Definitely Hispanic INTRODUCTION I’ve always loved making people laugh. And five years ago, I was blessed to discover that I could actually make people laugh and create a positive impact on their lives for a living by re-creating scenes based on my experiences growing up Hispanic in the United States. Everything from my childhood is so vivid-I can feel it, touch it, smell it. I close my eyes and can transport myself to when I was a kid following (or breaking) our strict house rules; dancing and arguing with my loving, fierce, and selfless mom; listening attentively to my kindhearted, tenacious, and caring dad; looking up to, admiring, and competing with my smart and passionate big sister; playing and becoming best friends with my beloved little brother; and hanging out with my dear, wise, and compassionate abuela. Those joyous, colorful, and sometimes dramatic memories are so strong and present in my mind that bringing them to life in my videos is only natural to me. I am incredibly proud of being Hispanic. Everything that we represent as a community and as a people is rooted in our love for life, our respect for others, and our compassion and empathy. Our households are much sterner than those of other cultures surrounding us, and although I suffered through it as a kid, I now understand that it is because our parents are looking out for us, teaching us important life lessons on a day-to-day basis because they simply want the best for us. From the outside, our homes may look like small dictatorships, but to us it’s normal, it’s our way of life. Some people may not get it, but every act of discipline, every rule, every lesson, every hug, every laugh molds us into better human beings, arming us with the tools we need to succeed in every chapter of our lives. When I was living in my first apartment in a dodgy part of town, I never imagined that the short-form videos I was creating for fun would go viral and open this new and unexpected do... -

The luminous Italian movie star was the first artist to win an Oscar for a foreign language performance, after which she continued a vibrant and varied career that took her from Hollywood to Paris to Italy-and back to Hollywood. In Yesterday, Today, and Tomorrow, Loren shares vivid memories of work, love, and family with winning candor. Born in 1934 and growing up in World War II Italy, Loren’s life of glamour and success was preceded by years of poverty and hardship, when she lived in her grandparents’ house with her single mother and sister, and endured near starvation. She shares how she blossomed from a toothpick-thin girl into a beautiful woman seemingly overnight, getting her start by winning a beauty pageant; and how her first Hollywood film, The Pride and the Passion, ignited a high-profile romance with Cary Grant, who would vie with her mentor, friend, frequent producer, and lover Carlo Ponti to become her husband. Loren also reveals her long-held desire to become a mother, the disappointments she suffered, the ultimate joy of having two sons, and her happiness as a mother and grandmother. From trying times to triumphant ones, this scintillating autobiography paints a multi-dimensional portrait of the woman behind the celebrity, beginning each chapter with a letter, photograph, or object that prompts her memories. In Loren’s own words, this is a collection of “unpublished memories, curious anecdotes, tiny secrets told, all of which spring from a box found by chance, a precious treasure trove filled with emotions, experiences, adventures.” Her wise and candid voice speaks from the pages with riveting detail and sharp humor. Yesterday, Today, and Tomorrow is as elegant, entrancing, and memorable as Sophia Loren herself. Book : Music To My Years A Mixtape Memoir Of Growing Up And.
-Titulo Original : Music To My Years A Mixtape Memoir Of Growing Up And Standing Up-Fabricante : Atria Books-Descripcion Original: In this memoir full of humor and heart, comedian, writer, and producer Cristela Alonzo shares personal stories of growing up as a first-generation Mexican-American in Texas and following her dreams to pursue a career in comedy. When Cristela Alonzo and her family lived as squatters in an abandoned diner, they only had two luxuries: a television and a radio, which became her pop cultural touchstone and a guiding light. Cristela shares her experiences and struggles of being a first-generation American, her dreams of becoming a comedian, and how it feels to be a creator in a world that often minimizes people of color and women. Her stories range from the ridiculous-like the time she made her own tap shoes out of bottle caps or how the theme song of The Golden Girls landed her in the principal’s office-to the sobering moments, like how she turned to stand-up comedy to grieve the heartbreaking loss of her mother and how, years later, she’s committed to giving back to the community that helped make her. Each significant moment of the book relates to a song, and the resulting playlist is deeply moving, resonant, and unforgettable. Music to My Years will make you laugh, cry, and even inspire you to make a playlist of your own. Review “If Chance the Rapper and Cristela the Comedian had a baby, it would be this book. Cristela’s memoir is an emotional journey that will make you laugh, cry, and everything in between. As the first Latina woman to create, produce, write, and star in her own prime-time show and who found success despite all the challenges she faced, Cristela will have you continually rooting for her. Also, all the songs she name-drops are real bops.” -Wanda Skyes“Cristela’s real life evolved into her comedy and her comedy informed her sense of right and wrong-but more than anything, Cristela has remained real and funny. Read the book. You’ll understand.” -Whoopi Goldberg“Cristela brings her signature humor to bear as she offers a brilliant and touching reflection on how the personal is political. It is no coincidence that after ruminating on themes that include identity, representation, and inequality, she caps off the book with a fierce defense of our democracy and the people whom it is meant to serve. I was inspired by her story of political awakening and hope others will read this and deepen their own political activism.” -Julian Castro“I loved the book. Cristela vividly enlightens, educates, and entertains us on her hard journey from the poverty and culture of the Mexico-Texas border to stardom, honestly sharing her life lessons and the music that sustained her. [This is] a story that will guide us to want to be as strong, compassionate, and visionary as she is for family, friends, and country. Music is such a big part of one’s life. When we stood on the picket lines, we sang ‘We Shall Overcome’ and ‘This Little Light of Mine’ a thousand times from the early morning till the strikebreakers left the fields. There is so much to say about the book, it affirmed my life in many ways, as I am sure it will for so many Latinas. We are alike.” -Dolores Huerta“Alonzo crafts a humorous writing style that feels like an intimate conversation with readers. The jokes jump off the page and provide an emotional relief to the harsh realities of hardship and poverty she experienced. Alonzo’s memoir is a timely reminder that regardless of economic status, race, or gender, love is the connection that ties together all humanity.” -Booklist About the Author Cristela Alonzo is a comedian, actor, and producer. She was the first Latina to create, produce, and star in her own network sitcom, Cristela. She became the first Latina lead in a Disney Pixar film, Cars 3. Alonzo’s stand-up special, Lower Classy, can be streamed on Netflix. Cristela is an advisory board member for the nonprofit media and culture organization, Define American, and a board member for La Union del Pueblo Entero (LUPE), founded b... -

Book : Trejo My Life Of Crime, Redemption, And Hollywood -..
