Book : A Slip Of The Keyboard Collected Nonfiction -...

-Titulo Original : A Slip Of The Keyboard Collected Nonfiction-Fabricante : Anchor-Descripcion Original: A collection of essays and other non fiction from Terry Pratchett, spanning the whole of his writing career from his early years to the present day. Terry Pratchett has earned a place in the hearts of readers the world over with his bestselling Discworld series -- but in recent years he has become equally well-known and respected as an outspoken campaigner for causes including Alzheimers research and animal rights. A Slip of the Keyboard brings together for the first time the finest examples of Pratchetts non fiction writing, both serious and surreal: from musings on mushrooms to what it means to be a writer (and why banana daiquiris are so important); from memories of Granny Pratchett to speculation about Gandalfs love life, and passionate defences of the causes dear to him. With all the humour and humanity that have made his novels so enduringly popular, this collection brings Pratchett out from behind the scenes of the Discworld to speak for himself -- man and boy, bibliophile and computer geek, champion of hats, orangutans and Dignity in Dying. Snuff was the bestselling adult hardcover novel of 2011. A Blink of the Screen, Terrys short fiction collection, was also one of the bestselling hardcovers of 2012. Review Praise for Terry Pratchett“One of the world’s most delightful writers.” -Cory Doctorow, Boing Boing “Some writers simply possess the Gift. No matter what they bring out . . . it’s sure to be compulsively readable. That’s certainly the case with Terry Pratchett.” -Michael Dirda, The Washington Post Book World “The great Terry Pratchett, whose wit is metaphysical, who creates an energetic and lively secondary world, who has a multifarious genius for strong parody . . . who deals with death with startling originality. He writes amazing sentences.” -A. S. Byatt, The New York Times “Clever . . . insightful. . . . [Pratchett’s] wry wit is as good as gold.” -Lylah M. Alphonse, The Boston Globe “One of the most consistently funny writers around; a master of the stealth simile, the time-delay pun, and the deflationary three-part list.” -Ben Aaronovitch, The Guardian (London)“What Pratchett does is not just great, but unparalleled. In five hundred years, it won’t be the Nobel laureates who are being studied. It’s going to be this guy.” -Brandon Sanderson, Tor About the Author TERRY PRATCHETT is the acclaimed creator of the global bestselling Discworld series, the first of which, The Colour of Magic, was published in 1983. In all, he is the author of over fifty bestselling books. His novels have been widely adapted for stage and screen, and he is the winner of multiple prizes, including the Carnegie Medal, as well as being awarded a knighthood for services to literature. Book : The Ministry Of Truth The Biography Of George Orwells

-Titulo Original : The Ministry Of Truth The Biography Of George Orwells 1984-Fabricante : Anchor-Descripcion Original: 1984 isn’t just a novel; it’s a key to understanding the modern world. George Orwell’s final work is a treasure chest of ideas and memes-Big Brother, the Thought Police, Doublethink, Newspeak, two plus two equals five-that gain potency with every year. Its vast influence resonates throughout world culture at every level, from high to pop. The Ministry of Truth is the first book to fully examine the origin and legacy of 1984: its roots in the utopian and dystopian literature that preceded it; the personal experiences in the Spanish Civil War and wartime London that Orwell drew on as he struggled to finish his masterpiece in his final years; and the political and cultural shockwaves that the novel triggered at once upon publication and which, far from subsiding, have only grown over the decades. It explores how history informs fiction and fiction explains history. Review Longlisted for Britians Ballie Gifford PrizeBloombergs Defining Book of 2019Wide-ranging and sharply written. . . . Lynskey is surely right . . . to note that the meaning of Orwell’s novel has shifted over the decades along with the preoccupations of its readers; and that in our low, dishonest moment, it is most of all a defense of truth. -The New York Times Book Review A rich and compelling case for the novel as the summation of Orwell’s entire body of work and a master key to understanding the modern world. . . . Lynskey’s account of the reach of 1984 is revelatory.” -George Packer, The Atlantic A must-read for Orwellian Times. . . . Has the zest and momentum of a Stephen King novel, and the piercing clarity and dark sensibility of Orwell himself. -Bloomberg“Dorian Lynskey’s The Ministry of Truth manages, against all odds, to find many original points to make about the dystopian classic.” -New StatesmanArresting. . . . [The Ministry of Truth] joins the dots between the age of fake news and Orwell’s work. -The EconomistThoroughly researched and wear[s] its scholarship lightly. . . . Cheeringly downbeat. . . . This astute study locates the origins of the novel and its life within pop culture. -The Guardian Dorian Lynskeys book amounts to a comprehensive survey of the history of utopia and dystopia, centering on Orwells immensely influential novel, and it is full of connections that make the readers mind spin off in all directions and search the bookshelves and the internet. . . . This thought-provoking book explores the many possibilities of what [Orwell] may have meant by it. -Margaret Drabble, The Times Literary Supplement Perhaps the best book of its kind that Ive ever read. The portrait it provides of Orwell is sharp, nuanced, and moving, and its capsule histories of the major and minor planets in orbit around 1984 are surprising and deeply informative. Above all, its just flat out fun to read. With The Ministry of Truth, Dorian Lynskey has done anyone who loves literature a great service. -Tom Bissell, author of Apostle and co-author of The Disaster Artist “Gaslighting, doublespeak, the horror of a crowd of human ‘gramophones . . . playing the same tune’ at frenzied rallies where mob and demagogue crescendo together in an orgasm of hate: Orwell saw our future and sent us a time capsule to be opened in case of emergency. That moment is now. Briskly written and brilliantly argued, The Ministry of Truth delves deep into the cultural impact-and terrifying relevance-of a book that, 70 years on, still delivers the jolt of a torturer’s electrodes.” -Mark Dery, author of Born to be Posthumous: The Eccentric Life and Mysterious Genius of Edward Gorey A deeply researched and highly readable intellectual history, providing a wealth of information and anecdotes about Orwells life and work. Lynskey skillfully weaves together literary and political histories to create a rich tapestry, full of context, color and insight into one of the most important books of the last century-and thus far, this century...

