Book : Act One An Autobiography - Hart, Moss

-Titulo Original : Act One An Autobiography-Fabricante : St. Martins Griffin-Descripcion Original: Moss Harts Act One, which Lincoln Center Theater presented in 2014 as a play written and directed by James Lapine, is one of the great American memoirs, a glorious memorial to a bygone age filled with all the wonder, drama, and heartbreak that surrounded Broadway in the early twentieth century. Harts story inspired a generation of theatergoers, dramatists, and readers everywhere as he eloquently chronicled his impoverished childhood and his long, determined struggle to reach the opening night of his first Broadway hit. Act One is the quintessential American success story. Review “Moss Harts Act One is not only the best book ever written about the American theater, but one of the great American autobiographies, by turns gripping, hilarious and searing.” Frank Rich“Reading Act One is like going to a wonderful dinner party and being seated next to a man who is more charming, more interesting, smarter, and funnier than you ever knew men were capable of being. Moss Hart is alive in these pages, and I am in love with him.” Ann Patchett, author of This Is the Story of a Happy Marriage and Bel Canto“Is Act One for you? Only if you know that theater is spelled theatre, cast albums are not soundtracks, and intermission is twice as fun as halftime. In that case, not only is Act One for you--it is immediate and required reading.” Tim Federle, author of Better Nate Than Ever and Five, Six, Seven, Nate!“Act One is legendary in the theater world for one simple reason: it speaks personally to those of us who have chosen a life on or around the stage.” James Lapine About the Author Born in New York City in 1904, Moss Hart began his career as a playwright in 1925 with The Hold-Up Man, yet achieved his first major success in the 1930 collaboration with George S. ISBN: 978-1-250-10898-2 Contents Title Page, Copyright Notice, Dedication, Acknowledgements, Introduction, Begin Reading, Conclusion, Letter from the Bahamas Humane Society, About the Author, Copyright, INTRODUCTION This is the story of an orphaned Bahamian raccoon called Pumpkin and her two best friends, Toffee and Oreo. Pumpkin is an island girl through and through but, unlike her wild cousins, she prefers to remain indoors. She enjoys air-conditioning, leftover tea every now and then, and feasting away on sunny-side up eggs. Her story is unique because not only does she reside in the Bahamas, but she also has decided to make Toffee and Oreo her lifelong friends, her sisters, mothers even. Toffee and Oreo are dogs, potcakes, to be precise, a Bahamian term used to describe mutts. No one really knows why they are called potcakes, and there are many different theories, mine being that they would eat leftover local Johnnycake bread from the pot. My husband, Will, and I found these two sisters on the side of the road when they were only eight weeks old. They had a rough start into the world and were in horrendous condition. Toffee had been hit by a car and had sustained a broken hip and a shattered knee, while Oreo had been badly beaten. We knew instantly that they were meant to be with us and we did everything we could to get them healthy and happy. It wasnt long before the two settled into their comfortable new lives, and they are now the madams of the house. Pumpkin came along nearly six years later, in October 2014, after a very unusually windy week in the Bahamas. The little raccoon fell out of a tree in my parents, Rosie and Peters, backyard when she was only one month old and suffered a broken leg. When the mother didnt return, every effort was made to ensure that the tiny creature would have a fighting chance. With the help of friends and vets, we took her in. In the first few days of her new life, she lived with a family that had cared for injured raccoons before, and that is where a little girl called Molly thoughtfully named her Pumpkin. We never looked back. Every day Pumpkin grew stronger and braver, and when she met Toffee and Oreo, they developed an instant bond. The dogs watched over and protected her, and it wasnt long before Pumpkin began to follow her two new friends everywhere, never wanting to leave their sides. It was a surprise to all of us to see these three misfits form such a beautiful connection. Oreo is like the mother, cuddling her and scolding her when she has had enough of Pumpkins bad behavior. She babied Pumpkin from the start and even ...

