    Book : Wildoak - Harrington, C. C.

-Titulo Original : Wildoak-Fabricante : Scholastic Press-Descripcion Original: About the Author Christina grew up in the UK. She spent her summer holidays in Cornwall where she loved to climb trees and run barefoot along pebbly beaches. She loves the natural world and believes that stories, much like the roots of an ancient forest, are capable of connecting readers and listeners in essential ways. Wildoak is her first book. She graduated from Oxford University with a degree in English Literature and has since worked for a newspaper, taught literacy to children with learning differences and studied printmaking. She now lives in Maryland with her family and a dog who loves to eat manuscripts. You can learn more about her work at ccharrington Give the gift of connection this holiday season with this lushly illustrated story of a girl and a snow leopard and their unlikely friendship. Perfect for fans of Pax and Odder. * Nuanced and empowering. - Publishers Weekly, starred review * Memorably atmospheric. - Kirkus Reviews, starred review Maggie Stephenss stutter makes school especially hard. She will do almost anything to avoid speaking in class or calling attention to herself. So when her unsympathetic father threatens to send her away for so-called treatment, she reluctantly agrees to her mothers intervention plan: a few weeks in the fresh air of Wildoak Forest, visiting a grandfather she hardly knows. It is there, in an extraordinary twist of fate, that she encounters an abandoned snow leopard cub, an exotic gift to a wealthy Londoner that proved too wild to domesticate. But once the cubs presence is discovered by others, danger follows, and Maggie soon realizes that time is running out, not only for the leopard, but for herself and the forest as well. Told in alternating voices, Wildoak shimmers with beauty, compassion, and unforgettable storytelling as it explores the delicate interconnectedness of the human, animal, and natural worlds. Review Praise for Wildoak: * Themes of compassion and conservation form the heartbeat of Harringtons eloquent 1963 England-set debut...Both character arcs sparkle with life thanks to Harringtons poignant, immersive prose...nuanced and empowering. - Publishers Weekly, starred review * Harrington packs her memorably atmospheric debut with compelling issues, but her sharply felt portrayals of two vulnerable youngsters of different species bonding as they find their ways in hostile worlds will make the deepest impression. Tugs on ethical sensibilities and heartstrings with equal strength. - Kirkus Reviews, starred review Harrington humanizes Rumpus with compassion but not preciousness, inviting readers to acknowledge his wildness but still recognize his shared experiences with Maggie. Beyond the well-integrated themes of environmentalism and animal conservation, the resonating factor behind the story is Maggies connection to Rumpus, making this an easy readalike to Pennypackers Pax or Earles When the Sky Falls. - The Bulletin of the Center for Childrens Books This tender and hopeful story, with a whisper of magical realism, reminds the reader that everyone struggles with something. C.C. Harringtons prose is beautiful, and she writes with a deep affection for the natural world. Wildoak reads like a classic. I loved it. - Pam Muñoz Ryan, bestselling author of Esperanza Rising and the Newbery Honor Book Echo Wildoak is one of those novels that makes us believe the world may well be as mysterious and as lovely and as possible as we had hoped. Maybe we can speak to animals in ways we never anticipated, and maybe we can sense consciousness in places we had never imagined, and maybe deep hurts can be overcome--the hurts of war, of humiliation, of pride. The rambunctious and sometimes frightening and sometimes incredibly funny story of Maggie and Rumpus is a story of how we might connect more deeply and more humanly-and so it is a story of immense hope. Read it, and be enlarged! - Gary Schmidt, Newbery Honor winning au...

