Book : The Surprising Power Of A Good Dumpling - Chim, Wai

-Titulo Original : The Surprising Power Of A Good Dumpling-Fabricante : Scholastic Press-Descripcion Original: An authentic novel about growing up in an Asian immigrant family with a mother who is suffering from a debilitating mental illness. Anna Chiu has her hands full. When shes not looking after her brother and sister or helping out at her fathers restaurant, shes taking care of her mother, whose debilitating mental illness keeps her in bed most days. Her fathers new delivery boy, Rory, is a welcome distraction and even though she knows that things arent right at home, shes starting to feel like she could be a normal teen. But when her mother finally gets out of bed, things go from bad to worse. And as her mothers condition worsens, Anna and her family question everything they understand about themselves and each other. The Surprising Power of a Good Dumpling is a heart-wrenching, true-to-life exploration through the often neglected crevices of culture, mental illness, and family. Its strong themes are balanced by a beautiful romance making it a feel-good, yet important read. From School Library Journal Gr 9 Up-Life isnt easy for Anna Chiu. She has to take care of her younger brother and sister while her father is busy working at the familys Chinese restaurant, and her mother cant get out of bed. With all the responsibility, Anna feels like she cant be a typical teen, until she meets Rory. He is hired as a delivery boy for the restaurant, and the two bond on the long rides home. When Annas mom finally gets out of bed, things appear to look up, but actually go from bad to worse. Tackling family, relationships, culture, and mental health, this book is a fast-paced and fabulous read. The story takes place in Australia and features Anna and her Chinese Australian family. Rory and several other characters are white, and the other restaurant employees and some of Annas peers are of Asian descent. This book shines a light on mental illness and how it affects not only the person who lives with it, but also their loved ones. Some aspects of the novel are on the darker side, such as learning Annas mom used to hit her daughters with a feather duster, but they are handled gently. Some readers may be unfamiliar with the Australian and Cantonese terminology, but the lack of understanding wont take away from the story. VERDICT A good addition to any collection, but especially for those looking to diversify it.-Amanda Borgia, Uniondale P.L., NY?(c) Copyright 2011. Book : The Great Destroyers - Richmond, Caroline Tung

-Titulo Original : The Great Destroyers-Fabricante : Scholastic Press-Descripcion Original: Blood, sweat, and death. Welcome to the Pax Games. Jo Linden was born into a world where wars are won with giant mechanical soldiers and the nuclear bomb was never invented. Yet the Cold War still rages, and international rivalries between democracy and communism are now fought at the Pax Games, an Olympic-style competition that pits young pilots of mechas against each other. The USSR has beaten the US in nearly every game since its inception, and in the 1963 Games, the US is desperate for a win. Because its more than just the Games at stake. Premier Khrushchev will be attending, and after, he and President Kennedy are slated to sign a peace accord stabilizing the war in Vietnam-and their volatile relationship. Raised in her fathers mecha repair shop, Jo knows more than anyone about piloting. Shes also the most unlikely pick for Team USA since shes a virtually unknown fighter. So when shes invited at the last minute to compete, she jumps at it. This could be the only chance to save her familys home from debt collectors. All eyes are on Jo from the moment she arrives. But as fighters start dying in the arena, its suddenly clear that its more than the usual Pax Games, and Jo finds herself drawn into a deadly political plot. And if she cant figure out the truth, it might mean the annihilation of everything. In a global arms race between superpowers, playing out in violent games that only humanity could create, comes a chilling story of clashing titans, ruthless competition, freedom, and the girl caught in the middle of it all. From School Library Journal Gr 8 Up-In this alternative history, where there are no nuclear weapons, the United States and USSR are still locked in Cold War. The weapon of choice for all nations is the mecha, large mechanical soldiers, that are also used for entertainment. Young mecha pilots fight in a caged ring for the glory of their nations at the Pax Games. The USSR has beaten the U.S., but young mecha pilot Jo Linden hopes to change that. Most dont take her seriously but Jo is determined to take the champion title for her country. However, the Pax Games arent free from political intrigue, as Jo soon discovers that they are just another global chess match between two superpowers, and she might be a pawn. The mecha soldiers are an intriguing and fun premise expertly blended into real American historical events. Richmond expertly draws readers in with protagonist Jo, a white-passing, mixed-race Chinese American woman trying to be accepted in a white, male-dominated sport. Despite being alternative history, the prejudices Jo experiences are real and explored in