Book : Sinatra The Chairman - Kaplan, James

-Titulo Original : Sinatra The Chairman-Fabricante : Anchor-Descripcion Original: One of the Best Books of the Year The Washington Post * Los Angeles Times * Milwaukee Journal SentinelThe story of Frank Sinatra’s second act, Sinatra finds the Chairman on top of the world, riding high after an Oscar victory-and firmly reestablished as the top recording artist of his day.Following Sinatra from the mid-1950s to his death in 1998, Kaplan uncovers the man behind the myth, revealing by turns the peerless singer, the (sometimes) powerful actor, the business mogul, the tireless lover, and-of course-the close associate of the powerful and infamous. It was in these decades that the enduring legacy of Frank Sinatra was forged, and Kaplan vividly captures “Ol’ Blue Eyes” in his later years. The sequel to the New York Times best-selling Frank, here is the concluding volume of the definitive biography of The Entertainer of the Century. Review “Riveting . . . a juicy, painstakingly researched, excitingly written examination of a brilliant musician.” -The Boston Globe“Engaging to the point of addiction. . . . [Kaplan] paints a full portrait of an extremely talented and equally difficult artist. The Sinatra that emerges from these pages is an outsized figure who’s never less or more than brutally human.” -The Dallas Morning News“Hugely readable, vastly entertaining.” -Adam Gopnik, The New Yorker “Definitive, and irresistibly engrossing. . . . Piercingly perceptive.” -USA Today “Toward the end of . . . James Kaplan’s magisterial biography of Frank Sinatra, I guarantee you’ll begin to weep over the death of a massive and unforgettable talent whose style of living helped define postwar America and for an America that no longer exists.” -The Washington Post“Endlessly engaging.” -The Wall Street Journal “The Chairman never neglects the fact that beneath the fisticuffs and tabloid scandals Frank Sinatra was first and foremost an artist, as soulful and committed an original as this country will ever produce.” -Vanity Fair “Scrupulous, entertainingly eye-opening.” -Elle “Meticulously researched. . . . Kaplan draws from previous biographies and the memoirs of Sinatra’s lovers and fellow travellers, but the pithy narrative is his own, as are his persuasive critiques of the music.” -The Guardian “[Kaplan uses] detail the way a novelist does-and weaves Sinatra in with the era he lived through.” -Salon “What sets both Kaplan volumes apart from other Sinatra biographies is the author’s . . . exhaustive detail of the Chairman’s single-minded passion for making the most of his gift.” -The Washington Times “[Kaplan does a] nimble job of tracing the singer’s continued rise to international fame, and credibly explicates the alchemy behind the singer’s collaboration with Nelson Riddle and their amazing achievement during the Capitol Records years.” -The New York Times “Monumental.” -Financial Times “The great singer-actor contains multitudes in this vast, engrossing biography.” -Publishers Weekly (starred) “Rich with fascinating detail.” -The Daily Beast “Hugely compelling. . . . Stunningly researched. . . . No one is ever likely more trustworthy about Sinatra than Kaplan.” -The Buffalo News “Riveting. . . . An appropriately big book for an oversized artistic presence.” -Kirkus Reviews (starred) “Kaplan’s two volume set is the definitive word on Frank Sinatra, as definitive as any biography of any public figure can be. It’s jammed with something juicy on almost every page. It has been written with integrity and affection.” -Liz Smith “Remarkably insightful, gracefully, often eloquently written. . . . [Kaplan is] as astute in his psychological analysis as in his music criticism.” -Booklist (starred) About the Author James Kaplan has been writing about people and ideas in business and popular culture, as well as notable fiction (The Best American Short Stories), for more than three decades. Book : The Job True Tales From The Life Of A New York City..

-Titulo Original : The Job True Tales From The Life Of A New York City Cop-Fabricante : Anchor-Descripcion Original: “A nice quiet night.” During his two decades on the force, if you asked NYPD officer Steve Osborne how things were going, that’s what he’d tell you. On a stakeout? Nice quiet night. Drive by shooting? Nice quiet night. Now, with The Job he’s ready to talk, and does he have some stories to tell. Most civilians get their information about police work from television shows, which are pure fantasy. Here, Osborne takes us into his world, the gritty and not so glamorous life of real street cops. And along the way he finds humor and soul searching humanity in the most unlikely places. For anyone interested in knowing what a cop’s life is all about, this is a must read. Review “Hilarious. . . . Hair-raising. . . . [A] gruff charmer of a memoir.” -The New York Times Book Review“Osborne is a sly and humorous storyteller.” -The New Yorker “Riveting-like the best night hanging out at a bar with an engaging storyteller.” -The Kansas City Star“Osborne is a born storyteller, and anyone expecting a cop book to be filled with action and adventure won’t be disappointed with The Job. But what makes this story so powerful is its compassion and bittersweet comedy.” -Edward Conlon, author of Blue Blood“An enjoyable read. It’s real life, and it’s told by a gifted storyteller who also happened to be a gifted cop. . . . Osborne writes with passion about his work. . . . For a job that usually deals with the dregs of society, an unlikely strain creeps into Osborne’s tales-compassion. Osborne balanced toughness with empathy as he sought to ferret out wrongdoing while on duty.” -The Buffalo News “Nobody tells a cop story better than a cop, and Osborne tells them as well as I’ve ever heard (and I’ve heard a lot of them). . . . For every bad cop there are twenty heroic ones-and Steve Osborne was one of them.” -Brian McDonald, author of My Father’s Gun: One Family, Three Badges, One Hundred Years in the NYPD “Wonderful. . . . Not only was Osborne an excellent policeman (he retired as a lieutenant and the commanding officer of the Manhattan Gang Squad), he’s a fabulous storyteller, crafting his memories into well-honed tales filled with drama, humor and heart.” -Bookpage “[An] engaging memoir. . . . [Osborne’s] frank and intimate voice . . . suffuses his prose.” -Publishers Weekly “Raucous recollections. . . . [Osborne] comes off as an avuncular, world-weary tough guy. . . . Yet he elevates his perspective by displaying empathy for the civilians, victims and even criminals he has encountered.” -Kirkus “Cops are innately good storytellers, and Osborne must be one of the best.” -Booklist “Often funny, occasionally sobering and always entertaining.” -Shelf-Awareness About the Author Steve Osborne was a New York City police officer for twenty years, retiring in 2003 as a lieutenant and commanding officer of the Manhattan Gang Squad, with numerous citations for his police work. He has told his stories before packed audiences at The Moth storytelling venues across the United States. He has written for The New York Times and USA Today. Now a consultant for television and film productions, Osborne lives in upstate New York with his wife and their two dogs, Jingles and Duke. Excerpt. © Reprinted by permission. All rights reserved. Introduction I’m not quite sure how it happened, or even why, but a few months after retiring from the New York City Police Department, I picked up a pad and pen and started writing. Like most cops, I had stories to tell, and for some reason I can’t explain, I felt the need to put them on paper. I had no training in writing, other than police reports, but that little voice in the back of my head-the one that kept me safe all those years-was now nagging at me to tell my stories. For twenty years my family and friends really didn’t understand what I did for a living. It was like I was living a double life, and they only knew half of it. I would go to work early in the evening, and mos...

