not originally published for children, this new edition of Anna Sewells famed Autobiography of a Horse is the only available critical edition, with illuminating features not found elsewhere. One of the bestselling novels in English, Black Beauty was originally written to expose and prevent cruelty to horses. Told by Black Beauty himself, this moving story recounts his idyllic colt-hood and his experiences at the hands of a variety of owners, good and bad. Describing his life as a horse in Victorian England, he tells of the unthinking brutality to which horses were often subjected. A sympathetic hero who faces danger and excitement, Black Beauty taught powerful lessons that influenced animal welfare in England and America. Indeed, the novel was known in America as the Uncle Toms Cabin of the Horse. This edition is edited by Sewells biographer, Adrienne E. Gavin, whose wide-ranging introduction draws on the latest scholarship to examine the multiple ways in which the story has been read: as childrens classic, protest novel, horse-care manual, feminist text, slave narrative, autobiography, and more. Also included are illustrations and material from the first American edition, such as an appendix on Killing Animals Humanely. In addition, there is a glossary of equine terms and an appendix of variants between the first British and American editions. Book : Better Never To Have Been The Harm Of Coming Into...

-Titulo Original : Better Never To Have Been The Harm Of Coming Into Existence-Fabricante : Oxford University Press-Descripcion Original: Most people believe that they were either benefited or at least not harmed by being brought into existence. Thus, if they ever do reflect on whether they should bring others into existence---rather than having children without even thinking about whether they should---they presume that they do them no harm. Better Never to Have Been challenges these assumptions. David Benatar argues that coming into existence is always a serious harm. Although the good things in ones life make ones life go better than it otherwise would have gone, one could not have been deprived by their absence if one had not existed. Those who never exist cannot be deprived. However, by coming into existence one does suffer quite serious harms that could not have befallen one had one not come into existence. Drawing on the relevant psychological literature, the author shows that there are a number of well-documented features of human psychology that explain why people systematically overestimate the quality of their lives and why they are thus resistant to the suggestion that they were seriously harmed by being brought into existence. The author then argues for the anti-natal view---that it is always wrong to have children---and he shows that combining the anti-natal view with common pro-choice views about foetal moral status yield a pro-death view about abortion (at the earlier stages of gestation). Anti-natalism also implies that it would be better if humanity became extinct. Although counter-intuitive for many, that implication is defended, not least by showing that it solves many conundrums of moral theory about population. About the Author David Benatar is currently Senior Lecturer in the Philosophy Department at the University of Cape Town, South Africa. He received his Ph.D. from that university, did post-doctoral work at the University of Wisconsin-Madison from 1993 to 1995, and was Visiting Assistant Professor at the College of Charleston, South Carolina, from 1995 until 1997. His teaching and research interests are in moral philosophy and related areas. In 1999 he was awarded the University of Cape Towns Distinguished Teacher Award...

Book : Making Good Progress? The Future Of Assessment For...

-Titulo Original : Making Good Progress? The Future Of Assessment For Learning-Fabricante : Oxford University Press-Descripcion Original: Making Good Progress? is a research-informed examination of formative assessment practices that analyses the impact Assessment for Learning has had in our classrooms. Making Good Progress? outlines practical recommendations and support that Primary and Secondary teachers can follow in order to achieve the most effective classroom-based approach to ongoing assessment. Written by Daisy Christodoulou, Head of Assessment at Ark Academy, Making Good Progress? offers clear, up-to-date advice to help develop and extend best practice for any teacher assessing pupils in the wake of life beyond levels. Review Christodoulou is one of the most remarkable writers in education the UK has seen in decades, because she takes a subject as potentially opaque and esoteric as assessment, and unpacks it in an intelligible, vital way that neither patronises the novice or offends the expert. Her first book, Seven Myths, is one of the few texts that every new teacher should read. Her second book is, rather amazingly, another. It should be read deeply, broadly, everywhere that children are taught and assessments are used. Tom Bennett, chair of the DfE Behaviour Management Group and founder of researchED Daisy is one of the leading thinkers on assessment in the UK and this book is essential reading for everyone who works in education. It shows that flaws in assessment are the cause of so many issues in our education system and gives us a clear path to fixing those flaws. Sam Freedman, Executive Director of Programmes at Teach First and trustee of the Teacher Development Trust Schools are going to have to re-think their methods of assessing, recording and reporting, from scratch, and this book is an excellent place to start. Dylan Wiliam, Emeritus Professor of Educational Assessment at University College London This book addresses some of the most pressing areas in the field: namely why assessment for learning has too often become assessment of learning and why marking and feedback are not the same thing. It sets out a new vision of assessment in a clear, fluid style that will be just as useful to the newly qualified teacher as the seasoned academic Carl Hendrick, Head of Learning and Research at Wellington College About the Author Daisy Christodoulou Daisy Christodoulou is the Head of Assessment at Ark Schools. The Aspern Papers is one of Jamess best-known and most accomplished novellas, whose plot foreshadows the modern cult of the writer as celebrity, and the hunger to uncover previously unseen writings. Indeed, in all four stories collected here--including The Death of the Lion, The Figure in the Carpet and The Birthplace--the figure of the artist is central. Extraordinarily prophetic, James explores the emergent new cult of the writer as celebrity, and asks: can the person behind the art ever truly be known, and can our knowledge of the artists life ever explain the act of creativity. The collection features an Introduction by distinguished James scholar Adrian Poole, who explores the central themes of all four stories and their literary contexts. In addition, Poole includes relevant extracts from Jamess Prefaces and Notebooks in which the origins and development of the stories are described as well as an appendix on stage and screen versions of The Aspern Papers. Book : The Mayor Of Casterbridge (oxford Worlds Classics) -.

-Titulo Original : The Mayor Of Casterbridge (oxford Worlds Classics)-Fabricante : Oxford University Press-Descripcion Original: Set against the backdrop of peaceful south-west England, where Thomas Hardy spent much of his youth, The Mayor of Casterbridge captures the authors unique genius for depicting the absurdity underlying much of the sorrow and humor in our lives. Michael Henchard is an out-of-work hay-trusser who gets drunk at a local fair and impulsively sells his wife Susan and baby daughter. Eighteen years later Susan and her daughter seek him out, only to discover that he has become the most prominent man in Casterbridge. Henchard attempts to make amends for his youthful misdeeds but his unchanged impulsiveness clouds his relationships in love as well as his fortunes in business. Although Henchard is fated to be a modern-day tragic hero, unable to survive in the new commercial world, his story is also a journey towards love. This edition is the only critically established text of the novel, based on a comprehensive study of the manuscript and Hardys extensive revisions.