Fields, The Man on the Flying Trapeze. He is also the author of novels including The Days of Miracles and Wonders. He teaches at the London International Film School. Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy have remained, from 1927 to the present day, the screens most famous and popular comedy double act, celebrated by legions of fans. But despite many books about their films and individual lives, there has never been a fully researched, definitive narrative biography of the duo, from birth to death. Louvish traces the early lives of Stanley Jefferson and Norvell Hardy and the surrounding minstrel and variety theatre, which influenced all of their later work. Louvish examines the rarely seen solo films of both our heroes, prior to their serendipitous pairing in 1927, in the long-lost short Duck Soup. The inspired casting teamed them until their last days. Both often married, they found balancing their personal and professional lives a nearly impossible feat. Between 1927 and 1938, they were able to successfully bridge the gap between silent and sound films, which tripped up most of their prominent colleagues. Their Hal Roach and MGM films were brilliant, but their move in 1941, to Twentieth Century Fox proved disastrous, with the nine films made there ranking as some of the most embarrassing moments of cinematic history. In spite of this, Laurel and Hardy survived as exemplars of lasting genius, and their influence is seen to this day. The clowns were elusive behind their masks, but now Simon Louvish can finally reveal their full and complex humanity, and their passionate devotion to their art. In Stan and Ollie: The Roots of Comedy: The Double Life of Laurel and Hardy, Louvish has seamlessly woven tireless and thorough research into an authoritative biography of these two important and influential Hollywood pioneers. His films include The Ipcress File, Alfie, Hannah and Her Sisters, The Cider House Rules, and Harry Brown. He is the author of the bestselling Whats It All About? and The Elephant to Hollywood. He lives in Surrey with his wife. Charming, engaging, and surprisingly forthright, Michael Caine gives us his insiders view of Hollywood and the story of his brilliant second actWhen he was in his late fifties, Michael Caine believed his glamorous, rags-to-riches Hollywood career had come to an end. The scripts being sent his way were worse and worse. When one script really disappointed, he called the producer to complain about the part. The producer said, No, no, we dont want you for the lover, we want you for the father. Salvation came in the unlikely form of his old friend Jack Nicholson, who convinced him to give acting one more shot. What followed was not only an incredible personal transformation but also one of the most radical comebacks in film history. -Titulo Original : Home Before Daylight My Life On The Road With The Grateful Dead-Fabricante : St. Martins Griffin-Descripcion Original: The untold story of life on the road with the Grateful Dead, written by an insider who lived it from the early days to today.Steve Parish was never one to walk the straight-and-narrow, even during his childhood growing up in Flushing Meadow, Queens. Busted as a teenager for selling acid in the summer of 1968, Parish landed in Rikers Island. The experience changed him and after getting out he did his best to stay out of trouble, securing a job moving music equipment at the New York State Pavilion. The first show he worked was a Grateful Dead concert in July of 1969 and Parish was captivated by the music. A life seemingly headed nowhere had suddenly found its calling as he fell in quickly with a band of likeminded misfits who formed the nucleus of what would be the greatest road crew in rock n roll history.Parish traveled to California where his apprenticeship began. Working for the band for free and learning his craft, Parish got to know Jerry, Bobby, Phil, Billy and Mickey and through the years their relationships forged an unbreakable bond. He became very close with Garcia in particular, acting as his personal roadie and later manager for his solo performances and Garcia Band shows. He was there during times of trouble (like when a pimp held Garcia hostage at gunpoint in a New York hotel room), spending hours by his bedside when Garcia was in a coma in 1986, and performing the duties of best man at his wedding. He was also the last friend to see Garcia alive. Throughout the Deads historic run, there were parties of biblical proportion and celebrity run-ins with everybody from Bob Dylan to Frank Sinatra--but there was a dark side to life on the road and tragedy didnt just strike the musicians. But Home Before Daylight is a story of friendship, of music and redemption. It is a piece of music history, one that reflects the American spirit of adventure and brotherhood. Seen through Steve Parishs eyes and experiences, The Grateful Deads wild ride has never been so revealing. From the Back Cover Never before has a true insider, a member of the Grateful Dead family from the bands early days through today, told the story of life on the road with the Grateful Dead. From San Francisco to Europe to Egypt and back again; from wild parties and horrible tragedies; from laughter to heartbreak--this is the inside story of the most legendary American rock n roll band of all time and the tale of a man who lived it, from roadie to manager and brother. The Grateful Dead was all about improvisation, and Steve spoke that language with flourish...Steve was a central figure, often in the lead of what was going on backstage, in the hotels, on the airplanes, busses, boats, or whatever. If ever I get around to writing a book, youll be reading plenty more about Steve.