-Titulo Original : Journeys Out Of The Body The Classic Work On Out-of-body Experience (journeys Trilogy)-Fabricante : Broadway Books-Descripcion Original: The definitive work on the extraordinary phenomenon of out-of-body experiences, by the founder of the internationally known Monroe Institute. Robert Monroe, a Virginia businessman, began to have experiences that drastically altered his life. Book : In God We Trust All Others Pay Cash - Jean Shepherd
-Titulo Original : In God We Trust All Others Pay Cash-Fabricante : Broadway Books-Descripcion Original: A collection of humorous and nostalgic Americana stories-the beloved, bestselling classics that inspired the movie A Christmas Story Before Garrison Keillor and Spalding Gray there was Jean Shepherd: a master monologist and writer who spun the materials of his all-American childhood into immensely resonant-and utterly hilarious-works of comic art. In God We Trust: All Others Pay Cash represents one of the peaks of his achievement, a compound of irony, affection, and perfect detail that speaks across generations. In God We Trust, Shepherds wildly witty reunion with his Indiana hometown, disproves the adage “You can never go back.” Bending the ear of Flick, his childhood-buddy-turned-bartender, Shepherd recalls passionately his genuine Red Ryder BB gun, confesses adolescent failure in the arms of Junie Jo Prewitt, and relives a story of man against fish that not even Hemingway could rival. From pop art to the Worlds Fair, Shepherds subjects speak with a universal irony and are deeply and unabashedly grounded in American Midwestern life, together rendering a wonderfully nostalgic impression of a more innocent era when life was good, fun was clean, and station wagons roamed the earth. A comic genius who bridged the gap between James Thurber and David Sedaris, Shepherd may have accomplished for Holden, Indiana, what Mark Twain did for Hannibal, Missouri. Review “Shepherd has a fine eye for absurdity, for the madness and idiocy in all of us.”-Best Sellers From the Publisher Jean Shepherd once again takes up his satirists pen to bring us another nostalgic portfolio of sketches that portray a more innocent era when life was good, fun was clean, and station wagons roamed the earth. Book : The River Of Doubt Theodore Roosevelts Darkest...
-Titulo Original : The River Of Doubt Theodore Roosevelts Darkest Journey-Fabricante : Broadway Books-Descripcion Original: NATIONAL BESTSELLER * At once an incredible adventure narrative and a penetrating biographical portrait-the bestselling author of Destiny of the Republic brings us the true story of Theodore Roosevelt’s harrowing exploration of one of the most dangerous rivers on earth. The River of Doubt-it is a black, uncharted tributary of the Amazon that snakes through one of the most treacherous jungles in the world. Indians armed with poison-tipped arrows haunt its shadows; piranhas glide through its waters; boulder-strewn rapids turn the river into a roiling cauldron. After his humiliating election defeat in 1912, Roosevelt set his sights on the most punishing physical challenge he could find, the first descent of an unmapped, rapids-choked tributary of the Amazon. Together with his son Kermit and Brazil’s most famous explorer, Candido Mariano da Silva Rondon, Roosevelt accomplished a feat so great that many at the time refused to believe it. In the process, he changed the map of the western hemisphere forever. Along the way, Roosevelt and his men faced an unbelievable series of hardships, losing their canoes and supplies to punishing whitewater rapids, and enduring starvation, Indian attack, disease, drowning, and a murder within their own ranks. Three men died, and Roosevelt was brought to the brink of suicide. The River of Doubt brings alive these extraordinary events in a powerful nonfiction narrative thriller that happens to feature one of the most famous Americans who ever lived. From the soaring beauty of the Amazon rain forest to the darkest night of Theodore Roosevelt’s life, here is Candice Millard’s dazzling debut. Review “A rich, dramatic tale that ranges from the personal to the literally earth-shaking.” -Janet Maslin, The New York Times “[A] fine account . . . There are far too many books in which a travel writer follows in the footsteps of his or her hero-and there are far too few books like this, in which an author who has spent time and energy ferreting out material from archival sources weaves it into a gripping tale.” -The Washington Post “[N]o frills, high-adventure writing . . . Millard’s sober account is as claustrophobic as a walk through the densest jungle, and as full of vigor as Roosevelt himself.” -Entertainment Weekly About the Author CANDICE MILLARD is a former writer and editor at National Geographic magazine and New York Times bestselling author. She lives in Kansas City. Excerpt. © Reprinted by permission. All rights reserved. CHAPTER 1 Defeat The line outside Madison Square Garden started to form at 5:30 p.m., just as an orange autumn sun was setting in New York City on Halloween Eve, 1912. The doors were not scheduled to open for another hour and a half, but the excitement surrounding the Progressive Party’s last major rally of the presidential campaign promised a packed house. The party was still in its infancy, fighting for a foothold in its first national election, but it had something that the Democrats had never had and the Republicans had lately lost, the star attraction that drew tens of thousands of people to the Garden that night: Theodore Roosevelt. Roosevelt, one of the most popular presidents in his nation’s history, had vowed never to run again after winning his second term in the White House in 1904. But now, just eight years later, he was not only running for a third term, he was, to the horror and outrage of his old Republican backers, running as a third-party candidate against Democrats and Republicans alike. Roosevelt’s decision to abandon the Republican Party and run as a Progressive had been bitterly criticized, not just because he was muddying the political waters but because he still had a large and almost fanatically loyal following. Roosevelt was five feet eight inches tall, about average height for an American man in the early twentieth century, weighed more than two hundred pounds, and had a voice that sounded as if he had just taken a sip... -

