Book : Natashas Dance A Cultural History Of Russia - Figes,.

-Titulo Original : Natashas Dance A Cultural History Of Russia-Fabricante : Picador-Descripcion Original: History on a grand scale--an enchanting masterpiece that explores the making of one of the worlds most vibrant civilizationsA Peoples Tragedy, wrote Eric Hobsbawm, did more to help us understand the Russian Revolution than any other book I know. Now, in Natashas Dance, internationally renowned historian Orlando Figes does the same for Russian culture, summoning the myriad elements that formed a nation and held it together.Beginning in the eighteenth century with the building of St. Petersburg--a window on the West--and culminating with the challenges posed to Russian identity by the Soviet regime, Figes examines how writers, artists, and musicians grappled with the idea of Russia itself--its character, spiritual essence, and destiny. He skillfully interweaves the great works--by Dostoevsky, Stravinsky, and Chagall--with folk embroidery, peasant songs, religious icons, and all the customs of daily life, from food and drink to bathing habits to beliefs about the spirit world. Figess characters range high and low: the revered Tolstoy, who left his deathbed to search for the Kingdom of God, as well as the serf girl Praskovya, who became Russian operas first superstar and shocked society by becoming her owners wife. Like the European-schooled countess Natasha performing an impromptu folk dance in Tolstoys War and Peace, the spirit of Russianness is revealed by Figes as rich and uplifting, complex and contradictory--a powerful force that unified a vast country and proved more lasting than any Russian ruler or state. Review “Scintillating. . .an exceptional history of Russian culture and a joy to read.” San Francisco Chronicle“Stunning and ambitious. . .Figes captures nothing less than Russians complex and protean notions regarding their national identity.” The Atlantic Monthly“Staggering. . .A vivid, entertaining, and enlightening account of what it has meant to be culturally a Russian over the last three centuries.” Los Angeles Times“[A] masterly work.” New York Review of Books“A big, bold, interpretative cultural history.” Foreign Affairs About the Author Orlando Figes is the author of A Peoples Tragedy, Natashas Dance, and The Crimean War, among other books. His works have been translated into twenty-seven languages. A professor of history at Birkbeck, University of London and a frequent contributor to The New York Review of Books, Figes is the recipient of the Wolfson History Prize, the W. H. Smith Literary Award, and the Los Angeles Times Book Prize. He lives in London...

Book : Sleights Of Mind What The Neuroscience Of Magic...

-Titulo Original : Sleights Of Mind What The Neuroscience Of Magic Reveals About Our Everyday Deceptions-Fabricante : Picador-Descripcion Original: Stephen Macknik and Susana Martinez-Conde, the founders of the exciting new discipline of neuromagic, have convinced some of the worlds greatest magicians to allow scientists to study their techniques for tricking the brain. The implications of neuromagic go beyond illuminating our behavior; early research points to new approaches for everything from the diagnosis of autism to marketing techniques and education. Fun and accessible, Sleights of Mind is a tour through consciousness, attention, and deception via the marriage of professional magic and cognitive neuroscience (Vanessa Schipani, The Scientist). Review “Sleights of Mind makes brain science so much fun, youll swear the authors are as clever as Houdini.” Scientific American Book Club“Magic is the place where our senses and beliefs fail us in magnificent ways. In this exciting book Stephen, Susana, and Sandra explore what magic and illusions can teach us about our fallible human nature--coming up with novel and fascinating observations.” Dan Ariely, author of Predictability Irrational“Steve and Susana are two of the most innovative scientists I know. They arent content to just conduct elegant experiments (although they do plenty of those, too). Instead, theyre determined to explore those places where neuroscience intersects the mysterious and the magical, from visual illusions to Vegas card tricks. This book doesnt just change the way you think about sleight of hand and David Copperfield - it will also change the way you think about the mind.” Jonah Lehrer, author of How We Decide and Proust Was A Neuroscientist.“Ive long wished that there was a book that explained the art of magic from the point of view of cognitive neuroscience. Magic is a goldmine of information about the brain, as well as a source of fascination to laypeople. This is the book weve all been waiting for.” Steven Pinker PhD, author of The Stuff of Thought“This is a highly original book. Science and magic have much in common. They both take seemingly inexplicable events and provide elegantly simple answers that enthrall the observer. The authors have done an admirable job in exploring this idea and also suggest ways in which the two disciplines can cross fertilize each other.” VS Ramachandran MD PhD, author of Phantoms in the Brain“Stephen Macknik and Susana Martinez-Condes Sleights of Mind gives non-magicians a real up-close look at the true secrets of magic. They are revealing the real knowledge jealously guarded by all great performers...I know my fellow magicians are all going to be as jazzed as I am to read about how sophisticated magical techniques and state-of-the-art brain science combine.” Mac King, headliner, Harrahs Las Vegas“In Sleights of Mind, authors Stephen Macknik and Susana Martinez-Conde persistently remind us that the human mind is a bad data-taking device. And its this fact that enables the science of magic to exist at all.” Neil deGrasse Tyson, author of The Pluto Files“The authors make easily comprehensible the effects of neural adaptation, afterimages, occlusion, perspective, saccades, inattentional blindness, expectations and the pliability of memory...Entertaining.” Kirkus“In their illuminating book, brain experts Martinez-Conde and Macknik make their case that magicians are some of the most skilled neuroscientists around...By tricking readers into having fun learning neuroscience, the authors bring the newly minted field of neuromagic to center stage.” Laura Sanders, Science News“This book offers a revolutionary look a the science behind magic--what leads the mind to believe tricks are real and how magicians actually use the brains own logic to acheive this.” Phillip Manning, Science Book News“If you want to learn more about neuromagic, take a peek at Macknik and Martinez-Condes most recent book. It explains how theyve investigated the tricks of some of the worlds greatest magicians to find out how the brain...

Book : Tears In The Darkness The Story Of The Bataan Death..

