Book : The Centurions - Jean Larteguy
-Titulo Original : The Centurions-Fabricante : Penguin Classics-Descripcion Original: When The Centurions was first published in 1960, readers were riveted by the thrilling account of soldiers fighting for survival in hostile environments. They were equally transfixed by the chilling moral question the novel posed: how to fight when the “age of heroics is over.” As relevant today as it was half a century ago, The Centurions is a gripping military adventure, an extended symposium on waging war in a new global order, and an essential investigation of the ethics of counterinsurgency. Featuring a foreword by renowned military expert Robert D. Kaplan, this important wartime novel will again spark debate about controversial tactics in hot spots around the world. -Titulo Original : On The Road: The Original Scroll (Penguin Classics Deluxe Edition)-Fabricante : Penguin Classics-Descripcion Original: , published as Kerouac originally composed it IN THREE WEEKS in April of 1951, Jack Kerouac wrote his first full draft of On the Road—typed as a single-spaced paragraph on eight long sheets of tracing paper, which he later taped together to form a 120-foot scroll. A major literary event when it was published in Viking hardcover in 2007, this is the uncut version of an American classic—rougher, wilder, and more provocative than the official work that appeared, heavily edited, in 1957. This version, capturing a moment in creative history, represents the first full expression of Kerouac’s revolutionary aesthetic. -Titulo Original : The Life Of Samuel Johnson (Penguin Classics)-Fabricante : Penguin Classics-Descripcion Original: At the centre of a brilliant circle which included Burke, Reynolds, Garrick, Fanny Burney and even George III, Boswell captures the powerful, troubled and witty figure of Samuel Johnson, who towers above them all. Yet this is also an intimate picture of domestic life, which mingles the greatest talkers of a talkative age with the hero's humbler friends in a picture which is, before all things, humane. As a young man about London, James Boswell was obsessed by literature, and, on a fateful day in 1763, he attached himself with unswerving tenacity to the dominant literary figure of his age—the splendidly rotund, articulate, and humane Dr Samuel Johnson. What followed was the most famous of friendships between writers and the bais for the remarkable documentation contained in Boswell's Life of Samuel Johnson, the greatest and most compelling of all biographies. Readers trust the series to provide authoritative texts enhanced by introductions and notes by distinguished scholars and contemporary authors, as well as up-to-date translations by award-winning translators. Review By the Winner of the Nobel Prize in Literature About the Author Neftali Ricardo Reyes, whose pseudonym was to be Pablo Neruda, was born in Parral, Chile, in 1904. He grew up in the pioneer town of Temuco, briefly encountering Gabriela Mistral, who taught there for a time. In 1920 he went to Santiago to study, and the following year published his first collection of poetry,La Cancion de la Fiesta. A second collection, Crepusculario, brought him critical recognition; and in 1924 the hugely successful Veinte Poemas de Amor y una Cancion Desesperada appeared. From 1927 to 1943, Neruda lived abroad, serving as a diplomat in Rangoon, Colombo, Batavia, Singapore, Buenos Aires, Barcelona, Madrid, Paris, and Mexico City. This is the period that saw the publication of the first two volumes of his celebrated Residencia en la Tierra. He joined the Communist Party of Chile after World War II, was prosecuted as a subversive, and began an exile that took him to Russia, Eastern Europe, and China. Already the most renowned Latin American poet of his time, he returned to Chile in 1952. He died there in 1973, having just seen the fourth edition of his Obras Completas through the press. In receiving the Nobel Prize in 1971, he had said that the poet must achieve a balance “between solitude and solidarity, between feeling and action, between the intimacy of ones self, the intimacy of mankind, and the relevation of nature.”W. S. Merwin (translator; 1927-2019) published many highly regarded books of poems, for which he received a number of distinguished awards-the Pulitzer Prize (twice), the National Book Award, the Bollingen Prize, a Fellowship of the Academy of American Poets, and the Governors Award for Literature of the state of Hawaii among them. The U.S. poet laureate from 2010 to 2011, he translated widely from many languages, and his versions of classics such as The Poem of the Cid and The Song of Roland are standards.Cristina Garcia (introducer) is the author of Dreaming in Cuban, which was nominated for the National Book Award. Wind that topples her in a wave without spray and substance without weight, and leaning fires. Her mass of kisses breaks and sinks, assailed in the door of the summers wind. Book : The Solitudes A Dual-language Edition With Parallel..
