Book : Asian Data Privacy Laws Trade & Human Rights...
-Titulo Original : Asian Data Privacy Laws: Trade & Human Rights Perspectives-Fabricante : Oxford University Press-Descripcion Original: Now in paperback format, this is the first work to examine data privacy laws across Asia, covering all 26 countries and separate jurisdictions, and with in-depth analysis of the 14 which have specialised data privacy laws. Professor Greenleaf demonstrates the increasing world-wide significance of data privacy and the international context of the development of national data privacy laws as well as assessing the laws, their powers and their enforcement against international standards. The book also contains a web link to an update to mid-2017. Review In a fast-changing area of research, Graham Greenleaf has provided an invaluable reference work. To those interested in getting up to speed on specific jurisdictions, the survey chapters offer quick but thorough introductions to the laws in place. More importantly, however, his assessment of the various Asian jurisdictions highlights the experimentation and innovation that has characterized legal developments in the last decade or so. - Simon Chesterman, Asian Journal of Comparative Law [...] data privacy laws are being enacted at an ever faster rate with most of this growth in recent years occurring outside Europe, North America, and other Western spheres. There is only a relatively small amount of scholarship dedicated to mapping this non-Western growth ... Asian Data Privacy Laws: Trade and Human Rights Perspectives is the highpoint so far of this documentary effort. It is also a superb confirmation of his status as one of the worlds leading experts on law concerning protection of privacy and personal data. ... The book is thus essential reading for anyone who wants to gain a thorough understanding of the nature of data privacy law as a global phenomenon ... it will stand as a truly classic study in its field for many years to come. - Lee A. Bygrave, Department of Private Law, University of Oslo (Computer Law & Security Review) Greenleafs comprehensive and authoritative survey is the first work to examine data privacy laws across Asia in such detail, with an in-depth analysis of data privacy authorities and their powers in nine Asian countries and a lighter review of 20 more, as well as the international context in which these laws have developed, common themes among them, regional trends and possible futures. Its keenest readers will be academics, regulators and policy-makers in the areas of data protection and privacy law, with legal practitioners in the Asian region and beyond also in line. But anyone looking to see how the Asian century is manifesting in the area of privacy protection, including many in the technology and communications sector, will also find something of interest among the mass of detail on individual regimes or in the birds-eye view of the historical, cultural and legal context. - David Vaile, University of New South Wales Greenleafs analyses and treatment of privacy law in the Asian region provides academic insights and inspiration for well comparative privacy law researches to be developed in other non-European countries particularly in the Middle East, Latin America and Africa where data privacy policies are gaining momentum...I strongly reccomend the book. - Alex B. Makulilo, University of Bremen Professor Graham Greenleafs Asian Data Privacy Laws: Trade and Human Rights Perspectives is the only comprehensive book available that examines and aggregates the privacy laws of countries across Asia. This is important because on an international level, Asian privacy law is relatively underdeveloped when compared with the privacy law of other regions including the Americas and Europe. With the rise of Asia as an economic and technological powerhouse, Asian privacy laws are becoming increasingly crucial to any serious study of international privacy law It is impossible to divine exactly how Asian privacy law will develop, but with this treatise, Greenleaf has created a laudable resource for pri... -

Book : The Panoptic Sort A Political Economy Of Personal...