-Titulo Original : Tears In The Darkness The Story Of The Bataan Death March And Its Aftermath-Fabricante : Picador-Descripcion Original: About the Author Michael Norman, a former reporter for The New York Times, teaches narrative journalism at New York University. With Elizabeth M. Norman, he is the author of Tears in the Darkness: The Story of the Bataan Death March and Its Aftermath.Elizabeth M. Norman, the author of two books about war, teaches at New York University’s Steinhardt School of Education. Tears in the Darkness is an altogether new look at World War II that exposes the myths of war and shows the extent of suffering and loss on both sides. For the first four months of 1942, U.S., Filipino, and Japanese soldiers fought what was Americas first major land battle of World War II, the battle for the tiny Philippine peninsula of Bataan. It ended with the surrender of 76,000 Filipinos and Americans, the single largest defeat in American military history. The defeat, though, was only the beginning, as Michael and Elizabeth M. Norman make dramatically clear in this powerfully original book. From then until the Japanese surrendered in August 1945, the prisoners of war suffered an ordeal of unparalleled cruelty and savagery: forty-one months of captivity, starvation rations, dehydration, hard labor, deadly disease, and torture far from the machinations of General Douglas MacArthur. The Normans bring to the story remarkable feats of reportage and literary empathy. Their protagonist, Ben Steele, is a figure out of Hemingway: a young cowboy turned sketch artist from Montana who joined the army to see the world. Juxtaposed against Steeles story and the sobering tale of the Death March and its aftermath is the story of a number of Japanese soldiers. Review “Deeply researched and finely documented, Tears in the Darkness is written brilliantly in lucid prose. . . . A model of excellence in historical bookmaking . . . I couldnt put it down.” Philip Kopper, The Washington Times“An extremely detailed and thoroughly chilling treatment that, given the passage of time and thinning of ranks, could serve as popular historys final say on the subject.” Richard Pyle, Associated Press“Balanced, beautifully written . . . Many books have examined World War II in the Philippines, but none of them pack the punch of or are as beautifully written as this compelling volume. . . . A superb book about the unspeakable tragedy of war and the triumph of the human spirit.” Terry Hartle, The Christian Science Monitor“A lean, moving account...many books have described the atrocities. Prisoners were starved, beaten, and killed. This is different . . . Powerful.” USA Today“A searing narrative [and] an indispensable addition to every World War II collection.” Bryce Christensen, Booklist“No aspect of this battle or the infamous march that followed seems to have been overlooked. It is possible to buy volumes devoted to Bataans nurses, its military chaplains and, in Hampton Sidess best-selling 2001 book, Ghost Soldiers, the men who rescued its survivors. It was not clear that this wall needed another brick. But then you pick up Michael Norman and Elizabeth M. Normans calm, stirring and humane Tears in the Darkness: The Story of the Bataan Death March and Its Aftermath, and you think: yes, we needed another brick.” Dwight Garner, The New York Times“Ben Steele, a young cowboy on his home range in Montana who had enlisted as a soldier in World War II, was caught up in the battle for Bataan in the Philippines, then in the ensuing death march as a prisoner of the Japanese, which he barely survived. Beginning with harrowing sketches of that experience, and in the course of various adventures and misadventures, he continued to draw and paint, and has since become a truly distinguished artist of the West. Tears in the Darkness is a well-told, well-researched, and moving narrative.” Peter Matthiessen, author of Shadow Country“Assiduous account of the Japanese conquest of the Philippines in World War II and the fate of the American garrison there... A Janet Maslin (New York Times) Top 10 Pick for 2011A Washington Post Notable Nonfiction Book for 2011A Richmond Times Dispatch Top Book for 2011A minute-by-minute account of the attempted assassination of Ronald Reagan, to coincide with the thirtieth anniversaryOn March 30, 1981, President Ronald Reagan was just seventy days into his first term of office when John Hinckley Jr. opened fire outside the Washington Hilton Hotel, wounding the president, press secretary James Brady, a Secret Service agent, and a D.C. police officer. For years, few people knew the truth about how close the president came to dying, and no one has ever written a detailed narrative of that harrowing day. Now, drawing on exclusive new interviews and never-before-seen documents, photos, and videos, Del Quentin Wilber tells the electrifying story of a moment when the nation faced a terrifying crisis that it had experienced less than twenty years before, the assassination of President John F. Kennedy. With cinematic clarity, we see Secret Service agent Jerry Parr, whose fast reflexes saved the presidents life; the brilliant surgeons who operated on Reagan as he was losing half his blood; and the small group of White House officials frantically trying to determine whether the country was under attack. Most especially, we encounter the man code-named Rawhide, a leader of uncommon grace who inspired affection and awe in everyone who worked with him.Ronald Reagan was the only serving U.S. president to survive being shot in an assassination attempt.* Rawhide Down is the first true record of the day and events that literally shaped Reagans presidency and sealed his image in the modern American political firmament.*There have been many assassination attempts on U.S. presidents, four of which were successful: Abraham Lincoln, James A. Garfield, William McKinley, and John F. Kennedy. President Theodore Roosevelt was injured in an assassination attempt after leaving office. In clear prose, we learn that Reagan was far closer to death than was previously thought.” David Baldacci, The Washington Post“A page-turner from beginning to end… You will learn a lot about an event that came razor-close to changing America forever.” Bill OReilly, author of the forthcoming Killing Lincoln: The Assassination that Changed America Forever“A harrowing story, more so than it seemed at the time, and Wilber, a reporter for the Washington Post, has tracked down virtually everyone who had anything to do with protecting the President or with saving his life at the hospital.” The New Yorker“In this eye-opening book of solid journalism, we learn just how close Ronald Reagan, code-named Rawhide by the Secret Service, came to being the president with the second shortest time in office.” Bob Hoover, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette“With a reporters eye for detail and a screenwriters talent for the cinematic, he invests such immediacy in Rawhide Down that the reader is thrust back 30 years in time.” Richmond Times-Dispatch“A tense, riveting account of that day.” Dallas Morning News“Detailed and dramatic… Mr. Wilber, a ...

Book : A Fort Of Nine Towers An Afghan Family Story - Omar,.

