Book : See You At Harrys - Knowles, Jo

-Titulo Original : See You At Harrys-Fabricante : Candlewick-Descripcion Original: “Completely, tragically believable situations elevate this sad, gripping tale to a must-read level.” - Kirkus Reviews (starred review)Starting middle school brings all the usual challenges for twelve-year-old Fern. She feels invisible - until the unthinkable happens, and Fern feels not only more alone than ever, but also responsible for the tragedy that has wrenched her family apart. Nothing will ever be the same - but can Fern and her family find a way to heal? Review SEE YOU AT HARRYS offers, on the one hand, a deft and delicate handling of commonplace traumas - how to negotiate bullying on the school bus, what it means for everyone in a family when a teenager comes to terms with his sexuality - and, on the other, the enormous and mercifully rare drama of a child’s accidental death. And while the distinction between these narrative elements - their disparate weights - may seem to an adult huge, Knowles is aware that a child’s perspective is somewhat different.-The New York TimesSit back in a comfortable chair, bring on the Kleenex and cry your heart out... Prescient writing, fully developed characters and completely, tragically believable situations elevate this sad, gripping tale to a must-read level. -Kirkus Reviews (starred review)This novel is reminiscent of classics like LITTLE WOMEN in its exploration of the often difficult, always powerful bond among siblings. Despite its classic, timeless themes, however, it also touches on such contemporary issues as the dangers of bullying and sexual orientation... Young readers will eagerly turn the pages of this perfectly paced novel and will care deeply about what happens to Fern and her siblings. The story is so authentic and captivating that readers will come to love Fern’s family and feel a part of it. When tragedy strikes, readers will feel the blow almost as intensely as the family does. Readers will savor every bite of this bittersweet novel.-VOYAThrough the eyes of Fern, Knowles introduces a cast of distinct, fully developed characters who exhibit authentic emotions, foibles, and expressions of love. Readers will feel deeply for the family in the aftermath of the plots heart-wrenching turn, which pulls them closer together.-Publishers WeeklyHighly recommended for readers dealing with their own grief issues, but any teen can benefit from the reminder that family can be simultaneously humiliating and invaluable.-BooklistThis is a powerful, spare portrait of a flawed but loving family that experiences the unthinkable-and survives.-The Horn BookKnowles paints a moving and authentic picture of a family grieving.-School Library JournalThis simple, sad, sweet book deals with many issues but does not overwhelm the reader. Knowles conveys grief, family relationships, friendship, and teen angst with dexterity and sensitivity. This is a must for middle grade collections where heartbreak is always a hot topic.-Library Media ConnectionSometimes your heart has to break before it can heal.SEE YOU AT HARRYS will make you weep, but it will also fill your soul with the extravagant gift of love. Book : Hour Of The Bees - Eagar, Lindsay

