About the Author Nalini Singh is the New York Times bestselling author of the Psy-Changeling novels and the Guild Hunter series. Excerpt. © Reprinted by permission. All rights reserved. Chapter 1While I am yet close to my Silence and may remain so for the rest of my life, I do not come close to the robotic coldness of Payal Rao. There is something fundamentally defective about her, something that puts her in the same category as those we term psychopaths, and I have no compunction in saying that openly.-Excerpt from the April 2083 edition of the Singapore Business Quarterly: Interview with Gia KhanPayal had risen to her position as CEO of the Rao Conglomerate by being ready for anything. Surprise was an enemy to be conquered-because unlike what seemed to be the majority of her race, she wasnt sanguine about the utopia of a world beyond the emotionless regime of Silence.A century the Psy had spent shackled to the pitiless ice of the Protocol. Payal didnt have enough data to say whether Silence had been a failure, but she knew that emotion brought with it countless problems, exposed endless vectors of weakness. She had felt once. It had caused her visceral pain-and nearly led to an order of psychic rehabilitation. Had she not been a cardinal telekinetic, valued and not exactly plentiful on the ground, the medics wouldve wiped her brain and left her a shuffling creature without a mind.Far better to be thought a psychopathic robot-as shed so memorably been described by Gia Khan earlier that year-than drop her Silent shield and give her enemies a soft, quivering target. Payal had no intention of ending up dead and forgotten like her grandfather, uncle, and eldest sibling, Varun. So it was noteworthy that the missive currently displayed on her private organizer had caught her unprepared. It wasnt only the contents, either. No, what was even more unexpected was the address to which the message had been directed: an e-mail address shed set up after she watched her father execute his firstborn for the crime of conspiring against him.Pranath Rao was not a man to forgive disloyalty.Older than Payal by fifteen years, Varun had been caught because-in an act of arrogant stupidity-hed used official channels to make his seditious plans. He mustve believed their father wouldnt bother to check up on the child being groomed to one day take over the Rao empire.Hed been wrong. In punishment, Pranath had held his son down using telekinesis, then ordered a combat telepath to crush Varuns brain, crush it so hard that blood had leaked out of his eyes and brain matter out of his ears. Varuns screams had gone on and on until...

While the rest of the country is gripped with snow, biting cold, or both, the self-professed home of the weird is in full flower. Endless blue Texas skies stretch from horizon to horizon, temperatures hover in the low sixties, and woodsmoke and slow-cooking brisket flavor the air. In February, its hard to have a bad day in Austin. But I was giving it a helluva try. I stomped on the gas pedal as the traffic light changed from yellow to amber. The eight-cylinder Hemi replied with a chest-rumbling growl, sending my truck hurtling through the intersection. A split second later, I slammed on the brakes, bringing the five-thousand-pound Dodge Ram to a screeching stop. A comfortable six inches now separated my pickup and the bumper-sticker-adorned electric blue Prius ahead of me. On the bench seat to my right, a packet of papers slid toward the floorboard. I made a grab for them and missed, snagging the thin green tissue wrapping a bouquet of crimson roses instead. All things considered, Id take the flowers over the papers any day. Even with the papers scattered across the trucks floorboard, I could still read the words radiology department stamped across the tops of the pages in sterile block letters. At this distance, the spidery blue handwriting filling the margins wasnt legible, but I knew what the doctor had scribbled all the same. The Prius driver glared in his rearview mirror, and I chuckled. Apparently the coexist sticker plastered to his bump...