-Titulo Original : The Highly Sensitive Person How To Thrive When The World Overwhelms You-Fabricante : Broadway Books-Descripcion Original: NATIONAL BESTSELLER * Are you a highly sensitive person? Discover how to better understand yourself and create a fuller, richer life with the help of a clinical psychologist. “To say this book changed my life would be an understatement. I am forever grateful to Elaine Aron.”-Alanis Morissette, singer, songwriter, activist Do you have a keen imagination and vivid dreams? Is time alone each day as essential to you as food and water? Are you “too shy” or “too sensitive” according to others? Do noise and confusion quickly overwhelm you? If your answers are yes, you may be a Highly Sensitive Person (HSP). Most of us feel overstimulated every once in a while, but for the highly sensitive person, it’s a way of life. In this groundbreaking book, Dr. Elaine Aron, a highly sensitive person herself, shows you how to identify this trait in yourself and make the most of it in everyday situations. In The Highly Sensitive Person, you will discover:* Self-assessment tests to help you identify your particular sensitivities* Ways to reframe your past experiences in a positive light and gain greater self-esteem in the process* Insight into how high sensitivity affects both work and personal relationships* Tips on how to deal with over-arousal* Information on medications and when to seek help* Techniques to enrich the soul and spirit Drawing on many years of research and hundreds on interviews, The Highly Sensitive Person will change the way you see yourself-and the world around you Review Are you an HSP? Are you easily overwhelmed by stimuli? Affected by other peoples moods? Easily startled? Do you need to withdraw during busy times to a private, quiet place? Do you get nervous or shaky if someone is observing you or competing with you? HSP, shorthand for highly sensitive person, describes 15 to 20 percent of the population. Being sensitive is a normal trait--nothing defective about it. But you may not realize that, because society rewards the outgoing personality and treats shyness and sensitivity as something to be overcome. According to author Elaine Aron (herself an HSP), sensitive people have the unusual ability to sense subtleties, spot or avoid errors, concentrate deeply, and delve deeply. This book helps HSPs to understand themselves and their sensitive trait and its impact on personal history, career, relationships, and inner life. The book offers advice for typical problems. For example, you learn strategies for coping with overarousal, overcoming social discomfort, being in love relationships, managing job challenges, and much more. The author covers a lot of material clearly, in an approachable style, using case studies, self-tests, and exercises to bring the information home. The book is essential for you if you are an HSP--youll learn a lot about yourself. Its also useful for people in a relationship with an HSP. --Joan Price Review “I wept through almost every page of this book out of sheer self-recognition. -Titulo Original : Sway The Irresistible Pull Of Irrational Behavior-Fabricante : Broadway Books-Descripcion Original: A fascinating journey into the hidden psychological influences that derail our decision-making, Sway will change the way you think about the way you think. Why is it so difficult to sell a plummeting stock or end a doomed relationship? Why do we listen to advice just because it came from someone “important”? Why are we more likely to fall in love when there’s danger involved? In Sway, renowned organizational thinker Ori Brafman and his brother, psychologist Rom Brafman, answer all these questions and more.Drawing on cutting-edge research from the fields of social psychology, behavioral economics, and organizational behavior, Sway reveals dynamic forces that influence every aspect of our personal and business lives, including loss aversion (our tendency to go to great lengths to avoid perceived losses), the diagnosis bias (our inability to reevaluate our initial diagnosis of a person or situation), and the “chameleon effect” (our tendency to take on characteristics that have been arbitrarily assigned to us). Sway introduces us to the Harvard Business School professor who got his students to pay $204 for a $20 bill, the head of airline safety whose disregard for his years of training led to the transformation of an entire industry, and the football coach who turned conventional strategy on its head to lead his team to victory. We also learn the curse of the NBA draft, discover why interviews are a terrible way to gauge future job performance, and go inside a session with the Supreme Court to see how the world’s most powerful justices avoid the dangers of group dynamics.Every once in a while, a book comes along that not only challenges our views of the world but changes the way we think. Book : Getting Stoned With Savages A Trip Through The...