-Titulo Original : A Fort Of Nine Towers An Afghan Family Story-Fabricante : Picador-Descripcion Original: About the Author Qais Akbar Omar (whose first name is pronounced “Kice”) manages his family’s carpet business in Kabul and writes books. In 2007, he was a visiting scholar at the University of Colorado. He has studied business at Brandeis University and is currently pursuing an MFA in creative writing at Boston University. Omar has lectured on Afghan carpets in Afghanistan, Europe, and the United States. He is the coauthor, with Stephen Landrigan, of Shakespeare in Kabul. Twenty-three years ago after the Soviets left and before the Taliban came to power Kabul was a garden where seven-year-old Qais Akbar Omar flew kites from the roof of his grandfathers house. Then came the hollow sounds of rocket fire as the Mujahedin, self-proclaimed holy warriors, took over Afghanistan, and the country erupted in civil war. Omars family fled, leaving everything behind to take shelter in an old fort. But after a narrow escape from death, his father decided that the family must leave the country.Yet the journey proved more difficult than anticipated, and in this stunning coming-of-age memoir, Omar offers a moving recollection of these events a story of daily hardships, relieved by moments of joy and immense beauty. Inflected with folktales and steeped in poetry, A Fort of Nine Towers is a life-affirming triumph. Review “Poetic, powerful, and unforgettable.” Khaled Hosseini, New York Times bestselling author of The Kite Runner and And the Mountains Echoed“Mind-boggling yet matter-of-fact...A riveting story of war as seen through a childs eyes and summoned from an adults memory.” The New York Times Book Review“A Fort of Nine Towers captures a time and a place unknown to most Americans….Exceptional.” The Boston Globe“An extraordinary memoir...Even more haunting than The Kite Runner.” The Philadelphia Inquirer“Beautifully written, with the pacing and suspense of a novel...[A Fort of Nine Towers] is deeply fulfilling, remarkable not least because Omar lived to tell the tale.” The Washington Post“A classic autobiography of universal resonance...Tender and hopeful against all odds.” Newsweek“From squatting inside a cave in the head of a Bamyan Buddha to escaping torture at the teeth of a dog and his master, Qais Akbar Omars tale of one familys journey during the Afghan civil war is inscriptional: its images carve themselves into the readers mind. Unlike most accounts of life in exile, A Fort of Nine Towers never leaves Afghanistan, as a boy and his family remain trapped within the nations borders by familial ties and by war. This book is essential reading for anyone eager to learn what more than three decades of war have cost the Afghan people.” Eliza Griswold, author of the New York Times bestseller The Tenth Parallel: Dispatches from the Fault Line Between Christianity and Islam“At a time when Afghanistan threatens to recede into a bloody and debased footnote, Qais Akbar Omar reminds us of the honor and courage of his people. A remarkable feat of memory and imagination.” Joydeep Roy-Bhattacharya, author of The Watch and The Storyteller of Marrakesh“In this stark, unflinching memoir, Qais Akbar Omar illuminates the beauty and tragedy of a country pushed to the brink by war. She appears regularly on PBSs Washington Week, CBSs Face the Nation, ABCs This Week, and other television and radio programs. Ball is the winner of numerous awards for her coverage of American politics, including the Gerald R. Ford Journalism Prize and the Toner Prize for Excellence in Political Reporting. She grew up in Idaho and Colorado and lives in the Washington, DC, area with her husband and three children. NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER A riveting inside account of the unprecedented rise to power and unmatched political legacy of the first woman Speaker of the House, by award-winning journalist Molly Ball Nancy Pelosi’s opposition to Donald Trump has made her an icon of the Resistance, featured in viral memes clapping sardonically at the president or ripping up his State of the Union address. But the real Nancy Pelosi is neither the shrill partisan featured in thousands of attack ads nor the cautious corporatist reviled by the far left. She’s the rare politician who still knows how to get big things done a master of legislative power whose policy accomplishments have touched millions of American lives, from providing universal access to health care to reforming Wall Street to allowing gay people to serve openly in the military. She’s done it all at a time of historic polarization and gridlock, despite being routinely underestimated by allies and opponents alike.Ball’s nuanced, page-turning portrait takes readers inside Pelosi’s life and times, from her roots in urban Baltimore to her formative years as a party activist and fundraiser, from the fractious politics of San Francisco to high-stakes congressional negotiations with multiple presidents. The result is a compelling portrait of a barrier-breaking woman that sheds new light on American political history. Based on exclusive interviews with the Speaker and deep background reporting, Ball shows Pelosi through a thoroughly modern lens to explain how this extraordinary woman has met her moment. Review One of the Washington Posts 50 Notable Works of Nonfiction of 2020 * An Elle Best Book of 2020 (So Far) “[An] illuminating new biography of the most powerful woman in American politics.” Michelle Goldberg, The New York Times Book Review“[A] smart, solid biography with a lesson: Despite our current fixation on political showmanship, politics works best in a complicated democracy like ours when its practitioners can navigate their way through the byzantine cloakrooms of power. Joe Klein, The Washington Post “Theres a delicious scene in Pelosi where she chases down a Republican congressman who had disparaged her and shouts, ‘Youre an insignificant person,’ at him again and again. Whether taking on a low-level back-bencher in the House or President Trump in the Oval Office, Nancy Pelosi could never be called insignificant, as Molly Ball so revealingly documents in this absorbing book.” David Maraniss, Pulitzer Prize-winning author of First in His Class: The Biography of Bill Clinton“Even dedicated political junkies will learn something new about the controversial figure in this comprehensive look.” Good Housekeeping“Molly Ball’s Pelosi is the inspirational political book we’ve all been waiting for. In this dark season, Ball shines a light on the nearly heroic Speaker and her unwavering commitment to truth, justice, and well-tailored jackets. This is the definitive biography of an icon.” Vanessa Grigoriadis, author of Blurred Lines: Rethinking Sex, Power, and Consent on Campus“Molly Ball’s revealing, essential biography…captures all the facets of Madam Speaker: steely combatant, peerless number cruncher, master of details.” O Magazine“A top-notch political biography.” Kirkus Reviews, *starred review*“An engrossing and deeply reported political biography of an astute and powerful woman. Book : This Fight Is Our Fight The Battle To Save Americas..

