About the Author Miranda James is the New York Times bestselling author of the Cat in the Stacks Mysteries and the Southern Ladies Mysteries. Excerpt. © Reprinted by permission. All rights reserved. One I hadnt been down this road in over four decades, not since shortly before my paternal grandfather died. New houses adorned the landscape, taking the place of the fields of cotton and soybeans I remembered, among other crops, and I saw fewer cows and horses. To my surprise, I did espy several goats in one pasture. My goal lay only three miles ahead, I thought, not completely trusting my rusty memory. Well be there soon, I said as I glanced over my shoulder at my passenger in the backseat. Diesel, my Maine Coon cat, chirped in response. He enjoyed riding in the car, even if we were headed to the veterinarians clinic. They made such a fuss over him there, he never seemed to mind when I took him. He would find todays destination fascinating, I was sure. There would be much to explore. I spotted fewer houses along the road now and more land dedicated to farming. Slowing, I could see my turn coming up. As I drove up the graveled drive, I realized that the old cattle gap right off the road was no longer there. I missed the sound of the car bumping over the spaces in the boards that I had always loved as a small boy. Framed and shaded by five towering oaks, each well over a century old, the white frame house stood a couple of hundred feet back from the road on a gently rising slope. The front yard with its randomly placed small flower beds had recently been mowed, and the structure appeared to be in good repair. I pulled the car up close to the old, detached garage to park. I left the engine running for a moment. Why am I hesitating? I asked myself. What memories of this place do I have to fear? Nothing terrible had happened to me in my grandparents house that I could recall. I thought perhaps I was feeling a bit overwhelmed by the past suddenly rushing over me. My childhood felt so far away, and yet here I was, at a place indelibly linked in my mind with those years of my life. A happy time for me, for the most part. I didnt fear the memories themselves, I realized. I feared the feelings of loss the memories triggered, a longing to see my parents and my grandparents again. I blinked back a few tears and resolved to get on with inspecting the house. As an only child with no first cousins, I had felt the lack of family keenly when my parents died. My mothers parents had died some years before, and she had been an only child as well. From the backseat I heard an inquisitive warble and a loud meow. Abruptly, I switched the engine off and got out of the car. I opened the back door for Die... -

OneQuick, hide me! Suz said as she ran into the large white tent. Kari Stuart looked up from where she was positioning a freestanding wall featuring pictures of animals currently up for adoption at the Serenity Sanctuary, almost dropping the display on her foot. Kari wasnt sure what amazed her more-that her best friend, who was six feet tall with spiky lavender hair, thought she could actually hide behind five-foot-six brown-haired Kari, or that there was something Suz would feel the need to hide from at all. Theyd been friends since grade school, and as far as Kari knew, Suz wasnt afraid of anything. Is there a demon chasing you? Kari asked, shifting one side of the hinged board so the whole thing was more stable. They were on the parklike grounds of the two-year state college in Perryville, not far from their hometown of Lakeview, for the annual Tri-County Kennel Club Show. Suz was a member of the local kennel club, one of three clubs putting on the event, and shed been roped into taking on the coordinator role when someone else backed out at the last minute. In turn, shed persuaded (okay, bribed) Kari into helping by giving her the chance to have a fundraising and awareness-raising booth for the shelter. Worse, Suz said as she ducked behind one of the two long folding tables covered with white cloths. You havent seen me. You dont know where I am. A pile of adoption application forms on top of the table quivered, threatening to topple over into the volunteer sign-up sheet next to them. The setup was fairly simple, in part because it had been thrown together... -