-Titulo Original : Trejo My Life Of Crime, Redemption, And Hollywood-Fabricante : Atria Books-Descripcion Original: INSTANT NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER “If you’re a fan like I am this is definitely the book for you.” -Pete Davidson, actor, producer, and cast member on Saturday Night Live “Danny’s incredible life story shows that even though we may fall down at some point in our lives, it’s what we do when we stand back up that really counts.” -Robert Rodriguez, creator of Spy Kids, Desperado, and Machete Discover the full, fascinating, and inspirational true story of Danny Trejo’s journey from crime, prison, addiction, and loss-it’s “enough to make you believe in the possibility of a Hollywood ending” (The New York Times Book Review). On screen, Danny Trejo the actor is a baddie who has been killed at least a hundred times. He’s been shot, stabbed, hanged, chopped up, squished by an elevator, and once, was even melted into a bloody goo. Off screen, he’s a hero beloved by recovery communities and obsessed fans alike. But the real Danny Trejo is much more complicated than the legend. Raised in an abusive home, Danny struggled with heroin addiction and stints in some of the country’s most notorious state prisons-including San Quentin and Folsom-from an early age, before starring in such modern classics as Heat, From Dusk till Dawn, and Machete. Now, in this funny, painful, and suspenseful memoir, Danny takes us through the incredible ups and downs of his life, including meeting one of the world’s most notorious serial killers in prison and working with legends like Charles Bronson and Robert De Niro. An honest, unflinching, and “inspirational study in the definition of character” (Kevin Smith, director and actor), Trejo reveals how he managed the horrors of prison, rebuilt himself after finding sobriety and spirituality in solitary confinement, and draws inspiration from the adrenaline-fueled robbing heists of his past for the film roles that made him a household name. He also shares the painful contradictions in his personal life. Although he speaks everywhere from prison yards to NPR about his past to inspire countless others on their own road to recovery and redemption, he struggles to help his children with their personal battles with addiction, and to build relationships that last. Redemptive and painful, poignant and real, Trejo is a portrait of a magnificent life and an unforgettable and exceptional journey. Review An Amazon Best Book of July 2021: Actor Danny Trejo has written not just a memoir but a redemption story worthy of, well, a Hollywood blockbuster. Raised in an abusive home, Trejo was out on the streets committing robberies to feed his drug habit when he was still a youngster, which led to him serving over a decade in prison, in places like Corcoran and Folsom. It was in a prison cell that he had the come-to-Jesus moment he sorely needed. Literally. He recalls, “In that cell, God killed the old me, made a new Danny Trejo, and said, ‘Now let’s see what you do with him.’” What Trejo did with the new Danny involves both Hollywood and working to help others-with addiction, relapse, and recovery-and both aspects are described in a no-holds-barred, honest, grateful, and amusing way that makes Trejo way more moving and illuminating than your average celebrity wandering down memory lane. -Vannessa Cronin, Amazon Book Review Review “A story with compassion and unsparing candor…its enough to make you believe in the possibility of a Hollywood ending.” New York Times Book ReviewThis gripping autobiography recounts a flawed hero’s journey as Trejo digs his way out of tragedy, temptation, and the toxic masculinity of his youth. Trejos true power far exceeds that of his tough-guys roles.” BooklistA raw and deeply engrossing salvation story. Kirkus Reviews“From ex-con to icon. Book : Unguarded - Pippen, Scottie
-Titulo Original : Unguarded-Fabricante : Atria Books-Descripcion Original: INSTANT NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER This unflinching “master class” (The New York Times) of a memoir from two-time Olympic gold medalist and NBA Hall of Famer reveals how Scottie Pippen, the youngest of twelve, overcame two family tragedies and universal disregard by college scouts to become an essential component of the greatest basketball dynasty of the last fifty years.Scottie Pippen has been called one of the greatest NBA players for good reason. Simply put, without Pippen, there are no championship banners-let alone six-hanging from the United Center rafters. There’s no Last Dance documentary. There’s no “Michael Jordan” as we know him. The 1990s Chicago Bulls teams would not exist as we know them. So how did the youngest of twelve go from growing up poor in the small town of Hamburg, Arkansas, enduring two family tragedies along the way, to become a revered NBA legend? How did the scrawny teen, overlooked by every major collegiate basketball program, go on to become the fifth overall pick in the 1987 NBA Draft? And, perhaps most compelling, how did Pippen set aside his ego (and his own limitless professional ceiling) in order for the Bulls to become the most dominant basketball dynasty of the last half century? In Unguarded, the six-time champion and two-time Olympic gold medalist finally opens up to offer pointed and transparent takes on Michael Jordan, Phil Jackson, and Dennis Rodman, among others. Pippen details how he cringed at being labeled Jordan’s sidekick, and discusses how he could have (and should have) received more respect from the Bulls’ management and the media. Pippen reveals never-before-told stories about some of the most famous games in league history, including the 1994 playoff game against the New York Knicks when he took himself out with 1.8 seconds to go. He discusses what it was like dealing with Jordan on a day-to-day basis, while serving as the facilitator for the offense and the anchor for the defense. Pippen is finally giving millions of adoring basketball fans what they crave; an unvarnished, “closely observed, and uncommonly modest” (Kirkus Reviews) look into his life and role within one of the greatest, most popular teams of all time. Review “A master class in settling scores, or creating new ones.”