-Titulo Original : Love And Louis Xiv The Women In The Life Of The Sun King-Fabricante : Anchor-Descripcion Original: Review “Excellent...a pleasure to read throughout.” -The Wall Street Journal“Highly readable....with vivid wit, Fraser demonstrates that within the edifice of the monarchy there were deep crannies of ordinary affection.” -The New Yorker“Entertaining and instructive....we must still be grateful to Antonia Fraser for devising so excellent a companion with which to lie back and think of France.” -The New York Times“Engaging...the sumptuously illustrated Love and Louis XIV focuses on the diverse array of women who ‘lit up the court of the Sun King.’” -The Washington Post Louis XIV, the highly-feted “Sun King”, was renowned for his political and cultural influence and for raising France to a new level of prominence in seventeenth-century Europe. And yet, as Antonia Fraser keenly describes, he was equally legendary in the domestic sphere. Indeed, a panoply of women-his mother, Anne; mistresses such as Louise de la Valliere, Athenais de Montespan, and the puritanical Madame de Maintenon; and an array of courtesans-moved in and out of the court. The highly visible presence of these women raises many questions about their position in both Louis XIV’s life and in France at large. With careful research and vivid, engaging prose, Fraser makes the multifaceted life of one of the most famous European monarchs accessible and vibrantly current. About the Author Antonia Fraser is the author of many internationally bestselling historical works, including Love and Louis XIV, Marie Antoinette, which was made into a film by Sofia Coppola, The Wives of Henry VIII, Mary Queen of Scots, Faith and Treason: The Story of the Gunpowder Plot, and Perilous Question: Reform or Revolution? Britain on the Brink, 1832. She is also the author of Must You Go? My Life with Harold Pinter. She has received the Wolfson Prize for History, the 2000 Norton Medlicott Medal of Britain’s Historical Association, and the Franco-British Society’s Enid McLeod Literary Prize. Chapter 1Gift from HeavenThey saw in the arms of this princess whom they had watched suffer great persecutions with so much staunchness, their child-King, like a gift given by Heaven in answer to their prayers.-Madame de Motteville, MemoiresThe first woman in the life of Louis XIV - and probably the most important - was his mother, Anne of Austria. When Louis, her first child, was born on 5 September 1638 the Spanish-born Queen of France was just short of her thirty-seventh birthday. This was an age at which a royal princess might well expect to be a grandmother (Anne herself had been married at fourteen). The Queen had on the contrary endured twenty-two years of childless union. Anne, as she told a confidante, had even feared the annulment of her marriage, since childlessness was one possible ground for repudiation according to the Catholic Church. In which case the former Spanish Princess, daughter of Philip III, would either have been returned to her native country or possibly dispatched to govern the so-called ‘Spanish’ Netherlands (approximately modern Belgium), as other princesses of her royal house had done, most recently her pious aunt, Isabella Clara Eugenia. The birth of a child, and that child a son - females could not inherit in France under the fourteenth-century Salic Law - meant that the whole position of his royal mother was transformed. It was not only the obvious delight of a woman confronted with ‘a marvel when it was least expected’, as the official newspaper Gazette de France put it. It was also the traditionally strong position of any Queen of France who had produced a Dauphin, an interesting paradox in the land of the Salic Law. This strength derived from the claim of such a Queen to act as Regent should her husband die during the minority of her son; a rule which had applied to Louis XIII’s moth...

-Titulo Original : Heads In Beds A Reckless Memoir Of Hotels, Hustles, And So-called Hospitality-Fabricante : Anchor-Descripcion Original: Review Praise for Heads in Beds:Heads in Beds is Mr. Tomsky’s highly amusing guidebook to the dirty little secrets of the hospitality trade. But it is neither a meanspirited book nor a one-sided one.... [H]e winds up sounding like an essentially honest, decent guy. And his observations about character are keen, perhaps because he’s seen it all.... If this were simply a travel book of the news-you-can-use ilk, it would be of only minor interest. But Mr. Tomsky turns out to be an effervescent writer, with enough snark to make his stories sharp-edged but without the self-promoting smugness that sinks so many memoirs.... Heads in Beds embraces the full, novelistic breadth of hotel experience.... [Tomsky] is no longer a hotel employee and now, with good reason, thinks of himself as a writer.-Janet Maslin, New York TimesFor those of us whod rather live in good hotels than in our own homes, oh Lordy, is this ever a horrifyingly good time. Its the sort of equivalent of WebMD for hypochondriacs: You know youre learning way more than is good for you, but you just cant stop reading. Tomsky, who may be an even better writer than a hotelier (and hes a damn good hotelier) has worked every job and every shift; he takes us into the bowels (sometimes literally) of the hotel business, with all the pomp and circumstance, the hidden filth, and the fears and aspirations and secrets of guests and staff alike.-Judith Newman, People (4 Stars)For the uninitiated, staying at a luxury hotel can be a little intimidating.... [But] front desk raconteur Jacob Tomsky is here to help. His sharp-witted, candid new book, Heads in Beds, demystifies the world of high-end hospitality.... Coarse, smart and wickedly funny, the author delivers hilarious caricatures of the hotel guests and colleagues he has encountered over the years.... Tightly written and laced with delicious insider tips.-John Wilwol, Washington PostA wonderfully indiscreet veteran of the hospitality industry, Jacob Tomsky knows his way around a hotel.-PARADERoom upgrades. Free movies. Late checkouts. Jacob Tomsky promises readers the keys to the hotel industry kingdom in his tell-all book, Heads in Beds. The one-time philosophy major has spent more than a decade working in the industry and, like room service, he delivers the goods.... Beyond tips, Tomsky has packed his book with outrageous anecdotes about guests...[and] the hotel staff too.... Tomsky has only worked at hotels in New Orleans and New York, so readers may wonder if his tips will work anywhere else. Maybe they will, maybe they won’t. But his stories are so good, it almost doesn’t matter.-Jessica Gresko, Associated Press“Jacob Tomsky is a star. The kid writes like a dream. Heads in Beds is hilarious, literate, canny, indignant and kind-revealing an author who manages somehow to be both a total hustler and a complete humanitarian. I love this book. Keep an eye on this writer. I’m telling you, he’s a star.”-Elizabeth Gilbert, author of Eat, Pray, Love: One Womans Search for Everything Across Italy, India and Indonesia“And I thought I had it bad when I worked in restaurants! Heads in Beds is a hilarious, informative, and naughty peek at what really happens behind the glitz and glamour of the hotel experience. Not content with dispensing advice on how to get a better room or avoiding the vengeful wrath of bellhops, maids, doormen, and front-desk clerks, Tomsky also spins a touching yarn on how he kept his dignity and humanity intact while dealing with insufferable guests, Expedia wannabes, predatory hotel managers, conniving coworkers, and the occasional pervert. After reading this book, you’ll become either a better-educated hotel guest who constantly receives great service-or realize why you always get that noisy room by the elevator shaft. As a survivor of America’s dysfunctional hospitality industry, I highly recommend this book.”-Steve Dublanica, author of the New York Times bestseller Waiter Rant“In pulling the ...

