Book : That First Season How Vince Lombardi Took The Worst..

-Titulo Original : That First Season How Vince Lombardi Took The Worst Team In The Nfl And Set It On The Path To Glory-Fabricante : Mariner Books-Descripcion Original: The story of a team, a town, and a leader: Vince Lombardi’s first year as head coach of the Green Bay Packers, and how he turned them into a powerhouse. The once-vaunted Green Bay Packers were a laughingstock by the late 1950s. They hadn’t fielded a winning team in more than a decade, and were close to losing their franchise to another city. They were in desperate need of a savior-and he arrived in a wood-paneled station wagon in the dead of winter from New York City. In a single year, Vince Lombardi-the grizzled coach who took no bull-transformed a team of underachievers into winners and resurrected a Wisconsin city known for its passion for sports. He would lead them to championship to championship, and bring out the best in players including Bart Starr, Jim Taylor, Willie Davis, Forrest Gregg, and many more. From an award-winning sportswriter, That First Season is “a compelling read about perhaps the most compelling coach ever to stride an NFL sideline” ( Washington Times). “Richly detailed in seamless prose, this is historical sportswriting at its finest.-Lars Anderson, New York Times best-selling author of The Mannings: The Fall and Rise of a Football Family Review A brisk, sometimes revealing look at Lombardis early days in Green Bay and is a nice complement to the existing works on the legendary coach. -- Publishers Weekly The exciting chronicle of Vince Lombardi’s pivotal first season as head coach of the Green Bay Packers... How the stout, brash Brooklyn native was able to transform a directionless assemblage of players into a gridiron behemoth is as much the subject of Eisenberg’s exhaustively researched account as his thrilling description of each game... A must-read for Packer and Lombardi fans, and will interest most NFL fans as well. -- Kirkus Reviews A worthy and informative account. -- Milwaukee Journal Sentinel Incisive. -- Washington Times Engrossing . . . Provides a thrilling look at the coach and players who legends shine brightly in Titletown even decades later. -- Associated Press A breezy and likable look at [Lombardi]. -- Bloomberg A compelling read about perhaps the most compelling coach ever to stride an NFL sideline. This one is a keeper for anyone who remembers St. Vincent or wonders how he did so much so quickly. -- Washington Times From the Inside Flap On the 50th anniversary of Vince Lombardis first season in Green Bay, an irresistible and little-known comeback story In the late 1950s the once vaunted Green Bay Packers were a laughing stock. They hadnt fielded a winning team in more than a decade and were very nearly in jeopardy of losing their franchise to another city. The ultimate low came in 1958, when, with 7 future Hall of Famers on the team, they went a lousy 1-10-1 under a too-soft coach, Scooter McLean. They were desperately in need of a savior, and he arrived via wood-paneled station wagon in the dead of winter from New York City. THAT FIRST SEASON chronicles Vince Lombardis remarkable first year as head coach with the franchise he would reinvent and etch forever in football history. In a single year, as the grizzled coach who took no bull, he would transform a team of underachievers into winners and reignite a city known for its passion for its sport. Based on exhaustive new research and interviews, THAT FIRST SEASON is the seldom-studied prequel to a football career marked by greatness. Eisenberg pushes away the mist that surrounds the Lombardi legend to bring readers the real story of how the seeds of a football dynasty were sown. He also brings alive an incredible ensemble tale of a team, a town and their leader. From the Back Cover On the 50th anniversary of Vince Lombardis first season in Green Bay, an irresistible and little-known comeback story In the late 1950s the once vaunted Green Bay Packers were a laughing stock. -Titulo Original : The Seven Sins Of Memory How The Mind Forgets And Remembers-Fabricante : Mariner Books-Descripcion Original: A groundbreaking work by one of the worlds foremost psychologists that delves into the complex behavior of memory. In this fascinating study, Daniel L. Schacter explores instances of what we would consider memory failure-absent-mindedness, transience, blocking, misattribution, suggestibility, bias, and persistence-and suggests instead that these miscues are actually indications that memory is functioning as designed. Drawing from vivid scientific research and creative literature, as well as high-profile events in which memory has figured significantly (Bill Clintons grand jury testimony, for instance), The Seven Sins of Memory provides a more nuanced understanding of how memory and the mind influence each other and shape our lives. About the Author DANIEL L. SCHACTER is the William R. Kenan, Jr. Professor of Psychology in the Psychology Department of Harvard University. He has been elected to the National Academy of Sciences and received numerous awards for his research, including the Award for Distinguished Scientific Contributions to Psychology from the American Psychological Association and the Fred Kavli Distinguished Career Contributions Award from the Cognitive Neuroscience Society. He is the author of many books on memory and neuropsychology, including Searching for Memory, which received praise as a New York Times Notable Book of the Year and which won the American Psychological Associations William James Book Award, as did The Sevens Sins of Memory. Book : Connectome How The Brains Wiring Makes Us Who We Are.

