Once there was a little boy named Neftali who loved wild things wildly and quiet things quietly. From the moment he could talk, he surrounded himself with words, seeking comfort and inspiration from the magic he discovered between the pages of books. When he was sixteen, he began publishing his writing as Pablo Neruda. (BYR)-Descripcion Original: About the Author April Henry is the New York Times bestselling author of many acclaimed mysteries for adults and young adults, including the YA novels Girl, Stolen; The Girl I Used to Be, which was nominated for an Edgar Award; The Night She Disappeared; and Body in the Woods and Blood Will Tell, Books One and Two in the Point Last Seen series. She lives in Oregon. April Henry masterminds another edge-of-your-seat thriller in this much-anticipated sequel to Girl, Stolen.Six months ago, Griffin Sawyer meant to steal a car, but he never meant to steal the girl asleep in the backseat. Panicked, he took her home. His father, Roy, decided to hold Cheyenne who is blind for ransom. Griffin helped her escape, and now Roy is awaiting trial. As they prepare to testify, Griffin and Cheyenne reconnect and make plans to meet. But the plan goes wrong and Cheyenne gets captured by Roy’s henchmen this time for the kill. Can Cheyenne free herself? And is Griffin a pawn or a player in this deadly chase?April Henry masterminds another edge-of-your-seat thriller in Count All Her Bones. This title has Common Core connections. A Christy Ottaviano Book From School Library Journal Gr 7 Up-This novel picks up a few months after Girl, Stolen left off. Having survived her kidnapping, Cheyenne is back at home, trying to reestablish her life but chafing under the increased security put in place by her father and stepmother. She hasnt spoken to Griffin, her erstwhile, accidental kidnapper and love interest, but cant seem to get him out of her head, and not just because shes preparing to testify against his father, Roy, in his upcoming trial. Griffin is planning on testifying, too, and inevitably the two are thrown back together as Roy plots to keep both of them out of the courtroom. This book offers the same suspense and tightly paced action as its predecessor. Told from alternating viewpoints-which begin to feel a bit clunky and random at times-this work gives much attention to the survival training Cheyenne (who is blind) has received since returning from her first ordeal; these details make her a strong protagonist and help build up to the action-packed climax. Griffin, who is dealing with testifying against his father as well as the death of his mother, receives a less thorough treatment. -Titulo Original : Flamer-Fabricante : Henry Holt And Co. (BYR)-Descripcion Original: About the Author Mike Curato is the award-winning author and illustrator of the Little Elliotseries and the graphic novel Flamer, and has illustrated a number of other books for children, including What If… (by Samantha Berger), Worm Loves Worm, and All the Way to Havana. Award-winning author and artist Mike Curato draws on his own experiences in Flamer, his debut graphic novel, telling a difficult story with humor, compassion, and love. This book will save lives. Jarrett J. Krosoczka, author of National Book Award Finalist Hey, Kiddo I know I’m not gay. Gay boys like other boys. I hate boys. They’re mean, and scary, and they’re always destroying something or saying something dumb or both.I hate that word. Gay. It makes me feel . . . unsafe. Its the summer between middle school and high school, and Aiden Navarro is away at camp. Everyones going through changes but for Aiden, the stakes feel higher. As he navigates friendships, deals with bullies, and spends time with Elias (a boy he cant stop thinking about), he finds himself on a path of self-discovery and acceptance.Godwin Books From School Library Journal Gr 8 Up-As Boy Scout camp draws to a close and high school looms, 14-year-old Aiden Navarro, who is biracial (white and Filipino), is on high alert. Feeling self-conscious about his weight, dealing with racism from other campers, and wondering about his sexuality, he often takes preemptive action to appear unimpeachably heterosexual and unconvincingly attempts to imitate the homophobic, macho behavior of other campers-though his thoughtfulness usually wins out. Aidens precarious balancing of identities pushed upon him and those he tries to hide starts to crumble when he begins to fantasize romantically about his tentmate Elias, a steadfast summer friend who has been unfazed by other campers gossip about Aiden being gay. As Aiden heads into the last days of camp, his desire, self-loathing, and uncertainty come to a boiling point. Curatos incredible art conveys Aidens point of view, his thoughts, and his reimaginings of his physical form with compelling beauty and empathy. The drawing style feels specific to a teens world, spare yet filled with distinct characters and an idyllic camp setting. Most images are in shades of black and gray, which makes the appearance of fire in Aidens dreams and fantasies-in hues of red, yellow, and orange, signifying his passion, rage, desire, and shame-even more poignant as more light is shed on his true self. VERDICT Curato has created a beautiful story of a teen who must decide if he will force himself into the mold of what he thinks a normal boy is, or if he can allow himself to live life on his own terms. An essential book that shows readers that they are never alone in their struggles.-Jennie Law, Georgia State Univ., Atlanta Review This book will save lives. Jarrett J. Krosoczka, author of National Book Award Finalist Hey, Kiddo“[Mike Curato] knows [boys] like Judy Blume knows a teenaged girl, and thats quite a bit.” NPRThis is a story that will be read and reread, and for some, it will be the defining book of their adolescence. Although we may not speak the same language, some things, like friendship, are universal!Follow two young giraffes as they meet, celebrate, and become friends. This bilingual tale will have readers eager to meet new friends and amigos. From School Library Journal PreS-Gr 1-Young children will delight in the antics of two endearing giraffes in this bilingual picture book. This work makes ample use of white space to help readers focus on the plot, and each page presents just one word or short phrase, first in English and then in Spanish, with a word shared by both on one spread. Initially, an English- and a Spanish-speaking giraffe meander unknowingly toward each other as they eat. Oooh, says one. Aaah, declares the other. Food! exclaims one, and ¡Comida! shouts the other. However, neither giraffe notices the other until they are eating from the very same tree. Although they speak different languages, the pair find ways to communicate and common interests that make for a joyful day. Considering the limited number of words in the book, readers must pay close attention to its visual clues. Yet its endearing illustrations provide just enough foreshadowing so that very young children, with adult scaffolding, can make predictions about the story. VERDICT When combined with adult guidance, this small book will be a favorite for repeated, interactive read-alouds given its child-friendly visual appeal and theme of friendship across languages.-Ruth Quiroa, National Louis University, IL Review Praise for How Do You Say? / ¿Como se dice?:Young children will delight in the antics of two endearing giraffes in this bilingual picture book.