Review “Kirstin Downey’s excellent new biography of Perkins . . . is timed perfectly as the U.S. faces the worst economic meltdown since the Great Depression.” -Dierdre Donahue, USA Today “The book is more than a biography of an extraordinary woman. It is a window to another time through which we are able to observe the birthing pains of reforms we now take for granted. . . . Many passages dealing with the Great Depression, immigration and the impending world war could have been lifted from today’s news. -Charlestown Post and Courier “The New Deal was a big deal for America - and, as Kirstin Downey shows in this illuminating and sparkling book, Frances Perkins, my predecessor as Labor Secretary, was the moving force behind much of it. Her legacy included Social Security, unemployment insurance, and other initiatives that have improved the lives of generations of Americans. With wit and insight, Downey recounts the accomplishments of this singular woman and invites us to celebrate her life.” -Robert B. Reich, Professor of Public Policy at the University of California at Berkeley and former U.S. Secretary of Labor“Kirstin Downey gives Frances Perkins the biography she deserves, the story of a fierce advocate who put people first, a public servant who was actually worthy of the name, and a bracing reminder of what inspired government can do. Perkins ignored the glass ceiling and changed America. This book is a joy!” -Nick Taylor, author of American-Made: The Enduring Legacy of the WPA: When FDR Put the Nation to Work“For all of her apparent modesty and fierce sense of privacy, Frances Perkins wanted to be known by posterity for her contributions to FDR and his New Deal, particularly Social Security. An investigative reporter, Kirstin Downey has uncovered France Perkins’s extraordinary strengths in shaping and securing the central domestic accomplishments of the New Dealers. Despite continuing impediments, Perkins, a social worker, successfully broke into a man’s world and was a major player for all twelve years of FDR’s administration. Downey deftly links the Progressive movement of the early 1900s with the reforms Perkins helped FDR achieve, particularly in his first two terms. In Downey’s skilled hands, Frances Perkins at last emerges as a pivotal figure in the most transformative twelve years of twentieth century American history.” -Christopher N. Breiseth, President and CEO of The Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt Institute“For his presidency to succeed, FDR needed a strong labor secretary to restore jobs and confidence. Perkins was that loyal lieutenant, as well as his unrelenting prod and social conscience.” -Mary Leonard, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette “The story of Ms. Perkins turns out to be, in the sympathetic hands of Ms. Downey, a remarkably good read, surprisingly full of dramatic twists despite that motherly hat and low-profile manner.” -Priscilla Taylor, The Washington Times “The current economic woes have, among other things, focused attention once again on the New Deal. Books about the economics, the politics and the personalities of the time have surfaced. Still, as a new book by award-winning business journalist Kirstin Downey suggests, one of the most influential figures in shaping the New Deal turns out to be a name few know today-and turns out to be a woman. Eight years of research, new documents and interviews with family members were among the many sources Down...

Book : The Wisdom Of Crowds - Surowiecki, James

-Titulo Original : The Wisdom Of Crowds-Fabricante : Anchor-Descripcion Original: From Publishers Weekly While our culture generally trusts experts and distrusts the wisdom of the masses, New Yorker business columnist Surowiecki argues that under the right circumstances, groups are remarkably intelligent, and are often smarter than the smartest people in them. To support this almost counterintuitive proposition, Surowiecki explores problems involving cognition (were all trying to identify a correct answer), coordination (we need to synchronize our individual activities with others) and cooperation (we have to act together despite our self-interest). His rubric, then, covers a range of problems, including driving in traffic, competing on TV game shows, maximizing stock market performance, voting for political candidates, navigating busy sidewalks, tracking SARS and designing Internet search engines like Google. If four basic conditions are met, a crowds collective intelligence will produce better outcomes than a small group of experts, Surowiecki says, even if members of the crowd dont know all the facts or choose, individually, to act irrationally. Wise crowds need (1) diversity of opinion; (2) independence of members from one another; (3) decentralization; and (4) a good method for aggregating opinions. The diversity brings in different information; independence keeps people from being swayed by a single opinion leader; peoples errors balance each other out; and including all opinions guarantees that the results are smarter than if a single expert had been in charge. Surowieckis style is pleasantly informal, a tactical disguise for what might otherwise be rather dense material. He offers a great introduction to applied behavioral economics and game theory. Copyright © Reed Business Information, a division of Reed Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved. In this fascinating book, New Yorker business columnist James Surowiecki explores a deceptively simple idea: Large groups of people are smarter than an elite few, no matter how brilliant-better at solving problems, fostering innovation, coming to wise decisions, even predicting the future. With boundless erudition and in delightfully clear prose, Surowiecki ranges across fields as diverse as popular culture, psychology, ant biology, behavioral economics, artificial intelligence, military history, and politics to show how this simple idea offers important lessons for how we live our lives, select our leaders, run our companies, and think about our world. Review “As entertaining and thought-provoking as The Tipping Point by Malcolm Gladwell.... The Wisdom of Crowds ranges far and wide.” -The Boston Globe“A fun, intriguing read-and a concept with enormous potential for CEOs and politicos alike.” -Newsweek“This book is not just revolutionary but essential reading for everyone.”-Christian Science Monitor“Provocative....Musters ample proof that the payoff from heeding collective intelligence is greater than many of us imagine.” -BusinessWeek“There’s no danger of dumbing down for the masses who read this singular book.” -Entertainment Weekly“Clearly and persuasively written.” -Newsday“Convincingly argues that under the right circumstances, it’s the crowd that’s wiser than even society’s smartest individuals. New Yorker business columnist Surowiecki enlivens his argument with dozens of illuminating anecdotes and case studies from business, social psychology, sports and everyday life.” -Entertainment Weekly“The author has a knack for translating the most algebraic of research papers into bright expository prose.” -The New York Times Book ReviewDazzling . . . one of those books that will turn your world upside down. THE COACHPart I, Mike Leach after midnightOn Saturday afternoons in the fall of 1981 the roar of the crowd would echo across campus every time BYU scored a touchdown. It happened a lot that year. BYU led the nation in offense, scoring more than five hundred points, thanks to the arm of two-time all-American quarterback Jim McMahon. On his way to setting seventy NCAA passing records, McMahon had put Provo, Utah, on the college football map.Twenty-year-old Sharon Smith hardly noticed. But one evening that fall she was outside her apartment when a rugged-looking guy with wavy, shoulder-length hair approached. He introduced himself as Mike Leach, a twenty-year-old junior from Cody, Wyoming. He lived in the apartment complex next door. They even used the same laundry room. Turned out they had been neighbors for months.Smith was surprised they had never crossed paths. But Leach traveled a fair amount. He was a member of BYU’s rugby team. She was intrigued. Leach didn’t look like a BYU student. For one thing, his hair was too long. It should have been above his collar, according to BYU’s honor code. But Leach ignored the rule. That got him repeatedly summoned to the dean’s office. Still, Leach didn’t cut his hair. He didn’t talk like a BYU student either. His vocabulary was a little more colorful. So was his upbringing. He grew up in Wyoming with boys who spent Friday nights popping beers and getting in fistfights. Ranchers wearing sidearms would come into town for lunch at the local diner. Gunsmoke reru...

