-Titulo Original : When You Wish Upon A Star A Twisted Tale (twisted Tale, A)-Fabricante : Disney-Hyperion-Descripcion Original: What if the Blue Fairy wasnt supposed to help Pinocchio? This New York Times best-selling series twists another Disney classic into a harrowing story in which the Blue Fairy defies fairy law, setting off a dramatic chain of events. Starlight, star bright, first star I see tonight . . . so begins the wish that changes everything for Geppetto, for the Blue Fairy, and for a little puppet named Pinocchio. The Blue Fairy isnt supposed to grant wishes in the small village of Pariva, but something about this one awakens some long-buried flicker within. Perhaps its the hope she senses beneath the old mans loneliness. Or maybe its the fact that long ago, before she was the Blue Fairy, she was a young woman named Chiara from this very village, one with a simple wish: to help others find happiness. Her sister Ilaria always teased her for this, for she had big dreams to leave their sleepy village and become a world-renowned opera singer. The two were close, despite their differences. While Ilaria would give anything to have a fairy grant her wish, Chiara didnt believe in the lore for which their village was famous. Forty years later, Chiara, now the Blue Fairy, defies the rules of magic to help an old friend. But shes discovered by the Scarlet Fairy, formerly Ilaria, who, amid a decades-long grudge, holds the transgression against her sister. They decide to settle things through a good old-fashioned bet, with Pinocchio and Geppettos fate hanging in the balance. Will the sisters find a way back to one another? -Titulo Original : Unbirthday (a Twisted Tale) A Twisted Tale-Fabricante : Disney-Hyperion-Descripcion Original: The 10th installment in the New York Times best-selling A TWISTED TALE series asks: What if Wonderland was in peril and Alice was very, very late? Alice is different than other eighteen-year-old ladies in Kexford, which is perfectly fine with her. She’d rather spend golden afternoons with her trusty camera or in her aunt Vivian’s lively salon, ignoring her sister’s wishes that she stop all that “nonsense” and become a “respectable” member of society. Alice is happy to meander to Miss Yao’s teashop or to visit the children playing in the Square. She’s also interested in learning more about the young lawyer she met there, but just because she’s curious, of course, not because he was sweet and charming. But when Alice develops photographs she has recently taken about town, familiar faces of old suddenly appear in the place of her actual subjects the Queen of Hearts, the Mad Hatter, the Caterpillar. There’s something eerily off about them, even for Wonderland creatures. And as Alice develops a self-portrait, she finds the most disturbing image of all a badly-injured dark-haired girl asking for Alice’s help. Mary Ann. Returning to the place of nonsense from her childhood, Alice finds herself on a mission to stop the Queen of Hearts’ tyrannical rule and to find her place in both worlds. But will she able to do so . . . before the End of Time? Alice is now 18, an adventurous and aspiring photographer. As she takes her photos, some familiar Wonderland faces appear, old friends beckoning her to help them. Alice must navigate both family drama and a burning desire to return to Wonderland through her sisters annoying desires for marriage and expectations to become a proper lady in society. Along the way, Alice meets a misunderstood young lawyer, who is outside the proper social circle, just as she is. This book hits on racial and social injustice in 19th-century England, allowing Alice, who is white, and readers to explore the subjective reality of right and wrong. Through trials and tears, Alice finds herself in and out of Wonderland, trying to save her friends from the Queen of Hearts. The Queen has one objective-to win, whatever the cost. Even though the original story is twisted and strange, this retelling is dark, grim, and grotesque at times. Wonderland isnt tea parties and delicious tiny cakes, but scary and dangerous. Itll take a unique reader and true Alice fan to appreciate this almost horrorlike adaptation. VERDICT A strange reimagining of Wonderland for dark fantasy and horror fans.-Paige Kostelyk, DeMotte Christian Grade School, IN?(c) Copyright 2011. Book : Its Kind Of A Funny Story - Vizzini, Ned