-The New York Times“The Chicago Bulls stalwart tells all-and then some. Pippen also writes evenhandedly of the world outside basketball: “No matter how many championships I have won, and millions I have earned, I never forget the color of my skin and that some people in this world hate me just because of that.” Closely observed and uncommonly modest.”-Kirkus“Pippen offers an intriguing take on one of the NBAs greatest dynasties, [his] youth as the youngest of 12 children in a family ripped by tragedy, and his unlikely ascent to basketball greatness. Expect all the sports talking heads to be in full cry when this much-hyped memoir hits the shelves.”-Booklist About the Author Scottie Pippen played seventeen seasons in the NBA, winning six championships and two Olympic gold medals. He was honored as one of the 50 Greatest Players in NBA History in 1996. Pippen is the only person ever to win an NBA championship and Olympic gold medal twice in the same year. -Titulo Original : Piglet The Unexpected Story Of A Deaf, Blind, Pink Puppy And His Family-Fabricante : Atria Books-Descripcion Original: Named a Best Feel-Good Book by The Washington Post In the tradition of the beloved New York Times bestsellers Marley and Me and Oogy: The Dog Only a Family Could Love, a charming, inspirational memoir about empathy, resilience, kindness, and an adorable deaf blind pink dog. When Connecticut veterinarian Melissa Shapiro gets a call about a tiny deaf blind puppy rescued from a hoarding situation in need of fostering, she doesn’t hesitate to say, “yes.” Little does she know how that decision will transform her, her family, and legions of admirers destined to embrace the saga of the indomitable pink pup. One of the most anxious dogs Melissa had ever encountered, the traumatized Piglet weighed under two pounds upon his welcome into the Shapiro household-which included Melissa’s husband Warren and their three college-aged kids, plus six other rescued dogs. After weeks of reassurance, and lots of love, Piglet connected, gained confidence, and his extraordinary spirit emerged. Melissa soon forged a powerful bond with Piglet, allowing the two to communicate without sound or visual cues. Two months later, when the day arrived to say good-bye to the now dashing, six-pound pink boy dog with the larger than life spirit, Melissa faced a heart-wrenching decision. Could she hand him over to someone willing to give Piglet the full-time attention he required or could she adapt her schedule and her household to make a permanent place for him in her life and work? Of course, the answer was simple: love would find a way. Curious, engaged, and incredibly eager to learn, Piglet quickly became part of the family. What started out as a few simple posts of Piglet and his pack rapidly evolved into a global celebration of Piglet’s infectiously positive mindset. Piglet: The Unexpected Story of a Deaf, Blind, Pink Puppy and His Family fully illustrates this heartwarming story of one special little puppy with a purpose to teach the power of empathy, love, and kindness. Review Named one of the best feel-good books of 2021 by The Washington Post “Piglet is a social media superstar. But before that, he was a two-pound deaf, blind pup without a home. This story will warm your heart and brings to life how this beautiful dog came into the Shaprio family with his own purpose. Through sheer love and dedication, Piglet no longer lives in a world of total darkness. This story touched my heart and soul in such a profound way, as it reminded to me how my sweet, blind, and deaf 5-pound poodle, Emma, is happy, content, and loves her precious life too. -- Laura Schroff, #1 internationally and bestselling author of An Invisible Thread“I never thought I would call a book about a dog and their caring and compassionate humans a page-turner. However, I was wrong and pleasantly surprised that Melissa Shapiros riveting Cinderella story of a tiny deaf blind pink pup called Piglet, who surely would have died had not human hands and hearts intervened, took me on this unexpected joyride. -Titulo Original : 438 Days An Extraordinary True Story Of Survival At Sea-Fabricante : Atria Books-Descripcion Original: Declared “the best survival book in a decade” by Outside Magazine, 438 Days is the true story of the man who survived fourteen months in a small boat drifting seven thousand miles across the Pacific Ocean. On November 17, 2012, two men left the coast of Mexico for a weekend fishing trip in the open Pacific. That night, a violent storm ambushed them as they were fishing eighty miles offshore. As gale force winds and ten-foot waves pummeled their small, open boat from all sides and nearly capsized them, captain Salvador Alvarenga and his crewmate cut away a two-mile-long fishing line and began a desperate dash through crashing waves as they sought the safety of port. Fourteen months later, on January 30, 2014, Alvarenga, now a hairy, wild-bearded and half-mad castaway, washed ashore on a nearly deserted island on the far side of the Pacific. He could barely speak and was unable to walk. He claimed to have drifted from Mexico, a journey of some seven thousand miles. A “gripping saga,” (Daily Mail), 438 Days is the first-ever account of one of the most amazing survival stories in modern times. Based on dozens of hours of exclusive interviews with Alvarenga, his colleagues, search-and-rescue officials, the remote islanders who found him, and the medical team that saved his life, 438 Days is not only “an intense, immensely absorbing read” (Booklist) but an unforgettable study of the resilience, will, ingenuity and determination required for