-Titulo Original : Getting Stoned With Savages A Trip Through The Islands Of Fiji And Vanuatu-Fabricante : Broadway Books-Descripcion Original: With The Sex Lives of Cannibals, Maarten Troost established himself as one of the most engaging and original travel writers around. Getting Stoned with Savages again reveals his wry wit and infectious joy of discovery in a side-splittingly funny account of life in the farthest reaches of the world. After two grueling years on the island of Tarawa, battling feral dogs, machete-wielding neighbors, and a lack of beer on a daily basis, Maarten Troost was in no hurry to return to the South Pacific. But as time went on, he realized he felt remarkably out of place among the trappings of twenty-first-century America. When he found himself holding down a job-one that might possibly lead to a career-he knew it was time for him and his wife, Sylvia, to repack their bags and set off for parts unknown.Getting Stoned with Savages tells the hilarious story of Troost’s time on Vanuatu-a rugged cluster of islands where the natives gorge themselves on kava and are still known to “eat the man.” Falling into one amusing misadventure after another, Troost struggles against typhoons, earthquakes, and giant centipedes and soon finds himself swept up in the laid-back, clothing-optional lifestyle of the islanders. When Sylvia gets pregnant, they decamp for slightly-more-civilized Fiji, a fallen paradise where the local chiefs can be found watching rugby in the house next door. And as they contend with new parenthood in a country rife with prostitutes and government coups, their son begins to take quite naturally to island living-in complete contrast to his dad. From Publishers Weekly Using a format similar to that of his previous work, The Sex Lives of Cannibals, Troost creates another comical and touching travel memoir. Troost and his wife, Sylvia, move from busy Washington, D.C., to Vanuatu, a nation made up of 83 islands in the South Pacific. As Sylvia works for a regional nonprofit, Troost immerses himself in the islands culture, an odd mix of the islanders thousand-year-old kastoms along with imperialist British and French influences. This really means that Troost gets to live in a nice house while he gets drunk on kava; dodges a long inferno of magma and a cascade of lava bombs at the worlds most accessible volcano; and checks out the calcified leftovers from one of Vanuatus not-so-ancient traditions, cannibalism. At the end of the book, the couple move to Fiji so that Sylvia will have state-of-the-art medical care when she gives birth to their first baby. While modern-day Fiji provides little fodder for Troosts comic sensibilities, the birth of his son enables him to share some deeper thoughts and decide it is time to stop looking for paradise. A funny travelogue with a sentimental heart, Troosts latest work genuinely captures the search for paradise as well as the need for home. Justice:A Fathers Account of the Trial of His Daughters KillerIt was the beginning of a long hot summer. I flew to Los Angeles on July 5, 1983, for an indefinite stay. Throughout the flight from New York I engaged in diligent conversation with the stranger next to me, postponing as long as possible facing the feelings of dread within me. My two sons, Griffin and Alex, had preceded me out from New York. Alex, the younger one, met me at the airport, and we drove into Beverly Hills to the house where my former wife, Ellen Griffin Dunne, called Lenny, lives. Griffin was already there. It is not the house we lived in as a family. It is smaller and on one level. Lenny has multiple sclerosis and is confined to a wheelchair. We were gathering, a family again, for a murder trial. The first time I saw Lenny she was getting off a train at the railroad station in Hartford, Connecticut. She was ravishing, and I knew that instant that I would marry her if she would have me. We had a large wedding at her familys ranch in Nogales, Arizona, in 1954, and after living briefly in New York, we moved to Beverly Hills, where I worked for twenty-five years in television and films. We had five children, two of whom died when they were only a few days old. Long divorced, we have, rightly or wrongly, never become unmarried. Often I have felt through the years that our lives might have been better if we had just stuck out the difficult years of our marriage, but I do not know if she would agree with that. We never venture into the realm of what might have been. I refer to her in conversation as my wife, never my ex-wife, and there is not a day in which she does not occupy my thoughts for some period of time. We communicate regularly and mail each other clippings we cut out of newspapers, and I no longer resent, as I once did, addressing her as Mrs. E. Griffin Dunne rather than as Mrs. Dominick Dunne. When the telephone in my New York apartment woke me at five oclock in the mornin... -

