Presented without argument or commentary, these apocryphal texts are fascinating, often provocative, reading. An essential resource for the study of biblical history and theology, this authentic presentation of the lost Scriptures can be enjoyed for its beauty and directness, while also adding to ones understanding of life in Judea during the first century A.D...

-Titulo Original : Twelve Years A Slave (dover Thrift Editions Black History)-Fabricante : Dover Publications-Descripcion Original: The basis for the Academy Award®-winning movie! A moving, vital testament to one of slaverys many thousand gone who retained his humanity in the bowels of degradation. - Saturday Review Born a free man in New York State in 1808, Solomon Northup was kidnapped in Washington, DC, in 1841. He spent the next 12 harrowing years of his life as a slave on a Louisiana cotton plantation. During this time he was frequently abused and often afraid for his life. After regaining his freedom in 1853, Northup decided to publish this gripping autobiographical account of his captivity. As an educated man, Northup was able to present an exceptionally detailed and accurate description of slave life and plantation society. Indeed, this book is probably the fullest, most realistic picture of the peculiar institution during the three decades before the Civil War. Moreover, Northup tells his story both from the viewpoint of an outsider, who had experienced 30 years of freedom and dignity in the United States before his capture, and as a slave, reduced to total bondage and submission. Very few personal accounts of American slavery were written by slaves with a similar history. Published in 1853, Northups book found a ready audience and almost immediately became a bestseller. Aside from its vivid depiction of the detention, transportation, and sale of slaves, Twelve Years a Slave is admired for its classic accounts of cotton and sugar production, its uncannily precise recall of people, times, and places, and the compelling details that re-create the daily routine of slaves in the Gulf South. 7 illustrations. Book : The Recollections Of Rifleman Harris A British...

-Titulo Original : The Recollections Of Rifleman Harris A British Soldier In The Napoleonic Wars (dover Military History, Weapons, Armor)-Fabricante : Dover Publications-Descripcion Original: Diaries, memoirs, and letters by officers of the Napoleonic era abound, but there are few reminiscences by common foot soldiers. This extraordinarily vivid and entirely authentic report by British rifleman Benjamin Harris offers rare glimpses of life among the enlisted men. Harriss personal anecdotes, brimming with ready wit and memorable descriptions, tell of military life from the bottom up: the soldiers camaraderie amid physical hardships and inadequate supplies and equipment, their endemic drunkenness and frequent hunger, the terrible punishments meted out for even small infractions, and the narrow margin between death and survival. In the mid-1830s, Harris was working as a London cobbler when he met a former British Army officer who asked him to recount his wartime experiences. A natural storyteller with a remarkable tale to tell, Harris recalled his years of active service, which began in 1803 when he joined the 95th Regiment of Foot in Ireland and were followed by campaigns from 1808 to 1809 in Portugal and Spain. First published in 1848, this memoir was neither popular nor well received during Harriss lifetime, but since its rediscovery in the early twentieth century, it has become one of the most valuable documents of the Peninsular War. About the Author Benjamin Harris (1781-1858) was a rifleman in the English army, fighting against Napoleon in the European wars that culminated with Napoleons loss at the Battle of Waterloo in 1815. By the time of Waterloo, Harris had endured many campaigns and had been forced by illness to leave the Army and return to England to ply his trade as a shoemaker. He had joined the 95th Regiment of Foot in 1803, serving first in Denmark and then in 1808-09 in Portugal and Spain. Back in England, Harris encountered a former British Army officer and prolific novelist named Henry Curling (1803-64), who recorded Harris memories of his life as a soldier and created this unique text from those accounts...