-Titulo Original : Hour Of The Bees-Fabricante : Candlewick-Descripcion Original: What does it mean to be fully alive? Magic blends with reality in a stunning coming-of-age novel about a girl, a grandfather, wanderlust, and reclaiming your roots.Things are only impossible if you stop to think about them. . . .While her friends are spending their summers having pool parties and sleepovers, twelve-year-old Carolina - Carol - is spending hers in the middle of the New Mexico desert, helping her parents move the grandfather she’s never met into a home for people with dementia. At first, Carol avoids prickly Grandpa Serge. But as the summer wears on and the heat bears down, Carol finds herself drawn to him, fascinated by the crazy stories he tells her about a healing tree, a green-glass lake, and the bees that will bring back the rain and end a hundred years of drought. As the thin line between magic and reality starts to blur, Carol must decide for herself what is possible - and what it means to be true to her roots. Readers who dream that there’s something more out there will be enchanted by this captivating novel of family, renewal, and discovering the wonder of the world. From School Library Journal Gr 4-6-Eagars debut novel follows 12-year-old Carol (not Carolina, she insists) as she and her family relocate for the summer to her grandfathers ranch in New Mexico, where Serge, the ailing patriarch, has been slowly progressing into dementia. As the family cleans, mends, and preps the property for sale, Carol gets to know her grandfather and family history for the first time, all while suffering through the identity crises that tend to accompany adolescence. Eagar makes expressive use of the hot, dusty, isolated setting, while Carols struggles with her changing self-perception yield a few moments that anyone whos had to navigate middle school will find relatable (the clothes fit fine. I just dont fit the clothes.). Readers who enjoy Pam Muñoz Ryans novels or Jennifer Cervantess Tortilla Sun (Chronicle, 2010) will find Carols angst compelling and her wide-eyed brushes with the likes of magical bees and life-giving trees amusing, but Eagars depictions of magic in the everyday often feel as dry as the New Mexico desert. A recurring storytelling motif adds technical interest, but the characters relationships never quite reach the level of intimacy needed to justify it. VERDICT A sentimental but undistinguished coming-of-age story with touches of magical realism.-Abigail Garnett, Brooklyn Public Library?(c) Copyright 2011. Library Journals LLC, a wholly owned subsidiary of Media Source, Inc. No redistribution permitted. Review Eagar seamlessly blends a 12-year-old girl’s summer of change with a hefty dose of magical realism in this accomplished debut...Fairytale motifs (“No rain for a hundred years”) emphasize the stark physicality of the New Mexican mesa, with its oppressive heat, spindly sheep, and numerous dangers. Through this atmospheric setting, Eagar sustains a sense of wonder and longing for small things (bees, seeds, stories) to respond to big human needs.-Publishers Weekly (starred review)Tightly plotted and elegantly characterized, this is a striking debut. Both Carol’s journey and Serge’s stories seem inherently true, and the juxtaposition of the two results in a moving, atmospheric novel of family, heritage, and fairy tales that are more real than not.-Booklist (starred review)The delicate magic of Serge’s story ties present and past together in a beautifully written, affecting story of forgiveness and understanding that enables Carol to move forward in her own life, resetting her values and claiming her own place in her grandfather’s story. Her sulks, fears, and desires render her credibly twelve, and the storytelling ably prepares readers for her less predictable decisions. Offering a compelling introduction to Latin American magic realism, this will have appeal for middle-school lovers of literary fiction.-Bulletin of the Center for Childrens ...

Book : The Great Godden - Rosoff, Meg

-Titulo Original : The Great Godden-Fabricante : Candlewick-Descripcion Original: From National Book Award Finalist Meg Rosoff comes a lyrical, compulsively readable coming-of-age tale that is heady, irresistible, and timeless.Everyone talks about falling in love like its the most miraculous, life-changing thing in the world. Something happens, they say, and you know . . .I looked into his eyes and I knew.Only, everyone else knew too. Everyone else felt exactly the same way. This is the story of one family during one dreamy summer-the summer when everything changes. In an eccentric, turreted vacation house by the sea, our watchful narrator sees everything, including many things that shouldn’t be seen, while brothers and sisters, parents and theatrical older cousins fill the hot days with wine and tennis and sailing and planning a wedding. Enter two brothers, the sons of a fading film actress-irresistibly charming, languidly sexy Kit and surly, silent Hugo. Suddenly there’s a serpent in this paradise, and the consequences will be devastating. In a propulsive narrative carrying intrigue and a growing sense of unease, Meg Rosoff, best-selling author of the iconic How I Live Now, offers a summer tale of innocence lost that will find its place among the classics of young adult literature. Review A British family of six takes its annual vacation to the beach for what is sure to be a glorious summer. ...Printz Award-winner Rosoff (How I Live Now, 2004) has written an absolutely remarkable coming-of-age story. Everything about it-style, substance, mood, atmosphere, tone, and especially characterization-is spot-on. One wants to read the book several times to tease out how Rosoff achieves her effects. The effort is a joy, just like this unforgettable novel, the first of a planned, summer-themed trio.-Booklist (starred review)While the title may hint at The Great Gatsby and its charismatic protagonist, the keenly self-aware book has much stronger connections to classic British coming-of-age novels such as Dodie Smith’s I Capture the Castle, wherein the affectionate, sharply observed family characterization and the atmosphere play roles as large as any romantic element. . . . There’s enough tension here that readers may hope for a ramp-up into full thriller, but the story moves toward a different kind of satisfying conclusion, with victory lying in an unpredictable tennis match and the ability to preserve the possibilities of future summers.-Bulletin of the Center for Childrens Books (starred review)A London teen recounts the summer that tore the family apart... Through the narrator’s keen observations, made more poignant in hindsight and through sarcasm, readers view the twisting and turning development of Kit’s manipulation. Although slim, Rosoff’s taut, psychological story elicits a slow burn, leaving readers wondering how far and wide Kit’s power will extend through the family. It’s all just the beginning of the narrator’s loss of innocence. A searing coming-of-age novel.-Kirkus ReviewsThrough an unnamed, ungendered teen’s sharp eye and knowing narration, Printz Medalist Rosoff tells a dryly humorous story of summer and love gone awry. . . Between Mal and Hope’s wedding planning, the Godden brothers’ tensions, and Kit’s erratic attentions, the summer darkens, leading this effective character study and depiction of childhood’s end to a surprising climax.-Publishers WeeklyMeg Rosoffs The Great Godden is a first-rate coming-of-age novel told by an astute and appealing unnamed narrator over the course of one uncharacteristically fraught seaside summer. . . . The Great Godden is filled with equal parts drama and reflection, delivering a riveting novel of love and betrayal that is deftly and elegantly written.-Shelf AwarenessThe predictable pleasures of a family’s holiday implode when two brothers-one brooding, one charming-come to stay. A taut page-turner.-People Magazine About the Author Meg Rosoff is the author of How I Live Now, winner of the Michael L. Printz Award. Sh...