The look that told her despite the big house, the fancy clothes and the fat diamond on the fourth finger of her left hand, she’d always be Shelby Anne Pomeroy, two steps out of the bumpkin town in Tennessee where she was born and raised. He’d have laughed once, she thought now, he’d have known she was joking and laughed as if she were the sparkle in his life. But oh God, she’d dulled in his eyes, and so fast, too.The man she’d met nearly five years before on a starry summer night had swept her off her feet, away from everything she’d known, into worlds she’d barely imagined. He’d treated her like a princess, shown her places she’d only read about in books or seen in movies. And he’d loved her once-hadn’t he? It was important to remember that. He’d loved her, wanted her, given her all any woman could ask for.Provided. That was a word he’d often used. He’d provided for her.Maybe he’d been upset when she got pregnant, maybe she’d been afraid-just for a minute-of the look in his eyes when she told him. But he’d married her, hadn’t he? Whisked her off to Las Vegas like they were having the adventure of a lifetime. They’d been happy then. It was important to remember that now, too. She had to remember that, to hold tight the memories of the good times.A woman widowed at twenty-four needed memories.A woman who learned she’d been living a lie, was not only broke but in terrible, breathtaking debt, needed reminders of the good times. The lawyers and accountants and tax people explained it all to her, but they might as well have been speaking Greek when they went on about leveraging and hedge funds and foreclosures. The big house, one that had intimidated her since she’d walked in the door, wasn’t hers-or not enough hers to matter-but the mortgage company’s. The cars, leased not bought, and with the payments overdue, not hers, either. The furniture? Bought on credit, and those payments overdue. And the taxes. She couldn’t bear to think about the taxes. It terrified her to think of them.In the two months and eight days since Richard’s death, it seemed all she did was think about matters he’d told her not to worry about, matters that weren’t her concern. Matters, when he’d give her that look, that were none of her business. Now i...

Chapter One The little, everyday memories always hurt the most. Emma Hochstedler knew that well enough. Ever since the shock of her parents deaths six months ago, shed gone teary-eyed over the strangest things. Like today. Here she sat on a busy June morning, sniffling over a battered egg basket. It was a foolish waste of time, she knew, but still, she couldnt help it. She hadnt seen this one coming. Shed passed the daily chore of chicken tending to her younger sister, Miriam, years ago, and to be honest, she hadnt given the egg basket much thought since. But just now when Emma had pulled it from its shelf, the handle had fit her hand with such heartbreaking familiarity that shed been brought up short. For a finger snap of time, standing there on the back porch of the farmhouse, shed been a happy little girl again, her sheltered world still shining and unbroken. The doorknob rattled behind her, and she blotted her eyes with the back of one hand. She couldnt let the family see her crying. It would worry them. The least she could do-the very least considering the circumstances-was not to add to their pain by giving in to her own. Emma? Vass is letz? Her new sister-in-law stood in the kitchen doorway, a broom in one hand and a concerned look on her kind face. Nothings wrong, Naomi. Emma forced a smile. Except that Im sitting here woolgathering when we have such a full morning ahead of us. She brandished the basket. Im off to the coop, and then Ill be ready to help you pick the cucumbers. Naomis brow puckered. Youre seeing to the chickens? Ja. This time Emmas smile came more easily. I thought Id take the job off your hands. Youre doing more than your share already. That was true. Her brother Joseph had chosen well. Not only was Naomi sweet-hearted and devoted to her new husband, but she was patient and hardworking, a welcome addition to a family whod weathered so many troubles. Since your heart operation, Ive had to scramble to find any chores left to do. I like to work, Naomi said. After so many years of being sickly, its a real blessing for me to finally be able to do for other folks. She glanced over her shoulder. But it used to be Miriams job to tend to the hens, aint so? Back . . . before, I mean. Joseph told me it was her favorite chore. Ja, it was. Emmas lips curved at the memory. It wasnt mine, so I was happy enough to pass it off to her, once Mamm said I could. Theyre a messy job, the chickens, but Miriam never minded. She knew all the hens personalities, and she liked to name them after our friends. Mamm fussed about that. She didnt think it sounded k...

Or so, Tate thought as she dived, her father said. She knew it took a great deal more than luck, as ten years of searching had already proven. It took money and time and exhausting effort. It took skill and months of research and equipment. But as she swam toward her father through the crystal blue Caribbean, she was more than willing to play the game. It wasnt a hardship to spend the summer of her twentieth year diving off the coast of St. Kitts, skimming through gloriously warm water among brilliantly hued fish and sculptures of rainbow coral. Each dive was its own anticipation. What might lie beneath that white sand, hidden among the fans and sea grass, buried under the cleverly twisted formations of coral? It wasnt the treasure, she knew. It was the hunt. And occasionally, you did get lucky. She remembered very well the first time she had lifted a silver spoon from its bed of silt. The shock and the thrill of holding that blackened cup in her fingers, wondering who had used it to scoop up broth. A captain perhaps of some rich galleon. Or the captains lady. And the time her mother had been cheerfully hacking away at a hunk of conglomerate, the chunk of material formed by centuries of chemical reactions under the sea. The sound of her squeal, then the bray of delighted laughter when Marla Beaumont had unearthed a gold ring. The occasional luck allowed the Beaumonts to spend several months a year hunting for more. For more luck, and more treasure. As they swam side by side, Raymond Beaumont tapped his daughters arm, pointed. Together they watched a sea turtle paddle lazily. The laugh in her fathers eyes said everything. He had worked har...