depth. Jo must constantly play the part of the ideal American Girl, when she is not. Part of the plot includes international politics that some readers may find distracting from Jos experiences. Overall, readers will find the plot engaging and thrilling. Perfect for established fans of Richmond and fans of Andrea Tang and Axie Oh. Cole St. Clair has come to California for one reason: to get back Isabel Culpeper. She fled from his damaged, drained life, and damaged and drained it even more. He doesnt just want her. He needs her. lost. Isabel is trying to build herself a life in Los Angeles. Its not really working. She can play the game as well as all the other fakes. But whats the point? What is there to win? sinner. Cole and Isabel share a past that never seemed to have a future. They have the power to love each other and the power to tear each other apart. The only thing for certain is that they cannot let go. From Booklist Teen ice-queen Isabel is shocked when former rock-god Cole turns up in Los Angeles saying he is drug-free and there for her. He is also producing his next album and starring in a popular reality show, notorious for pushing its rehabbed stars back over the edge. Two secondary characters from the Shiver series take turns narrating this sweet and sexy love story set in an L.A. faintly reminiscent of Francesca Lia Block’s Weetzie Bat books. The characterizations of Isabel and Cole are so solid that it seems Stiefvater is transcribing them rather than creating them, and minor characters are just as deftly (if not as deeply) drawn. Despite this, there are stereotypes aplenty when it comes to the reality show and references to Cole’s former life, but they work well enough to shorthand the background info and keep the focus on the two lovers. Bits of backstory are provided, and after a slightly confusing start, this one could stand on its own. But although shes engaged to the prince, Twylla isnt exactly a member of the court. Shes the executioner. As the Goddess embodied, Twylla instantly kills anyone she touches. Each month, shes taken to the prison and forced to lay her hands on those accused of treason. No one will ever love a girl with murder in her veins. Even the prince, whose royal blood supposedly makes him immune to Twyllas fatal touch, avoids her company. But then a new guard arrives, a boy whose easy smile belies his deadly swordsmanship. And unlike the others, hes able to look past Twyllas executioner robes and see the girl, not the Goddess. Yet Twyllas been promised to the prince, and knows what happens to people who cross the queen. However, a treasonous secret is the least of Twyllas problems. The queen has a plan to destroy her enemies, a plan that requires a stomach-churning, unthinkable sacrifice. Will Twylla do what it takes to protect her kingdom? Or will she abandon her duty in favor of a doomed love? From School Library Journal Gr 7 Up-Seventeen-year-old Twylla has a gift and a curse as the embodiment of a goddess on Earth: she is worshipped and she can kill men in seconds with the briefest of touches. Twyllas mother is a Sin Eater, one who eats symbolic foods of the deceased persons sins at their grave site; Twylla is set to pursue this path until the Queen of Lormere takes her from her home to become the goddess Daunen Embodied. Every month, the teen ingests a poisonous substance that reinforces her position as the goddesss personification and the kingdoms executioner, and every month Twylla becomes more isolated. Her only hope of escape lies with her future marriage to Lormeres prince, Merek. Possible deliverance comes in the form of a new guard who joins her service-Lief is different from the others. He does not shrink away as his mistress draws near; he engages in conversation with her and asks questions. As the protagonist grows closer to Merek and Lief, she becomes more aware of how truly trapped she is in her role with the Queen-and how much she will have to sacrifice to break free. Salisburys concept is not new: Tahereh Mafis Shatter Me (HarperCollins, 2011) and Kristin Cashores Graceling (Houghton Harcourt, 2008) have similar heroines with tactile killing powers. However, her luscious world-building and mythology make this fantasy a worthy read. Twylla is strong and sensible, and teen fans of royal intrigue titles will be rooting for her.-Amanda C. -Titulo Original : Grenade-Fabricante : Scholastic Press-Descripcion Original: Here it is! The hugely anticipated follow-up to Gratzs NYT bestselling, critically acclaimed phenomenon REFUGEE. This is another searing and heart-pounding look at kids making their way through war.A New York Times bestseller! Its 1945, and the world is in the grip of war.Hideki lives on the island of Okinawa, near Japan. When WWII crashes onto his shores, Hideki is drafted into the Blood and Iron Student Corps to fight for the Japanese army. He is handed a grenade and a set of instructions: Dont come back until youve killed an American soldier.Ray, a young American Marine, has just landed on Okinawa. He doesnt know what to expect -- or if hell make it out alive. He just knows that the enemy is everywhere.Hideki and Ray each fight their way across the island, surviving heart-pounding ambushes and dangerous traps. But when the two of them collide in the middle of the battle, the