Book : Get Up, Stand Up (preschool Music Book, Multicultural

-Titulo Original : Get Up, Stand Up: (Preschool Music Book, Multicultural Books For Kids, Diversity Books For Toddlers, Bob Marley Childrens Books) (Bob Marley By Chronicle Books)-Fabricante : Chronicle Books-Descripcion Original: The third picture book adaptation of one of Bob Marleys beloved songs that has a timely message for children: To counter injustice, lift others up with kindness and courage. A heartfelt and meaningful book that brings Bob Marleys music to life in a new way: As a young girl goes on with her day in school, she comes across several instances of teasing and intimidation. But with loving action and some help from her friends, shes able to make things right for herself and others. * This cute childrens book includes the impactful lyrics of Bob Marleys song Get Up, Stand Up that has inspired millions of listeners around the world with messages of peace, love, and truth * Written by Cedella Marley, Bob Marleys daughter, who has dedicated herself to keeping her fathers message and memory alive * With exuberant pictures by John Jay Cabuay accompanying Marleys iconic lyrics, Get Up, Stand Up is a vibrant testament to the power we all have to make a difference Fans of Every Little Thing and One Love will also love the lyrical rhythm and the powerful message of love, peace, and harmony presented in Get Up, Stand Up. . * Great family and classroom read-aloud book * Appeals to readers of all ages with the light-hearted tone and cheerful illustrations * Books for kids ages 6-8 * Childrens books for early elementary students From School Library Journal K-Gr 2-In this anti-bullying story, a group of kids overcome their problems by working together and supporting each other. Much like Marleys other childrens book adaptations, nearly all the lyrics of Bob Marleys original song have been changed to make them more relatable to children. Though the message of standing up for your rights still rings true, the correlation between the words and the pictures doesnt seem as smooth. The new lyrics (They dont speak the truth and only want their greedy wish) accompany a picture of two kids bullying a girl for wearing cat ears, which doesnt necessarily describe this very real scenario. In another instance, four kids only thinking for what they care are dancing while other kids look on in confusion. These kids later get to dance as well, but its unclear what happened and how the conflict was resolved. Artwork overall is colorful and bright, which makes the story easy to follow. The variety of ethnicities depicted reflects the universal nature of the original song. VERDICT An addition to a now crowded field of anti-bullying picture books.-Peter Blenski, Hartland Public Library, WI Review A message of empowerment and unity . . . Joyous.-Kirkus ReviewsCarrying on her fathers legacy of banding people together in solidarity, Cedella Marley adds to her collection of picture book adaptations of the singer-songewriters beloved work with this new installment. An energetic readaloud that promises to pump up young dissenters and peacemakers.-Publishers Weekly About the Author Cedella Marley, the eldest child of Bob Marley, is also the author of One Love and Three Little Birds and performs with the Melody Makers internationally. She lives in Miami, Florida.Bob Marley, a Jamaican singer-songwriter, is one of the 20th centurys most important and influential entertainment icons, and his lifestyle and music continue to inspire new generations as his legacy lives on through his music.John Jay Cabuay received his MFA in illustration from the Fashion Institute of Technology, and his illustrations have graced the covers of newspapers, magazines, and books worldwide. It includes the third of three books in the Ivy and Bean series. Author Annie Barrows talks about her award-winning Ivy Bean series: One of the big problems of being a kid is that your parents often try to make you play with people you dont really like. My parents were forever trying to get me to like the kids of their friends. These kids were often weird. I didnt want to play with them. It was a problem. Ivy and Bean are very different: Bean is loud and wild and goofy. She loves to be involved in games and poke her nose in other peoples business. Ivy is quiet and full of ideas. She spends most of her time learning how to be a witch. Each girl thinks the other one is weird. Each girl thinks she could never be friends with the other. Ivy and Bean Boxed Set: Books 7-9 includes: Book 7: Ivy Bean: Whats the Big Idea? Wouldnt it be cool if Ivy and Bean found the solution to global warming? Wouldnt it be especially cool if the solution was shimmering pink goo in a test-tube and all the famous scientists in the world wished they had thought of it first? Its Science Fair time at Emerson School, and all the kids are supposed to find a way to cool down the earth. Some kids are planting trees. Some kids are holding their breath for a very, very long time. Some kids are doing interesting things with vacuum cleaners. But what should Ivy and Bean do? Something with explosions? Never mind what for. Dont even ask. Okay, its for cheese. Two bags of lowfat Belldeloon cheese in a special just-for-you serving size. Dont ask why. But ten dollars is a lot of money. How are Bean and Ivy going to make ten dollars? Should they babysit? Eww, diapers. No. Should they wash the car? Theyre not allowed to touch the car. No. Should they write a newspaper about their neighbors and sell it? Yes. Great idea-and easy too! All Ivy and Bean have to do is snoop around Pancake Court and gets some news. Its very interesting what you can find out if you look in your neighbors windows. Its even more interesting when the neighbors read about it in the newspaper. Book : Cinderella - K. Y. Craft

-Titulo Original : Cinderella-Fabricante : Chronicle Books-Descripcion Original: This brilliant edition of a timeless story is sure to become the favorite of a generation. Readers young and old will be enchanted by the vision and mastery of Kinuko Y. Crafts luminous paintings, inspired by the lavish artwork of late seventeenth-century France and embellished with extraordinary borders and ornamentation. Rich with radiant color and astonishing detail, here is a dream come true for anyone who has ever believed in living happily ever after. From Publishers Weekly As lavish as Crafts (King Midas and the Golden Touch) previous works, this retold fairy tale abounds with ornamental detail. Inspired by the opulent styles of 17th- and 18th-century France, the paintings are confections of luxurious clothing, densely vegetated woods and regally appointed ballrooms. A number of the pictures are breathtaking: Crafts painting of Cinderellas ornate gold carriage flying through the sky is as romantic as any fairy-tale aficionado could wish for. Elaborate initials introduce the narrative on each spread, and the text almost always faces full-page illustrations. The story, adapted from Arthur Rackhams and Andrew Langs versions, contains pleasing touches as well as a moral. For example, Cinderella and the prince first meet when Cinderella nurses a lame bluebird in the forest; this same bluebird later becomes the fairy godmother. When the glass slipper fits Cinderella, the prince says, How I knew that day in the woods that you were indeed special, but I should have fully recognized that heart whether clothed in rags or regalia. While this is not the most childlike version of Cinderella, it may be among the most sumptuous. All ages. (Sept.) Copyright 2000 Reed Business Information, Inc. From School Library Journal PreSchool-Grade 4-Craft retains some of Perraults formality and many of his story elements in this sumptuous rendition of the oft-told tale. An introductory note points to sources that include The Arthur Rackham Fairy Book, Andrew Langs The Blue Fairy Book, and the Grimms Aschenputtel, in which a bird grants the wish. Craft incorporates the creature at key points throughout her tale. Early on, a bluebirds injury creates a reason for Cinderella to linger in the forest, whereupon she encounters the prince in her unadorned state. Later, it is transformed into a Maxfield Parrish-inspired fairy godmother. Finally, the prince compares his guests sweet voice to the warbler that sings at his window. While pulling some visual details from the Art Nouveau tradition-most notably the symbolic gilt peacocks in the covers border-the oil-over-watercolor scenes are mostly reminiscent of French 17th and 18th-century paintings. A consummate artist, Craft conveys the sheen of pearls, the delicacy of lace, the volume of period fashion. She controls the pace with one-page compositions (faced with bordered, illuminated text) interspersed with wordless double spreads at climactic moments. Groups or individuals will enjoy contrasting this offering to Brian Pinkneys artwork for Robert San Soucis Cendrillon (S & S, 1998) or Alan Schroeders Smoky Mountain Rose (Puffin, 2000). Make room for this one. Wendy Lukehart, Dauphin County Library, Harrisburg, PA Copyright 2000 Reed Business Information, Inc. About the Author K. Y. Book : Every Person In New York - Polan, Jason