She lived with them, worked with them, studied them. She dreamed of them. And because that didn’t seem to be enough, in some deep, secret chamber of her heart, she mourned for them.A decade as a cop had toughened her, given her a cold, clinical, and often cynical eye toward death and its many causes. It made scenes such as the one she viewed now, on a rainy night on a dark street nasty with litter, almost too usual. But still, she felt.Murder no longer shocked, but it continued to repel. The woman had been lovely once. Long trails of her golden hair spread out like rays on the dirty sidewalk. Her eyes, wide and still with that distressed expression death often left in them, were a deep purple against cheeks bloodlessly white and wet with rain. She’d worn an expensive suit, the same rich color as her eyes. The sights and scents were familiar, but each time, every time, there was something new. Both victim and killer left their own imprint, their own style, and made murder personal. The scene had already been recorded. Judge and jury-in the form of his parents-had not been swayed by pleas, reason, temper, threats, but instead had sentenced him and shipped him off, away from everything he knew and cared about, to a world without video parlors or Big Macs. The only thing that kept him from completely dying of boredom, or just going wacko, was his prized Game Boy. As far as he could see, it would be him and Tetris for the duration of his prison term-two horrible, stupid months-in the Wild freaking West. This way, you were just Clark Kent or Bruce Wayne, the lame alter egos of the cool guys. All of his friends were back, a zillion miles back, in New York. Where the Rajah was now, in the middle of the Southern Ocean, there was only a short time between sunset and darkness. She leaned over to look more closely at the water. Veterinary intern Emily can’t believe she wound up in the small town of Sunshine, Idaho, instead of the Los Angeles clinic she had always imagined. Now she has to put her plans to move to L.A. on hold for a whole year while she fulfills the obligation of her vet school scholarship. Then Wyatt, her gorgeous one-night stand from a Reno vet conference, introduces himself as her new boss. And Emily is just as drawn to his seductive looks and quiet strength as she was on that very steamy night. She soon learns that Wyatt isn’t just a laid-back doctor, but a delicious alpha male tempting her away from her carefully laid-out plans... One I wanted to thank you for having me, Dr. Connelly-” Emily Stevens broke off and shook her head. Not quite right. She tightened her grip on the steering wheel in the parking lot of her new job. “I really hope to make a positive impact-” Nope, even worse. No one liked a brownnoser. She cleared her throat, looked into her rearview mirror and forced a smile. “I’m thrilled to be stuck in West Nowhere, USA.” Your own fault. She drew in a deep breath, applied lip gloss-because everyone knew that was the same thing as courage-and got out of the car. It was early autumn, and the chill in the early morning air only served to remind her just how far from Los Angeles she really was. She looked around, taking in the towering, intimidating Bitterroot mountain range, backdropping what could only be described as a vast, wide open valley of the most pristine, remote land of meandering rivers and lakes she’d ever seen. Emily figured it was filled with bears and wild mountain lions, and probably Bigfoot for all she knew. Having come from the land of freeway overpasses and interchanges, the wildest animals she’d ever seen were of the two-legged variety. In front of her was Belle Haven, a wood and glass building housing an animal center run by Dr. Dell Connelly and his two brothers, Brady and Adam. If only Belle Haven had been her number one choice on her list of dream jobs. Or even last. But it hadn’t been on her list at all. She sucked in a breath. She could do this. She had to do this. In her first year of vet school, she’d accepted one of only two available grants. The repayment was a year of internship at either of the two animal centers who’d donated the money, and she always paid her debts. She’d hoped for L.A., not Sunshine, Idaho, but that’s what happened when your mom’s multiple sclerosis flared up right before you left for college and you ended up doing school half-assed while trying to keep the rest of your life together-the other scholarship recipient got their first choice. Shit happened, and Emily knew that better than most. Shit happened, people got sick and died, you picked yourself up and kept going....

