-Titulo Original : The Villa-Fabricante : Berkley-Descripcion Original: #1 New York Times bestselling author Nora Roberts exposes a proud family’s deadly secrets in this passionate tale of two Napa Valley rivals...PR executive Sophia Giambelli loves her job and has never worried about competition. For three generations, her family’s wines have been world-renowned for their quality. But things are about to change at Villa Giambelli. Tereza, the matriarch, has announced a merger with the MacMillan family’s winery-and Sophia will be assuming a new role. As a savvy businesswoman, Sophia knows she must be prepared for anything...but she isn’t prepared for Tyler MacMillan. They’ve been ordered to work together very closely, to facilitate the merger. Sophia must teach Ty the finer points of marketing-and Ty, in turn, shows her how to get down and dirty, to use the sun, rain, and earth to coax the sweetest grapes from the vineyard. As they toil together, both in and out of the fields, Sophia is torn between a powerful attraction and a professional rivalry. At the end of the season, the course of the company’s future-and the legacy of the villa-may take an entirely new direction. Neither would continue to age.Like his bread and cheese, Bernardo was a simple man. He had lived in the same little house in the gentle hills north of Venice since his marriage fifty-one years before. His five children had been raised there. His wife had died there. Now at seventy-three, Bernardo lived alone, with most of his family a stones throw away, at the edges of the grand Giambelli vineyard where he had worked since his youth. He had known La Signora since her girlhood, and had been taught to remove his cap whenever she passed by. Even now if Tereza Giambelli traveled from California back to the castello and vineyard, she would stop if she saw him. And they would talk of the old days when her grandfather and his had worked the vines.Signore Baptista, she called him. Respectfully. He had great appreciation for La Signora, and had been loyal to her and hers the whole of his life. For more than sixty years he had taken part in the making of Giambelli wine. There had been many changes-some good, in Bernardos opinion, some not so good. He had seen much. Some thought, too much. The vines, lulled into dormancy by winter, would soon be pruned. Arthritis prevented him from doing much of the hard work, as he once had, but still he would go out every morning to watch his sons and grandsons carry on the tradition. A Baptista had always worked for Giambelli. And in Bernardos mind, always would. On this last night of his seventy-three years, h...

Wyley imagined pinching the nicely rounded rump of the young blonde who was directly in his line of sight. It was a perfectly harmless fantasy that did nothing to distress the blonde, or Henrys wife, and put Henry himself in the best of moods. With a lap robe tucked around his pudgy knees and a plump belly well satisfied by a late and luxurious lunch, he sat in the bracing sea air with his wife, Edith-whose bum, bless her, was flat as a pancake-enjoying the blondes derriere along with a fine cup of Earl Grey.Henry, a portly man with a robust laugh and an eye for the ladies, didnt bother to stir himself to join other passengers at the rail for a glimpse of Irelands shimmering coast. Hed seen it before and assumed hed have plenty of opportunities to see it again if he cared to.Though what fascinated people about cliffs and grass eluded him. Henry was an avowed urbanite who preferred the solidity of steel and concrete. And at this particular moment, he was much more interested in the dainty chocolate cookies served with the tea than with the vista.Particularly when the blonde moved on.Though Edith fussed at him not to make a pig of himself, he gobbled up three cookies with cheerful relish. Edith, being Edith, refrained. It was a pity she denied herself that small pleasure in the last moments of her life, but she would die as shed lived, worrying about her husbands extra tonnage and brushing at the crumbs that scattered carelessly on his shirtfront.Henry, however, was a man who believed in indulgence. What, after all, was the point of being rich if you didnt treat yourself to the finer things? Hed been poor, and hed been hungry. Rich and well fed was better.Hed never been handsome, but when a man had money he was called substantial rather than fat, interesting rather than homely. Henry appreciated the absurdity of the distinction. At just before three in the afternoon on that sparkling May day, the wind blew at his odd little coal-colored toupee, whipped high, hap...