-Titulo Original : The Panoptic Sort: A Political Economy Of Personal Information-Fabricante : Oxford University Press-Descripcion Original: The Panoptic Sort was published in 1993. Its focus was on privacy and surveillance. But unlike the majority of publications addressing these topics in the United States at the time that were focused on the privacy concerns of individuals, especially those related to threats associated with government surveillance, that book sought to direct public toward the activities of commercial firms. It was highly critical of the failure of scholars and political activists to pay sufficient attention to the threats to individual autonomy, collective agency, and the exercise of social responsibility. The Panoptic Sort was intended to help us all to understand just what was at stake when the bureaucracies of government and commerce gathered, processed, and made use of an almost unlimited amount of personal, and transaction-generated information to manage social, economic, and political activities within society. It argued that unlike Foucaults panoptic prison, which involved continual, all-encompassing surveillance, the panoptic systems being developed at that time were turning their attention toward the development of techniques for the identification and classification of disciplinary subjects into distinct groups in ways that would increase the efficiency with which the techniques of correct training could be applied to those group members. While the first edition provided numerous examples from marketing, employment, insurance, credit management, and the provision of government and social services, the second edition extends descriptions of the technologies that have been developed and incorporated into the panoptic sort in the nearly 30 years since its initial publication. In addition, it places these technological advances and systemic expansions into the context of quite significant transformations in the nature of capitalism. In addition to the massive expansion in the amount of data and information being gathered, processed, and distributed for use by corporations, government agencies, and newly developing public-private partnerships, advances in artificial intelligence and machine learning have placed the development of autonomous devices into positions of power that had barely been imagined in the past. Assessments of the implications for democracy that many associate with the possibility of an algorithmic Leviathan, invite a reconsideration of Jacques Elluls distressing predictions about the future that ended the first edition of The Panoptic Sort. Review Surveillance capitalism may have been birthed by Google but its gestation began towards the end of the twentieth century. This welcome reissue and update of Oscar Gandys signal classic, The Panoptic Sort, comes with a luminous afterword, connecting digital discrimination in the dot-coms with the exploitative activities of todays platforms. Their inequitable global challenge is unflinchingly explained along with hints of hope for a fairer future. David Lyon, Director, The Surveillance Studies Centre, Queens University Thirty years ago, one might have thought, The Panoptic Sort, a brilliant concept, mainly of academic interest. Time has revealed its deadly precision - time lost to ravaging surveillance, incipient schemes for sorting people out, and the rise of a class of powerful controllers. In the Second Edition, Oscar Gandy offers a reprise, including a generous review of thirty years of work, which it must be said - now, only, is catching up with his groundbreaking ideas. The book is invaluable for every discipline, every stripe of public good activist, and every policy-maker around the globe. Helen Nissenbaum, Professor, Cornell University A masterful book of undisputed importance, The Panoptic Sort examines the forebearers of todays surveillance regimes. At a time when society is being asked to reckon with discriminatory technologies of power, Gandys seminal work equips us with the tools to understand-and chall... -

Book : Semi-state Actors In Cybersecurity - Egloff, Florian.
-Titulo Original : Semi-State Actors In Cybersecurity-Fabricante : Oxford University Press-Descripcion Original: The universe of actors involved in international cybersecurity includes both state actors and semi- and non-state actors, including technology companies, state-sponsored hackers, and cybercriminals. Among these are semi-state actors--actors in a close relationship with one state who sometimes advance this states interests, but are not organizationally integrated into state functions. In Semi-State Actors in Cybersecurity, Florian J. Egloff argues that political relations in cyberspace fundamentally involve concurrent collaboration and competition between states and semi-state actors. To understand the complex interplay of cooperation and competition and the power relations that exist between these actors in international relations, Egloff looks to a historical analogy: that of mercantile companies, privateers, and pirates. Pirates, privateers, and mercantile companies were integral to maritime security between the 16th and 19th centuries. In fact, privateers and mercantile companies, like todays tech companies and private cyber contractors, had a particular relationship to the state in that they conducted state-sanctioned private attacks against foreign vessels. Pirates, like independent hackers, were sometimes useful allies, and other times enemies. These actors traded, explored, plundered, and controlled sea-lanes and territories across the worlds oceans--with state navies lagging behind, often burdened by hierarchy. Today, as cyberspace is woven into the fabric of all aspects of society, the provision and undermining of security in digital spaces has become a new arena for digital pirates, privateers, and mercantile companies. In making the analogy to piracy and privateering, Egloff provides a new understanding of how attackers and defenders use their proximity to the state politically and offers lessons for understanding how actors exercise power in cyberspace. Drawing on historical archival sources, Egloff identifies the parallels between todays cyber in-security and the historical quest for gold and glory on the high seas. The book explains what the presence of semi-state actors means for national and international security, and how semi-state actors are historically and contemporarily linked to understandings of statehood, sovereignty, and the legitimacy of the state. Review It is well known that digital technologies are radically transforming the landscape of world politics, but theorists of international relations have struggled to catch up. In this wide-ranging and sophisticated study, Egloff digs deep into the newly emerging terrain of mercenary spyware companies, hackers-for-hire, and other semi-state actors to examine the changing nature of sovereignty, state power, and cyber security. With thought-provoking historical analogies and carefully detailed case studies, Semi-State Actors in Cybersecurity is essential reading. -- Ron Deibert, Director of the Citizen Lab, University of Torontos Munk School of Global Affairs and Public Policy At last an analysis of cyberspace that moves beyond 20th century analogues. Egloffs thorough and insightful recovery of 16th, 17th, and 19th century piracy and privateering dynamics is a truly pioneering study in capturing what continually escapes most of the current thinking on cyberspace and the myriad of actors empowered by it. By reading cyberspace through these eras, Egloff not only gives agency to non-state actors, he brings greater sophistication to contemporary debates over information-sharing and public private partnerships in cybersecurity. It is a fresh and welcome addition to the scholarship in the field. -- Nina A. Kollars, Associate Professor, Cyber and Innovation Policy Institute, Naval War College Cybersecurity is full of swashbucklers and scallywags, but the piracy analogy has not been fully drawn on until now. In this important contribution to the international relations literature on cybersecurity, Florian Eg... -

Book : Emerging From The Chrysalis Rituals Of Womens...