-Titulo Original : This Fight Is Our Fight The Battle To Save Americas Middle Class-Fabricante : Picador-Descripcion Original: About the Author Elizabeth Warren, one of the nation’s most influential progressives and a longtime champion of working families and the middle class, is the senior senator from Massachusetts. A former Harvard Law School professor, she is the author of ten previous books, including A Fighting Chance, a national bestseller that received widespread critical acclaim. The mother of two and grandmother of three, she lives in Cambridge, Massachusetts, with her husband, Bruce Mann. #1 New York Times BestsellerThe fiery U.S. Senator from Massachusetts and bestselling author offers a passionate, inspiring book about why our middle class is under siege and how we can win the fight to save itWith a New AfterwordSenator Elizabeth Warren has long been an outspoken champion of America’s middle class, and by the time the people of Massachusetts elected her in 2012, she had become one of the country’s leading progressive voices. Now, at a perilous moment for our nation, she has written a book that is at once an illuminating account of how we built the strongest middle class in history, a scathing indictment of those who have spent the past thirty-five years undermining working families, and a rousing call to action.Warren grew up in Oklahoma, and she’s never forgotten how difficult it was for her mother and father to hold on at the ragged edge of the middle class. An educational system that offered opportunities for all made it possible for her to achieve her dream of going to college, becoming a teacher, and, later, attending law school. But now, for many, these kinds of opportunities are gone, and a government that once looked out for working families is instead captive to the rich and powerful. More than seventy-five years ago, President Franklin Roosevelt and his New Deal ushered in an age of widespread prosperity; in the 1980s, President Ronald Reagan reversed course and sold the country on the disastrous fiction called trickle-down economics. Now, with the election of Donald Trump a con artist who promised to drain the swamp of special interests and then surrounded himself with billionaires and lobbyists the middle class is being pushed ever closer to collapse.Written in the candid, high-spirited voice that is Warren’s trademark, This Fight Is Our Fight tells eye-opening stories about her battles in the Senate and vividly describes the experiences of hard-working Americans who have too often been given the short end of the stick. Elizabeth Warren has had enough of phony promises and a government that no longer serves its people she won’t sit down, she won’t be silenced, and she will fight back. Review “This Fight Is Our Fight is a smart, tough-minded book....What Democrats need right now is a reason to keep fighting. And that’s something Warren’s muscular, unapologetic book definitely offers. It’s an important contribution.” Paul Krugman, The New York Times Book ReviewThis Fight Is Our Fight provides an insider’s look at the machinations that are undermining the U.S. economy and political system. Warren spells out what is happening and what needs to be done to reverse the slide....Warren is outspoken, personable, emphatic, dedicated....It is unusual for any politician to be so open. New York Journal of BooksGirded for battle, the senior senator from Massachusetts forcefully lays out the bleak picture of an American government increasingly controlled by corporate greed and special interests....The author sounds the alarm that an oligarchy is in the making, and her urgency is palpable and necessary. Inspiring words to empower Warrens marching army. Kirkus Reviews(starred review...

A New York Times Notable Book of 2014A Time Magazine Notable Book of 2014Olivia Laings widely acclaimed account of how writers in the grip of alcoholism created some of the greatest works of American literatureIn The Trip to Echo Spring, Olivia Laing takes a journey across America, examining the links between creativity and alcohol in the work and lives of six extraordinary men: F. Scott Fitzgerald, Ernest Hemingway, Tennessee Williams, John Berryman, John Cheever, and Raymond Carver. Captivating and highly original, The Trip to Echo Spring strips away the myth of the alcoholic writer to reveal the terrible price creativity can exert. Review “Most beguiling and incisive.” The New York Times“[A] charming and gusto-driven look at the alcoholic insanity of six famous writers…There is much to learn from Laings supple scholarship--and much to enjoy, too.” Lawrence Osborne, The New York Times Book Review“Exquisite . . . Laing, wisely, doesnt reach any one-size-fits-all conclusions about the bond between the pen and the bottle . . . A marvelous writer.” Maureen Corrigan, NPRs Fresh Air“Laing dives deep, plummeting into some of her subjects darkest impulses . . . The result is a multilayered biography that reads quick as fiction, and is teeming with fantastically melancholy details of the writers we thought we knew.” Lauren Viera, Chicago Tribune“[An] eccentric, impassioned, belle-lettristic, graceful and haunted book . . . [Laings] story has a rambling, daydream quality.” The Wall Street Journal“The Trip to Echo Spring is a rewarding book to wend your way through even if the writers Laing focuses on Cheever, Fitzgerald, Hemingway, Tennessee Williams, Raymond Carver and the American poet John Berryman--arent among your particular favorites. Laing writes a fluid, fertile nonfiction... Although Laing isnt an alcoholic herself, she alludes to several adult relationships blighted by the disease, and her second-hand understanding of it is manifestly detailed and deep...” Laura Miller, Salon“Laings writing is beautiful, her insights frequently surprising and powerful. The books greatest virtue, however, is that it positively swells with empathy.” Rosie Schaap, Slate“Olivia Laings book is an exploration of alcoholism in six 20th-century American writers...that dazzles in both the scope of its ambition and the depths it reaches in analyzing its subjects. Laing, through the lens of extensive research both into the writers biographies and into literature about alcoholism as a disease, paints these writers with a brush that renders them in new light....While there may be more uplifting books about writing and writers, few present the reader with such sobering realities about the downside to all those romantic, drunken nights in Paris or Key West.” Interview“Olivia Laing emerges as a kind of British Susan Orlean, combining nonfiction narrative, travel writing, literary criticism and a touch of memoir in a personable style....Her descriptions of the landscape she sees, the conversations she overhears and the people she runs into are sparkling....Without building to a specific point or climax, Laing keeps you on board through her journey...” Newsday“The Trip to Echo Spring...contains astute observations about addiction....Laing provides a remarkably cogent explanation of alcohols effects on the brain and emotions.” Tampa Bay Times“The Trip to Echo Spring, Olivia Laings remarkable book abou...

Book : No Impact Man The Adventures Of A Guilty Liberal Who.