The story begins with the three heroes sailing on Princess Sneezeworts ship. The Princess in Blankets would like to battle sea monsters while the Princess in Black is hoping to see a mermaid. -Titulo Original : The Lost Coast-Fabricante : Candlewick-Descripcion Original: The spellbinding tale of six queer witches forging their own paths, shrouded in the mist, magic, and secrets of the ancient California redwoods. Danny didn’t know what she was looking for when she and her mother spread out a map of the United States and Danny put her finger down on Tempest, California. What she finds are the Grays: a group of friends who throw around terms like queer and witch like they’re ordinary and everyday, though they feel like an earthquake to Danny. But Danny didn’t just find the Grays. They cast a spell that calls her halfway across the country, because she has something they need: she can bring back Imogen, the most powerful of the Grays, missing since the summer night she wandered into the woods alone. But before Danny can find Imogen, she finds a dead boy with a redwood branch through his heart. Something is very wrong amid the trees and fog of the Lost Coast, and whatever it is, it can kill. Lush, eerie, and imaginative, Amy Rose Capetta’s tale overflows with the perils and power of discovery - and what it means to find your home, yourself, and your way forward. Review In Capetta’s dreamy, enigmatic tale, a restless teen finds friendship, love, and self-acceptance among a coven of queer witches...the unapologetic characters, diverse in sexual and gender identities as well as diverse physically and ethnically, are the real draw. This is a slow-burning, mystical, and romantic character study about the life-affirming magic of finding a place to belong after being lost for so long. -Booklist (starred review) The positive, gentle depiction of Danny and Rushs physical relationship offers much-needed representation. Ideal for readers searching for queer- and female-driven contemporary fantasy. -Kirkus Reviews With lush prose, atmospheric descriptions, and nonlinear storytelling (segments intertwine present and past), Capetta ( Echo After Echo) crafts an accomplished tale with a wide range of representation. Frank discussions of sexuality and identity intertwine with an almost raw emotionality as the characters wholeheartedly embrace their true selves, and an underlying current of suspense supports the overarching mixture of intrigue and interpersonal development. -Publishers Weekly A refreshingly diverse cast, and . . . a nuanced picture that traverses the fluid lines of human connection. . . . Capetta’s prose has an attractive lyricism that underlines the mystique of the dreamlike wooded setting, and fans of McLemore’s florid, sensual writing and queer romance in When the Moon Was Ours (BCCB 10/16) and Wild Beauty (BCCB 10/17) may appreciate this similarly styled offering. -Bulletin of the Center for Childrens Books Told through shifting points of view, this book wraps sinuous, sensual language around a tight, fast-paced plot to create a story that entrances readers from the beginning. Despite their magical powers, Capetta’s characters are relatable teens from their highest hopes to their deepest insecurities. A powerful book for teens who long to feel seen. Recommended for all high school and public libraries. -School Library Journal This atmospheric story thought- provokingly explores the powers of magic within young women and in women loving women. -The Horn Book This surreal and magical story is hauntingly delightful and completely absorbing.