-Titulo Original : Connectome How The Brains Wiring Makes Us Who We Are-Fabricante : Mariner Books-Descripcion Original: The audacious effort to map the brain-and along with it our personalities and mental afflictions, from autism to schizophrenia-by a star in neuroscience. Every person is unique, but science has struggled to pinpoint where, precisely, that uniqueness resides. Our genome may determine our eye color and even aspects of our character. But our friendships, failures, and passions also shape who we are. The question is: how? Sebastian Seung is at the forefront of a revolution in neuroscience. He believes that our identity lies not in our genes, but in the connections between our brain cells-our particular wiring. Seung and a dedicated group of researchers are leading the effort to map these connections, neuron by neuron, synapse by synapse. It’s a monumental effort, but if they succeed, they will uncover the basis of personality, identity, intelligence, memory, and perhaps disorders such as autism and schizophrenia. Connectome is a mind-bending adventure story that presents a daring scientific and technological vision for understanding what makes us who we are, both as individuals and as a species. “This is complicated stuff, and it is a testament to Dr. Seung’s remarkable clarity of exposition that the reader is swept along with his enthusiasm...sketching out a spectacularly illustrated giant map of the universe of man.”-Abigail Zuger, MD, New York Times “Accessible, witty, imminently logical and at times poetic, Connectome...puts him on par with cosmology’s Brian Greene and the late Carl Sagan.”- Cleveland Plain Dealer Review Wall Street Journals 10 Best Nonfiction Books of 2012 Amazons Top 100 Editors Picks for 2012 Publishers Weekly Top Ten in Science for Spring 2012 “ The best lay book on brain science I’ve ever read.” - Wall Street Journal by Daniel Levitin, Professor, McGill University; author of This Is Your Brain on Music and The World in Six Songs. “?This is complicated stuff, and it is a testament to Dr. Seung’s remarkable clarity of exposition that the reader is swept along with his enthusiasm, as he moves from the basics of neuroscience out to the farthest regions of the hypothetical, sketching out a spectacularly illustrated giant map of the universe of man.” - New York Times “[A] bracing, mind-expanding report from neuroscience’s razor edge. Accessible, witty, [e]minently logical and at times poetic, Connectome establishes Seung as an important new researcher, philosopher and popularizer of brain science. It puts him on par with cosmology’s Brian Greene and the late Carl Sagan.” - Cleveland Plain Dealer “Seung argues intelligently and powerfully that the self lies in the totality of the brain’s wiring.” - Nature by Christof Koch, Professor, California Institute of Technology; Chief Scientific Officer, Allen Institute for Brain Science; author of Quest for Consciousness and Consciousness: Confessions of a Romantic Reductionist “With the first-person flavour of James Watson’s Double Helix-an account of how DNA’s structure was discovered-Connectome gives a sense of the excitement on the cutting edge of neuroscience.” - NewScientist by Terry Sejnowski, Professor and Director, Computational Neurobiology Lab, Salk Institute; Investigator, Howard Hughes Medical Institute; Member, National Academy of Sciences and National Academy of Engineering USA. “An elegant primer on what’s known about how the brain is organized and how it grows, wires its neurons, perceives its environment, modifies or repairs itself, and stores information. Book : Demonic Males Apes And The Origins Of Human Violence.