She lives in the South with her husband and geriatric cats. Excerpt. © Reprinted by permission. All rights reserved. Georgie Up until yesterday, I, Georgie Carruthers, never believed in aliens. Oh, sure, there were all kinds of possibilities out there in the universe, but if someone would have told me that little green men were hanging around Earth in flying saucers, just waiting to abduct people? I would have told them they were crazy. But that was yesterday. Today? Todays a very different sort of story. I suppose it all started last night. It was pretty ordinary, overall. I came home after a long day of working the drive-thru teller window at the bank, nuked a Lean Cuisine, ate it while watching TV, and dozed off on the couch before stumbling to bed. Not exactly the life of the party, but hey. It was a Tuesday, and Tuesdays were all work, no play. I went to sleep, and from there, shit got weird. My dreams were messed up. Not the usual losing teeth or naked in front of the class dreams. These were far more sinister. Dreams of loss and abandonment. Dreams of pain and cold white rooms. Dreams of walking in a tunnel and seeing an oncoming train. In that dream, I tried to lift my hand to shield me from the light. Except when I went to raise my hand, I couldnt. That had woken me up from my slumber. I squinted into the tiny light someone was shining in my eyes. Someone was . . . shining something in my eyes? I blinked, trying to focus, and realized that I wasnt dreaming at all. I wasnt home, either. I was . . . somewhere new. Then the light clicked off and a bird chirped. I squinted, my eyes adjusting to the darkness, and I found myself surrounded by . . . things. Things with long black eyes and big heads and skinny pale arms. Little green men. Id screamed. Id screamed bloody murder, actually. One of the aliens tilted its head at me, and the bird chirping sound happened again, even though his mouth didnt move. Something hot and dry wrapped over my mouth, choking me, and a noxious scent filled my nostrils. Oh shit. Was I going to die? Frantically, I worked my jaw, trying to breathe even as the world got dark around me. Then, I went back to sleep, dreaming of work. I always dreamed of work when I was stressed. For hours on end, angry banking clients yelled at me as I kept trying to tear open packs of twenties that wouldnt seem to come open. Id try to count out change only to get distracted. Work dreams are the worst, usually, but this one was a relief. No trains. No aliens. Just banking. I could deal with banking. And that brings me to . . . here. Im awake. Awake and not entirely sure where I am. My eyes slide open, and I gaze around me. It smells like Im in ...

But there was no Palmer, there were no holdings, and the office space behind the door housed no limited liability company. The pizzeria was right in the heart of Ferraro territory, a large section of businesses and homes that were owned, rented, or leased and protected by the Ferraro family. There were whispers and rumors about the family and had been for years. It was said one could go to them with a problem and that problem would mysteriously go away. Stefano Ferraro was head of the family, and he ruled with an iron fist. They owned banks and hotels, race cars and nightclubs, and they ran all sorts of other businesses, but they could be counted on to take care of the small problems in their territory. They knew the business owners by name and often were seen patronizing the local deli or pizzeria. Benito kept a booth just for their family and a smaller table set aside for their bodyguards. It was always empty for them, even at his busiest times. Theyd never asked him to do so, but then theyd helped him out of more than one problem, and he liked their business. They always insisted on paying, and they tipped his waitresses and waiters more than fairly. It was a win-win situation. Tonight, only the youngest Ferraro had slipped into the pizzeria through the side door, her bodyguards and Elie Archambault with her. Everyone hoped there would be an announcement very soon of an engagement between Emmanuelle and Elie. Emme was a favorite of everyone in the Ferraro territory and shed seemed far too sad lately. Elie seemed to make her laugh, and they wanted Emme happy. Emmanuelle Ferraro laughed as she dipped a salty breadstick into oil and took a bite. The booth in the shadows managed to hide her from most of the other patrons in the restaurant, which was why this particular table was always held in reserve for the Ferraro family. She was extremely grateful they had a place to go just to be ÒnormalÓ when she never felt as if she could truly relax anywhere else. Eating pizza at PetrovOs with Elie Archambault was the most relaxed she could ever get, and she was extremely happy that she could have this little time to pretend her life was ordinary. I cant believe the first thing you put on the plus side of this list was having babies. Elie glared at her. Her laughter spilled out again at the feigned horror on his face. He was handsome. Shockingly so. All masculine a...

Thats what I tell myself, anyway. I mean it every time. But then, every time, something happens-I make a mistake, I know I can do better, or I hear, in my head, what people will say. So I stop and go back to the beginning, to get it right this time. And its really the last time this time. Except it isnt. Ive spent the past six months doing this, going over the same measures again and again like a rhinoceros pacing figure eights at the zoo. These notes dont even make sense to me anymore. But I keep trying. Until my fingers hurt and my back aches and my wrist throbs with every pull of the bow on the strings. I ignore it all and give the music everything I have. Only when the timer goes off do I lower my violin from my chin. My head is spinning, and Im parched with thirst. I must have turned my lunch alarm off and forgotten to actually eat. That happens a lot more often than I care to admit. If it werent for the zillions of alarms on my phone, I might have accidentally ended myself by now. Its out of consideration for life that...