Wall Street has always been a dangerous place. Firms have been going in and out of business ever since speculators rst gathered under a buttonwood tree near the southern tip of Manhattan in the late eighteenth century. Despite the ongoing risks, during great swaths of its mostly charmed 142 years, Goldman Sachs has been both envied and feared for having the best talent, the best clients, and the best political connections, and for its ability to alchemize them into extreme pro tability and market prowess. Indeed, of the many ongoing mysteries about Goldman Sachs, one of the most overarching is just how it makes so much money, year in and year out, in good times and in bad, all the while revealing as little as possible to the outside world about how it does it. Another- equally confounding- mystery is the rm’s steadfast, zealous belief in its ability to manage its multitude of internal and external con icts better than any other beings on the planet. The combination of these two genetic strains- the ability to make boatloads of money at will and to appear to manage con icts that have humbled, then humiliated lesser rms- has made Goldman Sachs the envy of its nancial- services brethren. But it is also something else altogether: a symbol of immutable global power and unparalleled connections, which Goldman is shameless in exploiting for its own bene t, with little concern for how its success affects the rest of us. The rm has been described as everything from “a cunning cat that always lands on its feet” to, now famously, “a great vampire squid wrapped around the face of humanity, relentlessly jamming its blood funnel into anything that smells like money,” by Rolling Stone writer Matt Taibbi. The rm’s inexorable success leaves people wondering: Is Goldman Sachs better than everyone else, or have they found ways to win time and time again by cheating? But in the early twenty- rst century, thanks to the fallout from Goldman’s very success, the rm is looking increasingly vulnerable. To be sure, the rm has survived plenty of previous crises, starting with the Depression, when much of the rm’s capital was lost in a scam of its own creation, and again in the late 1940s, when Goldman was one of seventeen Wall Street rms put on trial and accused of collusion by the federal government. In the past forty years, as a consequence of numerous scandals involving rogue traders, suicidal clients, and charges of insider trading, the rm has come far closer- repeatedly- to nancial collapse than its reputation would attest. Each of these previous threats changed Goldman in some meaningful way and forced the rm to adapt to the new laws that either the market or regulators imposed. This time will be no different. What is different for Goldman now, though, is that for the rst time since 1932- when Sidney Weinberg, then Goldman’s senior partner, knew that he could quickly reach his friend, President- elect Franklin Delano Roosevelt- the rm no longer appears to have sympathetic high- level relationships in Washington. Goldman’s friends in high places, so crucial to the rm’s extraordinary success, are abandoning it. Indeed, in today’s charged political climate, which is polarized along socioeconomic lines, Goldman seems particularly isolated and demonized. Certainly Lloyd Blankfein, Goldman’s fty-six- year- old chairman and CEO, has no friend in President Barack Obama, despite being invited to a recent state dinner for the president of China. According to Newsweek columnist Jonathan Alter’s book The Promise, the “angriest” Obama got during his rst year in of ce was when he heard Blankfein justify the rm’s $16.2 billion of bonuses in 2009 by claiming “Goldman was never in danger of collapse” during the nancial crisis that began in 2007. According to Alter, President Obama told a friend that Blankfein’s statement was “ atly untrue” and added for good measure, “Thes...

-Titulo Original : Supreme Command Soldiers, Statesmen, And Leadership In Wartime-Fabricante : Anchor-Descripcion Original: The orthodoxy regarding the relationship between politicians and military leaders in wartime democracies contends that politicians should declare a military operations objectives and then step aside and leave the business of war to the military. In this timely and controversial examination of civilian-military relations in wartime democracies, Eliot A. Cohen chips away at this time-honored belief with case studies of statesmen who dared to prod, provoke, and even defy their military officers to great effect.Using the leadership of Abraham Lincoln, Georges Clemenceau, Winston Churchill, and David Ben-Gurion to build his argument, Cohen offers compelling proof that, as Clemenceau put it, “War is too important to leave to the generals.” By examining the shared leadership traits of four politicians who triumphed in extraordinarily varied military campaigns, Cohen argues that active statesmen make the best wartime leaders, pushing their military subordinates to succeed where they might have failed if left to their own devices. Thought provoking and soundly argued, Cohens Supreme Command is essential reading not only for military and political players but also for informed citizens and anyone interested in leadership. Review “An excellent, vividly written argument [that] could not have come at a better time. -The Washington Post“Brilliant. . . . Cohen argues convincingly that all great wartime leaders-Lincoln, Clemenceau, Churchill, Ben Gurion-never left the military to make its own policy, but constantly prodded, challenged, and gave it direction.” -National Review“A brilliant account of Lincoln, Churchill, Clemenceau and Ben Gurion-how each man handled the military leaders who served him.”-The Wall Street Journal“Fascinating.…Mr. Cohens point is ultimately not a sentimental but a substantive one.…His elucidation of his theory is organized tightly and rendered crisply.”- The New York Times“Superb . . . Cohen is persuasive in his argument.” -Los Angeles Times Book Review“Every so often a book appears just at the moment when it is most needed. . . . Such a book is Supreme Command, a superb study of civilian commanders in chief in times of war by the nations leading scholar of military-civilian relations.”-The Weekly Standard“Cohens well-written, absorbing critique of the normal theory is nothing short of crushing. . . . Invaluable.”-The New Leader “It is well worth devoting some energy to stamping on the myth that soldiers should be allowed to go about their business without pesky politicians getting in the way, and an important contribution to this demolition job has been made by Eliot Cohen.”-The Economist “Supreme Command is Cohen’s tour de force. . . . An eloquent, eminently approachable argument. . . . Essential reading.”-Choice“Supreme Command will be read as often by the professional military and the civil servants and politicians that employ them as is Samuel Huntington’s The Soldiers and the State and Morris Janowitz’s The Professional Soldier, both of which are true classics.”-The Washington Times“Intrinsically significant to the study of strategy and important on a practical level.”-Booklist“Important. . . . Many senior politicians now balk at asking tough questions or challenging military judgments even as they set ambitious goals. But Cohen’s logic remains sound, and it would be a shame if it took a calamity, resulting from a combination of military misjudgment and civilian passivity, before it gets a hearing.”-Foreign Affairs “Cohen, who writes with concision and insight, robustly argues that, far from being incompetent dunderheads, as commonly portrayed, civilian statesmen can be brilliant commanders. . . . Give[s] us much to ponder.”-Washington Monthly “Supreme Command is a must read for the highest civilian and military leadership and should also rank high on military professional reading lists.”-Naval War College Review“Essential reading for anyone concerned with current Unit...