one man to survive more than a year lost and adrift at sea. Things My Son Needs to Know About the World collects the personal dispatches from the front lines of one of the most daunting experiences any man can experience: fatherhood. As he conveys his profound awe at experiencing all the “firsts” that fill him with wonder and catch him completely unprepared, Fredrik Backman doesn’t shy away from revealing his own false steps and fatherly flaws, tackling issues both great and small, from masculinity and mid-life crises to practical jokes and poop. In between the sleep-deprived lows and wonderful highs, Backman takes a step back to share the true story of falling in love with a woman who is his complete opposite, and learning to live a life that revolves around the people you care about unconditionally. Alternating between humorous side notes and longer essays offering his son advice as he grows up and ventures out into the world, Backman relays the big and small lessons in life, including: -How to find the team you belong to -Why airports explain everything about religion and war -The reason starting a band is crucial to cultivating and keeping friendships -How to beat Monkey Island 3 -Why, sometimes, a dad might hold onto his son’s hand just a little too tight This is an irresistible and insightful collection, perfect for new parents and fans of Backman’s “unparalleled understanding of human nature” (Shelf Awareness). As he eloquently reminds us, “You can be whatever you want to be, but that’s nowhere near as important as knowing that you can be exactly who you are.” Review Delightful, thoughtful essays on fatherhood…Parents-especially fathers-will appreciate Backman’s witty and touching lessons.” Publishers Weekly“Each chapter is filled with Backman’s dry wit and brutal honesty, but behind all of the humor is real, heartfelt sentiment and poignant advice. Book : Out Of The Pocket Football, Fatherhood, And College..
-Titulo Original : Out Of The Pocket Football, Fatherhood, And College Gameday Saturdays-Fabricante : Atria Books-Descripcion Original: This powerfully intimate, plain-spoken memoir about fathers and sons, fortitude, and football from the face and voice of college football-Kirk Herbstreit-is not just “a window into the game, but also a peek into what makes him special: his heart” (David Shaw, head coach, Stanford University).Kirk Herbstreit is a reflection of the sport he loves, a reflection of his football-crazed home state of Ohio, where he was a high school star and Ohio State captain, and a reflection of another Ohio State football captain thirty-two years earlier: his dad Jim, who battled Alzheimer’s disease until his death in 2016. In Out of the Pocket, Herbstreit does what his father did for him: takes you inside the locker rooms, to the practice fields, to the meeting rooms, to the stadiums. Herbstreit describes how a combination of hard work, perseverance, and a little luck landed him on the set of ESPN’s iconic College GameDay show, surrounded by tens of thousands of fans who treat their Saturdays like a football Mardi Gras. He takes you into the television production meetings, on to the GameDay set, and into the broadcast booth. You’ll live his life during a football season, see the things he sees, experience every chaotic twist and turn as the year unfolds. Not to mention the relationships he’s established and the insights he’s learned from the likes of coaches and players such as Nick Saban, Tim Tebow, Dabo Swinney, and Peyton Manning, as well as his colleagues, including Chris Fowler, Rece Davis, and his “second dad,” the beloved Coach Lee Corso. Yes, Kirk Herbstreit is the undeniable face and voice of college football-but he’s also a survivor. He’s the quiet kid who withstood the collapse of his parents’ marriage. The boy who endured too many overbearing stepdads and stepmoms. The painfully shy student who always chose the last desk in the last row of the classroom. The young man who persevered through a frustrating Ohio State playing career. The new college graduate who turned down a lucrative sales job after college to pursue a “no way you’ll make it” dream career in broadcasting. Inspiring and powerful, Out of the Pocket “proves the importance of perseverance and family” (Peyton Manning). Review “It takes tremendous perseverance to accomplish your goals. Kirks hard work and dedication to his craft, along with his class and professionalism, has enabled him to become one of the most trusted analysts in college football. Herbie is a great friend who has been an equally terrific mentor to me personally, relative to media relations. His career and life are a perfect example of what happens when you dont let others define you or what you can achieve.”-Nick Saban, Head Coach, University of Alabama“Kirk and I come from football families. I always knew about his love and knowledge of the game. But now I know the story behind that love of football. Once again, it proves the importance of perseverance and family.-Peyton Manning, member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame, and College Football Hall of Fame“One of my favorite things about Kirk is that every time we speak, we talk about football AND our families. Our dads were both assistant coaches and he and I were taught a lot of the same lessons. Kirks book is a window into the game, but also a peek into what makes him special: his heart.-David Shaw, Head Coach, Stanford University“Herbstreit’s story here is deeply personal-absent father, impoverishment, conflicts with fellow broadcasters-while also sharing enough insights into the college game, and into the broadcasting world, to gladden the heart of any college-football geek.” -Booklist“A pleasantly self-effacing, immersive look at both sports and sportscasting.”-Kirkus What Out of the Pocket delivers is uncommon honesty. -Patriot-News About the Author Kirk Herbstreit joined ESPN in 1995, establishing himself as the face and voice of college football, both as a member of the critically acclaimed... -