-Titulo Original : A Modest Proposal And Other Satirical Works (dover Thrift Editions)-Fabricante : Dover Publications-Descripcion Original: The originality, concentrated power and fierce indignation of his satirical writing have earned Jonathan Swift (1667-1745) a reputation as the greatest prose satirist in English language. Gullivers Travels is, of course, his world-renowned masterpiece in the genre; however, Swift wrote other, shorter works that also offer excellent evidence of his inspired lampoonery. Perhaps the most famous of these is A Modest Proposal, in which he straight-facedly suggests that Ireland could solve its hunger problems by using its children for food. Also included in this collection are The Battle of the Books, A Meditation upon a Broomstick, A Discourse Concerning the Mechanical Operation of the Spirit, and An Argument Against Abolishing Christianity in England. This inexpensive edition will certainly be welcomed by teachers and students of English literature, but its appeal extends to any reader who delights in watching a master satirist wield words as weapons. Review If you read this in high school (as many of us did), it may have shocked you--not bad for a tract written in 1729. It wouldnt be fair to those of you who havent come across A Modest Proposal to reveal the particulars of the piece; suffice it to say that Saturday Night Live has nothing on Jonathan Swift! Swifts discussion of what Great Britain should do for his native impoverished Ireland is a model of political satire, absolutely consistent in tone and even now still sparkling in its clarity. The balance between, on the one hand, the utter seriousness of the matter in question and, on the other, the outrageousness of the remedy suggested is exquisite. A Modest Proposal is short and comes bound in this edition with several of Swifts other writings. This volume is an excellent introduction to the author of Gullivers Travels (itself a masterwork) and to one of the worlds premier satirical minds. What are you waiting for? --Michael Gerbe...

Book : Meditations (dover Thrift Editions Philosophy) -...

-Titulo Original : Meditations (dover Thrift Editions Philosophy)-Fabricante : Dover Publications-Descripcion Original: Look within. Within is the fountain of good, and it will ever bubble up, if you will ever dig. Meditations instructs and inspires through its calm and unblinking reckoning with the elemental difficulties of human life, and its emphasis on virtue rather than pleasure as the key to inner peace. Presented here in a specially modernized version of the classic George Long translation, one of the worlds most famous and influential books, Meditations, by the Roman emperor Marcus Aurelius (A.D. 121-180), outlines a philosophy of commitment to virtue above pleasure and tranquility above happiness. Ascending to the imperial throne in A.D. 161, Roman emperor Marcus Aurelius (A.D. 121-180) found his reign beset by natural disasters and war. In the wake of these challenges, he set down a series of private reflections, incorporating the Stoic precepts he used to cope with his life as a warrior and administrator of an empire. This eloquent and moving work draws and enriches the tradition of Stoicism, which stressed the search for inner peace and ethical certainty in an apparently chaotic world. Serenity was to be achieved by emulating in ones personal conduct the underlying orderliness and lawfulness of nature. And in the face of inevitable pain, loss, and death-the suffering at the core of life-Aurelius counsels stoic detachment from the things that are beyond ones control and a focus on ones own will and perception. This updated and revised edition of the classic George Long translation is easily accessible to contemporary readers. It not only provides a fascinating glimpse into the mind and personality of a highly principled Roman of the second century, but also offers todays readers a practical and inspirational guide to the challenges of everyday life. Consider that everything is opinion, and opinion is in your power. Book : Mohandas K. Gandhi, Autobiography The Story Of My...