choices they make in that instant will change everything. From the acclaimed author of Refugee comes this high-octane story of how fear can tear us apart, and how hope can tie us back together. From School Library Journal Gr 5 Up-In 1945, as the U.S. army neared mainland Japan, the Imperial Japanese Army evacuated its elite troops from Okinawa and left behind a force meant to slow down the Americans in the bloodiest way possible. They recruited the native Okinawans into this army, including teens like Hideki, one of the two narrators of this gripping World War II novel. As Hideki takes his two grenades (one to kill U.S. soldiers and one to kill himself), he is fated to come across the other narrator, a young American soldier, Ray. Based on research and firsthand accounts the author heard while in Okinawa, history comes violently to life in this character-driven, fictionalized account. The battle details are accurate and the characters and the growing sense of the battles futility are well drawn and poignant. There is some offensive contemporaneous language referring to Japanese people used within the narrative, which is explained in a note at the beginning and in greater detail in the detailed historical note at the end. While this is a chilling, realistic depiction of war, the violence is not glorified or graphically described. VERDICT An excellent World War II novel, best suited for mature readers who can handle the sensitive content and brutal realities of wartime.-Elizabeth Nicolai, Anchorage Public Library, AK?(c) Copyright 2011. From School Library Journal PreS-Gr 1-When an inquisitive caterpillar sees a bunch of his friends climb up a tree, he questions their unusual behavior. They explain that it is time to metamorphosize. Using dialogue, Burach concisely walks readers through the metamorphosis process, following a repeating question and answer formula. Book : The Marvels - Brian Selznick

-Titulo Original : The Marvels-Fabricante : Scholastic Press-Descripcion Original: Dont miss Selznicks other novels in words and pictures, The Invention of Hugo Cabret and Wonderstruck, which together with The Marvels, form an extraordinary thematic trilogy!A breathtaking new voyage from Caldecott Medalist Brian Selznick. Two stand-alone stories--the first in nearly 400 pages of continuous pictures, the second in prose--create a beguiling narrative puzzle. The journey begins at sea in 1766, with a boy named Billy Marvel. After surviving a shipwreck, he finds work in a London theatre. There, his family flourishes for generations as brilliant actors until 1900, when young Leontes Marvel is banished from the stage.Nearly a century later, runaway Joseph Jervis seeks refuge with an uncle in London. Albert Nightingales strange, beautiful house, with its mysterious portraits and ghostly presences, captivates Joseph and leads him on a search for clues about the house, his family, and the past.A gripping adventure and an intriguing invitation to decipher how the two stories connect, The Marvels is a loving tribute to the power of story from an artist at the vanguard of creative innovation. From School Library Journal Gr 4-6-This brilliant journey through time in words and pictures is also a story of a theatrical family and their fortunes. This heavy tome opens to tell of one family, the Marvels, from 1766 to 1900 as their connection to the Royal Theatre in London begins and perhaps ends. In the first half of the book, all of this complex history is vividly conveyed through illustrations, with minor hints from playbills, cards, and letters that appear as part of the art. Selznicks ability to convey the passing of time and connections among characters is remarkable. Characters appear, shine, and disappear throughout the years, but certain motifs recur no matter where the spotlight is focused. The second portion of the story is conveyed entirely in text, building on the same themes but taking place in 1990 in a very different London, where the echoes from the past are particularly embodied in 13-year-old Joseph, a boarding school runaway searching for his uncles house. He soon meets Uncle Albert, who seems less interested in getting to know his nephew than in the preservation of an anachronistic Victorian house which is more museum than home. The echoes from the earlier history are haunting, requiring Joseph to delve into the secrets of Uncle Albert and of the house without giving away his own. Selznick ends with a satisfying section of illustrations that embody the maxim of this family, You either see it or you dont. VERDICT Complex, entertaining, and full of gorgeous art and writing, this is a powerhouse of a book.-Carol A. Book : Out Of The Dust (newbery Medal Book) - Hesse, Karen