Presents are being wrapped and reservations are being made when Nick’s clever and beautiful wife disappears. Husband-of-the-Year Nick isn’t doing himself any favors with cringe-worthy daydreams about the slope and shape of his wife’s head, but passages from Amys diary reveal the alpha-girl perfectionist could have put anyone dangerously on edge. Under mounting pressure from the police and the media-as well as Amy’s fiercely doting parents-the town golden boy parades an endless series of lies, deceits, and inappropriate behavior. Nick is oddly evasive, and he’s definitely bitter-but is he really a killer? NAMED ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR BYSan Francisco Chronicle * St. Louis Post-Dispatch * The Chicago Tribune * HuffPost * Newsday“Absorbing . . . In masterly fashion, Flynn depicts the unraveling of a marriage-and of a recession-hit Midwest-by interweaving the wife’s diary entries with the husband’s first-person account.”-New Yorker“Ms. Flynn writes dark suspense novels that anatomize violence without splashing barrels of blood around the pages . . . Ms. Flynn has much more up her sleeve than a simple missing-person case. As Nick and Amy alternately tell their stories, marriage has never looked so menacing, narrators so unreliable.”-The Wall Street Journal“The story unfolds in precise and riveting prose . . . even while you know you’re being manipulated, searching for the missing pieces is half the thrill of this wickedly absorbing tale.”-O: The Oprah Magazine Review “Ice-pick-sharp . . . spectacularly sneaky . . . impressively cagey . . . Gone Girl is Ms. Flynn’s dazzling breakthrough. It is wily, mercurial, subtly layered and populated by characters so well imagined that they’re hard to part with.”-Janet Maslin, The New York Times“An ingenious and viperish thriller . . . Even as Gone Girl grows truly twisted and wild, it says smart things about how tenuous power relations are between men and women, and how often couples are at the mercy of forces beyond their control. As if that weren’t enough, Flynn has created a genuinely creepy villain you dont see coming. People love to talk about the banality of evil. You’re about to meet a maniac you could fall in love with.” -Jeff Giles, Entertainment Weekly “An irresistible summer thriller with a twisting plot worthy of Alfred Hitchcock. Burrowing deep into the murkiest corners of the human psyche, this delectable summer read will give you the creeps and keep you on edge until the last page.”-People (four stars)“It’s simply fantastic: terrifying, darkly funny and at times moving. . . . [Gone Girl is] her most intricately twisted and deliciously sinister story, dangerous for any reader who prefers to savor a novel as opposed to consuming it whole in one sitting.”-Michelle Weiner, Associated Press “Gillian Flynn’s third novel is both breakneck-paced thriller and masterful dissection of marital breakdown. . . . Wickedly plotted and surprisingly thoughtful, this is a terrifically good read.”-The Boston Globe “Gone Girl is that rare thing: a book that thrills and delights while holding up a mirror to how we live. . . . Through her two ultimately unreliable narrators, Flynn masterfully weaves the slow trickle of critical details with 90... -