-Titulo Original : No Impact Man The Adventures Of A Guilty Liberal Who Attempts To Save The Planet, And The Discoveries He Makes About Himself And Our Way Of Life In The Process-Fabricante : Picador-Descripcion Original: About the Author Colin Beavan is the author of No Impact Man as well as two previous books that have absolutely nothing to do with the environment: Fingerprints: The Murder Case That Launched Forensic Science and Operation Jedburgh: D-Day and America’s First Shadow War. His writing has appeared in Esquire, The Atlantic, and the New York Times. He lives in New York City. Bill McKibben meets Bill Bryson in this seriously engaging look at one mans decision to put his money where his mouth is and go off the grid for one year while still living in New York City to see if its possible to make no net impact on the environment. In No Impact Man, a guilty liberal finally snaps, swears off plastic, goes organic, becomes a bicycle nut, turns off his power, and generally becomes a tree-hugging lunatic who tries to save the polar bears and the rest of the planet from environmental catastrophe while dragging his baby daughter and Prada-wearing, Four Seasons-loving wife along for the ride. And thats just the beginning. In other words, no trash, no toxins in the water, no elevators, no subway, no products in packaging, no air-conditioning, no television . . .What would it be like to try to live a no-impact lifestyle? Is it possible? Could it catch on? Is living this way more satisfying or less satisfying? Harder or easier? Is it worthwhile or senseless? Are we all doomed or can our culture reduce the barriers to sustainable living so it becomes as easy as falling off a log? These are the questions at the heart of this whole mad endeavor, via which Colin Beavan hopes to explain to the rest of us how we can realistically live a more eco-effective and by turns more content life in an age of inconvenient truths. Review “The No Impact Experiment changed Colin Beavan and reading No Impact Man will change you.” Annie Leonard, creator of The Story of Stuff“Far from being a movement of self-denial and stern lectures about having too much fun, the no impact mind-set is actually about increasing fulfillment and happiness by asking us to think about what makes us truly happy and whats really important in our lives.” Arianna Huffington“No Impact Man is a deeply honest and riveting account of the year in which Colin Beavan and his wife attempted to do what most of us would consider impossible. What might seem inconvenient to the point of absurdity instead teaches lessons that all of us need to learn. We as individuals can take action to address important social problems. One person can make a difference.” Marion Nestle, author of What to Eat“Profound . . . Beavans project has significant emotional and ecological heft. No Impact Man works, most of all, because Beavan is intelligent, funny, provocative, and, above all, honest.” The Philadelphia Inquirer“Theres something inspiring about a smart, committed person coming to an elegantly simple conclusion.” Los Angeles Times“You have to give Colin Beavan credit; the man put his money where his mouth is. A self-proclaimed guilty liberal tired of the worlds general ecological decline, he decided to change his life. And in no small way. Even better, he did it with a sense of humor.” The Boston Globe“Theres something of Thoreau in Colin Beavans great project--but a fully engaged, connected, and right-this-minute helpful version. Its a moment when we need to have as little impact in our own lives as possible--and as much impact in our political lives as we can possibly muster. Beavan shows how!” Bill McKibben, author of Deep Economy“From their first baby steps (no takeout) to their giant leap (no toilet paper), the Beavans experiment in ecological responsibility was a daunting escapade in going green . . . So fervent as to make Al Gore look like a profligate wastrel, Beavans commitment to the cause is, nonetheless, infectiously inspiring and uproariously entertaining.” Booklist“With thorough research, Beavan updates his blog (noimpactman ) wi...

A former reporter for The Wall Street Journal, she has written for The New Yorker, The New York Times, Harper’s, and The Baffler, among other publications. PULITZER PRIZE FINALISTONE OF THE NEW YORK TIMES BOOK REVIEWS 10 BEST BOOKS OF THE YEARWINNER OF THE KIRKUS PRIZEWhen feminist writer Susan Faludi learned that her seventy-six-year-old father long estranged and living in Hungary had undergone sex reassignment surgery, the revelation would launch her on an extraordinary inquiry into the meaning of identity in the modern world and in her own haunted family saga. How was this new parent who identified as “a complete woman now” connected to the silent, explosive, and ultimately violent father she had known, the photographer who’d built his career on the alteration of images?Faludi chases that mystery into the recesses of her suburban childhood and her father’s many previous incarnations: American dad, Alpine mountaineer, swashbuckling adventurer in the Amazon outback, Jewish fugitive in Holocaust Budapest. When the author travels to Hungary to reunite with her father, she drops into a labyrinth of dark histories and dangerous politics in a country hell-bent on repressing its past and constructing a fanciful and virulent nationhood.Faludi’s struggle to come to grips with her father’s metamorphosis takes her across borders historical, political, religious, sexual to bring her face to face with the question of the age: Is identity something you “choose,” or is it the very thing you can’t escape? Review “This book is a masterpiece.” Ann Patchett“In the Darkroom is an absolute stunner of a memoir probing, steel-nerved, moving in ways you’d never expect. Ms. Faludi is determined both to demystify the father of her youth ‘a simultaneously inscrutable and volatile presence, a black box and a detonator’ and to reexamine the very notion and nature of identity.” The New York Times (daily review)“Penetrating and lucid...In the Darkroom is Faludi’s rich, arresting, and ultimately generous investigation of her father.” The New York Times Book Review (front page)“A gripping and honest personal journey...that ultimately transcends family and addresses much bigger questions of identity and reinvention.” Entertainment Weekly“Riveting...Ms. Faludi unfolds her father’s story like the plot of a detective novel.” The Wall Street Journal“Many great writers eventually turn to biography, but rarely does it so directly crash into their lifelong intellectual pursuits....Few can dissect a prevailing cultural norm as well as Faludi can.” The Washington Post“Fascinating.” People“Faludi’s eloquent, timely, and sweeping-yet-intimate new book...is a mash-up of genres and themes about family secrets, masculinity and femininity, feminism, violence, the Holocaust, taking revenge. Knitting it all together are questions of identity: Who or what makes us who and what we are? How immutable is the end result?” Elle“Sometimes, reality delivers up not just a remarkable story, but a remarkable story containing a set of parallel motifs that seem too absurdly perfect to be credible. . . . Most of In the Darkroom, and the best of it, consists of the epic battle, and eventually the epic rapprochement, between Susan and [her father] Stefanie an irresistible force meeting an immovable object.” Slate“Extraordinary: part riveting family memoir, part revelatory Holocaust history, but most of all a profound meditation on human identity....In the Darkroom is nothing if not timely. It is also highly significant....We live in an age overflowing with bitter battles over identity with too little of Susan Faludi’s humane desire to understand.” The National Book Review“A wrought and multilayered memoir...Powerful and absorbing.” Publishers Weekly (star...