-Titulo Original : Emerging From The Chrysalis Rituals Of Womens Initiation-Fabricante : Oxford University Press-Descripcion Original: Now reissued in an expanded edition, this unique book offers the first full-length treatment of womens initiation rites in five cultures. Asserting the critical importance of such rites in a world dominated by men, Lincoln shows that in these societies womens initiation involves not only a transformation of the self but also of the cosmos. Considering initiation rites among the Tiyyar of South India, the Navajo, the Tiv of West Africa, and the Tukuna of the Northwest Amazon, Lincoln argues that unlike mens rites, womens rites do not impart a change in hierarchical status, but rather a cosmic change which offers religious compensation for womens generally low socio-political status. Lincoln concludes with a brilliant reconstruction of ancient Greek initiation rites based on his original interpretation of the Demeter and Persephone myth. With a new chapter and bibliography, Emerging from the Chrysalis will be stimulating reading for those interested in ritual and its cultural impact. Review The expanded edition challenges previously held notions of initiation rites, especially for women. The book is a unique contribution, raising a number of critical issues surrounding the cultural construction of gender. Gregory R. Campbell, University of Montana A welcome resource. Lincolns new self-criticism gives students an opportunity too seldom available to note scholarly growth and the influence of new theory on old arguments. Claire R. Farrerr, California State University I could hardly put it down! Students will find it appealing, thought-provoking. Book : Predict And Surveil Data, Discretion, And The Future.
-Titulo Original : Predict And Surveil Data, Discretion, And The Future Of Policing-Fabricante : Oxford University Press-Descripcion Original: The scope of criminal justice surveillance has expanded rapidly in recent decades. At the same time, the use of big data has spread across a range of fields, including finance, politics, healthcare, and marketing. While law enforcements use of big data is hotly contested, very little is known about how the police actually use it in daily operations and with what consequences. In Predict and Surveil, Sarah Brayne offers an unprecedented, inside look at how police use big data and new surveillance technologies, leveraging on-the-ground fieldwork with one of the most technologically advanced law enforcement agencies in the world-the Los Angeles Police Department. Drawing on original interviews and ethnographic observations, Brayne examines the causes and consequences of algorithmic control. She reveals how the police use predictive analytics to deploy resources, identify suspects, and conduct investigations; how the adoption of big data analytics transforms police organizational practices; and how the police themselves respond to these new data-intensive practices. Although big data analytics holds potential to reduce bias and increase efficiency, Brayne argues that it also reproduces and deepens existing patterns of social inequality, threatens privacy, and challenges civil liberties. A groundbreaking examination of the growing role of the private sector in public policing, this book challenges the way we think about the data-heavy supervision law enforcement increasingly imposes upon civilians in the name of objectivity, efficiency, and public safety. Review The author got access to observe the Los Angeles Police Department in operation and to see how predictive policing that relies on large-scale data collection and analysis actually works in practice. She reports that it opens the door to profiling individuals and neighborhoods, building detailed files on people who are not suspected of a crime, avoiding accountability through the use of outside contractors, increasing bias in sentencing, searching without a warrant, and other backward steps. -- World Wide Work excellent and timely book -- Rachel Ferguson, The Library of Economics and Liberty Predict and Surveil is a breakthrough book, a close-up, ethnographically grounded, examination of how urban police departments are using the power of big data to try to anticipate crime and outflank criminals and how, in so doing, they risk reproducing inequality by embedding results of past discrimination inside opaque algorithms. At a moment when urban policing has come under unprecedented scrutiny, this volume provides indispensable insight into a critical element, big data, that could replace due process with guilt by association--or, if used properly, could help reduce discrimination and open policing to democratic control. - Paul DiMaggio, Professor of Sociology, New York University Predict and Surveil reveals not only the sociological drivers of modern police surveillance, but also how the sociological merges with data science to sustain the ideologies of race and inequality at the core of contemporary policing. Sarah Brayne skillfully combines the tools of contemporary ethnography and organizational sociology to show the distorting effects of tech-driven surveillance on the moral judgments that animate policing from top to bottom, judgments that animate invasive tactics that erode the dignity of citizens in everyday life. It is an astonishing accomplishment that should set off alarms in all of us. - Jeffrey Fagan, Isidor and Seville Sulzbacher Professor of Law, Columbia University A brilliant and necessary book. Sarah Brayne incisively reveals how big data is used in policing by taking us inside the precincts and cruisers, and observing first hand how policing platforms work. Its essential reading if you want to understand how data collection and algorithmic scoring are used in the work of police surveillance, classi... -