In fact, it’s murder.Trudell Becket, known to her friends as Tru, finds herself in a bind when her library in lovely Cypress, South Carolina, is turned into a state-of-the-art bookless “technological center.” A library with no books breaks Tru’s book-loving heart so she decides to rescue hundreds of beloved tomes slated for the town dump. But if she gives the police her alibi, she’ll have to explain about the secret book room and risk losing the books.Tru knows she’s in a heap of trouble, and it doesn’t help that the officer in charge of the case is her old crush from high school, who broke her teenaged heart. And faster than you can say “Shhhh!” Tru quickly finds herself on the same page with a killer who would love to write her final chapter. . . . About the Author A lover of puzzles and perhaps a bit too nosy about other peoples lives, author Dorothy St. James is a former Folly Beach beach bum. She now lives in Mount Pleasant, South Carolina, with her husband, precocious daughter, slightly (okay, terribly) needy dogs, and the friendliest cat youd ever meet. Author of a dozen novels, Dorothy enjoys writing both cozy mysteries and romance. Her works have been nominated for many awards, including the Southern Independent Booksellers Alliance Southern Book Prize, the Romantic Times Reviewers Choice Award, the National Readers Choice Award, and the Romance Reviews Today Perfect 10! Award. Excerpt. © Reprinted by permission. All rights reserved. Chapter One No one in the moderately sized rural southern town of Cypress would ever suspect their stalwart assistant librarian of breaking into the library where she worked. Why would they? A bronze plaque hangs on my kitchen wall. It was personally presented to me by Mayor Goodvale. He declared me an asset to the town. Id received the award because I always performed my job with the highest level of pride and professionalism. For the past thirteen years I put the town and library first, often to the detriment of my personal life. An even bigger honor occurred a few years ago when Mrs. Lida Farnsworth, the towns head librarian, whispered (she always whispered) while we busily returned books to their shelves: Trudell Becket, I couldnt be more pleased to be wrong about my first impression of you. I would have hired any other candidate for the position. But, alas, the only other person whod applied was that drunkard Cooper Berry. I honestly didnt think you had it in you, honey. But, bless your heart, youve become the model of a perfect librarian. And she was right. I was perfect. Until . . . Well, lets just say someone needed to do this. As a general rule, librarians dont speak in loud voices. Librarians dont exceed the speed limit when driving to work. And librarians certainly dont dress head-to-toe in black ninja-wear while attempting to pick the librarys backdoor lock. Yet, librarians can always be counted on to get things done. Dont look at me like that, I mutt...

Allain’s writing is wry and delightful, borrowing skillfully from Austen’s distinctive use of free indirect speech. The book is bursting with witty asides and droll commentary, a tongue-in-cheek discourse designed to have us both laughing with and at the cast of characters. So when this man was given the opportunity to write The Mythology of Grimm, he saw it as a win-win situation. He also had no idea what he’d gotten himself into or how this project would completely take over his life. In case you haven’t figured it out yet . . . I am that man. I’d like to start off by stating that this project has occupied nearly every single day of my life for the last seven months or so. It has also been both a joy and an honor to write . . . and, at times, I worried it might drive me over the edge of madness (but I assure you, it would’ve been worth it in the end even if it had). As I got into the writing of this book, it soon became apparent to me that it was growing into a beast that could not be fed (or, at least, not fed enough). The manuscript had already gone far beyond its allotted word count before it was even three-quarters finished. As a result, I had no choice but to cut some things during the editing process. While I did my best to omit as little as possible, there were just not enough pages available in the final book (which you now hold) for me to fit in every single thing about the Grimm universe that might be considered noteworthy. However, I... -

Book : The Real Greys Anatomy A Behind-the-scenes Look At...