Book : Heart And Steel - Cowher, Bill
-Titulo Original : Heart And Steel-Fabricante : Atria Books-Descripcion Original: A poignant, inspirational story about football, family, and love from Bill Cowher, the Super Bowl-winning, Hall-of-Fame Pittsburgh Steelers coach, and cohost of CBS’s The NFL Today. Long before the Lombardi Trophy, the Golden Hall of Fame jacket, and successful TV career, legendary head coach Bill Cowher was simply “Billy from Crafton.” Born and raised just fifteen minutes from old Three Rivers Stadium, it was in Crafton where the foundation of Cowher’s irrepressible work ethic, passion for teaching, and love of football and the Pittsburgh Steelers were built. Now, for the first time, Cowher will shine a light on a life filled with success, achieved through will and resilience in situations which, often times, appeared to be hopeless. In Heart and Steel, Cowher will take you on his journey from childhood to the undersized, mohawked, disco-dancing North Carolina State linebacker, to fighting for a spot as a “bubble player” with the Browns and Eagles, before injuries ended his playing career. Bill will discuss how that same drive led to his big coaching break, running Special Teams for Marty Schottenheimer and the Cleveland Browns at just twenty-seven-years-old, before taking over the Pittsburgh Steelers just seven years later. Cowher will reveal exclusive, never-before-told anecdotes and candid thoughts on the biggest games, players, and moments that defined his fifteen-year Steelers tenure. But this is more than a “football story.” In 2010, Bill lost his beloved wife, Kaye, and father, Laird, within three months of one another. It forced him, yet again, to summon that resiliency to unearth a stronger version of himself-not only so he could march on, but to add a deeper level to the loving, supportive father his three daughters had always known. Cowher’s learned many lessons in his life; as a father, grandfather, husband, coach, and broadcaster. He will show you how you can continue to grow by embracing transition, personally and professionally, through renewed perspective and social consciousness. “Billy from Crafton” has come a long way. Through love and conviction, Cowher’s achieved more than he ever could have dreamed of. You can, too, with the same heart and steel. About the Author Bill Cowher coached the Pittsburgh Steelers from 1992 through 2006, winning Super Bowl XL. He’s one of only two coaches in NFL history to lead his team to the playoffs in each of his first six seasons and, at the time, was the youngest coach to ever a lead a team to the Super Bowl. Chapter 1: Billy from Crafton 1 Billy from Crafton As far back as I can remember, I was always surrounded by people who were passionate about one of two things: work or sports. For me, as early as nine years old, it was both. I embraced work so I’d be free to play all the games I found irresistible. I didn’t think there was anything unusual about the lives and routines of the families around me, because that was life for kids in the 1960s and ’70s of my Pittsburgh neighborhood. We were tireless grade-schoolers in the working-class area of Crafton, and we treated our games like our full-time jobs. My family lived in a brick Victorian on Hawthorne Avenue. It was a street where PAT buses-public city buses in Pittsburgh-would sometimes wait until the end of a play before driving through our pickup football games. By examining each murder within the context of Indigenous identity and regional hardships, McDiarmid addresses these very issues, finding reasons to look for the deeper roots of each act of violence.” -The New York Times Book Review In the vein of the bestsellers I’ll Be Gone in the Dark and The Line Becomes a River, a penetrating, deeply moving account of the missing and murdered indigenous women and girls of Highway 16, and a searing indictment of the society that failed them. For decades, Indigenous women and girls have gone missing or been found murdered along an isolated stretch of highway in northwestern British Columbia. The corridor is known as the Highway of Tears, and it has come to symbolize a national crisis. Journalist Jessica McDiarmid meticulously investigates the devastating effect these tragedies have had on the families of the victims and their communities, and how systemic racism and indifference have created a climate in which Indigenous women and girls are overpoliced yet underprotected. McDiarmid interviews those closest to the victims-mothers and fathers, siblings and friends-and provides an intimate firsthand account of their loss and unflagging fight for justice. Examining the historically fraught social and cultural tensions between settlers and Indigenous peoples in the region, McDiarmid links these cases to others across Canada-now estimated to number up to four thousand-contextualizing them within a broader examination of the undervaluing of Indigenous lives in the country. Highway of Tears is a piercing exploration of our ongoing failure to provide justice for the victims and a testament to their families’ and communities’ unwavering determination to find it. Review “Powerful . . . [McDiarmid], writing with deeply felt emotion, makes it abundantly clear that this racism persists today [and] brings to light a little-known story that deserves more attention.” -Kirkus Reviews“This moving, well-sourced book is essential reading for anyone who cares about social injustice.” -Publishers WeeklyMcDiarmids touching, poignant account intricately details the backgrounds of many of the victims, and their families and loved ones. Prologue Prologue I first met the Duke of Edinburgh in the late 1970s. He was in his mid-fifties and no longer the dashing polo-playing prince, simply a man in a suit. I was one of a group of girls involved in raising monies for a theater of which Prince Philip was a patron, and