-Titulo Original : Its Kind Of A Funny Story-Fabricante : Disney-Hyperion-Descripcion Original: Review A book about depression that s not the least bit depressing. -- Teen Vogue. Like many ambitious New York City teenagers, Craig Gilner sees entry into Manhattan’s Executive Pre-Professional High School as the ticket to his future. Determined to succeed at life-which means getting into the right high school to get into the right college to get the right job-Craig studies night and day to ace the entrance exam, and does. That’s when things start to get crazy. At his new school, Craig realizes that he isnt brilliant compared to the other kids; he’s just average, and maybe not even that. He soon sees his once-perfect future crumbling away. The stress becomes unbearable and Craig stops eating and sleeping-until, one night, he nearly kills himself. Craig’s suicidal episode gets him checked into a mental hospital, where his new neighbors include a transsexual sex addict, a girl who has scarred her own face with scissors, and the self-elected President Armelio. There, isolated from the crushing pressures of school and friends, Craig is finally able to confront the sources of his anxiety. Ned Vizzini, who himself spent time in a psychiatric hospital, has created a remarkably moving tale about the sometimes unexpected road to happiness. For a novel about depression, it’s definitely a funny story. About the Author Ned Vizzini began writing for The New York Press at the age of fifteen. At nineteen, he had his first book published, Teen Angst? Naaah. . . . His latest book, Be More Chill, was the first young adult novel ever chosen as a Today Show Book Club pick, as well as one of Entertainment Weekly s Top Ten Books for 2004. Ned lives in Brooklyn, New York...

Now, it’s time for their reckoning. This latest novel by the author of the wildly popular Villains series goes deeper into the lives of the twisted, diabolical Odd Sisters, finally revealing the dark truth about who they are and where theyre from. The Odd Sisters will appeal to fans who can’t get enough of the mischievous sisters, as well as draw new readers to Serena Valentino’s darkly fascinating take on the Disney Villains. Enjoy Serena Valentinos entire Villains series. Fairest of All: A Tale of the Wicked Queen (Book 1) The Beast Within: A Tale of Beautys Prince (Book 2) Poor Unfortunate Soul: A Tale of the Sea Witch (Book 3) Mistress of All Evil: A Tale of the Dark Fairy (Book 4) Mother Knows Best: A Tale of the Old Witch (Book 5) The Odd Sisters: A Villains Novel (Book 6) Evil Thing (Book 7) From School Library Journal Gr 4-7-Circe, identified as the Enchantress from Disneys Beauty and the Beast, sets out to right the wrongs caused by the three women who brought her to life: witches Lucinda, Ruby, and Martha. Her companion Snow White has her own mysteries to explore, and they receive advice from The Fairy Godmother, Nanny, and Oberon. Circes travels lead her and Snow White to information about the evil witch Nestis and her role in Circes own family past. The final scene of this sixth book in the series involves Circe and her family and Snow White and her mother Grimhilde, with a cliff-hanger ending. Even die-hard fans will find it difficult to enthuse over this walk on Disneys dark side. Far too many characters with similar titles, roles, and motivations cause the story to lumber along. The first half of the book consists of uninspiring dialogue and lengthy reflections on character backstories that do not provide much clarity or drama. Snow and Circe sit around for over 100 pages before they commit to any action. The backstory often seems written to explain away inconsistencies or fill in gaps rather than to entertain and inform. Exclamation-ridden dialogue reeks with tedious platitudes. The earnest effusions of Snow and Circe dont line up with the edgy exploration of the villainous Disney characters or the intended middle grade audience. VERDICT Avoid unless you have readers eager for every Disney book in existence.-Caitlin Augusta, Stratford Library Association, CT About the Author Serena Valentino has been weaving tales that combine mythos and guile for the past decade. ISBN: 978-1-368-01383-3 CHAPTER 1 Snow Ten years earlier Flakes fell softly, covering the already frozen castle grounds. When she stuck out her tongue, she could feel the flakes land on it. The little droplets of frozen water had the same name she did: Snow. Was she named for the snow or was the snow named for her? Thats what she wondered. She was a princess, so the weather could have been named after her. Then again, snow had been around a lot longer than she had. She was only seven. Whats that smell? her mother called out, pulling Snow from her thoughts. Snow flattened herself to the castle gardens wall so she wouldnt be seen and tried to stay quiet. Smells delicious and sweet ... Could there be a goose in the garden with me? Snow giggled. Mother, geese dont stay at the castle in the winter! They fly south. Everyone knows that. Everyone also knows that if you talk during hide-and-seek, you can be found faster. Her mother rounded a bend and pointed to her. Ive found you! Maybe she was biased, but Snow thought her mother was the most wonderful