I started drawing as far back as I can remember, at the age of four or five. My brothers drew, and I guess in a way I was mimicking them. I found I enjoyed the act of putting marks on paper. It gave me a way of creating my own space and quiet time, as well as a way of expressing myself. You can imagine six children competing for attention and to be heard. I would sit, watching and drawing. In first grade I had the opportunity to draw a large picture of a fire engine on the blackboard. I was complimented and encouraged to draw more. The attention felt good, and I wanted more. I was not a terrific reader or adept speller in my growing-up years, and I felt insecure in those areas. Book : Christmas Day In The Morning - Buck, Pearl S

-Titulo Original : Christmas Day In The Morning-Fabricante : HarperCollins-Descripcion Original: From Booklist Gr. 3-6, younger for reading aloud. This inspiring story by a Nobel and Pulitzer Prize-winning author is reissued for the first time since 1955 with the oil paintings by the artist of Fannys Dream (1996). Buck invests a simple story with poetic dignity and teaches a bone-deep lesson about love. On Christmas, a middle-aged man remembers a holiday morning when he was 15 and his farm family was just scraping by. Having overheard a conversation in which his father proclaimed his love, the teenager decides to do something special for Dad. The boy gets up very early on Christmas morning and does all the milking before his father arises, discovering that that love makes labor light. Buehners paintings enhance the story, capturing the deep blue-white of a snowy farmland, punctuated by golden light spilling from windows, a pool of light from the boys lantern as he goes to the barn, and the simplicity of a turn-of-the-century farmhouse interior. A beautiful Christmas message, powerfully delivered. Connie Fletcher Copyright © American Library Association. All rights reserved From Pulitzer and Nobel Prize-winning author Pearl S. Buck and acclaimed artist Mark Buehner comes a heartwarming story that illustrates the true meaning of Christmas. Rob wants to get his father something special for Christmas this year-something that shows how much he really loves him. But its Christmas Eve, and he doesnt have much money to spend. What could he possibly get? Suddenly, Rob thinks of the best gift of all... The acclaimed author of nearly a hundred books for children and adults, Pearl S. Buck captures the spirit of Christmas in this elegant, heartening story about a boys gift of love. Originally published in 1955, this timeless story with glorious full-color art by Mark Buehner will be a welcome addition to your holiday collection. From Publishers Weekly Published in 1955 and appearing for the first time as a picture book, this modest holiday tale from the author of The Good Earth might well have been called The Good Son. On Christmas Eve, a man recalls the holiday many years ago when he gave his father, a struggling farmer, a most-appreciated gift: the boy rose extra early to do his fathers biggest chore, the milking. Bucks understated yet moving piece, paired with a sentimental note from the illustrator, will resonate with readers. Buehners (Snowmen at Night) inky, starlit winter skies and rustic barn revealed by lantern light transport readers to a hushed and humble setting. All ages. Copyright 2002 Reed Business Information, Inc. From School Library Journal Grade 3-5-Originally published in 1955, this story has been illustrated and brought to life for a new generation. A man remembers a great discovery he made when he was 15 and living on his fathers farm. A few days before Christmas he overhears his dad saying how much he hates having to wake his son at dawn for morning chores. As a special gift for his father, the boy gets up at a quarter to three on Christmas morning and does the milking by himself. Buehner illustrates these scenes, many taking place at night and illuminated by lanterns or by moonlight, with a sturdy, folksy, old-fashioned solidity. The hard life on a farm, the struggle to keep the family and animals warm and fed, is reflected on the parents faces. Moving and tender, this is a fine choice for reading aloud or family sharing.-S. P. Copyright 2002 Reed Business Information, Inc. This stirring and unforgettable novel from renowned author Katherine Applegate celebrates the transformative power of unexpected friendships. Inspired by the true story of a captive gorilla known as Ivan, this illustrated novel is told from the point of view of Ivan himself. Having spent 27 years behind the glass walls of his enclosure in a shopping mall, Ivan has grown accustomed to humans watching him. He hardly ever thinks about his life in the jungle. Instead, Ivan occupies himself with television, his friends Stella and Bob, and painting. But when he meets Ruby, a baby elephant taken from the wild, he is forced to see their home, and his art, through new eyes. The One and Only Ivan was hailed as a best book of the year by Kirkus, School Library Journal, and Amazon, demonstrating it is a true classic in the making. In the tradition of timeless stories like Charlottes Web and Stuart Little, Katherine Applegate blends humor and poignancy to create Ivans unforgettable first-person narration in a story of friendship, art, and hope. An authors note depicts the differences between the fictional story and true events. From the Author When I started to write about the grim facts of the real Ivans solitary existence, a new tale slowly began to take shape. At least on the page, where anything is possible, I wanted to give Ivan (even while captive behind the walls of his tiny cage) a voice of his own and a story to tell. For more about the book, visit theoneandonlyivan . From the Back Cover Ivan is an easygoing gorilla. Living at the Exit 8 Big Top Mall and Video Arcade, he has grown accustomed to humans watching him through the glass walls of his domain. He rarely misses his life in the jungle. In fact, he hardly ever thinks about it at all. Instead, Ivan thinks about TV shows he’s seen and about his friends Stella, an elderly elephant, and Bob, a stray dog. But mostly Ivan thinks about art and how to capture the taste of a mango or the sound of leaves with color and a well-placed line. Then he meets Ruby, a baby elephant taken from her family, and she makes Ivan see their home-and his own art-through new eyes. When Ruby arrives, change come...