we went backstage afterward to meet him. He was charming, polite, and funny, and only now when looking back do I realize how wary he must have been of being photographed with a bunch of young girls. The next time I met him was in Amman, in March 1984. I had moved on from PR and was working for Majesty magazine. He was with Queen Elizabeth on a state visit to the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan as guests of King Hussein and Queen Noor. On the first afternoon there was a reception for the royal press corps, of which I was one, to meet Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip-this was standard in those days. As we walked into the British Embassy, all of us visiting media journalists and some of the heavy-hitting Middle East foreign correspondents lined up to shake hands as if we were at an old-fashioned wedding reception. I clearly remember the master of ceremonies calling out Ingrid Seward from Hanover Magazines, who then published Majesty. It was my first royal tour and I hadn’t a clue what to do, so I just stuck around Michael Shea, Queen Elizabeth’s press secretary, who told me where to stand and wait to be introduced to the Queen. Before this happened I was approached by an equerry who said to me, “His Royal Highness the Duke of Edinburgh would like to meet you.” I nodded vaguely, and before I could do anything, Prince Philip walked up to me and asked me in his crisp, dry voice if I was German. I suppose with a name like Ingrid and working for an organization called Hanover Magazines it was a possibility. As soon as I replied in the negative, he turned on his heel and walked away. I was humiliated-I couldn’t understand what I had done, but I later learned it was standard behavior for the duke. According to behavio... -

Book : Jimmy Buffett A Good Life All The Way - White, Ryan
-Titulo Original : Jimmy Buffett A Good Life All The Way-Fabricante : Atria Books-Descripcion Original: A candid, compelling, and rollicking portrait of the pirate captain of Margaritaville-Jimmy Buffett. In Jimmy Buffett: A Good Life All the Way, acclaimed music critic Ryan White has crafted the first definitive account of Buffett’s rise from singing songs for beer to his emergence as a tropical icon and CEO behind the Margaritaville industrial complex, a vast network of merchandise, chain restaurants, resorts, and lifestyle products all inspired by his sunny but disillusioned hit “Margaritaville.” Filled with interviews from friends, musicians, Coral Reefer Band members past and present, and business partners who were there, this book is a top-down joyride with plenty of side trips and meanderings from Mobile and Pascagoula to New Orleans, Key West, down into the islands aboard the Euphoria and the Euphoria II, and into the studios and onto the stages where the foundation of Buffett’s reputation was laid. Buffett wasn’t always the pied piper of beaches, bars, and laid-back living. Born on the Gulf Coast, the son of a son of a sailing ship captain, Buffett scuffed around New Orleans in the late sixties, flunked out of Nashville (and a marriage) in 1971, and found refuge among the artists, dopers, shrimpers, and genuine characters who’d collected at the end of the road in Key West. And it was there, in those waning outlaw days at the last American exit, where Buffett, like Hemingway before him, found his voice and eventually brought to life the song that would launch Parrot Head nation. And just where is Margaritaville? It’s wherever it’s five o’clock; it’s wherever there’s a breeze and salt in the air; and it’s wherever Buffett sets his bare feet, smiles, and sings his songs. Review “A buoyant new Jimmy Buffett biography sings. . . . [White interviewed] dozens of Buffett’s fellow Key West, Florida, barflies, record producers, bandmates, friends, and business associates, and the portrait that emerges is affectionate and admiring but devoid of Parrot Head fawning-the proper key for such a bio. It helps that White’s prose bears a music of its own, vividly evoking Buffett’s formative journey from Mobile, Alabama, to New Orleans, to Nashville, and then to Key West.” -GARDEN & GUNA gifted storyteller with a beat reporters nose for hidden details, Ryan White has crafted a definitive portrait of one of Americas most potent cultural icons. And yet this is so much more than an account of sandy-footed slacker king Jimmy Buffett. Its also a peek into the yearning heart of overworked Americans searching for their own shaker of salt and helping drive the fantasy that turned Buffetts tequila-stunned 1977 smash ‘Margaritaville’ into the keystone of a multi-billion dollar leisure industry. -Peter Ames Carlin, New York Times bestselling author of Bruce “Finally-a full-length Jimmy Buffett bio that’s accurate and entertaining. Ryan White captures a life of creativity, of strumming songs, taking care of business, and of owning the stage while dancing to the bank. Great writing makes for great reading, and this book outshines all earlier looks at Buffett’s career and lifestyle. White has interviewed dozens of the man’s colleagues, influences and guides, and asked all the right questions. Now we get to enjoy new insights and correct info right down to the sunburn. Thank goodness for Ryan White. He delivers a fine tale and, like Buffett, super entertainment. - Tom Corcoran, author of Crime Almost Pays and The Quick Adios (Times Six).“White unravels the tale of America’s favorite pirate with journalistic vigor and an ear for the poetic detail. It turns out that Jimmy Buffett’s real story is an interesting and wild as the countless myths and legends that have grown around him.” -Hayes Carll, Grammy-nominated singer-songwriter “Ryan White has written a highly entertaining and very informative book about Jimmy Buffett; one that manages to go well beyond the mythology and legends while still giving them their jus... -

Book : Devils Knot The True Story Of The West Memphis Three.