-Titulo Original : The Solitudes: A Dual-Language Edition With Parallel Text (Penguin Classics)-Fabricante : Penguin Classics-Descripcion Original: An epic masterpiece of world literature, in a magnificent new translation by one if the most acclaimed translators of our time A towering figure of the Renaissance, Luis de Gongora pioneered poetic forms so radically different from the dominant aesthetic of his time that he was derided as the Prince of Darkness. The Solitudes, his magnum opus, is an intoxicatingly lush novel-in-verse that follows the wanderings of a shipwrecked man who has been spurned by his lover. Wrenched from civilization and its attendant madness, the desolate hero is transported into a natural world that is at once menacing and sublime. In this stunning edition Edith Grossman captures the breathtaking beauty of a work that represents one of the high points of poetic achievement in any language. For more than seventy years, Penguin has been the leading publisher of classic literature in the English-speaking world. With more than 1,700 titles, Penguin Classics represents a global bookshelf of the best works throughout history and across genres and disciplines. Readers trust the series to provide authoritative texts enhanced by introductions and notes by distinguished scholars and contemporary authors, as well as up-to-date translations by award-winning translators. Review “In her brilliant new translation of The Solitudes, Gongora’s impossible masterpiece, Edith Grossman gives us the full measure of both his genius and his weirdness.” - The New Criterion “Remarkably lucid . . . [Grossmans] lines often achieve a mesmerizing shimmer. . . . Reading Gongora is like traveling by hot-air balloon- youll get somewhere eventually, but all the pleasure is in the elevation (and occasional vertigo). . . . Its hard to imagine a better effort to capture [this] poem.” - The New York Times Book Review “Edith Grossman has surpassed even her magnificent version of Don Quixote by the far more difficult translation of Gongoras Solitudes. Few European poems are as sublime as The Solitudes, and Grossman illuminates this truth.” -Harold Bloom “This is true alchemy: to change the gold of one language into the gold of another. Such things are miracles: the baroque architecture of Gongoras poem has been given a shining equivalent in twenty-first-century English through the art of Edith Grossman.” -Cees Nooteboom “Edith Grossman has accomplished the formidable literary labor of translating into elegant, contemporary English Gongoras Soledades, the highest poetic achievement in the Spanish language.” -Roberto Gonzalez Echevarria, Yale University; author of Celestinas Brood “In Latin America, Gongora influenced much of the writing of Sor Juana Ines de la Cruz, of Borges, and (in lesser measure) of Gabriel Garcia Marquez. Above all, he is the origin and source of the great Cuban literature, that of Alejo Carpentier, Severo Sarduy, and Lezama Lima. In Spain he became the precursor of the best poets of the early twentieth century, from Garcia Lorca to Luis Cernuda. Perhaps, in the brilliant translation of Edith Grossman, he might have a similar effect.” -Alberto Manguel, from the Introduction “ The Solitudes is the most refreshing poem of seventeenth-century European literature, and Gongora is the seventeenth centurys Picasso, a rebel fountain that makes new water out of old. Edith Grossmans translation is the river that carries this new water across centuries and continents, and that allows us to drink of Gongoras genius.” -Joaquin Roses, University of Cordoba “Luis de Gongora was one of the great surprises of the Spanish Renaissance. He proved to be a poet of world stature, a figure comparable, say, to John Donne and George Herbert in English and a wildly imaginative and deeply rewarding poet of the senses. Edith Grossman has splendidly brought his Solitudes to life in English.” -Edward Hirsch About the Author Luis de Gongora (1561-1627) is among the most prominent figures of the Spanish Golden Age. Book : The Song Of The Cid (penguin Classics) A...
-Titulo Original : The Song Of The Cid (Penguin Classics) A Dual-Language Edition With Parallel Text-Fabricante : Penguin Classics-Descripcion Original: From a legendary translator: a magnificent new rendering of Spains national epic Venture into the heart of Islamic Spain in this vibrant, rollicking new translation of The Song of the Cid, the only surviving epic from medieval Spain. Banished from the court of King Alfonso, the noble warrior Rodrigo Diaz, know as the Cid, sets out from Castile to restore his name. In a series of battles, he earns wealth and honor for his men and his king, as well as fame and admiration for himself. But it is in rescuing his daughters from their ill-suited marriages that the Cid faces the ultimate challenge to the medieval heroic ideal. From Booklist Spain’s national epic relates the exploits of the warrior Rodrigo Diaz de Vivar (c. 1040-99) after Alfonso VI, king of Leon and Castile, banishes him for reasons unknown. In exile, he gathers an irresistible raiding party that conquers or exacts tribute from cities in its line of march. Because he sends a whopping portion of the proceeds to Alfonso, he gradually mollifies the monarch. Rodrigo’s campaigns are commonly represented as part of the Reconquista of Muslim-occupied Spain by Christian forces. But a Muslim lord is among Rodrigo’s most ardent supporters; only Muslims who resist are scorned; and Rodrigo’s honorific, el Cid, is a Hispanization of the Arabic sayyid-leader. The poem’s real mission, Maria Rosa Menocal’s invaluable introduction explains, is to portray the ideal Spanish hero: courageous, honest, generous, and unshakably loyal to the king. Raffel, a venerable translator of Western Europe’s earliest literary masterpieces, offers a sturdy, engaging version of a work far more fascinating than the Christian triumphalist propaganda piece it commonly has been assumed to be. --Ray Olson Review A powerful epic of loyalty and betrayal-and victory in battle. Burton Raffel . . . renders The Song of the Cid in a lively, dramatic yet informal style that conveys the heroic yet humorous tone of the original [and] memorably conveys the qualities that enliven the poem: a combination of heroic grandeur, humor and the careful observation of human failings. -The Wall Street Journal With a wonderfully informative introduction by Maria Rosa Menocal, this welcome translation by Burton Raffel gives us a Song of the Cid-the foundational medieval epic poem of the Iberian peninsula-that retains the excitement and fast pace of the original. -Edith Grossman In the spirit of Robert Fagles renditions of Homer, Burton Raffel makes a rich oral tradition immediate to us again. His Song of the Cid is a lesson in translation: in a way that seems effortless, it transports the reader to a past that at first sight appears closed. Along with his warhorse, Babieca, Mio Cid once more tests his knightly limits while showcasing the religious tensions of medieval Spain. The original text made available alongside the English turns this edition into a feast. -Ilan Stavans, author of Spanglish: The Making of a New American Language A brisk and instantly captivating new English version . . . Raffels rendition serves to remind readers of the straightaway power of oral narratives . . . and captures much of the genius of the poem. -Maria Rosa Menocal, Yale University (from the Introduction) An accurate, energetic, and much needed translation of The Song of the Cid. The rhyming and flow are elegant and measured. They beautifully reflect the dashing lines and excitement of the poem. A re...