-Titulo Original : The Real Greys Anatomy A Behind-the-scenes Look At The Real Lives Of Surgical Residents-Fabricante : Berkley-Descripcion Original: The ABC medical drama Grey’s Anatomy has generated a flurry of interest in how medical professionals really make it through one of the most rigorous educational programs around, but how much of the medical drama seen in Grey’s Anatomy is pure entertainment, and how much is an accurate reflection of life both in and out of the OR? In The Real Greys Anatomy, a well-known medical journalist provides some answers. He examines a group of new surgical residents at a major teaching hospital in the Pacific Northwest as they tackle the roller-coaster ride of long hours, fascinating procedures, mundane office tasks, and emotional ups and downs that comprise the life of a student of surgery. From Publishers Weekly The overachievers on the hit TV show Greys Anatomy stand on the shoulders of M.D.s from decades of medical dramas. But health journalist Holtz finds more than a kernel of truth in the ABC white-coat soaper and notes, [O]ur attitudes and beliefs about surgery and medicine shift and adapt unconsciously while we take in the fiction from Seattle Grace Hospital. What unfolds in the book is a Cliffs Notes for surgical residents: the grueling hours-a max of 80 a week; the weird operating flukes-a flame bizarrely ignites from the gas in a surgery patients gut; the need to give good care even to bad people. The anecdotes, however, seem as likely to come from Greys as from real life. On the struggle in treating ailing criminals, one resident confides, I dont feel like my care was compromised by being aware that he was a criminal, but it definitely made me think about it. Theres little new in these tales from the sick ward, but Holtz gives them all a Hollywood glow. (Jan.) Copyright © Reed Business Information, a division of Reed Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved. Book : On The Road With Janis Joplin - Cooke, John Byrne
-Titulo Original : On The Road With Janis Joplin-Fabricante : Berkley-Descripcion Original: One of Parades Top Ten Rock n Roll Reads As a road manager and filmmaker, John Byrne Cooke helped run the Janis Joplin show-and record it for posterity. Now he reveals the never-before-told story of his years with the young woman from Port Arthur who would become the first female rock-and-roll superstar. In 1967, as the new sound of rock and roll was taking over popular music, John Byrne Cooke was at the center of it all. As a member of D. A. Pennebaker’s film crew, he witnessed the astonishing breakout performances of Janis Joplin and Jimi Hendrix at the Monterey Pop Festival that June. Less than six months later, he became road manager for Janis and her band, Big Brother and the Holding Company, and from then on, Cooke was a constant presence behind the scenes as the woman called Pearl took the world by storm. This intimate memoir spans the years he spent with Janis, from Monterey to Europe, Woodstock and Festival Express. Cooke tells the whole incredible story as only someone who lived it can. INCLUDES PERSONAL PHOTOGRAPHS Review “The story of the woman who skyrocketed to fame as the first female rock superstar and left it at a tragically young age-from someone who had a front-row seat.”- New York Post “The best book about Janis [Joplin].-Sam Andrews, Big Brother and the Holding Company “[Cooke] is a gifted writer, letting Joplin’s vivaciousness and intensity shine throughout the work.”- Library Journal Janis Joplin was absolutely a barnstormer and a complete groundbreaker. She wasnt just a great woman in rock-at the time she was the woman in rock. Janis really created this whole world of possibility for women in music: Without Janis Joplin, there would be no Melissa Etheridge. Without Janis, there would be no Chrissie Hynde, no Gwen Stefani. There would be no one. -Rosanne Cash “[Janis Joplin] perfectly expressed the feelings and yearnings of the girls of the electric generation-to be all woman, yet equal with men; to be free, yet a slave to real love; to [reject] every outdated convention, and yet get back to the basics of life.” -Lillian Roxon, rock critic “Joplin belonged to that select group of pop figures who mattered as much for themselves as for their music. Among American rock performers, she was second only to Bob Dylan in importance as a creator-recorder-embodiment of her generation’s mythology.” -Ellen Wills, rock journalist About the Author John Byrne Cooke was Janis Joplin’s road manager from 1967 until her death. He is an award-winning author of four previous books, a performing musician with decades of experience, a photographer, and a filmmaker. He has written book reviews for the New York Times, Washington Post Book World, and the Los Angeles Times. He lives in Jackson Hole, Wyoming. Excerpt. © Reprinted by permission. All rights reserved. ACKNOWLEDGMENTS SO MANY PEOPLE have helped in so many ways to bring this book, at long last, into the light of day, that I approach the task of acknowledging them with the certain knowledge that I will forget one or more whose names should be recognized here. I ask your forgiveness at the outset for any omissions, and I promise to rectify them when I can. Laura and Michael Joplin, Janis’s sister and brother, have shepherded Janis’s legacy through the years with care and love. They have supported the use of my photographs and films of Janis in many projects, and I am grateful for their support for this one. Jeff Jampol, the manager of Janis’s estate, has been similarly supportive; he has preserved and enhanced Janis’s legacy through