-Titulo Original : Mohandas K. Gandhi, Autobiography The Story Of My Experiments With Truth-Fabricante : Dover Publications-Descripcion Original: My purpose, Mahatma Gandhi writes of this book, is to describe experiments in the science of Satyagraha, not to say how good I am. Satyagraha, Gandhis nonviolent protest movement (satya = true, agraha = firmness), came to stand, like its creator, as a moral principle and a rallying cry; the principle was truth and the cry freedom. The life of Gandhi has given fire and fiber to freedom fighters and to the untouchables of the world: hagiographers and patriots have capitalized on Mahatma myths. Yet Gandhi writes: Often the title [Mahatma, Great Soul] has deeply pained me. . . . But I should certainly like to narrate my experiments in the spiritual field which are known only to myself, and from which I have derived such power as I possess for working in the political field. Clearly, Gandhi never renounced the world; he was neither pacifist nor cult guru. Who was Gandhi? In the midst of resurging interest in the man who freed India, inspired the American Civil Rights Movement, and is revered, respected, and misunderstood all over the world, the time is proper to listen to Gandhi himself - in his own words, his own confessions, his autobiography. Gandhi made scrupulous truth-telling a religion and his Autobiography inevitably reminds one of other saints who have suffered and burned for their lapses. His simply narrated account of boyhood in Gujarat, marriage at age 13, legal studies in England, and growing desire for purity and reform has the force of a man extreme in all things. He details his gradual conversion to vegetarianism and ahimsa (non-violence) and the state of celibacy (brahmacharya, self-restraint) that became one of his more arduous spiritual trials. In the political realm he outlines the beginning of Satyagraha in South Africa and India, with accounts of the first Indian fasts and protests, his initial errors and misgivings, his jailings, and continued cordial dealings with the British overlords. Gandhi was a fascinating, complex man, a brilliant leader and guide, a seeker of truth who died for his beliefs but had no use for martyrdom or sainthood. His story, the path to his vision of Satyagraha and human dignity, is a critical work of the twentieth century, and timeless in its courage and inspiration...

-Titulo Original : Twelve Years A Slave (african American)-Fabricante : Dover Publications-Descripcion Original: The basis for the Academy Award®-winning movie! A moving, vital testament to one of slaverys many thousand gone who retained his humanity in the bowels of degradation. - Saturday ReviewBorn a free man in New York State in 1808, Solomon Northup was kidnapped in Washington, DC, in 1841. -Titulo Original : The Twelve Caesars (dover Thrift Editions History)-Fabricante : Dover Publications-Descripcion Original: One of antiquitys great historical resources, this chronicle by an ancient Roman scholar portrays the lives and reigns of Julius Caesar and his immediate successors. Suetonius, who served as private secretary to the Emperor Hadrian, combines research from the imperial archives with firsthand accounts of the rulers public and private lives. His dramatic narrative, delivered in a straightforward manner, abounds in tales of sex, violence, and betrayal.Written in A.D. 121, The Twelve Caesars spans the period from 49 B.C.E. to A.D. 96, one of the most important periods in antiquity. Suetoniuss vivid characterizations portray the disastrous effects of absolute power: madness, obsessive fear of assassination, and a predilection for acts of sadism and sexual perversity. One of the few surviving sources of its era, this historical treasure is unsurpassed as a fount of anecdotes, observations, and detailed physical descriptions of Roman history. About the Author Gaius Suetonius Tranquillus (c. A.D. 69-140) served as chief secretary to the Emperor Hadrian. Suetoniuss access to the imperial archives and his acquaintances at court, many of whom were eyewitnesses to the historical events he described, contributed to the depth and vividness of his historical writings. The Twelve Caesars remains among the best sources of information about Roman society and its leaders. Excerpt. © Reprinted by permission. All rights reserved. The Twelve CaesarsBy J. C. In the course of his sixteenth year a he lost his father. In the next consulate, having previously been nominated priest of Jupiter, he broke his engagement with Cossutia, a lady of only equestrian rank, but very wealthy, who had been betrothed to him before he assumed the gown of manhood, and married Cornelia, daughter of that Cinna who was four times consul, by whom he afterwards had a daughter Julia; and the dictator Sulla could by no means force him to put away his wife. Therefore besides being punished by the loss of his priesthood, his wifes dowry, and his family inheritances, Caesar was held to be one of the opposite party. He was accordingly forced to go into hiding, and though suffering from a severe attack of quartan ague, to change from one covert to another almost every night, and save himself from Sullas detectives by bribes. But at last, through the good offices of the Vestal virgins and of his near kinsmen, Mamercus Aemilius and Aurelius Cotta, he obtained forgiveness. Everyone knows that when Sulla had long held out against the most devoted and eminent men of his party who interceded for Caesar, and they obstinately persisted, he at last gave way and cried, either by divine inspiration or a shrewd forecast: Have your way and take him; only bear in mind that the man you are so eager to save will one day deal the death blow to the cause of the aristocracy, which you have joined with me in upholding;...