-Titulo Original : Devils Knot The True Story Of The West Memphis Three-Fabricante : Atria Books-Descripcion Original: *A MAJOR MOTION PICTURE STARRING REESE WITHERSPOON AND COLIN FIRTH* The West Memphis Three. Accused, convicted…and set free. Do you know their story? In 2011, one of the greatest miscarriages of justice in American legal history was set right when Damien Echols, Jason Baldwin, and Jessie Misskelley were released after eighteen years in prison. Award-winning journalist Mara Leveritt’s The Devil’s Knot remains the most comprehensive, insightful reporting ever done on the investigation, trials, and convictions of three teenage boys who became known as the West Memphis Three. For weeks in 1993, after the murders of three eight-year-old boys, police in West Memphis, Arkansas seemed stymied. Then suddenly, detectives charged three teenagers-alleged members of a satanic cult-with the killings. Despite the witch-hunt atmosphere of the trials, and a case which included stunning investigative blunders, a confession riddled with errors, and an absence of physical evidence linking any of the accused to the crime, the teenagers were convicted. Jurors sentenced Jason Baldwin and Jessie Misskelley to life in prison and Damien Echols, the accused ringleader, to death. The guilty verdicts were popular in their home state-even upheld on appeal-and all three remained in prison until their unprecedented release in August 2011.With close-up views of its key participants, this award-winning account unravels the many tangled knots of this endlessly shocking case, one which will shape the American legal landscape for years to come. Review Brutal, riveting....The true horror of Leveritts well-written book is that this barely believable fate could potentially befall any American. -- Henry RollinsThe abuses of the criminal justice system shown here are so blatant-and so profoundly tragic-that they would be hard to believe were it not for the depth and even-handedness of Mara Leveritts reporting. -- Sister Helen Prejean author of Dead Man WalkingDevils Knot becomes the best horror novel youve ever read, one of those that leaves you wondering what new sick dread might be lying in wait on the next page...The monster Leveritt reveals in the end, however, is more terrifying than even the fork-tailed boogeymen conjured by West Memphis police and prosecutors to fit their crime. What Leveritt reveals to us is the most horrible fiend a rational person can imagine when matters of life and death are at stake: the Specter of Doubt. Arkansas TimesThe chronology [of Devils Knot] is the first time all elements of the case have been assembled in one narrative, which offers surprises, even for those familiar with the events. As such, it is a true public service. Arkansas Democrat GazetteAn affecting account of a controversial trial...Leveritts carefully researched book offers a riveting portrait of a down-at-the-heels, socially conservative rural town with more than its share of corruption and violence. Publishers WeeklyWell written in descriptive language, Devils Knot is an indictment of a culture and legal system that failed to protect children as defendants or victims. Highly recommended. Library Journal About the Author Mara Leveritt has won several awards for investigative journalism, including Arkansass Booker Worthen Prize for her book The Boys on the Tracks. She is also author of The Mena File, Dark Spell, and Devils Knot. A contributing editor to the Arkansas Times, she lives in Little Rock...