-Titulo Original : The Happiness Effect: How Social Media Is Driving A Generation To Appear Perfect At Any Cost-Fabricante : Oxford University Press-Descripcion Original: Sexting. Cyberbullying. Narcissism. Social media has become the dominant force in young peoples lives, and each day seems to bring another shocking tale of private pictures getting into the wrong hands, or a lament that young people feel compelled to share their each and every thought with the entire world. Have smartphones and social media created a generation of self-obsessed egomaniacs? Absolutely not, Donna Freitas argues in this provocative book. And, she says, these alarmist fears are drawing attention away from the real issues that young adults are facing. Drawing on a large-scale survey and interviews with students on thirteen college campuses, Freitas finds that what young people are overwhelmingly concerned with--what they really want to talk about--is happiness. They face enormous pressure to look perfect online--not just happy, but blissful, ecstatic, and fabulously successful. Unable to achieve this impossible standard, they are anxious about letting the less-than-perfect parts of themselves become public. Far from wanting to share everything, they are brutally selective when it comes to curating their personal profiles, and worry obsessively that they might unwittingly post something that could come back to haunt them later in life. Through candid conversations with young people from diverse backgrounds, Freitas reveals how even the most well-adjusted individuals can be stricken by self-doubt when they compare their experiences with the vast collective utopia that they see online. And sometimes, as on anonymous platforms like Yik Yak, what they see instead is a depressing cesspool of racism and misogyny. Yet young people are also extremely attached to their smartphones and apps, which sometimes bring them great pleasure. It is very much a love-hate relationship. While much of the publics attention has been focused on headline-grabbing stories, the everyday struggles and joys of young people have remained under the radar. Freitas brings their feelings to the fore, in the words of young people themselves. The Happiness Effect is an eye-opening window into their first-hand experiences of social media and its impact on them. Review Freitass book makes us confront our ever-changing society to help our younger pioneers successfully navigate this technological nuance that is not going away any time soon. - PsycCRITIQUES With thick description and compelling accounts from youth, Freitas invites the reader to tour American collegiate life as she showcases how social media exacerbates the pressure that todays students feel to be happy and successful. The Happiness Effect demonstrates how timeless collegiate practices are being reshaped by the anxiety and stress students face, asking hard questions about technology and social life. - Danah boyd, author of Its Complicated: The Social Lives of Networked Teens An eye-opening, data-driven look at how young people use social media to craft their images, keep tabs on their peers, and create their identities. This book is essential reading for anyone who wants to understand how technology is shaping an entire generation of Americans. - Scott Westerfeld, author of Uglies and Zeroes In the age of social media, we live a new state of self: I share, therefore I am. Here, media researcher Donna Freitas explores what this means for a generation that has never known another way of life. Or as one young man put is to Freitas, reflecting on a date with his girlfriend: Its not an official event until we have taken a selfie. What Freitas finds is poignant, disturbing: There is only one way to be in public: smiling. Read this book to better understand the alienations that follow when we validate our private lives in public spaces. - Sherry Turkle, Professor, MIT; Author of Reclaiming Conversation: The Power of Talk in a Digital Age and Alone Together: Why We Expect More from Technology and Less from Each Other Attention-grab...

Book : Phaedrus (oxford Worlds Classics) - Plato
-Titulo Original : Phaedrus (Oxford Worlds Classics)-Fabricante : Oxford University Press-Descripcion Original: Phaedrus is widely recognized as one of Platos most profound and beautiful works. It takes the form of a dialogue between Socrates and Phaedrus and its ostensible subject is love, especially homoerotic love. Socrates reveals it to be a kind of divine madness that can allow our souls to grow wings and soar to their greatest heights. Then the conversation changes direction and turns to a discussion of rhetoric, which must be based on truth passionately sought, thus allying it to philosophy. The dialogue closes by denigrating the value of the written word in any context, compared to the living teaching of a Socratic philosopher. The shifts of topic and register have given rise to doubts about the unity of the dialogue, doubts which are addressed in the introduction to this volume. Full explanatory notes also elucidate issues throughout the dialogue that might puzzle a modern reader. Father and Son remains one of English literatures seminal autobiographies. In it, Edmund Gosse recounts, with humor and pathos, his childhood as a member of a Victorian Protestant sect and his struggles to forge his own identity despite the loving control of his father. An astute, well-observed, and moving portrait of the tensions of family life, Father and Son remains a classic of twentieth-century literature. Book : How To Read A Film Movies, Media, And Beyond -...