-Titulo Original : Out Of The Dust (newbery Medal Book)-Fabricante : Scholastic Press-Descripcion Original: Acclaimed author Karen Hesses Newbery Medal-winning novel-in-verse explores the life of fourteen-year-old Billie Jo growing up in the dust bowls of Oklahoma.Dust piles up like snow across the prairie. . . .A terrible accident has transformed Billie Jos life, scarring her inside and out. Her mother is gone. Her father cant talk about it. And the one thing that might make her feel better -- playing the piano -- is impossible with her wounded hands. To make matters worse, dust storms are devastating the family farm and all the farms nearby. While others flee from the dust bowl, Billie Jo is left to find peace in the bleak landscape of Oklahoma -- and in the surprising landscape of her own heart. Review Like the Oklahoma dust bowl from which she came, 14-year-old narrator Billie Jo writes in sparse, free-floating verse. In this compelling, immediate journal, Billie Jo reveals the grim domestic realities of living during the years of constant dust storms: That hopes--like the crops--blow away in the night like skittering tumbleweeds. That trucks, tractors, even Billie Jos beloved piano, can suddenly be buried beneath drifts of dust. Perhaps swallowing all that grit is what gives Billie Jo--our strong, endearing, rough-cut heroine--the stoic courage to face the death of her mother after a hideous accident that also leaves her piano-playing hands in pain and permanently scarred. Meanwhile, Billie Jos silent, windblown father is literally decaying with grief and skin cancer before her very eyes. When she decides to flee the lingering ghosts and dust of her homestead and jump a train west, she discovers a simple but profound truth about herself and her plight. There are no tight, sentimental endings here--just a steady ember of hope that brightens Karen Hesses exquisitely written and mournful tale. Hesse won the 1998 Newbery Award for this elegantly crafted, gut-wrenching novel, and her fans wont want to miss The Music of Dolphins or Letters from Rifka. (Ages 9 and older) --Gail Hudson From School Library Journal Grade 5 Up. After facing loss after loss during the Oklahoma Dust Bowl, Billie Jo begins to reconstruct her life. A triumphant story, eloquently told through prose-poetry. Copyright 1997 Reed Business Information, Inc. From Kirkus Reviews Billie Jo tells of her life in Oklahoma during the Dust Bowl: Her mother dies after a gruesome accident caused by her fathers leaving a bucket of kerosene near the stove; Billie Jo is partially responsible--fully responsible in the eyes of the community--and sustains injuries that seem to bring to a halt her dreams of playing the piano. Finding a way through her grief is not made easier by her taciturn father, who went on a drinking binge while Billie Joes mother, not yet dead, begged for water. Told in free-verse poetry of dated entries that span the winter of 1934 to the winter of 1935, this is an unremittingly bleak portrait of one corner of Depression-era life. In Billie Jo, the only character who comes to life, Hesse (The Music of Dolphins, 1996, etc.) presents a hale and determined heroine who confronts unrelenting misery and begins to transcend it. The poem/novel ends with only a trace of hope; there are no pat endings, but a glimpse of beauty wrought from brutal reality. (Fiction. 9-12) -- Copyright ©1997, Kirkus Associates, LP. Jax Opus can use his color-changing eyes to make people do things they dont want to do. (Only his color-blind best friend, Tommy, seems immune.) At first, Jax doesnt know what hes doing -- temporarily hypnotizing friends, foes, and strangers. But then his power pushes things way too far, and his secret isnt a secret any longer.Soon Jax finds himself meeting Dr. Elias Mako, who wants him to join a special institution that will teach him how to use his powers. From School Library Journal Gr 5-8-Twelve-year-old Jackson Opus knows that he is a little different and that people sometimes act odd around him. But when his New York City bus driver suddenly starts driving like a madman and his psychiatrist tries to jump out the window, Jax thinks its more than a little strange. Turns out, Jax is a hypnotist, a person capable of capturing others minds and bending them to suggestions. Its not an easy power to master. Fortunately, Jax is taken under the wing of Dr. Elias Mako of the Sentia Institute, where he, along with others with similar powers, learns how to control his ability. But with great power comes great responsibility, and his gift makes him a ripe target for those who want to use him to “bend” others. Can Jax determine who is friend and who is foe in a world in which his own mind can be used against him? Korman delivers a quick and thrilling adventure with accessible characters and a familiar urban landscape. While the overall story and world-building run thin at times, readers looking for an action-filled plot will enjoy this contemporary story of psychic powers and betrayal. The dramatic tone may be unexpected for fans who know Korman for high jinks and humor, but it should be a good fit for fans of his “Titanic” trilogy (Scholastic).-Stephanie Whelan, New York Public Library?(c) Copyright 2013. The pretty girl looks his way. Teachers love him, and for a mediocre athlete, he has got a magic touch on the basketball court. But soon Jax discovers that it’s not just good luck; rather, he has an innate ability to hypnotize those around him. When his skill is discovered by another hypnotist at a vaudeville-style show, he is recruited into a secretive training program. Jax is skeptical at first, but then he decides to make the most of his skill-until he realizes that Dr. Mako and his trainees at the Sentia Institute have plots far more nefarious and powerful than Jax’s dream of getting an extra serving of fries out of the cafeteria ladies.