-Titulo Original : Demonic Males Apes And The Origins Of Human Violence-Fabricante : Mariner Books-Descripcion Original: Whatever their virtues, men are more violent than women. Why do men kill, rape, and wage war, and what can we do about it? Demonic Males offers startling new answers to these questions. Drawing on the latest discoveries about human evolution and about our closest living relatives, the great apes, the book unfolds a compelling argument that the secrets of a peaceful society may well be, first, a sharing of power between males and females, and second, a high level and variety of sexual activity, both homosexual and heterosexual. Dramatic, vivid, and sometimes shocking, but firmly grounded in meticulous scientific research, Demonic Males will stir controversy and debate. It will be required reading for anyone concerned about the spiral of violence undermining human society. Review The heroes of this fascinating account of primate behavior and evolution are bonobos, members of a species closely related to both humans and chimpanzees but distinguished by its comparatively nonviolent and relatively egalitarian social structure. Wrangham and Peterson look to studies of bonobo social organization and behavior for insight into social mechanisms to control human violence. The influence of sociobiology is evident at every step in the authors (which the authors dub Galtons error). The book is an accessible, gripping, sometimes surprising account of the depth and extent of violent behavior among primates as well as a provocative discussion of its origins and possible remedies. Booklist, ALA About the Author Dale Peterson is the coauthor with Jane Goodall of Visions of Caliban (a New York Times Notable Book and a Library Journal Best Book) and the editor of her two books of letters, Africa in My Blood and Beyond Innocence. Book : This Is Your Brain On Parasites How Tiny Creatures...

-Titulo Original : This Is Your Brain On Parasites How Tiny Creatures Manipulate Our Behavior And Shape Society-Fabricante : Mariner Books-Descripcion Original: “Engrossing … [An] expedition through the hidden and sometimes horrifying microbial domain.” -Wall Street Journal “Fascinating-and full of the kind of factoids you cant wait to share.” -Scientific American Parasites can live only inside another animal and, as Kathleen McAuliffe reveals, these tiny organisms have many evolutionary motives for manipulating the behavior of their hosts. With astonishing precision, parasites can coax rats to approach cats, spiders to transform the patterns of their webs, and fish to draw the attention of birds that then swoop down to feast on them. We humans are hardly immune to their influence. Organisms we pick up from our own pets are strongly suspected of changing our personality traits and contributing to recklessness and impulsivity-even suicide. Germs that cause colds and the flu may alter our behavior even before symptoms become apparent. Parasites influence our species on the cultural level, too. Drawing on a huge body of research, McAuliffe argues that our dread of contamination is an evolved defense against parasites. The horror and revulsion we are programmed to feel when we come in contact with people who appear diseased or dirty helped pave the way for civilization, but may also be the basis for major divisions in societies that persist to this day. This Is Your Brain on Parasites is both a journey into cutting-edge science and a revelatory examination of what it means to be human. “If you’ve ever doubted the power of microbes to shape society and offer us a grander view of life, read on and find yourself duly impressed.” -Heather Havrilesky, Bookforum Review If youve ever doubted the power of microbes to shape society and offer us a grander view of life, read on and find yourself duly impressed.- BookForum “A fascinating account of an extraordinary suite of biological phenomena, only recently come to light and proving that given enough time and enough evolving species to work with, natural selection can accomplish almost anything.” - Edward O. Wilson, Professor Emeritus, Harvard University, author of Consilience. “This book has all the elements of a crime thriller: violence, blood, gore, race and sex. But here the criminals are parasites. McAuliffe tells a vivid and sometimes horrifying tale of the hijackers that control our brains and our behaviour. In company with the best science writers, she shows us that reality can be way more interesting than fiction.” - Valerie Curtis, Director of the