Chapter OneMommy, Daddys doing the bad thing again. The childs voice very clearly said the words shed said to her mother when she was four years old. When she was five. When she was seven.Stella Harrison knew she was dreaming, but she still couldnt fight her way to the surface. This was the fifth night in a row shed had the dream, and the camera had widened the lens just a little more, as it had every night, so she saw additional pieces of the hideous nightmare she couldnt stop. The man fishing. He wore denim bibbed overalls tucked into high olive-colored waders. A blue cap was pulled low over his eyes so she couldnt see his face. There were boulders among the heavy reeds and plants that grew thick along the shore, creeping out into the lake. Hed made his way through the boulders to get out from under the shade of several trees. She tried to warn him. Yelling. Calling out. Dont cast. Dont do it. Every night she saw his line go into the same spot. That little darker area that rippled in rings like a little round pool, so inviting. The fisherman always did the same exact thing, like a programmed robot. Stepping forward, casting, the lure hitting perfectly, sinking into the middle of that inky spot, dropping beneath the water into the depths below. The camera switched then and she could see beneath the water. It should have been tranquil. Peaceful. Fish swimming. Not the man in the wet suit, waiting for that hook, waiting to tug and enter into some kind of terrible game with the fisherman above the surface. The fight for the fish became a real life-and-death battle, with the fisherman lured farther and farther from the safety of the shore and into the reeds and rocks-closer to the threat that lurked beneath the water. The mythical fish appeared to be fighting. He seemed big, and well worth the exhausting battle. The fisherman paid less and less attention to his surroundings as he reeled the fish nearer to him and realized he was close to winning his prize.Without warning...

When the plane finally skidded to a stop, I couldnt make my right hand let go of the armrest. Literally Id held on so tight that my hand had locked up, as if holding on tight would have done a damn bit of good if the plane had wrecked. The pilot turned his head to look at me and give me a thumbs-up. I just stared at him, my heart in my throat. I was phobic of flying, and this bumpy trip in a four-seater Cessna hadnt done a damn thing to quiet my fears. He took off his headset and said, Oh, come on, it wasnt that bad, was it? He smiled when he said it. I glared at him until his smile faltered. I was projecting badass while the only mantra in my head was I will not throw up. I will not throw up. Only knowing that a mans life hung in the balance had gotten me to climb into the progressively smaller planes until this final one. Well, welcome to Hanuman, Michigan, Marshal Blake, the pilot said at last, and opened the door. As I pried my hand free of its death grip, I wondered again why I was doing this. Because its your job, I thought. I kept telling myself that as I gathered my bags and fitted the big one through the door ahead of me. The pilot said, That bags big enough to hold a body. Only if it was my size or smaller, though I guess I could cut it up and make almost anyone fit, I said as I got the rest of me and the smaller bag through the door and down onto the tarmac. Very funny, the pilot said. I gave him the flat look until he said, Whats really in the bag? Weapons, a man said as he walked toward us in the last light of the setting sun. Id had just a moment to see the forest, and then it was dark as if someone had turned the lights off. You know youre in the boondocks when its that dark even before you step into the trees; in their shade, it would be cave dark. I smiled at Marshal Winston Newman. He was as tall as the first time Id met him, as in over six feet, but had more meat on his bones as if he was either gaining weight or gaining muscle. Id have to see him in better light to be sure whether he was hitting the gym or hitting the donuts. His hair was still short underneath his white cowboy hat, but the hat wasnt brand-new anymore. The brim had been worked with his hands so that it made an almost sharp point over his face. It fit him now. When Id first met him, the hat had struck me as a present from someone who hadnt really known him or wanted him to be more cowboy than hed seemed. He offered to take a bag so I could shake his hand, and I let him take it. Id have done the same for him...