He seldom lied to anyone, and he expected the same courtesy in return. He tried to calm down as he headed for the stable, but it was an effort in futility. Hed trusted her. When he remembered their conversation the day before yesterday, humiliation seared his cheeks. Shed made him look stupid. Correction, hed made himself look stupid by allowing himself to be taken in by those innocent hazel eyes.Anna was standing at a file cabinet, hands full of papers, when he burst into the office. He made a conscious effort not to slam the door closed behind him. We need to talk, he bit out.Her face drained of color. About?Sit down. She put the papers on top of the cabinet and went to sit in her chair. Today she wore a fake suede skirt that had seen better times and a sleeveless blouse with one button that didnt quite match the rest. As Parker advanced on her, he noticed that her face grew paler by the second and that the cherry surface of her work area gleamed with fresh polish. I dont appreciate being lied to, he said evenly.Agitated and needing something to do with his hands, he reached for the granite paperweight on the blotter. At his movement, she flinched and jerked up her right arm to shield her face, clearly convinced he meant to strike her. Whoa. Parker was angry. Hed be the first to admit that. But hed never hit a woman in his life, not even his little sister when theyd fought as kids.Fingertips still resting on the paperweight, Parker studied his frightened bookkeeper with mounting bewilderment. She had a small scar on her left cheek. It still bore the pinkness of a recent wound. Now that he examined it more closely, a very unpleasant possibility sprang to his mind.In his younger years, he had occasionally gotten into honky-tonk brawls, and hed seen his share of...

Belle’s complexion isn’t dark because of her alleged Portuguese heritage that lets her pass as white-her complexion is dark because she is African American. The Personal Librarian tells the story of an extraordinary woman, famous for her intellect, style, and wit, and shares the lengths she must go to-for the protection of her family and her legacy-to preserve her carefully crafted white identity in the racist world in which she lives. Review “Historical fiction at its best…The Personal Librarian spins a complex tale of deceit and allegiance as told through books.”-Good Morning America“Benedict, who is white, and Murray, who is African American, do a good job of depicting the tightrope Belle walked, and her internal conflict from both sides-wanting to adhere to her mothers wishes and move through the world as white even as she longed to show her father she was proud of her race. Like Belle and her employer, Benedict and Murray had almost instant chemistry, and as a result, the books narrative is seamless...I became hooked.”-NPR“A fascinating story!”-Real Simple“An extraordinary tale that is both brilliant historical fiction and an important and timely commentary on racism. By holding up an unflinching mirror and illuminating this little-known chapter in American history, these two gifted authors have penned a work that is a must-read.”-Pam Jenoff, New York Times bestselling author of The Woman with the Blue Star “A marvel of a story. That Belle denied her true identity in order to protect herself and her family from racial persecution speaks not only to her times but also to ours, a hundred years later. All that glitters is not gold. This is a compelling and important story.” -Therese Anne Fowler, New York Times bestselling author of A Good Neighborhood“As richly depicted as the lush world of art and literature Belle da Costa Greene presided over…an immersive, sweeping delight as well as an intimate, moving, and powerful portrait of Belles personal and professional life. CHAPTER 1 Shadowy reflections of drooping banana leaves haunted the dirt-smudged windows of the old house. It made me think of the hidden memories of people and a past long since gone but still trapped within the walls of the crumbling structure. The roof of the front porch sagged as if weighted with the gravity of the experience of people who had once passed through the corridors before exiting through the doors and windows forever. I stepped up onto the porch, my fingers brushing the rainbow-hued Mardi Gras beads dangling from the handrails and next to empty spaces left by missing porch spindles that lent a grinning-pumpkin look to the front of the house. Creeping vines from the overgrown front yard claimed most of the three guillotine windows that lined the porch adjacent to the front door, completing the abandoned air and haunted look of the Creole cottage Id already set my heart on buying. This dilapidated structure was a symbol. A call to arms for me. A new place to start after an impressive and unexpected stumble and a complicated knot of bad decisions, stupidity, and an alarming amount of unwarranted confidence that had almost derailed my life. And all despite the family whose love and support I wasnt convinced I deserved. Nola . . . Despite the worry and caution in my stepmothers voice, she stopped. We had both learned over the last six years that I needed to make my own decisions. And accept the consequences. I slowly hopscotched broken boards and patches of termite-chewed wood, the lacelike sinews as dangerous as thin ice. Spots of faded fuchsia paint clung to the front door and corbels of the porch roof, contrasting with the inevitable blue paint of the ceiling and lime green of the clapboards. A line of dusty blue bottles sat atop the sash of one of the windows, a precarious position for something so fragile. Maybe whoever had placed them there believed in taking chances. It needs a little work, I said. Mostly TLC. And mayb...