Environmental Health Group of the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine and author of Don’t Look, Don’t Touch, Don’t Eat “Be prepared to throw away all your preconceptions about the order of life. Humorous, inspiring and macabre-this is infectious reading in the tradition of giants like Robert S. Desowitz and Jared Diamond.” - Michael A Huffman, associate professor, Primate Research Institute, Kyoto University From start to finish, [McAuliffe] spins a consistently engrossing tale of invasive creatures that can alter your behavior and outlook, depress your cognitive functioning, and even make you more violent or sexually aggressive. -- Heather Havrilesky, Book Forum About the Author KATHLEEN MCAULIFFE is a contributing editor to Discover. Her work has appeared in over a dozen national magazines, including Discover, the New York Times Magazine, Atlantic, and Smithsonian. From 1999 to 2006, she was also a health columnist for More. Book : The Things They Carried - O'Brien, Tim

-Titulo Original : The Things They Carried-Fabricante : Mariner Books-Descripcion Original: A classic, life-changing meditation on war, memory, imagination, and the redemptive power of storytelling, with more than two-million copies in print Depicting the men of Alpha Company-Jimmy Cross, Henry Dobbins, Rat Kiley, Mitchell Sanders, Norman Bowker, Kiowa, and the character Tim O’Brien, who survived his tour in Vietnam to become a father and writer at the age of forty-three-the stories in The Things They Carried opened our eyes to the nature of war in a way we will never forget. It is taught everywhere, from high school classrooms to graduate seminars in creative writing, and in the decades since its publication it has never failed to challenge our perceptions of fact and fiction, war and peace, and courage, longing, and fear. Review “The best of these stories-and none is written with less than the sharp edge of honed vision-are memory and prophecy. These tell us not where we were but where we are, and perhaps where we will be. . . . It is an ultimate, indelible image of war in our time, and in time to come.” -Los Angeles Times “In prose that combines the sharp, unsentimental rhythms of Hemingway with gentler, more lyrical descriptions, Mr. OBrien gives the reader a shockingly visceral sense of what it felt like to tramp through a booby-trapped jungle, carrying 20 pounds of supplies, 14 pounds of ammunition, along with radios, machine guns, assault rifles and grenades. . . . With The Things They Carried, Mr. OBrien has written a vital, important book-a book that matters not only to the reader interested in Vietnam, but to anyone interested in the craft of writing as well.” -Michiko Kakutani, New York Times “Belongs high on the list of best fiction about any war . . . crystallizes the Vietnam experience for everyone [and] exposes the nature of all war stories.” -New York Times, “Books of the Century” “With The Things They Carried, Tim OBrien adds his second title to the short list of essential fiction about Vietnam. . . . [H]e captures the wars pulsating rhythms and nerve-racking dangers. But he goes much further. By moving beyond the horror of the fighting to examine with sensitivity and insight the nature of courage and fear, by questioning the role that imagination plays in helping to form our memories and our own versions of truth, he places The Things They Carried high up on the list of best fiction about any war.” -New York Times Book Review “When Going After Cacciato appeared out of nowhere to win the 1979 National Book Award, it seemed to many, myself included, that no finer fiction had, as of then, been written in the closing half of the 20th century-or was likely to be in the remaining years to come. The Things They Carried disposes of that prediction . . . Tim OBrien is the best American writer of his generation.” -San Francisco Examiner “The integrity of a novel and the immediacy of an autobiography . . . O’Brien’s absorbing narrative moves in circles; events are recalled and retold again and again, giving us a deep sense of the fluidity of truth and the dance of memory.” -The New Yorker “Rendered with an evocative, quiet precision, not equaled in the imaginative literature of the American war in Vietnam. It is as though a Thucydides had descended from grand politique and strategy to calm dissection of the quotidian efforts of war. . . . OBrien has it just right.” -Washington Post “Powerful . . . Composed in the same lean, vigorous style as his earlier books, The Things They Carried adds up to a captivating account of the experiences of an infantry company in Vietnam. . . . Evocative and haunting, the raw force of confession.” -Wall Street Journal “OBrien has written a book so searing and immediate you can almost hear the choppers in the background. Drenched in irony and purple-haze napalm, the Vietnam narrative has almost been forced to produce a new kind of war literature. Book : The Dark Monk (us Edition) (a Hangmans Daughter Tale)