CHAPTER ONE: THE OPPRESSING HAND OF AVARICEIt seems fitting that one of the first renowned activistsin the titanic struggle between labor and capital on this continent, Sarah G.Bagley, was an unassuming young woman off the farm, initially no different fromany of the thousands who emerged from rural New England in the 1820s and 1830s to become operatives in the textile mills of Lowell, Massachusetts, the nations earliest industrial city. This original population of American factory workers was, for a generation, the pride of the youthful United States, and Lowell a model of enlightened industrialism that visitors were drawn fromacross the country and around the world to behold with their own eyes.Bagley, like most of her peers, shared in the publics fascination; only after many years did she grow concerned about the systemsinjustices. In an era when few if any women spoke publicly she found her voice, first as a writer, then as a labor organizer, eventually leading the LowellFemale Labor Reform Association, which she helped create, in its historic fight for decent work conditions and a ten-hour day. At turns eloquent and caustic, her challenge to the status quo brought her into open conflict with Lowellspowerful mill and banking interests, the legislature of the state ofMassachusetts, and even many of her cohorts and friends.Born in Candia, New Hampshire, in 1806, where her parents, two brothers, and a sister farmed and operated a sawmill, Bagley worked as a schoolteacher before moving to Lowell in 1837. Beyond those fewfacts not much is known of her early life, although there are what may be intriguing glimpses into her background in two stories she wrote for the Lowell Offering, the independent literary journal published by women mill workers and celebrated here and in Europe as evidence of the superiority of Americas factory culture. In one tale Bagley describes a young farm girl unhappy withher fate as a household domestic, who, smitten by Lowell fever, dreams of being a worker in the booming mill city thirty miles distant. So poor she doesnt own a pair of shoes in which to travel, the little heroine nonetheless defies her cruel mistress and runs away. A kindly stage coach driver takes pity on the barefoot child he encounters walking along the road, her few possessions in a knotted bundle, and, asking no fare, delivers her to Lowell. There, within days, she is reborn, with new acquaintances, a job in a mill, and even the beginnings of a modest bank account. In the second story, a Lowell mill hand named Catherine B., suffering from dire homesickness, receives the terrible news that her mother and father have both died. Stricken by grief but determined to save her younger brother and sister from poverty, she rededicatesherself to the steady job she is fortunate to hold in a Lowell factory. For her brave display of practical benevolence, Catherine is wooed formarriage by a desirable man.Lowell fever the lure of the textile mills, of factory work at good wages, was remarked upon by many who flocked to the teeming little city. Not only did mill work pay better than the other jobs opento Yankee farm girls, chiefly those of teacher, nanny, or domestic, it offered escape from the other common alternative-grueling, unpaid labor on the family farm. The role of independent worker better suited the freeborn American women of Bagleys time. The first young people to come of age in the postrevolutionary era, they expected to make something of themselves andof life, Lucy Larcom, a Lowell operative who entered the mills at age eleven, later remembered. Young women like Larcom and Bagley, no less than John Greenleaf Whittier, a Lowell resident, Henry W. Longfellow, Nathaniel Hawthorne, and Ralph Waldo Emerson-who would write that the children ofNew England between 1820 and 1840 were born with knives in their brains were swept up in the intellectual ferment, height...

In the long view, history is seen as a series of events-but the course of those events is determined by individuals and their actions. During the next ten years, individual leaders will face significant transitions for their nations: the United States’ relationships with Iran and Israel will be undergoing changes, China will likely confront a major crisis, and the wars in the Islamic world will subside. Unexpected energy and technology developments will emerge, and labor shortages will begin to matter more than financial crises. Distinguished geopolitical forecaster George Friedmananalyzes these events from the perspectives of the men and women leading these global changes, focusing in particular onthe American president, who will require extraordinary skills to shepherd the United States through this transitional period. I wrote The Next 100 Years to explore the impersonal forces that shape history in the long run, but human beings don’t live in the long run. We live in the much shorter span in which our lives are shaped not so much by vast historical trends but by the specific decisions of specific individuals. This book is about the short run of the next ten years: the specific realities to be faced, the specific decisions to be made, and the likely consequences of those decisions. Most people think that the longer the time frame, the more unpredictable the future. I take the opposite view. Individual actions are the hardest thing to predict. In the course of a century, so many individual decisions are made that no single one of them is ever critical. Each decision is lost in the torrent of judgments that make up a century. But in the shorter time frame of a decade, individual decisions made by individual people, particularly those with political power, can matter enormously. What I wrote in The Next 100 Years is the frame for understanding this decade. But it is only the frame. Forecasting a century is the art of recognizing the impossible, then eliminating from consideration all the events that, at least logically, aren’t going to happen. The reason is, as Sherlock Holmes put it, “When you have eliminated the impossible, ...