Book : A Fighting Chance - Warren, Elizabeth

-Titulo Original : A Fighting Chance-Fabricante : Picador-Descripcion Original: About the Author Elizabeth Warren is the senior senator from Massachusetts. A former Harvard Law School professor, she is the author of eight books, including All Your Worth: The Ultimate Lifetime Money Plan and The Two-Income Trap: Why Middle-Class Mothers and Fathers Are Going Broke, written with her daughter, Amelia Tyagi. A NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLERAn unlikely political star tells the inspiring story of the two-decade journey that taught her how Washington really works-and really doesnt. As a child in small-town Oklahoma, Elizabeth Warren yearned to go to college and then become an elementary school teacher-an ambitious goal, given her familys modest means. Early marriage and motherhood seemed to put even that dream out of reach, but fifteen years later she was a distinguished law professor with a deep understanding of why people go bankrupt. Then came the phone call that changed her life: Could she come to Washington, D.C. to help advise Congress on rewriting the bankruptcy laws? Thus began an impolite education into the bare-knuckled, often dysfunctional ways of Washington. She fought for better bankruptcy laws for ten years and lost. She tried to hold the federal government accountable during the financial crisis but became a target of the big banks. She came up with the idea for a new agency designed to protect consumers from predatory bankers and was denied the opportunity to run it. Finally, at age 62, she decided to run for elective office and won the most competitive-and watched-Senate race in the country. In this passionate, funny, rabble-rousing book, Warren shows why she has chosen to fight tooth and nail for the middle class-and why she has become a hero to all those who believe that Americas government can and must do better for working families. Review A potent mix of memoir and policy...The title of this book reminds us that this is about Warrens fight. She is still the fiery advocate who called for a bureau to protect consumers or, as a second choice, no agency at all and plenty of blood and teeth left on the floor. The New York Times Book ReviewMoving...Ultimately, the books message is that one person can make a difference....After reading this book, it is comforting to know that Elizabeth Warren, with her passion, anger and bluntness, will not be silenced. The Washington Post“[Warrens] storytelling is well-paced and engaging....She mixes policy points with rich behind-the-scenes anecdotes.” The Boston Globe“Intelligent and informative...[Warren is] good, plainspoken company who makes you feel smarter for having spent such easy time with her....Her new book, which is a loving look at her family as well as her country, will only broaden her base.” Entertainment Weekly“A revealing account of Warrens rise to prominence...[Warrens] arguments demand to be taken seriously....As a politician and activist, Warrens great strength is that she retains the outsiders perspective, and the outsiders sense of moral outrage, which runs throughout A Fighting Chance....Shes an indomitable battler for the underdog, and she doesnt take no for an answer.” The New York Review of Books“The Wall Street watchdog and U.S. senator has produced a readable and sometimes infuriating explanation of the biggest financial crisis of our time.” People“[Warren] has a compelling story to tell....She is also entertaining about professional politics.” The Economist“Warrens prose is as...direct as her books title. She has a good story to tell and she tells it well....Warrens accomplishments defied expectations virtually every step of the way.” The Christian Science Monitor“Passionate...Her vision [for the country], laid out elegantly and effectively in A Fighting Chance, involves investments by we the people, through our government, in schools, roads and research labs, and in a social safety net for the least among us, investments that are, at once, in our own self-inte...