-Titulo Original : The Dark Monk (us Edition) (a Hangmans Daughter Tale)-Fabricante : Mariner Books-Descripcion Original: BOOK 2 OF THE INTERNATIONAL BEST SELLING HANGMAN’S DAUGHTER SERIES 1660: Winter has settled thick over a sleepy village in the Bavarian Alps, ensuring every farmer and servant is indoors on the night a parish priest discovers hes been poisoned. As numbness creeps up his body, he summons the last of his strength to scratch a cryptic sign in the frost. Following a trail of riddles, hangman Jakob Kuisl, his headstrong daughter, Magdalena, and the town physician’s son team up with the priest’s aristocratic sister to investigate. What they uncover will lead them back to the Crusades, unlocking a troubled history of internal church politics and sending them on a chase for a treasure of the Knights Templar. But they’re not the only ones after the legendary fortune. A team of dangerous and mysterious monks is always close behind, tracking their every move, speaking Latin in the shadows, giving off a strange, intoxicating scent. And to throw the hangman off their trail, they have ensured he is tasked with capturing a band of thieves roving the countryside attacking solitary travellers and spreading panic. Delivering on the promise of the international bestseller The Hangman’s Daughter, Oliver Potzsch takes us on a whirlwind tour through the occult hiding places of Bavaria’s ancient monasteries. Once again based on prodigious historical research into Potzsch’s family tree, The Dark Monk brings to life an unforgettable, compassionate hangman and his tenacious daughter, painting a robust tableau of a seventeenth-century Bavaria and quickening our pulses with a gripping, mesmerizing mystery. From Publishers Weekly The brutality and ignorance of 17th-century Bavaria serves as the backdrop for Potzschs thrilling second whodunit featuring an unlikely trio of sleuths (after 2011s The Hangmans Daughter). When the parish priest, Andreas Koppmeyer, eats some poisoned doughnuts after sealing up a mysterious something in his church basement, he manages to scratch a mark on the frost covering a gravestone as he expires. Figuring out what that dying clue means and who doctored the pastries falls to Altenstadt hangman Jakob Kuisl; his daughter, Magdalena, an apprentice midwife; and her suitor, Simon Fronwieser, a doctors son. Fronwieser links a Latin phrase seen in a crypt with the Templars, raising the possibility that Koppmeyer stumbled on a secret relating to that shadowy society. Meanwhile, the depredations of a gang of robbers threaten local commerce. Fans of Michael Gregorios early 19th-century Prussian series ( Unholy Awakening, etc.) will find a lot to enjoy. From Booklist Originally published in Germany in 2009, this sequel to The Hangman’s Daughter begins in January 1660 with the murder of a priest and takes readers on a wild adventure to uncover the secret of a long-hidden (and possibly mythical) treasure of the Knights Templar. Potzsch does an excellent job of plunking the reader down in seventeenth-century Germany; Jakob Kuisl, the town hangman, and his daughter, Magdalena, don’t seem like made-up characters in a fictional landscape but, rather, like real people in a real place (in fact, the Kuisl family of executioners actually existed, and Potzsch is descended from them). The author supplies enough historical detail to give readers a good sense of the time and place but not too much to risk boring them with unnecessary details. Readers will also appreciate the nice balance between drama, suspense, and humor: this is a serious story, Potzsch seems to be saying, but its OK to have some fun with it. At least two more books in the series are forthcoming, and they will be most welcome. Review Advance Praise for The Dark Monk Swift and sure, compelling as any conspiracy theory, persuasive as any spasm of paranoia, The Dark Monk grips you at the base of your skull and doesnt let go.-Gregory Maguire, author of Wicked and Out of Oz Oliver Potzsch takes readers on a da...

Book : The Crossing Places (ruth Galloway Mysteries) (ruth..