person in the world. Father said she looked just like her, and if that was true, Snow was pleased. Her mother had kind eyes the color of chestnuts and ebony hair, which, today, was pulled back in a loose chignon. She had removed her favorite crown - Mother didnt often wear it during games in the garden, especially in the winter months - but shed need to place it on her head when they went back inside in a few moments. Her mother had to get ready for the castles annual masquerade ball. Snow hated that she was too young to attend and had to take her supper in her room with her nursemaid. She so wished she could go to the party. She preferred her mothers company to any- one elses. Im going to get you! her mother sang, pulling up the fur-trimmed hood on her red velvet cloak. Snow particularly liked the gold buttons on this cloak. She would play with them when she was standing close to her mother during processions through the village streets. It loosened the but- tons and drove their tailor mad, but it made Snow feel safe and warm, like her mother did. She rarely ever wanted to leave her side - except during games of hide-and-seek. But you havent caught me yet! Snow cried, and she took off through the gardens maze of bushes. Her mother started to laugh. Snow wasnt sure which way to turn. Every path looked the same. The high, neatly trimmed green hedges blocked all but the view of the gray, snowy sky. Most of the flowers had been pruned fo...

Amazon Interview: Rick Riordan on Percy Jackson and the Olympians In our exclusive Q&A with Rick Riordan, bestselling author of the Percy Jackson and the Olympians series, learn about his inspiration for the character Percy Jackson, his long-time interest in Greek mythology, and more. : Since The Lightning Thief was published in 2005 it’s sold more than a million copies, and the four subsequent books in the Percy Jackson and the Olympians series have been blockbuster bestsellers among kids and adult readers alike. When you were writing the first story starring Percy Jackson, did you ever imagine it would become such a phenomenon? How has the success of the series affected your life? Rick Riordan: I had no expectations other than to make a good story for my older son, Haley. I had no idea it would become a book, much less a series, until he encouraged me to write down the story. I hoped the stories would get kids reading, but I never anticipated such exponential growth. It was not an overnight success, nor was it heavily marketed at the beginning. The Lightning Thief was passed around from kid to kid, teacher to teacher, parent to parent, and the series got bigger with each book. It really was a grassroots phenomenon. Still, I have trouble thinking in terms of millions. I measure success by anecdotes--the kid who told me he never liked books until he found The Lightning Thief, the parent who thanked me for turning her daughter into a reader, the teacher who said I turned her class around because they bonded over reading Percy Jackson every day. Thats what its all about for me. It hasnt changed our life much other than making me busier, but doing something I love! I still drive the same car. My kids go to the same schools. We try our best to keep things simple at home. : Youve said that you wrote this series for your son, Haley, who, like the books hero Percy, has been diagnosed with ADHD and dyslexia. How does Haley feel about being the inspiration for a bestselling series? Riordan: Both my sons are always my first audience. I read the manuscripts to them aloud to make sure they work for young readers. Both are proud, though being teenagers they are also embarrassed by the attention they get sometimes. They dont like it when classmates ask them to get my autograph. Haley likes to play down his importance in the genesis of the series, but I think hes enjoyed growing up with Percy, and I know it has increased his interest in writing. Recently he came into my office and announced the manuscript he is working on now has a bigger word count than mine! : Percys stories are based on Greek mythology--classic tales that have been passed down for thousands of years. What lessons can kids today learn from the ancient myths? Riordan: The stories have everything--romance, magic, mystery, action, and great characters. The Greek gods are our first superheroes. They have amazing powers, but they are also very human and subject to jealousy, envy, anger, etc. Kids especially respond to them because they are both powerful and accessible. Who wouldnt want to be the son or daughter of a Greek god? By reading about the struggles of gods and heroes, we learn a lot about being human, and thats something that hasnt changed over the millennia. : Have you ever visited Greece? What was it like? Riordan: I’ve been to both Italy and Greece, but...