James Rosen, The Wall Street JournalAs a young man, Jack Goldsmith revered his stepfather, longtime Jimmy Hoffa associate Chuckie O’Brien. But as he grew older and pursued a career in law and government, he came to doubt and distance himself from the man long suspected by the FBI of perpetrating Hoffa’s disappearance on behalf of the mob. It was only years later, when Goldsmith was serving as assistant attorney general in the George W. Bush administration and questioning its misuse of surveillance and other powers, that he began to reconsider his stepfather, and to understand Hoffa’s true legacy. In Hoffa’s Shadow tells the moving story of how Goldsmith reunited with the stepfather he’d disowned and then set out to unravel one of the twentieth century’s most persistent mysteries and Chuckie’s role in it. Along the way, Goldsmith explores Hoffa’s rise and fall and why the golden age of blue-collar America came to an end, while also casting new light on the century-old surveillance state, the architects of Hoffa’s disappearance, and the heartrending complexities of love and loyalty. He lives in Rhode Island with his wife and two children. From the bestselling author of The Prince of Providence, a revelatory biography of Rocky Marciano, the greatest heavyweight champion of all time. The son of poor Italian immigrants, with short arms and stubby legs, Rocky Marciano accomplished a feat that eluded legendary heavyweight champions like Joe Louis, Jack Dempsey, Muhammad Ali, and Mike Tyson: He never lost a professional fight. His record was a perfect 49-0.Unbeaten is the story of this remarkable champion who overcame injury, doubt, and the schemes of corrupt promoters to win the title in a bloody and epic battle with Jersey Joe Walcott in 1952. Rocky packed a devastating punch with an innocent nickname, “Suzie Q,” against which there was no defense. As the champ, he came to know presidents and movie stars - and the organized crime figures who dominated the sport, much to his growing disgust. He may have “stood out in boxing like a rose in a garbage dump,” as one sportswriter said, but he also fought his own private demons. In the hands of the award-winning journalist and biographer Mike Stanton, Unbeaten is more than just a boxing story. Williams, The New York Times Book Review), Coretta’s is a love story, a family saga, and the memoir of an extraordinary black woman in twentieth-century America a brave leader who, in the face of terrorism and violent hatred, stood committed, proud, forgiving, nonviolent, and hopeful every day of her life. Review “‘There is a Mrs. King. There is also Coretta. How one became detached from the other remains a mystery,’ King says. This book is distinctly Coretta’s story. . . particularly absorbing. . . .Living with terror is the threat that runs through ‘My Life’ . . . it is Kings grounding in her husbands theology of peaceful resistance that enables her survival against excruciating odds.” Patricia J. Williams, The New York Times Book Review “This memoir shows Coretta Scott King . . . as a leader in her own right, as a dedicated pacifist, as a persistent adherent to principles of nonviolence, as a gritty fighter for her husband’s legacy, as a mother . . . . A great and inspirational read . . . .This book put steel in my spine.” Julianne Malveaux, Pittsburgh Courier“Eloquent . . . inspirational . . . . King’s life’s work relayed in this rich retelling, provides a possible blueprint and a beacon.” USA Today “In [Coretta: My Life, My Love, My Legacy], legendary journalist Barbara Reynolds reveals never-before-told aspects of Mrs. King’s life . . . . We learn of the brilliant mind and courageous spirit behind the enigmatic figure.” Essence“The full life story of the civil rights activist and humanitarian is much more than just Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s wife. . . . A NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER about Christmases past and present from the #1 bestselling author of Running with Scissors, Dry, and A Wolf at the TableAt eight years old, Augusten Burroughs profoundly misunderstood the meaning of Christmas. Now proving himself once more a master of making tragedy funny (The Miami Herald), he shows how the holidays can bring out the worst in us and sometimes, just sometimes, the very best. From the author described in USA Today as one of the most compelling and screamingly funny voices of the new century comes a book about surviving the holiday we love to hate, and hate to love. Review “In his trademark wit and self-deprecating humor . . . Burroughs compiles his favorite Christmas memories. From gnawing the face off of a life-size wax Santa to waking up beside a naked real-life Saint Nick at the Waldorf Astoria, Burroughs spares no details describing why Christmas has always been his favorite holiday.” Vanity Fair“For those who like their holiday spirit with gallons of vodka and a heaping portion of irreverence, You Better Not Cry is at times a laugh-out-loud read. . . . Burroughs is as frank and revealing as ever. . . . Fans wont be disappointed.” San Francisco Chronicle“Burroughs succeeds best at evoking true holiday spirit, reminding us that whatevers left after the bulbs stop twinkling, the cookies are all eaten, and the trees lose their tinsel is whats most important.” Elle“Terribly funny, in his tragically honest style . . . You may not cry, but youll definitely laugh.” The Miami Herald Excerpt. © Reprinted by permission. All rights reserved. It’s not that I was an outright nitwit of a child. It’s that the things even a nitwit could do with little or no instruction often confused me. Simple, everyday sorts of things tripped me up. Stacking metal chairs, for example. Everybody in class just seemed to know exactly how to fold the seat up into the back and then nest them all together like Pringles potato chips. I sat on the floor for ten minutes with one of the things as if somebody had told me to just stare at it. Concentrate hard, Augusten, try and turn it into an eggplant with your mind. You can do it! The other children appeared to be born with some sort of innate knowledge, as though the action of folding and stacking child-size metal school chairs was gene tically encoded within each of them, like fingernails or a sigmoid colon. I seemed to lack the ability to comprehend the obvious. From the very beginning there had been warning signs.Like every kid just starting school, I had to memorize the Pledge of Allegiance-something that would in many towns today be considered prayer and therefore forbidden; akin to forcing a child to drink the blood of a sacrificial goat or unfurl a Tabriz prayer rug and kneel barefoot on it while facing Mecca. While I managed to learn the words, memorizing isn’t the same as understanding. And of course I was never tested on the meaning of the pledge. It must have simply been taken for granted that even the dimmest child would easily grasp the meaning of a phrase such as I pledge allegiance, especially when that phrase...

-Titulo Original : The Ministry Of Truth A Biography Of George Orwells 1984-Fabricante : Picador-Descripcion Original: The best book I have read in a long time C. J SansomGeorge Orwells last novel has become one of the iconic narratives of the modern world. Its ideas have become part of the language - from Big Brother to the Thought Police, Doublethink, and Newspeak - and seem ever more relevant in the era of fake news and alternative facts. The cultural influence of 1984 can be observed in some of the most notable creations of the past seventy years, from Margaret Atwoods The Handmaids Tale to Terry Gilliams Brazil, from Alan Moore and David Lloyd’s V for Vendetta to David Bowies Diamond Dogs - and from the launch of Apple Mac to the reality TV landmark, Big Brother. In this remarkable and original book. Dorian Lynskey investigates the influences that came together in the writing of 1984 from Orwells experiences in the Spanish Civil War and war-time London to his books roots in utopian and dystopian fiction. He explores the phenomenon that the novel became on publication and the changing ways in which it has been read over the decades since. 2019 marks the seventieth anniversary of the publication of what is arguably Orwell’s masterpiece, while the year 1984 itself is now as distant from us as it was from Orwell on publication day. The Ministry of Truth is a fascinating examination of one of the most significant works of modern English literature. It describes how history can inform fiction and how fiction can influence history...

-Titulo Original : War Doctor: Surgery On The Front Line-Fabricante : Picador-Descripcion Original: For more than twenty-five years, David Nott has taken unpaid leave from his job as a general and vascular surgeon with the NHS to volunteer in some of the world’s most dangerous war zones. From Sarajevo under siege in 1993, to clandestine hospitals in rebel-held eastern Aleppo, he has carried out life-saving operations and field surgery in the most challenging conditions, and with none of the resources of a major London teaching hospital. The conflicts he has worked in form a chronology of twenty-first-century combat: Afghanistan, Sierra Leone, Liberia, Darfur, Congo, Iraq, Yemen, Libya, Gaza and Syria. But he has also volunteered in areas blighted by natural disasters, such as the earthquakes in Haiti and Nepal. Driven both by compassion and passion, the desire to help others and the thrill of extreme personal danger, he is now widely acknowledged to be the most experienced trauma surgeon in the world. But as time went on, David Nott began to realize that flying into a catastrophe - whether war or natural disaster - was not enough. Doctors on the ground needed to learn how to treat the appalling injuries that war inflicts upon its victims. Since 2015, the foundation he set up with his wife, Elly, has disseminated the knowledge he has gained, training other doctors in the art of saving lives threatened by bombs and bullets.War Doctor is his extraordinary story...

Book : Desk 88 Eight Progressive Senators Who Changed...