-Titulo Original : Fragile (Jones Cooper)-Fabricante : Broadway Books-Descripcion Original: New York Times and USA Today bestsellerA Good Morning America Top Book PickA Walmart Bookclub PickA Harpers Bazaar Hot Book PickA Target Emerging Author PickA nail-biting, nuanced whodunit (People)This one is a stunner... a read that will stay with you. (New York Journal of Books) Bestselling author Lisa Unger has made her mark ( Boston Globe) and delivers another exciting blockbuster that explores one communitys intricate yet fragile bonds and will leave readers asking, How well do I know the people I love? and How far would I go to protect them? Everybody knows everybody in The Hollows, a quaint, charming town outside of New York City. Its a place where neighbors keep an eye on one anothers kids, where people say hello in the grocery store, and where high school cliques and antics are never quite forgotten. As a child, Maggie found living under the microscope of small-town life stifling. But as a wife and mother, she has happily returned to The Hollowss insular embrace. As a psychologist, her knowledge of family histories provides powerful insights into her patients lives. So when the girlfriend of her teenage son, Rick, disappears, Maggies intuitive gift proves useful to the case--and also dangerous. The investigation has her husband, Jones, the lead detective on the case, acting strangely. Rick, already a brooding teenager, becomes even more withdrawn. In a town where the past is always present, nobody is above suspicion, not even a son in the eyes of his father. Determined to uncover the truth, Maggie pursues her own leads into Charlenes disappearance and exposes a long-buried town secret--one that could destroy everything she holds dear. Review “Folks in a small town descend into darkness and revisit long forgotten memories when a young girl disappears. . . . [A] simmering, tragic tale. Fans of authors like Jodi Picoult will want to read this one in a nice comfortable chair. . . . Ungers fans wont be disappointed.” -Associated Press “This one is a stunner. . . . Unger’s genius is in plotting the story so that the reader never knows what’s coming next. . . .This is a read that will stay with you.” -New York Journal of Books Review “Unger skillfully builds suspense by alternating point of view from chapter to chapter. . . . Too many thrillers rely on coincidence or outlandish twists to connect the dots in a crime investigation, but Unger makes that process organic by using the interconnectedness of her characters lives over the decades-these people really do know each others secrets. Even apparently unrelated thread-like the chapters about the exterminator called in to trap the raccoons in Elizabeths attic-are cleverly woven into the plot. Unger is also adept at drawing believable characters and relationships. Much of the emotional weight and considerable tension of Fragile have to do with families, with how parents and their children relate (or dont) and how husbands and wives can think they know everything about each other-and then find themselves surprised.” -St. Petersburg Times “If youre a fan of Jodi Picoults family chronicle storytelling, youll enjoy Fragile, too. Its set in a small affluent town outside New York, where everyone knows someone who kissed the pizza guy once and many have ugly memories and buried secrets. When a teenage girl goes missing, the lives of all who knew her unravel. Unger balances nicely the suspense of her missing person story (a layered one when the vanishing of another teenage girl 30 years earlier is connected) with deeper sentiments. How do you live in the present when the past has broken you?” -Milwaukee Journal Sentinel “Page-turning suspense . . . [ Fragile] also mines the more intimate territory of family and community dynamics, inspired by the disappearance and murder of one of Unger’s own schoolmates more than two decades ago. . . . In the style of Jodi Picoult, Fragile tells its tale through the real-time acti...

It is beautifully written, thought-provoking, and unforgettable.” -Bill Gates“Inside my copy of his book, Mr. Desmond scribbled a note: ‘home = life.’ Too many in Washington don’t understand that. We need a government that will partner with communities, from Appalachia to the suburbs to downtown Cleveland, to make hard work pay off for all these overlooked Americans.” -Senator Sherrod Brown, Wall Street Journal“My God, what [ Evicted] lays bare about American poverty. It is devastating and infuriating and a necessary read.” -Roxane Gay, author of Bad Feminist and Difficult Women “Written with the vividness of a novel, [ Evicted] offers a dark mirror of middle-class America’s obsession with real estate, laying bare the workings of the low end of the market, where evictions have become just another part of an often lucrative business model.” -Jennifer Schuessler, New York Times“In spare and penetrating prose . . . Book : Glock The Rise Of Americas Gun - Barrett, Paul M.