    Precio:  $69,529.00
    Expira: 20/01/2024

Book : Catching Fire (the Hunger Games) - Collins, Suzanne

-Titulo Original : Catching Fire (the Hunger Games)-Fabricante : Scholastic Press-Descripcion Original: From School Library Journal Starred Review. Gr 7 Up--Every year in Panem, the dystopic nation that exists where the U.S. used to be, the Capitol holds a televised tournament in which two teen tributes from each of the surrounding districts fight a gruesome battle to the death. In The Hunger Games, Katniss Everdeen and Peeta Mellark, the tributes from impoverished District Twelve, thwarted the Gamemakers, forcing them to let both teens survive. In this rabidly anticipated sequel, Katniss, again the narrator, returns home to find herself more the center of attention than ever. The sinister President Snow surprises her with a visit, and Katniss’s fear when Snow meets with her alone is both palpable and justified. Catching Fire is divided into three parts: Katniss and Peeta’s mandatory Victory Tour through the districts, preparations for the 75th Annual Hunger Games, and a truncated version of the Games themselves. Slower paced than its predecessor, this sequel explores the nation of Panem: its power structure, rumors of a secret district, and a spreading rebellion, ignited by Katniss and Peeta’s subversive victory. Katniss also deepens as a character. Though initially bewildered by the attention paid to her, she comes almost to embrace her status as the rebels’ symbolic leader. Though more of the story takes place outside the arena than within, this sequel has enough action to please Hunger Games fans and leaves enough questions tantalizingly unanswered for readers to be desperate for the next installment. Copyright © Reed Business Information, a division of Reed Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved. Against all odds, Katniss Everdeen has won the annual Hunger Games with fellow district tribute Peeta Mellark. But it was a victory won by defiance of the Capitol and their harsh rules. Katniss and Peeta should be happy. After all, they have just won for themselves and their families a life of safety and plenty. But there are rumors of rebellion among the subjects, and Katniss and Peeta, to their horror, are the faces of that rebellion. The Capitol is angry. The Capitol wants revenge. From Bookmarks Magazine Reviewers were happy to report that the Hunger Games trilogy is alive and well, and all looked forward to the third book in the series after this ones stunning conclusion. But they disagreed over whether Catching Fire was as good as the original book Hunger Games or should be viewed as somewhat of a sophomore slump. Several critics who remained unconvinced by Katnisss romantic dilemma made unfavorable comparisons to the human-vampire-werewolf love triangle in Stephenie Meyers Twilight series. But most reviewers felt that Catching Fire was still a thrill because Collins replicated her initial success at balancing action, violence, and heroism in a way that will enthrall young readers without giving them (too many) nightmares. Review Praise for The Hunger GamesA violent, jarring, speed-rap of a novel that generates nearly constant suspense. . . . Review Against all odds, Katniss Everdeen has survived the Hunger Games twice. But now that shes made it out of the bloody arena alive, shes still not safe. The Capitol is angry. The Capitol wants revenge. Who do they think should pay for the unrest? Katniss. And whats worse, President Snow has made it clear that no one else is safe either. Not Katnisss family, not her friends, not the people of District 12. Powerful and haunting, this thrilling final installment of Suzanne Collinss groundbreaking The Hunger Games trilogy promises to be one of the most talked about books of the year. A Q&A with Suzanne Collins, Author of Mockingjay (The Final Book of The Hunger Games) Q: You have said from the start that The Hunger Games story was intended as a trilogy. Did it actually end the way you planned it from the beginning? A: Very much so. While I didnt know every detail, of course, the arc of the story from gladiator game, to revolution, to war, to the eventual outcome remained constant throughout the writing process. Q: We understand you worked on the initial screenplay for a film to be based on The Hunger Games. What is the biggest difference between writing a novel and writing a screenplay? A: There were several significant differences. Time, for starters. When youre adapting a novel into a two-hour movie you cant take everything with you. The story has to be condensed to fit the new form. Then theres the question of how best to take a book told in the first person and present tense and transform it into a satisfying dramatic experience. In the novel, you never leave Katniss for a second and are privy to all of her thoughts so you need a way to dramatize her inner world and to make it possible for other characters to exist outside of her company. Finally, theres the challenge of how to present the violence while still maintaining a PG-13 rating so that your core audience can view it. A lot of things are acceptable on a page that wouldnt be on a screen. But how certain moments are depicted will ultimately be in the directors hands. Q: Are you able to consider future projects while working on The Hunger Games, or are you immersed in the world you are currently creating so fully that it is too difficult to think about new ideas? A: I have a few seeds of ideas floating around in my head but--given that much of my focus is still on The Hunger Games--it will probably be awhile before one fully emerges and I can begin to develop it. Q: The Hunger Games is an annual televised event in which one boy and one girl from each of the twelve districts is forced to participate in a fight-to-the-death on live TV. What do you think the appeal of reality television is--to both kids and adults? A: Well, theyre often set up as games and, like sporting events, theres an interest in seeing who wins. The contestants are usually unknown, which makes them relatable. Sometimes they have very talented people performing. Then theres the voyeuristic thrill-watching people being humiliated, or brought to tears, or suffering physically--which I find very disturbing. Theres also the potential for desensitizing the audience, so that when they see real tragedy playing out on, say, the news, it doesnt have the impact it should. Q: If you were forced to compete in the Hunger Games, what do you think your special skil...

Book: Crow Call - Lois Lowry (tapa dura) en ingles

-Titulo Original : Crow Call-Fabricante : Scholastic Press-Descripcion Original: Two-time Newbery medalist Lois Lowry has crafted a beautiful picture book about the power of longing and the importance of reconnection between a girl and her father in post-WWII America. This is the story of young Liz, her father, and their strained relationship. Dad has been away at WWII for longer than she can remember, and they begin their journey of reconnection through a hunting shirt, cherry pie, tender conversation, and the crow call. This allegorical story shows how, like the birds gathering above, the relationship between the girl and her father is graced with the chance to fly. From School Library Journal Starred Review. Kindergarten-Grade 4 Based on the reminiscence of a day in 1945, Lowrys nostalgic story has appeal that will resonate with 21st-century children. Lizzies father has just returned from serving in World War II and shes a bit shy even though shes excited about spending the day with him. They are going to hunt crows that are eating the farmers crops. The eight-year-old is warmly dressed in a mans plaid wool shirt that she had admired in a store window and her father bought for her even though it comes down to her knees. After an early diner breakfast of her favorite cherry pie, they head toward the woods. Being in charge of the crow call, a whistle intended to lure prey to the hunter, Lizzie is impressed with the number of birds she entices, yet feels uncomfortable because they are about to be killed. However, her father never raises his rifle; he simply enjoys watching his enthralled daughter and the multitude of birds that have heeded her call. Remarkable, atmospheric illustrations reveal the subdued, cool autumn colors of crunchy dried grass, softly hued sky, and dark leafless trees. The memory of a treasured day spent with a special person will resonate with readers everywhere. Maryann H.