Engrossing, character-driven, panoramic.” -The New York Times Book ReviewWe live in an era of soaring corporate profits and anemic wage gains, one in which low-paid jobs and blighted blue-collar communities have become a common feature of our nation’s landscape. Behind these trends lies a little-discussed problem: the decades-long decline in worker power. Award-winning journalist and author Steven Greenhouse guides us through the key episodes and trends in history that are essential to understanding some of our nation’s most pressing problems, including increased income inequality, declining social mobility, and the concentration of political power in the hands of the wealthy few. He exposes the modern labor landscape with the stories of dozens of American workers, from GM employees to Uber drivers to underpaid schoolteachers. Their fight to take power back is crucial for America’s future, and Greenhouse proposes concrete, feasible ways in which workers’ collective power can be-and is being-rekindled and reimagined in the twenty-first century.Beaten Down, Worked Up is a stirring and essential look at labor in America, poised as it is between the tumultuous struggles of the past and the vital, hopeful struggles ahead. A PBS NewsHour Now Read This Book Club Pick Review A PBS NewsHour Now Read This Book Club Pick “Greenhouse probably knows more about what is happening in the American workplace than anybody else in the country. . . He achieves a near-impossible task, producing a page-turning book that spans a century of worker strikes, without overcondensing or oversimplifying, and with plausible suggestions for the future. . . Great nonfiction requires great characters, and Greenhouse has the gift of portraiture. He is able to draw a complex, human portrait of a worker with a minimum of words, making the reader greedy for more details, not just about the policies but about the people. And he has both the newspaper writer’s ability to find the one or two individuals whose personal stories exemplify a larger point, and the historian’s ability to make what has already happened seem unlikely. He is skilled at homing in on the moments of the highest uncertainty, and transforming them into stories with quick and destabilizing twists and turns. . . Engrossing, character-driven, panoramic.”-Zephyr Teachout, The New York Times Book ReviewWhat I fear is that the there is a systematiceffort to wipe clean our national memory of the capacity and benefits ofworkers acting collectively and buildingstrong unions. Greenhouse’s book helps us remember that labor unions really did build the middle class, raise the dignity of workers, and civilize workplaces. It also gives us reason to believe that, as labor activist Rose Schneiderman poetically framed it, workers still “must have bread” but “must have roses, too.”-Robert Bruno, Perspectives on Work“[A] comprehensive primer on a subject that is intimately intertwined with our collective history. . . It is obvious that “Beaten Down, Worked Up” represents a monumental-and mostly successful-attempt to connect all the dots and thus provide a clear context for the ongoing societal debate about the efficacy of the labor movement and its place in contemporary culture. . . ForewordTo hear a new voice is one of the great excitements that a book can offer--and through Liao Yiwu we hear more than two dozen original voices that have a great deal to say. Liao is at once an unflinching observer and recorder, a shoe-leather reporter and an artful storyteller, an oral historian and deft mimic, a folklorist and satirist. Above all, he is a medium for whole muzzled swathes of Chinese society that the Party would like to pretend do not exist: hustlers and drifters, outlaws and street performers, the officially renegade and the physically handicapped, those who deal with human waste and with the wasting of humans, artists and shamans, crooks, even cannibals--and every one of them speaks more honestly than the official chronicles of Chinese life that are put out by the state in the name of the people.Liao was shaped as a writer by the harshest of experiences: he nearly starved to death as a child and his father was branded an enemy of the people; he was thrown in jail for writing poems that spoke truthfully about Chinas Communist Party and he was beaten in jail for refusing to shut up; and he discovered in jail the enormous value of listening to others like him whom the authorities wanted to keep forever unheard. So Liao writes with the courage of a man who knows loss and doesnt fear it. There is nothing to make him take notice like an official injunction against noticing, nothing to make him listen like official deafness, nothing that drives him to make us see than the blindness that Communist officialdom seeks to impose. But it is not merely defiance, and it is hardly political polemic, that drives the vitality of the stories in this collection. What makes Liaos encounters with his characters so powerful is the fact that he clearly delights in their humanity, however twisted its expression, and he shows his respect for his sub...

Book : Say Nothing A True Story Of Murder And Memory In...

-Titulo Original : Say Nothing A True Story Of Murder And Memory In Northern Ireland-Fabricante : Anchor-Descripcion Original: NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER *From the author of Empire of Pain-a stunning, intricate narrative about a notorious killing in Northern Ireland and its devastating repercussionsMasked intruders dragged Jean McConville, a 38-year-old widow and mother of 10, from her Belfast home in 1972. In this meticulously reported book-as finely paced as a novel-Keefe uses McConvilles murder as a prism to tell the history of the Troubles in Northern Ireland. Interviewing people on both sides of the conflict, he transforms the tragic damage and waste of the era into a searing, utterly gripping saga. -New York Times Book ReviewJean McConvilles abduction was one of the most notorious episodes of the vicious conflict known as The Troubles. Everyone in the neighborhood knew the I.R.A. was responsible. But in a climate of fear and paranoia, no one would speak of it. In 2003, five years after an accord brought an uneasy peace to Northern Ireland, a set of human bones was discovered on a beach. McConvilles children knew it was their mother when they were told a blue safety pin was attached to the dress--with so many kids, she had always kept it handy for diapers or ripped clothes.Patrick Radden Keefes mesmerizing book on the bitter conflict in Northern Ireland and its aftermath uses the McConville case as a starting point for the tale of a society wracked by a violent guerrilla war, a war whose consequences have never been reckoned with. The brutal violence seared not only people like the McConville children, but also I.R.A. members embittered by a peace that fell far short of the goal of a united Ireland, and left them wondering whether the killings they committed were not justified acts of war, but simple murders. From radical and impetuous I.R.A. terrorists such as Dolours Price, who, when she was barely out of her teens, was already planting bombs in London and targeting informers for execution, to the ferocious I.R.A. mastermind known as The Dark, to the spy games and dirty schemes of the British Army, to Gerry Adams, who negotiated the peace but betrayed his hardcore comrades by denying his I.R.A. past--Say Nothing conjures a world of passion, betrayal, vengeance, and anguish.Look for Patrick Radden Keefes latest bestseller, Empire of Pain Review National Book Critics Circle Award Winner *A New York Times Top Ten Book of the Year * A Washington Post Top Ten Book Of The Year Long * Listed for the National Book Award * TIME Magazine’s Best Nonfiction Book of the Year * Best Book of the Decade by EW and LitHub *Winner of the Orwell PrizeA Best Book of the Year: The Wall Street Journal, The Economist, The Chicago Tribune, GQ, Slate, NPR, Variety, Slate, Minneapolis Star Tribune, St. Louis Post Dispatch, The Dallas Morning News, Buzzfeed, Kirkus Reviews, and BookPageIf it seems as if Im reviewing a novel, it is because Say Nothing has lots of the qualities of good fiction, to the extent that Im worried Ill give too much away, and Ill also forget that Jean McConville was a real person, as were--are--her children. And her abductors and killers. Keefe is a terrific storyteller... He brings his characters to real life. The book is cleverly structured. We follow people--victim, perpetrator, back to victim--leave them, forget about them, rejoin them decades later. It can be read as a detective story. . .What Keefe captures best, though, is the tragedy, the damage and waste, and the idea of moral injury. . .Say Nothing is an excellent account of the Troubles. -RODDY DOYLE, The New York Times Book Review An exceptional new book. . .explores this brittle landscape [of Northern Ireland] to devastating effect. . .fierce reporting. . .The story of McConvilles disappearance, its crushing effects on her children, the discovery of her remains in 2003, and the efforts of authorities to hold someone accountable for her murder occupy the bulk of Say Nothing. Along the way, Mr. Keefe navigates the flashpoints, figures an...