-Titulo Original : Glock: The Rise Of Americas Gun-Fabricante : Broadway Books-Descripcion Original: The Glock pistol is America’s Gun. It has been rhapsodized by hip-hop artists and coveted by cops and crooks alike. Created in 1982 by Gaston Glock, the pistol arrived in America at a fortuitous time. Law enforcement agencies had concluded that their agents and officers, armed with standard six-round revolvers, were getting outgunned by drug dealers with semi-automatic pistols; they needed a new gun. With its lightweight plastic frame and large-capacity spring-action magazine, the Glock was the gun of the future. You could drop it underwater, toss it from a helicopter, or leave it out in the snow, and it would still fire. It was reliable, accurate, lightweight, and cheaper to produce than Smith and Wesson’s revolver. Filled with corporate intrigue, political maneuvering, Hollywood glitz, bloody shoot-outs-and an attempt on Gaston Glock’s life by a former lieutenant-Glock is not only the inside account of how Glock the company went about marketing its pistol to police agencies and later the public, but also a compelling chronicle of the evolution of gun culture in America. Review “This book-from a top-notch reporter-will enlighten you about both gun culture and business culture. It’s fascinating, even-handed, and packs considerable punch!” -Bill McKibben, bestselling author of The End of Nature, Deep Economy, and The Age of Missing Information “Glock is a riveting tale with masterful pacing and meticulous research. Paul Barrett knows his subject intimately, and it shows. . . . It’s a must-read for anyone with an interest in handguns or the firearm industry or even American pop culture.” -Cameron Hopkins, editor in chief, Combat Tactics magazine; American Rifleman’s Industry Insider blog “With his customary insight and crystal-clear style, Paul Barrett has told the story of how a simple toolmaker from Austria came to be the dominant force in the manufacture and sale of pistols in the United States. . . . Glock is not at all just for the gun enthusiast. This book is for anyone concerned about the level of gun violence in America, and that should be all of us.” -Richard Aborn, president, Citizens Crime Commission of New York City; former president, Handgun Control, Inc. “Glock is a great read. Very informative from both a technical and historical standpoint-warts and all.” -Frank A. DiNuzzo, chief firearms instructor, New York State Police (ret.); chief instructor, Glock, Inc. (ret.) “Paul Barrett’s Glock is a fascinating and bizarre tale of an entrepreneur, a weapon, and a nation’s love affair with guns.” -Jeffrey Toobin, staff writer, The New Yorker; author of The Nine: Inside the Secret World of the Supreme Court “Colt, Smith & Wesson, Winchester, Remington: These were the American firearms industry’s major players for 150 years. In the 1980s they were joined by a foreign upstart, Glock, which soon overtook them all. Paul M. Barrett ably investigates Glock’s seemingly inexorable rise to power, profit, and predominance in this riveting story of how a plastic Austrian pistol...transformed into America’s chosen gun.” -Alexander Rose, author of American Rifle: A Biography “It’s a story that pulls back the curtain on a secretive company that was apparently willing to do whatever it took to be successful. And it’s a heckuva good read.” -Jim Shepherd, The Outdoor Wire Barrett is right on target, delivering a well-oiled, fact-packed, and fast-paced history of the Glock. -Publishers Weekly “Offering huge discounts and shrewdly marketing to police from its facility in Smyrna, Ga., [Glock] employed Gold Club strippers and Dallas Cowboy cheerleaders to attract crowds, entertain clients and lend the pistol a sexy cachet that grew exponentially when it popped up all over TV and movies as the gun of choice for cops and killers alike. . . A colorful case study of the manufacturer who beat long-entrenched, legendary brands at their own game.” -Kirkus “An informative, frequently surpris... -

Book : The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks - Rebecca Skloot
-Titulo Original : The Immortal Life Of Henrietta Lacks-Fabricante : Broadway Books-Descripcion Original: BESTSELLER • “The story of modern medicine and bioethics—and, indeed, race relations—is refracted beautifully, and movingly.”— ), AND “BEST” () BOOKS OF THE DECADE • ONE OF ’S 50 MOST IMPACTFUL BLACK BOOKS OF THE PAST 50 YEARS • WINNER OF THE HEARTLAND PRIZE FOR NONFICTION • • • NPR • • • (U.K.) • (U.K.) • • • • • Her name was Henrietta Lacks, but scientists know her as HeLa. She was a poor Southern tobacco farmer who worked the same land as her slave ancestors, yet her cells—taken without her knowledge—became one of the most important tools in medicine: The first “immortal” human cells grown in culture, which are still alive today, though she has been dead for more than sixty years. HeLa cells were vital for developing the polio vaccine; uncovered secrets of cancer, viruses, and the atom bomb’s effects; helped lead to important advances like in vitro fertilization, cloning, and gene mapping; and have been bought and sold by the billions. Yet Henrietta Lacks remains virtually unknown, buried in an unmarked grave. Henrietta’s family did not learn of her “immortality” until more than twenty years after her death, when scientists investigating HeLa began using her husband and children in research without informed consent. And though the cells had launched a multimillion-dollar industry that sells human biological materials, her family never saw any of the profits. As Rebecca Skloot so brilliantly shows, the story of the Lacks family—past and present—is inextricably connected to the dark history of experimentation on African Americans, the birth of bioethics, and the legal battles over whether we control the stuff we are made of. Over the decade it took to uncover this story, Rebecca became enmeshed in the lives of the Lacks family—especially Henrietta’s daughter Deborah. Deborah was consumed with questions: Had scientists cloned her mother? Had they killed her to harvest her cells? And if her mother was so important to medicine, why couldn’t her children afford health insurance? Intimate in feeling, astonishing in scope, and impossible to put down, The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks captures the beauty and drama of scientific discovery, as well as its human consequences...