An urgent call to fellow Americans to open their eyes to the immigration crisis and understand that it affects us all, this honest and heartrending memoir paints a vivid portrait of how we got here and what it means to be a survivor, a feminist, a citizen, and a journalist who owns her voice while striving for the truth. Book : The Storm On Our Shores One Island, Two Soldiers, And
-Titulo Original : The Storm On Our Shores One Island, Two Soldiers, And The Forgotten Battle Of World War Ii-Fabricante : Atria Books-Descripcion Original: This “engrossing” (The Wall Street Journal) national bestseller and true “heartbreaking tale of tragedy and redemption” (Hampton Sides, bestselling author of Ghost Soldiers) reveals how a discovered diary-found during a brutal World War II battle-changed our war-torn society’s perceptions of Japan.May 1943. The Battle of Attu-called “The Forgotten Battle” by World War II veterans-was raging on the Aleutian island with an Arctic cold, impenetrable fog, and rocketing winds that combined to create some of the worst weather on Earth. Both American and Japanese forces tirelessly fought in a yearlong campaign, with both sides suffering thousands of casualties. Included in this number was a Japanese medic whose war diary would lead a Silver Star-winning American soldier to find solace for his own tortured soul. The doctor’s name was Paul Nobuo Tatsuguchi, a Hiroshima native who had graduated from college and medical school in California. He loved America, but was called to enlist in the Imperial Army of his native Japan. Heartsick, wary of war, yet devoted to Japan, Tatsuguchi performed his duties and kept a diary of events as they unfolded-never knowing that it would be found by an American soldier named Dick Laird. Laird, a hardy, resilient underground coal miner, enlisted in the US Army to escape the crushing poverty of his native Appalachia. In a devastating mountainside attack in Alaska, Laird was forced to make a fateful decision, one that saved him and his comrades, but haunted him for years. Tatsuguchi’s diary was later translated and distributed among US soldiers. It showed the common humanity on both sides of the battle. But it also ignited fierce controversy that is still debated today. After forty years, Laird was determined to return it to the family and find peace with Tatsuguchi’s daughter, Laura Tatsuguchi Davis. Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Mark Obmascik “writes with tremendous grace about a forgotten part of our history, telling the same story from two opposing points of view-perhaps the only way warfare can truly be understood” (Helen Thorpe, author of Soldier Girls). Review “Here is a part of World War II that most of us not only forgot-we never knew it happened in the first place. Mark Obmascik has deftly rescued an important story from the margins of our history-and from our countrys most forbidding frontier. Deeply researched and feelingly told, The Storm On Our Shores is a heartbreaking tale of tragedy and redemption.”-Hampton Sides, bestselling author of Ghost Soldiers, In the Kingdom of Ice, and On Desperate Ground“A riveting true tale of a soldier’s lost diary, The Storm on Our Shores is a vital reminder of grace, forgiveness and the power of words to heal.” -Ruth Ozeki, author of A Tale for the Time Being“Mark Obmascik is a master storyteller. He writes with tremendous grace about a forgotten part of our history, telling the same story from two opposing points of view-perhaps the only way warfare can truly be understood. He brings to life in gritty detail the enormity of the sacrifices made on both sides of the conflict, and thus enables us to appreciate the terrible price of war anew.”- Helen Thorpe, author of Soldier Girls, The Newcomers, and Just Like Us“Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Obmascik . . . serves up a moving, intimate tale of two men, two families, and two countries that intersected at the forgotten WWII battle of Attu. . . . -Titulo Original : The Babysitter My Summers With A Serial Killer-Fabricante : Atria Books-Descripcion Original: This chilling true story and “harrowing account of the evil that can lurk around the edges of girlhood” (Carolyn Murnick, author of The Hot One)-reminiscent of Ann Rule’s classic The Stranger Beside Me-follows a little girl longing for love who finds friendship with her charismatic babysitter, unaware that he is a vicious serial killer.Growing up on Cape Cod in the 1960s, Liza Rodman was a lonely little girl. During the summers, while her mother worked days in a local motel and danced most nights in the Provincetown bars, her babysitter-the kind, handsome handyman at the motel where her mother worked-took her and her sister on adventures in his truck. He bought them popsicles and together, they visited his “secret garden” in the Truro woods. To Liza, he was one of the few kind, understanding, and safe adults in her life. But there was one thing she didn’t know; their babysitter was a serial killer. Though Tony Costa’s gruesome case made screaming headlines in 1969 and beyond, Liza never made the connection between her friendly babysitter and the infamous killer of numerous women, including four in Massachusetts, until decades later. Haunted by nightmares and horrified by what she learned, Liza became obsessed with the case. Now, she and cowriter Jennifer Jordan reveal “a suspenseful portrayal of murderous madness in tandem with a child’s growing loneliness, neglect, and despair, a narrative collision that will haunt” (Sarah Weinman, author of The Real Lolita) you long after you finish it. Shelf AwarenessContinues a tradition started by Ann Rule’s The Stranger Beside Me...and is a compelling, sensitive hybrid of memoir and true crime...straightforward, unwavering in its clarity. The IndependentI was utterly captivated by The Babysitter, a hybrid memoir & true crime investigation of the heinous crimes of a Cape Cod serial killer who also happened to be the only adult young Liza Rodman felt safe with. Rodman and Jordans book skillfully weaves a suspenseful portrayal of murderous madness in tandem with a childs growing loneliness, neglect, and despair, a narrative collision that will haunt me, and readers, for years. -- Sarah Weinman, author of The Real Lolita and editor of Unspeakable Acts: True Tales of Crime, Murder, Deceit and ObsessionThe Babysitter is a gripping read that’s impossible to put down: a string of gristly murders, a cast of charismatic, often abusive, and occasionally pathological characters, a comically incompetent police force, and an astute child’s perspective on the adults in her life. More profoundly, it raises questions about how children manage to adapt and survive in a world in which love, attention, and violence are inextricably intertwined. -- Helen Fremont, bestselling author of The Escape Artist and After Long SilenceLike a real-life horror movie, The Babysitter is a harrowing account of the evil that can lurk around the edges of girlhood. -- Carolyn Murnick, author of The Hot OneBrilliantly researched and hauntingly rendered, The Babysitter is a deeply inquisitive examination of what it means to live and grow on the outside of violence, of danger. As generous as it is chilling, this impressive and startling narrative orbits the realms of meditation, fact, and memory. ...