- Bob Weir, from the foreword About the Author Steve Parish traveled with the Grateful Dead for over thirty years, first as a roadie and later as manager of the Jerry Garcia Band. He still works closely with the band and lives in California. Book : One Way Out The Inside History Of The Allman Brothers

-Titulo Original : One Way Out The Inside History Of The Allman Brothers Band-Fabricante : St. Martins Griffin-Descripcion Original: A New York Times Best seller! One Way Out is the powerful biography of The Allman Brothers Band, an oral history written with the bands participation and filled with original, never-before-published interviews as well as personal letters and correspondence. This is the most in-depth look at a legendary American rock band that has meant so much to so many for so long. For twenty-five years, Alan Paul has covered and written about The Allman Brothers Band, conducting hundreds of interviews, riding the buses with them, attending rehearsals and countless shows. He has interviewed every living band member for this book as well as managers, roadies, and contemporaries, including: Gregg Allman, Dickey Betts, Jaimoe, Butch Trucks, Warren Haynes, Derek Trucks, Oteil Burbridge, the late Allen Woody, Jimmy Herring, Eric Clapton, Bob Weir, and many others.Tracking the bands career from their 1969 formation to today, One Way Out is filled with musical and cultural insights, riveting tales of sometimes violent personality conflicts and betrayals, drug and alcohol use, murder allegations and exoneration, tragic early deaths, road stories, and much more, including the most in-depth look at the acrimonious 2000 parting with founding guitarist Dickey Betts and behind-the-scenes information on the recording of At Fillmore East, Layla, Eat A Peach, Brothers and Sisters, and other classic albums. Review “This pot-stirring oral history reads like a backstory of how musical lightning comes to be. All of the surviving band members get to have their say.” Rolling Stone“Alan has a way with narrative that just draws you in without using the single-level storyline used by other writers who have attempted telling the Allman Brothers Band’s story. He gets right to the hows and whys that give his narrative real substance. Enjoy and become enlightened.” Butch Trucks, the Allman Brothers Band (From the Foreword)“No journalist knows the ins and outs of the Allman Brothers Band better than Alan Paul.” Warren Haynes, the Allman Brothers Band“I learned so much reading One Way Out. If you want to know the real deal, read Alan Paul.” Oteil Burbridge, the Allman Brothers Band“Allman Brothers, unvarnished . . . [Alan Paul]s vast trove of interviews allows the band to tell its own story.” Atlanta Journal Constitution“Alan Paul is one of Americas foremost experts on the Allman Brothers Band. For the past twenty years, he has written informative, comprehensive articles on the band, and he truly understands the essence of their significance. Its great to see him release this chronicle.” E.J. Devokaitis, Curator / Archivist, Allman Brothers Band Museum at the Big House“Alan Pauls One Way Out is a brilliantly detailed all-access pass to the Allman Brothers Band. Using his numerous personal interviews with the band members themselves--both past and present--as well as an almost endless entourage of friends, family members, roadies, managers, promoters, booking agents, record label executives, and fellow musicians, Alan Paul has successfully created the definitive ABB biography.” Randy Poe, author of Skydog: The Duane Allman Story“One Way Out is perhaps the most in-depth look at one of Americas most beloved, but thoroughly dysfunctional ensembles. Engrossing reading . . . Alan Paul has written about the Allmans for the last 25 years, and his depth of knowledge shows. The stories are salty, unfiltered, and straight from the horses mouth. The word definitive gets tossed around so often it has lost some of its meaning, but this 400-page journey into the heart of rock and roll darkness deserves the accolade.” Guitar World Magazine“No matter what you think you know about the Allman Brothers Band, One Way Out is bound to be revelatory on many levels . . . This is essential reading that strips away the myth to expose all the moving parts in vivid detail.” Seattle PI“Music writer Paul catches up with the legendary band in this...