Sides fills a conspicuous void in the history of the American West.” -N. Scott Momaday, The New York Times Book Review“From the lean crisp descriptions of the characters to the sights, sounds and smells of the trail, this is a crystal clear picture of the West.” -San Antonio Express News NATIONAL BESTSELLER * From the author of Ghost Soldiers comes a magnificent history of the American conquest of the West-a story full of authority and color, truth and prophecy (The New York Times Book Review). In the summer of 1846, the Army of the West marched through Santa Fe, en route to invade and occupy the Western territories claimed by Mexico. Fueled by the new ideology of “Manifest Destiny,” this land grab would lead to a decades-long battle between the United States and the Navajos, the fiercely resistant rulers of a huge swath of mountainous desert wilderness. At the center of this sweeping tale is Kit Carson, the trapper, scout, and soldier whose adventures made him a legend. Sides shows us how this illiterate mountain man understood and respected the Western tribes better than any other American, yet willingly followed orders that would ultimately devastate the Navajo nation. Rich in detail and spanning more than three decades, this is an essential addition to our understanding of how the West was really won. About the Author A native of Memphis, Hampton Sides is editor-atlarge for Outside magazine and the author of the international best-seller, Ghost Soldiers (Doubleday), which was the basis for the 2005 Miramax film, The Great Raid. Ghost Soldiers won the 2002 PEN USA award for non-fiction and the 2002 Discover Award from Barnes & Noble, and his magazine work has been twice nominated for National Magazine Awards for feature writing. He was only thirty-six years old, but it seemed he had done everything there was to do in the Western wilds--had been everywhere, met everyone. As a fur trapper, scout, and explorer, he had traveled untold thousands of miles in the Rockies, in the Great Basin, in the Sierra Nevada, in the Wind River Range, in the Tetons, in the coastal ranges of Oregon. As a hunter he had crisscrossed the Great Plains any number of times following the buffalo herds. He had seen the Pacific, been deep into Mexico, pushed far into British-held territories of the Northwest. He had traversed the Sonoran, Chihuahuan, and Mojave Deserts, gazed upon the Grand Canyon, stood at the life-leached margins of the Great Salt Lake. He had never seen the Hudson or the Potomac, but he had traced all the important rivers of the West--the Colorado, Platte, Sacramento, San Joaquin, Columbia, Green, Arkansas, Gila, Missouri, Powder, Big Horn, Snake, Salmon, Yellowstone, Rio Grande.Carson was present at the creation, it seemed. He had witnessed the dawn of the American West in all its vividness and brutality. In his constant travels he had caromed off of or intersected with nearly every major tribal group and person of consequence. He had lived the sweep of the Western experience with a directness few ot...

Targeting American utility companies, NATO, and electric grids in Eastern Europe, the strikes grew ever more brazen. They culminated in the summer of 2017, when the malware known as NotPetya was unleashed, penetrating, disrupting, and paralyzing some of the worlds largest businesses-from drug manufacturers to software developers to shipping companies. At the attacks epicenter in Ukraine, ATMs froze. The railway and postal systems shut down. Hospitals went dark. NotPetya spread around the world, inflicting an unprecedented ten billion dollars in damage-the largest, most destructive cyberattack the world had ever seen. The hackers behind these attacks are quickly gaining a reputation as the most dangerous team of cyberwarriors in history: a group known as Sandworm. Working in the service of Russias military intelligence agency, they represent a persistent, highly skilled force, one whose talents are matched by their willingness to launch broad, unrestrained attacks on the most critical infrastructure of their adversaries. They target government and private sector, military and civilians alike.A chilling, globe-spanning detective story, Sandworm considers the danger this force poses to our national security and stability. As the Kremlins role in foreign government manipulation comes into greater focus, Sandworm exposes the realities not just of Russias global digital offensive, but of an era where warfare ceases to be waged on the battlefield. It reveals how the lines between digital and physical conflict, between wartime and peacetime, have begun to blur-with world-shaking implications. For the next two years, until their whereabouts were betrayed to the Gestapo, they and another family lived cloistered in the “Secret Annex” of an old office building. Cut off from the outside world, they faced hunger, boredom, the constant cruelties of living in confined quarters, and the ever-present threat of discovery and death. Chapter 1Mark Foo’s Last RidePublished in Outside, May 1995Twenty-two miles down Highway 1 from San Francisco, a craggy fist of land called Pillar Point thrusts emphatically into the cold Pacific. Friday, December 23, 1994, dawned fair over this stretch of coast. Mountainous waves crashed against the headlands, spraying up billows of mist that unfurled languidly across the beaches. Beyond the end of the point, some fifteen surfers bobbed in the winter sunlight, scanning the horizon for approaching swells. It was not uncommon to see surfers off the point-a spot they called Mavericks-dressed in heavy, hooded wetsuits and sitting astride oversize boards. But the hovering helicopter, the three boats of photographers just outside the surf line, and the throng of spectators lining the cliffs suggested this was no ordinary surf session. For more than a week, the largest, most perfectly shaped waves in a decade had been thundering over the reef at the end of Pillar Point. Word traveled quickly over the international surfers’ grapevine: Mavericks, which had recently emerged as one of the world’s heaviest waves, was going off. Upon hearing the news, a trio of renowned big-wave surfers from the Hawaiian Islands-Brock Little, Ken Bradshaw, and Mark Foo-hurried to California to join the local crew in the surf. The names and faces of the three Hawaiians were familiar to most of the five million surfers on the planet. Who among them was top dog in the surf was a matter of lively debate, but there was no disagreement over who cut the highest profile out of the water.Mark Sheldon Foo was not afflicted with an excess of modesty or self-doubt. In his resume, he unabashedly described himself as “surfing’s consummate living legend.” Detractors called him grandiose, and worse, but it didn’t crimp Foo’s style. In his Filofax were the phone numbers of surfing’s premier photographers, whom he cultivated and kept in close contact with. His picture appeared in print with uncanny frequency, and he hosted a surfing show on cable television.Foo made no bones about his thirst for fame or his strategy for achieving it: ride the world’s biggest waves with singular audacit...