Harry became head of the Westcott family, though he also acquired a guardian to manage his affairs until he reached his twenty-first birthday-Avery Archer, Duke of Netherby.None of these new acquisitions remained his for long, however. A private investigation launched by his mother to find and pay off the bastard daughter her husband had supported all their married life, supposedly without her knowledge, resulted in what she and Harry and her two daughters came to think of ever after as the Great Disaster-they always spoke of it as though those two words would be capitalized if written down. CHAPTER ONE Six months later In another era, the neglected building on the south bank of the Cumberland River might have been quaint and inviting. Happy, even. But no more. -Titulo Original : For Your Own Good-Fabricante : Berkley-Descripcion Original: INSTANT USA TODAY BESTSELLER“Witty and macabre.”-Caroline KepnesSlick and chilling.-Megan Miranda“I read all of her [books]. Ive read everything.”-Cecily Strong from SNL for Vanity Fair“A perfect summer book.”-NPRUSA Todaybestselling author Samantha Downing is back with her latest sneaky thriller set at a prestigious private school-complete with interfering parents, overeager students, and one teacher who just wants to teach them all a lesson… Teddy Crutcher has won Teacher of the Year at the prestigious Belmont Academy, home to the best and brightest. He says his wife couldn’t be more proud-though no one has seen her in a while. Teddy really can’t be bothered with a few mysterious deaths on campus that’re looking more and more like murder or with the student digging a little too deep into Teddy’s personal life. His main focus is pushing these kids to their full academic potential. All he wants is for his colleagues-and the endlessly meddlesome parents-to stay out of his way. If not, well, they’ll get what they deserve. It’s really too bad that sometimes excellence can come at such a high cost. From School Library Journal From the very first line, Downing draws readers into the unsettling and atmospheric setting of her latest thriller. At Belmont Academy, most of the students and faculty are rich; they give little thought to how things are outside their bubble. But not Teacher of the Year Teddy Crutcher. He knows how things should be, and he wont let little things like the death of a parent or a fellow teacher get in the way of his vision. Readers who enjoy high-stakes thrillers will find much to enjoy here. Every time readers think they know whats happening, Downing introduces a new character or another twist. The story is told from the perspective of multiple characters, which helps increase the tension in the novel as characters reveal conflicting information about what is happening. The ending weaves together the many threads Downing tangled together throughout the novel, and the final line leaves readers with the disturbing feeling that this is not the end of Belmonts issues. There is, unfortunately, some fatphobia and ableism. The book would have been stronger without these elements. VERDICT An unsettling and twisty thriller that deals with entitlement, revenge, and the lies we tell ourselves; readers who enjoy Tiffany Jackson, Karen McManus, and Holly Jackson will find a lot to love in this book.-Ness Shortley, Horton Middle Sch., Pittsboro, NC?(c) Copyright 2011. The humming fan on her dresser stirred it, but it was like sleeping in the steam pumping off the pot.Still, she was used to that, to lying on top of summer-moist sheets, with the windows open wide to the relentless chorus of cicadas-and the faint hope even a tiny breeze would slither through the sultry. The heat didn’t wake her, nor did the soft rumble of thunder from a storm gathering in the distance. Naomi went from sleep to awake in an instant, as if someone had given her a good shake or shouted her name in her ear.She sat straight up in bed, blinking at the dark, hearing nothing but the hum of the fan, the high pitch of the cicadas, and the lazy, repetitive hoo of an owl. All country summer sounds she knew as well as her own voice, and nothing to put that odd little click in her throat. But now, awake, she felt that heat, like gauze soaked in hot water and wrapped around every inch of her. She wished it were morning so she could sneak out before anyone was up and cool off in the creek.Chores came first, that was the rule. She lives in North Carolina. Excerpt. © Reprinted by permission. All rights reserved. Washington, D.C. Hollis Templeton opened her eyes and blinked at a ceiling that looked . . . odd. She reached out a seeking hand with what had become habit, encountered only smooth sheet, and sat up abruptly. The bed beside her was empty of her FBI Special Crimes Unit partner and lover, Reese DeMarco. That was strange enough, and unsettling enough, that it took Hollis another moment or so to realize that wasnt the only wrong thing. The sheets she knew were pale blue looked gray. So did the duvet cover, which was supposed to be a muted but attractive print of several colors. She touched with tentative fingers and found that it felt normal-except for the chill. She felt chilled, which wasnt all that surprising since she wasnt wearing a nightgown or pajamas and it was March. Still, the cold Hollis felt was due to something other than a chilly room and her own nakedness. It was a slightly familiar chill, and just acknowledging that made her feel even colder, especially when she also recognized the very faint, almost elusive odor that was, in an oddly primal way, unpleasant and difficult to identify. But familiar. Even so, she fixed her mind on calm mode and made no attempt to reach through the easy telepathic connection to Reese in order to wake him. In fact, she eased the door on her side closed. Because he could share her dreams, even from time to time walk with her through them, especially if she had a nightmare or was otherwise upset, and she did not want him sharing this place even if he could. Which she was reasonably sure he couldnt. At least he hadnt ever before. And shed probably need him to anchor her on the living side, in case she got into trouble. Or even if she didnt. She looked up, finally, to examine the room. A pleasant bedroom in their pleasant condo, it was spacious and decorated simply and comfortably because they agreed about such things and how a home should feel even if they were seldom present to enjoy the comfort of home for very long. But it was gray. And it wasnt supposed to be gray. Hollis hesitated a moment, then pushed back the duvet and sheet and slid from the big bed. She found the nightgown she had briefly worn on the floor, which was where it usually ended up, and put it on. The robe that matched it was silky and not made to warm up the body, but she found it lying over a chair near the bed and put it on as well, tying the flimsy little s...