-Titulo Original : The Crossing Places (ruth Galloway Mysteries) (ruth Galloway Mysteries, 1)-Fabricante : Mariner Books-Descripcion Original: The first entry in the acclaimed Ruth Galloway series follows the captivating* archaeologist as she investigates a childs bones found on a nearby beach, thought to be the remains of a little girl who went missing ten years before.Forensic archeologist Dr. Ruth Galloway is in her late thirties. She lives happily alone with her two cats in a bleak, remote area near Norfolk, land that was sacred to its Iron Age inhabitants-not quite earth, not quite sea. But her routine days of digging up bones and other ancient objects are harshly upended when a child’s bones are found on a desolate beach. Detective Chief Inspector Nelson calls Galloway for help, believing they are the remains of Lucy Downey, a little girl who went missing a decade ago and whose abductor continues to taunt him with bizarre letters containing references to ritual sacrifice, Shakespeare, and the Bible. Then a second girl goes missing and Nelson receives a new letter-exactly like the ones about Lucy. Is it the same killer? Or a copycat murderer, linked in some way to the site near Ruth’s remote home? *Louise Penny Review The Saltmarsh, a mystical place, provides the stunning backdrop for a new mystery series.Ruth Galloway is an overweight 40-ish forensic archaeologist living happily and quietly with her two cats in a Saltmarsh cottage when DCI Harry Nelson calls on her to establish the age of some bones found on a lonely beach. Nelson has never given up the search for Lucy Downey, taken from her parents’ home 10 years ago and presumed dead. But these bones, to Ruth’s delight, are those of an Iron Age child ritually buried. Despite their disparate backgrounds, the tough cop is sufficiently impressed by Ruth’s calm professionalism to show her a series of taunting letters he’s received over the years, presumably from the killer. She’s struck by the use of biblical and literary quotations and some arcane archaeological knowledge. The Iron Age find brings interest from both the university where Ruth teaches and her former mentor Erik Anderssen. The dig they worked together at the Saltmarsh now provides a shoal of suspects for Nelson. Reputed magician Cathbad, Ruth’s former lover Peter, her friend Shona and Erik were all around at the time. When one of Ruth’s cats is killed and left on her doorstep and another child goes missing, she’s sucked even deeper into the challenging and terrifying hunt for the truth.A winning debut. Aficionados may guess the killer early on, but the first-rate characters and chilling story are entrancing from start to finish. - Kirkus Reviews Issue: November 15, 2009 The Crossing Places. Griffiths, Elly (Author) Jan 2010. 304 p. Houghton, hardcover, $25.00. (9780547229898). Nearing 40 and overweight, forensic anthropologist Ruth Galloway is content with her life, teaching at the University of North Norfolk and living in a cottage on remote Saltmarsh with her two cats. When DCI Harry Nelson enlists her help in identifying the bones of a child unearthed in the marsh, he anticipates closing the case of five-year-old Lucy Downey, snatched from her bed 10 years earlier. But Ruth confirms that the bones date from the Iron Age, an exciting find that recalls memories of a dig led by her mentor, Erik, at which she met her former lover, Peter. Impressed with Ruth, Nelson shares his file on the missing child and calls on her when another little girl goes missing, putting Ruth herself at risk. Griffiths combines elements of archaeology, mythology, and even ornithology with the foreboding mood of the marsh. -Titulo Original : The Night Hawks (ruth Galloway Mysteries)-Fabricante : Mariner Books-Descripcion Original: A USA Today Bestseller There’s nothing Ruth Galloway hates more than amateur archaeologists, but when a group of them stumble upon Bronze Age artifacts alongside a dead body, she finds herself thrust into their midst-and into the crosshairs of a string of murders circling ever closer. Ruth is back as head of archaeology at the University of North Norfolk when a group of local metal detectorists-the so-called Night Hawks-uncovers Bronze Age artifacts on the beach, alongside a recently deceased body, just washed ashore. Not long after, the same detectorists uncover a murder-suicide-a scientist and his wife found at their farmhouse, long thought to be haunted by the Black Shuck, a humongous black dog, a harbinger of death. The further DCI Nelson probes into both cases, the more intertwined they become, and the closer they circle to David Brown, the new lecturer Ruth has recently hired, who seems always to turn up wherever Ruth goes. The science fiction of AI and robotics has finally come true, but millions are angry and fearful that the future has left them behind. After narrowly stopping a bombing at Washington’s Union Station, FBI Special Agent Lara Keegan receives a