-Titulo Original : Every Person In New York-Fabricante : Chronicle Books-Descripcion Original: Jason Polan is on a mission to draw every person in New York, from cab drivers to celebrities. He draws people eating at Taco Bell, admiring paintings at the Museum of Modern Art, and sleeping on the subway. With a foreword by Kristen Wiig, Every Person in New York, Volume 1 collects thousands of Polans energetic drawings in one chunky book. As full as a phone book and as invigorating as a walk down a bustling New York street, this is a new kind of love letter to a beloved city and the people who live there. Review “In 2008, Jason Polan set himself the challenge of drawing every person in New York. Like Sufjan Stevens’s aim to make 50 albums of the United States, it was essentially an impossible project, but what’s come out of it is undoubtedly a success. The artist and Cut collaborator has drawn an impressive 36,000-plus people to date, and those sketches are all compiled in Every Person in New York, along with a foreword by Kristen Wiig. It’s out on August 18, with a key addendum to its title: Volume 1. Thumb through a copy to find sketches and scrawled captions of New Yorkers waiting in line, subway riders, famous faces, and, if you’ve been to New York City in the last seven years, maybe even yourself.” - New York magazine “In 2008, illustrator Jason Polan set out to capture the enormous human poetics compressed in Gotham’s geographic smallness by drawing every person in the city. The first seven years of this ongoing project, totaling drawings of 30,000 people, are now collected in Every Person in New York-a marvelous tome of Polan’s black-and-white line drawings, colored in with the intense aliveness of a city where, as E.B. White wrote more than half a century earlier, ‘wonderful events are taking place every minute.’ What emerges is a kind of poetry-fragmentary glimpses of ideas and images, commanded by an internal rhythm to paint a complete whole of this human hive.” - Brain Pickings ”Jason Polan’s drawings exude, in unbroken but flexible lines, the momentum of a Manhattan streetscape with only brief moments of stillness. Those pauses can last minutes or over an hour, enough time for fully textured, impressionistic portraits. But more often Mr. Polan’s drawings are of scenes that pass in seconds: a father ordering hot dogs for his stubborn children, or Diane Keaton trying to hail a cab.” - The New York Times “This digest of sketches brings to life the everyday moments of New Yorkers and finds a spark of excitement in the sometimes-banal shuffle of city living.” - Monocle magazine “In 400 pages and 30,000 people, Jason Polan presents a big-hearted and humanistic picture of the city. He draws at museums and on the subway, he draws his friends in loving detail and celebrities in unposed real-time situations, like Yoko Ono walking up the block away from him.… Getting to flip through years of his work at home, freed from seeing it on , and being able to look as closely and for as long as I like, has been one of the chief pleasures of my summer, which is all a long way to say: I think you will like this book.” - Lucky Peach About the Author Jason Polan is an illustrator whose work has been published in the New Yorker, Metropolis magazine, and in the New York Times as part of a weekly column. He has exhibited work internationally and has also drawn every piece of art in the Museum of Modern Art, twice. He lives in New York, of course...

Toward the end of their careers they were tasked with creating character designs and concept art for upcoming projects. This book offers generous examples of their work, from pen-and-ink sketches to full color renderings. Its a joy to leaf through these pages and appreciate their artistry. - Leonard Maltin, film criticA strength of this book is that it does focus on the films through the lens of Anderson and Shaws work, diving deep into their entire careers at Disney. It is a biography of them as much as it is a book of art, and I really appreciate the attention to detail. Half of the fun of books like this is following the process of sketch to screen, and by making the men behind the drawings very real, it really adds to the story.-Cultured Vultures Holiday Gift Pick In the 1970s and 80s, the two artists brought their creative talents to bear on cherished films such as Robin Hood and The Rescuers.