-Titulo Original : How To Read A Film Movies, Media, And Beyond-Fabricante : Oxford University Press-Descripcion Original: Richard Gilman referred to How to Read a Film as simply the best single work of its kind. And Janet Maslin in The New York Times Book Review marveled at James Monacos ability to collect an enormous amount of useful information and assemble it in an exhilaratingly simple and systematic way. Indeed, since its original publication in 1977, this hugely popular book has become the definitive source on film and media. Now, James Monaco offers a special anniversary edition of his classic work, featuring a new preface and several new sections, including an Essential Library: One Hundred Books About Film and Media You Should Read and One Hundred Films You Should See. As in previous editions, Monaco once again looks at film from many vantage points, as both art and craft, sensibility and science, tradition and technology. After examining films close relation to other narrative media such as the novel, painting, photography, television, and even music, the book discusses the elements necessary to understand how films convey meaning, and, more importantly, how we can best discern all that a film is attempting to communicate. In addition, Monaco stresses the still-evolving digital context of film throughout--one of the new sections looks at the untrustworthy nature of digital images and sound--and his chapter on multimedia brings media criticism into the twenty-first century with a thorough discussion of topics like virtual reality, cyberspace, and the proximity of both to film. With hundreds of illustrative black-and-white film stills and diagrams, How to Read a Film is an indispensable addition to the library of everyone who loves the cinema and wants to understand it better. Review Anyone who writes about film, or who is interested in film seriously, just has to have it.--Richard Roud, Director of the New York Film Festival About the Author James Monaco is a writer, publisher, and producer. Book : Animal Anatomy For Artists The Elements Of Form -...
-Titulo Original : Animal Anatomy For Artists: The Elements Of Form-Fabricante : Oxford University Press-Descripcion Original: From the author of the classic Human Anatomy for Artists comes this user-friendly reference guide featuring over five hundred original drawings and over seventy photographs. Designed for painters, sculptors, and illustrators who use animal imagery in their work, Animal Anatomy for Artists offers thorough, in-depth information about the most commonly depicted animals, presented in a logical and easily understood format for artists--whether beginner or accomplished professional. The book focuses on the forms created by muscles and bones, giving artists a crucial three-dimensional understanding of the final, complex outer surface of the animal. Goldfinger not only covers the anatomy of the more common animals, such as the horse, dog, cat, cow, pig, squirrel, and rabbit, but also the anatomy of numerous wild species, including the lion, giraffe, deer, hippopotamus, rhinoceros, elephant, gorilla, sea lion, and bear. Included are drawings of skeletons and how they move at the joints, individual muscles showing their attachments on the skeleton, muscles of the entire animal, cross sections, photographs of live animals, and silhouettes of related animals comparing their shapes and proportions. He offers a new and innovative section on the basic body plan of four-legged animals, giving the reader a crucial conceptual understanding of overall animal structure to which the details of individual animals can then be applied. The chapter on birds covers the skeleton, muscles and feather patterns. The appendix presents photographs of skulls with magnificent horns and antlers and a section on major surface veins. Incredibly thorough, packed with essential information, Animal Anatomy for Artists is a definitive reference work, an essential book for everyone who depicts animals in their art. From Booklist Goldfinger, author of Human Anatomy for Artists (1991), stresses that bodies have specific volumes created by anatomical structures, and he reveals how the interrelationship of muscles and bones determines shape and proportion. His straightforward guide starts with animal classification and a listing of nonmedical terminology and then explicates the basic body plan. Detailed line drawings, black-and-white photographs, and silhouettes, as well as explanations of skeletons, emphasize the functions of various body portions such as lower leg and shoulder joint, and Goldfinger thoroughly depicts individual muscles before progressing to elaborate side views and cross sections of complete anatomies. Feathers, horns, and antlers are treated separately with both diagrams and photos before the text concludes with a brief overview of the venous system. Many will find especially useful the extensive, multimedia, annotated bibliography. This technical treasure is sure to find an audience among artists and serious animal enthusiasts alike.