Book : Hidden Figures The True Story Of Four Black Women And

-Titulo Original : Hidden Figures The True Story Of Four Black Women And The Space Race-Fabricante : HarperCollins-Descripcion Original: Based on the New York Times bestselling book and the Academy Award-nominated movie, author Margot Lee Shetterly and Coretta Scott King Illustrator Honor Award winner Laura Freeman bring the incredibly inspiring true story of four black women who helped NASA launch men into space to picture book readers! Dorothy Vaughan, Mary Jackson, Katherine Johnson, and Christine Darden were good at math…really good. They participated in some of NASAs greatest successes, like providing the calculations for Americas first journeys into space. And they did so during a time when being black and a woman limited what they could do. But they worked hard. They persisted. And they used their genius minds to change the world. In this beautifully illustrated picture book edition, we explore the story of four female African American mathematicians at NASA, known as colored computers, and how they overcame gender and racial barriers to succeed in a highly challenging STEM-based career. Finally, the extraordinary lives of four African American women who helped NASA put the first men in space is available for picture book readers, proclaims Brightly in their article 18 Must-Read Picture Books of 2018. Will inspire girls and boys alike to love math, believe in themselves, and reach for the stars. From School Library Journal K-Gr 2-Shetterly introduces young readers to the inspirational and groundbreaking stories of Dorothy Vaughan, Mary Jackson, Katherine Johnson, and Christine Darden, and their once-hidden contributions to science, aeronautics, and space exploration. Shetterly expertly puts these womens achievements in their historical context: segregation, blatant sexism and racism in the workplace, the civil rights movement, and the space race. Despite the challenges these women faced, they persisted, worked hard, and put a man on the moon. In this picture book take, the text, at times, reads a bit clinical and its occasionally difficult to distinguish one womans characteristics from anothers while reading. This is remedied with the handy time line of short profiles in the back matter. Freemans full-color illustrations are stunning and chock-full of details, incorporating diagrams, mathematical formulas, and space motifs throughout (including the womens clothing and jewelry), enhancing the whole book. VERDICT An essential purchase for elementary school and public libraries.-Megan Kilgallen, Packer Collegiate Institute, Brooklyn Review “In Shetterly and Conkling’s approachable text, the reader is introduced to four hidden figures and given a broad look at the United States’ history of segregation and fight for civil rights. Freeman’s illustrations are striking, featuring bold, fully saturated colors. Feels as fresh as the original. Delightful and informative.” - Shelf Awareness “An important story to tell about four heroines, one that will lead young readers to the longer, more-nuanced coverage available when they are ready.” - Kirkus Reviews About the Author Margot Lee Shetterly grew up in Hampton, Virginia, where she knew many of the women in her book Hidden Figures. She is an Alfred P. Sloan Foundation Fellow and the recipient of a Virginia Foundation for the Humanities grant for her research on women in computing. She lives in Charlottesville, Virginia. Laura Freeman received her BFA from the School of Visual Arts in New York City and began her career illustrating for various editorial clients. Laura has illustrated many fine children’s books over the years, including Fancy Party Gowns: The Story of Fashion Designer Ann Cole Lowe, written by Deborah Blumenthal, and the Coretta Scott King Honor Book Hidden Figures: The True Story of Four Black Women and the Space Race, by Margot Lee Shetterly. Full of explosive magic, searing romance, and heartbreaking betrayal, this series from the award-winning and bestselling author of the Shatter Me series is perfect for fans of Leigh Bardugo, Sabaa Tahir, and Tomi Adeyemi. With the heat of a kiss, the walls between Alizeh, the long-lost heir to an ancient Jinn kingdom, and Kamran, the crown prince of the Ardunian empire, have crumbled. And so have both of their lives. Alizeh, the heir to the Jinn throne, is destined to free her people from the half-lives they’ve been forced to live under human rule. Kamran’s grandfather lays dead at the hand of Cyrus, ruler of the neighboring kingdom of Tulan. Cyrus has stolen Alizeh away to his homeland and plans to marry her there, giving her everything she needs to become the Jinn queen-and when she assumes the throne he will have fulfilled his own bargain with the devil. Alizeh wants nothing to do with Cyrus’s deal or the devil. But without a way to escape Tulan, and with the fulfillment of her own destiny tantalizingly close, she’ll have to decide whether she can set aside her emotions to become the queen her people need. Kamran, meanwhile, is picking up the pieces in Ardunia. Facing betrayal at every turn, all he knows is that he must go to Tulan to avenge his grandfather. He can only hope that Alizeh will be waiting for him there-and that she hasn’t yet become the queen of Tulan.