-Titulo Original : Desk 88 Eight Progressive Senators Who Changed America-Fabricante : Picador-Descripcion Original: About the Author Sherrod Brown, Ohio’s senior U.S. senator, has dedicated his life in public service to fighting for what he calls “the dignity of work” the belief that hard work should pay off for everyone. He resides in Cleveland with his wife, Connie Schultz, a Pulitzer Prize-winning columnist and author. They are blessed with a growing family, including three daughters, a son, and seven grandchildren. Since his election to the U.S. Senate in 2006, Ohio’s Sherrod Brown has sat on the Senate floor at a mahogany desk with a proud history. In Desk 88, he tells the story of eight of the Senators who were there before him. Perhaps the most imaginative book to emerge from the Senate since Senator John F. Kennedy of Massachusetts produced Profiles in Courage. David M. Shribman, The Boston GlobeDespite their flaws and frequent setbacks, each made a decisive contribution to the creation of a more just America. They range from Hugo Black, who helped to lift millions of American workers out of poverty, to Robert F. Kennedy, whose eyes were opened by an undernourished Mississippi child and who then spent the rest of his life afflicting the comfortable. Brown revives forgotten figures such as Idaho’s Glen Taylor, a singing cowboy who taught himself economics and stood up to segregationists, and offers new insights into George McGovern, who fought to feed the poor around the world even amid personal and political calamities. He also writes about Herbert Lehman of New York, Al Gore Sr. of Tennessee, Theodore Francis Green of Rhode Island, and William Proxmire of Wisconsin. Together, these eight portraits in political courage tell a story about the triumphs and failures of the Progressive idea over the past century: in the 1930s and 1960s, and more intermittently since, politicians and the public have successfully fought against entrenched special interests and advanced the cause of economic or racial fairness. Today, these advances are in peril as employers shed their responsibilities to employees and communities, and a U.S. president gives cover to bigotry. But the Progressive idea is not dead. Recalling his own career, Brown dramatizes the hard work and high ideals required to renew the social contract and create a new era in which Americans of all backgrounds can know the “Dignity of Work.” Review Perhaps the most imaginative book to emerge from the Senate since Senator John F. Kennedy of Massachusetts produced Profiles in Courage. David M. Shribman, The Boston GlobeBrown’s elegant portraits of his desk 88 predecessors have marvelous historical value . . . What makes Desk 88 particularly engaging are anecdotes illuminating the heroes’ convictions and character . . . The book’s last chapter, detailing Brown’s view of what Democrats should stand for in the age of Trump, reads like a thoughtful first draft of the party platform. Douglas Brinkley, The Washington Post[A] delightful book . . . most revealing is Brown’s analysis of his 2018 reelection by seven points in a state Trump carried by eight . . . his ideology . . does not block his capacity for empathy. E.J. Dionne, The Washington PostHighly readable and engaging. [Browns] profiles of the eight Democratic senators are enlightening, even for the most famous . . . the unique value of [Browns] book is in his quintessential defense of liberal ideals. Darrel Rowland, The Columbus DispatchA timely history of 20th-century American progressivism . . . [Brown] offers a stout defense of such progressive policies as Social Security and Medicare. This thoughtful, entertaining book will appeal to liberals and students of congressional history. Publishers Weekly“Senator Sherrod Brown is a fearless force for progressive change whose strong voice and powerful vision have helped lift up hardworking families across America over decades. As American families confront the growing income disparity that is at the root of the crisis of conf...

He studied the piano at the Warsaw Conservatory and at the Academy of Arts in Berlin. From 1945 to 1963, he was Director of Music at Polish Radio, and he also pursued a career as a concert pianist and composer for many years. He died in Warsaw in 2000. The film version of his memoir, The Pianist, was the winner of the Palme dOr at the 2002 Cannes Film Festival. The 75th Anniversary Edition of the memoir that inspired Roman Polanskis Oscar-winning film, with a new introduction by Szpilmans son, AndrzejOn September 23, 1939, Wladyslaw Szpilman played Chopins Nocturne in C-sharp minor live on the radio as shells exploded outside so loudly that he couldnt hear his piano. It was the last live music broadcast from Warsaw: That day, a German bomb hit the station, and Polish Radio went off the air.Though he lost his entire family, Szpilman survived in hiding. In the end, his life was saved by a German officer who heard him play the same Chopin Nocturne on a piano found among the rubble. Written immediately after the war and suppressed for decades, The Pianist is a stunning testament to human endurance and the redemptive power of fellow feeling. Review “Stunning...Filled with unforgettable incidents, images, and people.” The Wall Street Journal“Remarkable...A document of lasting historical and human value.” Los Angeles Times“Historically indispensable.” The Washington Post“The Pianist is a great book.” The Boston Globe“Even by the standards set by Holocaust memoirs, this book is a stunner.” Seattle Weekly“A stunning tribute to what one human being can endure, The Pianist is even more a testimony to the redemptive power of fellow feeling.” The Plain Dealer“[The Pianist] joins the ranks of Holocaust memoirs notable as much for their literary value as for their historical significance...Szpilman is a remarkably lucid observer and chronicler.” Publishers Weekly (starred review)“A striking Holocaust memoir that conveys with exceptional immediacy and cool reportage the author’s desperate fight for survival. This is also a book about the power of music, which provides Szpilman the determination to go on.” Kirkus Reviews (starred review)“A richly detailed and absorbing work...fascinating for its detail...illuminating and astonishing.” Rain Taxi“The Pianist is a book so fresh and vivid, so heartbreaking, and so simply and beautifully written, that it manages to tell us the story of horrendous events as if for the first time...an altogether unforgettable book.” The Daily Telegraph (UK)“Wladyslaw Szpilman’s memoir of life in Nazi-occupied Warsaw and the Jewish ghetto has a singular vividness. All is conveyed with an understated intimacy and dailiness that render them painfully close.” The Observer (UK)“It is all told with a simple clarity that lodges the story in one’s stomach through a mixture of disgust, terror, despair, rage, and guilt that grips the reader almost gently.” The Spectator (UK)“Illuminates vividly the horror that overcame the Polish people. Szpilman’s account has an immediacy, vivid and anguished.” The Sunday Telegraph (UK)“Even if you saw the 2003 film about a Jewish pianist who survived the Nazi occupation of Warsaw, the immediacy of this autobiographical account by the musician himself is absolutely gripping. Unlike the majority of Holocaust survivors, who allowed themselves time to take stock, absorb and even come to terms with the past, Szpilman didn’t wait. His book was published in 1946, when his grief and his physical and mental suffering were still raw.” Sue Arnold, The Guardian (UK...