a variety of creative projects and he provided valuable assistance and advice in moving this book along the path to publication. She also remained one of the most private of all the public figures of her time.In 1983 - at the age of seventy-five, her career cresting - the four-time Academy Award winner opened the door to biographer A. Scott Berg - then thirty-three - and began a special friendship, one that endured to the end of her illustrious life. From the start, Scott Berg felt that Katharine Hepburn intended his role to be not just that of a friend but also of a chronicler, a confidant who might record for posterity her thoughts and feelings. In addition to recording heretofore untold biographical details of her entire phenomenal career and her famous relationships with such men as Spencer Tracy and Howard Hughes, Kate Remembered also tells the amusing, often emotional story of one of the most touching friendships in her final years. Scott Berg provides his own memories of Katharine Hepburn offstage - quiet dinners in her town house in New York City, winter swims (she swam, he watched) in the Long Island Sound at Fenwick, her home in Connecticut, weekend visits with family members and dear friends...even some unusual appearances by the likes of Michael Jackson and Warren Beatty. Finally, Kate Remembered discusses the legendary actresss moving farewell, during which her mighty personality surrendered at last to her failing body - all the while remaining true to her courageous character.Kate Remembered is a book about love and friendship, family and career, Hollywood and Broadway - all punctuated by unforgettable lessons from an extraordinary life. Katharine Hepburn was the first movie star I had ever noticed, and she had been my favorite ever since-the only actor whose plays and movies I attended just because she was in them.On that Tuesday-April 5, 1983-I arrived at Third Avenue and Forty-ninth Street with fifteen minutes to spare. So I walked around a few neighboring blocks until 5:55 p.m. Then I slowly walked east on Forty-ninth Street until I was a few doors from Second Avenue-number 244. I stood on the sidewalk for another minute and a half, until the second hand on my watch ticked toward twelve. I opened the little black iron gate, stepped down into the well at the curtained front door, and pressed the button. The bell let out a ring so shrill, I could practically feel all four floors of the brownstone shake.Nobody answered. -Titulo Original : Confessions Of A Surgeon The Good, The Bad, And The Complicated...life Behind The O.r. Doors-Fabricante : Berkley-Descripcion Original: About the Author Paul A. Ruggieri, M.D., is a practicing board-certified general/laparoscopic surgeon who has been operating for over 20 years. Dr. Ruggieri performed his surgical training at the world-renowned Washington University School of Medicine, Barnes Hospital, in St. Louis. He then spent three years as an active duty general surgeon in the U.S. Army. Currently, he is former chief of the department of surgery at a large community hospital in Fall River, Massachusetts, the very hospital he helped build as an ironworker before attending medical school nearly 30 years ago. Dr. Ruggieri has written several books for patients. He lives in Rhode Island with his wife and three stepsons. Visit his website at paulruggieri . As an active surgeon and former department chairman, Dr. Paul A. Ruggieri has seen the good, the bad, and the ugly of his profession. In Confessions of a Surgeon, he pushes open the doors of the O.R. and reveals the inscrutable place where lives are improved, saved, and sometimes lost. He shares the successes, failures, remarkable advances, and camaraderie that make it exciting. He uncovers the truth about the abusive, exhaustive training and the arduous devotion of his old-school education. He explores the twenty-four-hour challenges that come from patients and their loved ones; the ethics of saving the lives of repugnant criminals; the hot-button issues of healthcare, lawsuits, and reimbursements; and the true cost of running a private practice. And he explains the influence of the white coat code of silence and why patients may never know what really transpires during surgery. Ultimately, Dr. Ruggieri lays bare an occupation that to most is as mysterious and unfamiliar as it is misunderstood. His account is passionate, illuminating, and often shocking-an eye-opening, never- before-seen look at real life, and death, in the O.R. From Booklist The life of a general surgeon is more guts than glamour. Often sleep-deprived and standing on his feet for hours, this physician-author navigates anatomical intricacies and deals with unexpected bleeding. Not to mention the pressure of a full bladder midway through an operation or worrying about a potential malpractice lawsuit. The job requirements of his profession include good judgment, an ability to think and act quickly, self-reliance, and a fondness for using one’s hands. The job description sounds stringent: “Show me where the problem is so I can fix it, remove it, rearrange it, drain it, or pass you on to someone else.” Yet in a series of sentimental clinical vignettes, the doctor divulges a wide range of feelings: pride, guilt, humility, regrets, failure, and, ultimately, burnout. His patients teach him many lessons. Trust makes the physician-patient relationship work. Detachment can be difficult. Imperfection is inevitable. Survival (of patients as well as the doctor) is the bottom line. Honest and angry, this cutting memoir by a midcareer surgeon feels like an act of penitence. --Tony Miksane... -