new assignment: to field-test an advanced police robot. As a series of shocking catastrophes unfolds, the two find themselves investigating a conspiracy whose mastermind is using cutting-edge tech to rip the nation apart. To stop this new breed of terrorist, their only hope is to forge a new type of partnership. Burn-In is especially chilling because it is something more than a pulse-pounding read: every tech, trend, and scene is drawn from real world research on the ways that our politics, our economy, and even our family lives will soon be transformed. Blending a techno-thriller’s excitement with nonfiction’s insight, Singer and Cole illuminate the darkest corners of the world soon to come. Review “ Burn-In is a fantastic, compelling, and authoritative look into the future-a future that is equal parts amazing and terrifying. With Burn-In, Peter Singer and August Cole establish themselves both as masters of the techno-thriller and as scientifically grounded futurists. Woven into their riveting, page-turning tale of a brilliant FBI agent’s future hunt for a diabolically clever, tech-savvy criminal are important lessons about the extremely difficult issues that lie ahead surrounding the use of AI, robotics, augmented reality, and ubiquitous surveillance. It is a terrific read!” -General David Petraeus (USA, Ret.), former commander of the Surge in Iraq, US Central Command, and coalition forces in Afghanistan and former director of the CIA “Whether it’s a Jack Reacher novel or John Le Carre spy drama, my litmus test of how good a book is, is the time to read. If you, like me, enjoy fast-paced, well-researched, tech-adventure stories, you are going to devour Burn-In.” -Forbes “ Burn-In will do more for defense experts’ understanding of this brave new world with literature than a thousand nonfiction assessments would have.” -War on The Rocks “For think-tankers and military and civilian officials, Burn-In offers a buffet of challenging questions and troubling future quandaries; for those who seek a good story, it has it all: robot sidekicks, bearded military veterans gone rogue, and a technological showdown of biblical proportions set in the nation’s capital.” -Military “The book, like the other noteworthy novel the two collaborated on, Ghost Fleet , meets its purpose skillfully. It is both lively, entertaining, and well-written as well as thought-provoking . . . [It] should be essential reading for anyone who looks out at the landscape today and sees clouds looming over the horizon.” -CIMSEC “[As] timely and compelling as it is entertaining, Burn-In raises important issues and will provoke the necessary conversations that must happen about humanity and the future we want as we embrace technology at an ever-accelerating pace.” -The Cipher Brief “It’s a story of human-machine teaming, but like a buddy cop movie . . . Book : The Crossing Places (ruth Galloway Mysteries) -...

-Titulo Original : The Crossing Places (ruth Galloway Mysteries)-Fabricante : Mariner Books-Descripcion Original: An atmospheric adventure with beloved forensic archaeologist and “captivating amateur sleuth” Ruth Galloway, as she teams up with Detective Chief Inspector Harry Nelson to investigate a set of remains, thought to be the bones of a little girl who went missing ten years before-“an inspired creation” (Louise Penny). Forensic archeologist Ruth Galloway is in her late thirties. She lives happily alone with her cats in a remote area near Norfolk, land that was sacred to its Iron Age inhabitants-not quite earth, not quite sea. But her routine is harshly upended when a child’s bones are found on a desolate beach. Detective Chief Inspector Nelson calls Ruth for help, believing the bones to be the remains of Lucy Downey, a little girl who went missing a decade ago and whose abductor taunts him with bizarre letters referencing ritual sacrifice, Shakespeare, and the Bible. Then a second girl goes missing and Nelson receives a new letter-exactly like the ones about Lucy. Is it the same killer? Or a copycat murderer, linked in some way to the site near Ruth’s remote home? Review The Saltmarsh, a mystical place, provides the stunning backdrop for a new mystery series.Ruth Galloway is an overweight 40-ish forensic archaeologist living happily and quietly with her two cats in a Saltmarsh cottage when DCI Harry Nelson calls on her to establish the age of some bones found on a lonely beach. The result is an atmospheric mystery with a pulse-pounding climax and starring an oh-so-human protagonist who deals with life realistically. A knockout start for a series that should have broad appeal across the crime genre, from thriller fans to lovers of slightly edgy cozies. - Michele Leber (Booklist) Dr. Ruth Galloway lives on the remote English beach of Saltmarsh and teaches archeology at a small local university. When archaeologist Angelo Morelli asks Ruth Galloway to come to the Italian countryside to help identify bones found in