-Titulo Original : What People Wore When A Complete Illustrated History Of Costume From Ancient Times To The Nineteenth Century For Every Level Of Society-Fabricante : St. Martins Griffin-Descripcion Original: What People Wore When combines the studies of two classic nineteenth-century illustrators Auguste Racinet and Friedrich Hottenroth for the first time. Their works are presented first by chronology and then by subject, so that illustrators, historians, and students alike can choose to follow the path of fashion through the centuries, or study in detail the contrasting styles of individual clothing and accessories. Silhouettes reveal the shape of style through the ages, detailed cross-references draw attention to recurring motifs, and navigation bars help the researcher to travel the complex chronology of costume. With authoritative narrative from leading experts in the history of costume, extraordinary contemporary quotes that reveal the impact of style in its day, detailed annotation, and an extensive glossary, the book provides a magnificent study of the rich vocabulary of style through the ages. From School Library Journal Adult/High School-This attractive book will appeal to teens looking for quick answers for a last-minute assignment, and it will also be of interest to budding fashionistas and social historians. Leventon has combined current research on costume and dress through the ages with the detailed beauty of the work of two 19th-century illustrators, Auguste Racinet and Friedrich Hottenroth, to provide a historical and thematic examination of fashion and dress that is both comprehensive and readable. The volume works first and foremost as a reference book, and it is full of informative sidebars and copious cross-references. But it is worth browsing through because it is also full of gorgeous color pictures as well as silhouettes that show the changing shape of clothing and style through time. There is a lot of attention to detail, both visually and textually. The result is an exhaustive, entertaining tome that will be put to good use in reference departments and circulating collections alike.- Caitlin Fralick, Ottawa Public Library, ON Copyright © Reed Business Information, a division of Reed Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved. From Booklist What People Wore When combines the studies of two classic nineteenth-century illustrators, Auguste Racinet and Friedrich Hottenroth. According to the book’s introduction, their work is presented first by era and then by subject, so that illustrators, historians, and students can choose to follow the path of fashion through the centuries or study in detail the contrasting styles of individual clothing and accessories. However, because the various drawings and illustrations are not attributed, the volume misses the chance to compare the works of these two famous costume historians. In the first section of the book, “The Grammar of Costume,” drawings portray the changing trends of fashion worldwide from ancient times to the mid-nineteenth century. The second part, “The Elements of Costume,” surveys types of clothing and accessories, for example, “Women’s Dress, 1300-1600” and “Regional Headwear.” In both sections, cross-references and navigation bars draw attention to recurring motifs. A glossary defines most, but not all, of the terms that are italicized in the text, which was written by leading experts in the field of costume history. Detailed annotations of the drawings and illustrations, along with the glossary and index, provide an interesting study of the vocabulary of style through the ages. A couple of other books that do a good job of covering this broad span of the history of costume include Douglas W. Gorsline’s What People Wore: A Visual History from Ancient Times to Twentieth-Century America (1952) and Bronwyn Cosgrave’s The Complete History of Costume & Fashion: From Egypt to the Present Day (2000). This book is recommended for most libraries and will be a welcome addition to the holdings of public, school, and academic libraries. --Diana Shonrock Review “What People Wore When combines the studies of two cla...

-Titulo Original : Hot Lights, Cold Steel Life, Death And Sleepless Nights In A Surgeons First Years-Fabricante : St. Martins Griffin-Descripcion Original: About the Author Michael J. Collins, M.D., served as the Chief Resident in Orthopedic Surgery at the Mayo Clinic and is now a successful orthopedic surgeon. He is the author of the acclaimed medical memoirs Hot Lights, Cold Steel and Blue Collar, Blue Scrubs. He lives in Hinsdale, Illinois. When Michael Collins decides to become a surgeon, he is totally unprepared for the chaotic life of a resident at a major hospital. A natural overachiever, Collins success, in college and medical school led to a surgical residency at one of the most respected medical centers in the world, the famed Mayo Clinic. But compared to his fellow residents Collins feels inadequate and unprepared. All too soon, the euphoria of beginning his career as an orthopedic resident gives way to the feeling he is a counterfeit, an imposter who has infiltrated a society of brilliant surgeons. This story of Collins four-year surgical residency traces his rise from an eager but clueless first-year resident to accomplished Chief Resident in his final year. With unparalleled humor, he recounts the disparity between peoples perceptions of a doctors glamorous life and the real thing: a succession of run down cars that are towed to the junk yard, long weekends moonlighting at rural hospitals, a family that grows larger every year, and a laughable income.Collins good nature helps him over some of the rough spots but cannot spare him the harsh reality of a doctors life. Every day he is confronted with decisions that will change peoples lives-or end them-forever. A young boys leg is mangled by a tractor: risk the boys life to save his leg, or amputate immediately? A woman diagnosed with bone cancer injures her hip: go through a painful hip operation even though she has only months to live? Like a jolt to the system, he is faced with the reality of suffering and death as he struggles to reconcile his idealism and aspiration to heal with the recognition of his own limitations and imperfections. Unflinching and deeply engaging, Hot Lights, Cold Steel is a humane and passionate reminder that doctors are people too. This is a gripping memoir, at times devastating, others triumphant, but always compulsively readable. Review “Like the very best episode of ER, Collins memoir races from one trauma to the next, keeping this reader spellbound all the way. Collins life as a surgical resident is heartbreaking one minute and triumphant the next. Youll laugh and cry and cheer along with him as his epic journey to become a doctor races toward its gripping conclusion. I love this book and wont soon forget it.” Augusten Burroughs, New York Times bestselling author of Dry and Magical Thinking“One of the best, funniest medical memoirs I have ever read. Hot Lights, Cold Steel is at once darkly humorous and truly compassionate. Not since House of God has there been such a ferociously funny look at the world of hospital medicine.” Michael Palmer, New York Times bestselling author of Fatal and The Society“I adore this book. Its so polished and hilarious. It brought back all the stomach-churning anxieties of my own residency so vividly that I felt exhausted reading it. Dr. Collins has my highest admiration. He has also worked in several different capacities as a journalist, including as an investigative reporter and a producer of television news programs and documentaries. From the founders of the international health-care behemoth Johnson & Johnson in the late 1800s to the contemporary Johnsons of today, such as billionaire New York Jets owner Robert Wood Woody Johnson IV, all is revealed in this scrupulously researched, unauthorized biography by New York Times bestselling author Jerry Oppenheimer. Often compared to the Kennedy clan because of the tragedies and scandals that had befallen both wealthy and powerful families, Crazy Rich, based on scores of exclusive, candid, on-the-record interviews, reveals how the dynastys vast fortune was both intoxicating and toxic through the generations of a family that gave the world Band-Aids and Baby Oil. At the same time, theyve been termed perhaps the most dysfunctional family in the fortune 500. Oppenheimer is the author of biographies of the Kennedys, the Clintons, the Hiltons and Martha Stewart, among other American icons. Review “It would seem that having enough money to do every stupid thing that strikes your fancy is no blessing. . . . [Crazy Rich] is gossipy and fast-moving, with surprising emotional resonance.” Newark Star Ledger“A breathless tell-all . . . Oppenheimer trains his gaze on the Johnsons, the cursed Kennedies of pharmaceuticals--a family who, with every generation, find themselves at the center of celebrity and political scandal. . . . The book is an impressive example of journalistic synthesis, bringing together bits of tabloid journalism not usually connected (playing celebrity connect-the-dots is half the books fun) around a strong narrative core [about] a family whose money can buy influence and power, but comes with costly personal consequences.” Publishers Weekly“A prolific biographer of the rich and infamous, Oppenheimer digs into five generations of the Johnson family . . . detailing their mind-boggling personal wealth. . . . -Titulo Original : The Prince Of Paradise The True Story Of A Hotel Heir, His Seductive Wife, And A Ruthless Murder-Fabricante : St. Martins Griffin-Descripcion Original: About the Author English-born JOHN GLATT is the author of more than twenty-five books including The Lost Girls and My Sweet Angel, and has over thirty years of experience as an investigative journalist in England and America. He has appeared on television and radio programs all over the world, including Dateline NBC, Fox News, ABC’s 20/20, BBC World News, and A&E Biography. True crime reporter John Glatt tells the whole story of this twisted case of passion, perversion, and paradise lost, in Prince of Paradise. Ben Novack, Jr. was born into a life of luxury and opulence. Heir to the legendary Fontainebleau hotel, he spent his childhood surrounded by some of the worlds biggest stars, including Frank Sinatra and the Rat Pack, Elvis Presley, and Ann-Margret, who performed regularly at the Fontainebleaus La Ronde Room. He sat by while his parents entertained presidents and movie stars, as they reigned over Miami Beach in the ‘50s and ‘60s, and when the family business went sour he became wealthy in his own right, founding a multi-million dollar business using connections he made at the Fontainebleau. But Ben, Jr.s luxurious, celebrity-studded lifestyle would end in another hotel room a thousand miles away from the one where he grew up when police found him bound up in duct tape, beaten to death. Seven years earlier, police found Novack in an eerily similar situation when his wife Narcy duct-taped him to a chair for twenty-four hours and robbed him. Claiming it was a sex game, he never pressed charges and never followed through with a divorce. Now prosecutors claimed Narcy let the vicious killers into the room and watched as they beat her husband with dumbbells. They also suspected she was involved in the horrendous death of Novacks mother, just three months before. But it would be Narcys own daughter who implicated her to the police. Review From the provocative opening sentence (When retired police chief James Scarberry heard in July 2009 that Ben Novack Jr. had been brutally murdered, with his eyes gouged out, he was not surprised.), true-crime veteran Glatt grabs the readers attention. With a perfect amount of detail, he traces the sad life of Novack--whose father, Ben Sr., founded Miami Beachs legendary Fountainebleau Hotel--from an unhappy childhood to his death in 2009 at the age of 53. . . .