picturesque Fontana Liri, she jumps at the chance to go and brings her daughter along for what she assumes will be a working vacation. Upon arriving, Ruth hears murmurs of Fontana Liri’s strong resistance movement during World War II, and begins to sense that the townspeople are harboring an age-old secret. But how, if at all, could this chapter in history be connected to the human remains that Angelo has unearthed? The Nazi regime preached an ideology of physical, mental, and moral purity. Yet as Norman Ohler reveals in this gripping history, the Third Reich was saturated with drugs: cocaine, opiates, and, most of all, methamphetamines, which were consumed by everyone from factory workers to housewives to German soldiers. In fact, troops were encouraged, and in some cases ordered, to take rations of a form of crystal meth-the elevated energy and feelings of invincibility associated with the high even help to account for the breakneck invasion that sealed the fall of France in 1940, as well as other German military victories. Hitler himself became increasingly dependent on injections of a cocktail of drugs-ultimately including Eukodal, a cousin of heroin-administered by his personal doctor. Thoroughly researched and rivetingly readable, Blitzed throws light on a history that, until now, has remained in the shadows. “Delightfully nuts.”-The New Yorker Review National Bestseller New York Times Book Review Editors Choice “The strengths of Ohler’s account lie not only in the rich array of rare documents he mines and the archival images he reproduces to accompany the text, but also in his character studies… Ohler effectively captures Hitler’s pathetic dependence on his doctor and the bizarre intimacy of their bond…Blitzed makes for provocative reading.” -The New York Times Book Review “A revelatory work that considers Hitler’s career in a new light. ‘Blitzed: Drugs in the Third Reich’ is that rare sort of book whose remarkable insight focuses on a subject that’s been overlooked, even disregarded by historians.” -The San Francisco Chronicle “Blitzed is a fascinating read that provides a new facet to our understanding of the Third Reich.”-Buzzfeed “Its as breezy and darkly humorous as its title. Albright, former US Secretary of State“We’ve never needed [Yovanovitch’s] insights more than we do right now.” -- Ali Velshi, The Rachel Maddow Show“A superbly crafted and intimately revealing self-portrait of a true hero of American diplomacy.… Wherever her diplomatic missions took her, Yovanovitch epitomized foreign service office philosophy, hewing to the principle of representing American ideals and policies with dignity and integrity.” -- Booklist (starred review)“Yovanovitchs memoir is the right book at the right time as readers try to make sense of whats happening in Ukraine.” -- USA Today“Ambassador Yovanovitch’s dismissal from post in Kyiv marked a cruel end to the illustrious career of one of the most respected diplomats in the U.S. Foreign Service. It also helped spark a chain of events that led to Donald Trump’s first impeachment. This memoir, at turns moving and gripping and always inspiring, is a powerful testament to a uniquely American life well-lived and a remarkable career of dedicated public service at the highest levels of government.” -- Fiona Hill, Senior Fellow, the Brookings Institution, and New York Times best-selling author of There Is Nothing for You Here: Finding Opportunity in the Twenty-First Century“Timely and telling, as well as a fine story of a life in national service.” -- The Guardian“Captivating… a compelling memoir of diplomatic service behind the old Iron Curtain.” -- Kirkus Reviews“First through the breach, Ambassador Yovanovitch showed Americans what courage and patriotism looks like. More than essential reading, Lessons from the Edge is thoroughly engaging and impossible to put down, showing us how an introverted career diplomat overcame the most vicious of smear campaigns to become a foreign service legend.” -- Congressman Adam Schiff INSTANT NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER | An inspiring and urgent memoir by the former U.S. ambassador to Ukraine-a pioneering diplomat who spent her career advancing democracy in the post-Soviet world, and who electrified the nation by speaking truth to power during the first impeachment of President Trump.Marie Yovanovitch was at the height of her diplomatic career when it all came crashing down. In the middle of her third ambassadorship-a rarity in the world of diplomacy-she was targeted by a smear campaign and abruptly recalled from her post in Kyiv, Ukraine. In the months that followed, she endured personal tragedy while simultaneously being pulled into the blinding lights of the first impeachment inquiry of Donald Trump. It was a time of chaos and pain, for her and for the nation.Yet Yovanovitch was no stranger to instability and injustice. Born into a family that had survived Soviet and Nazi terror, she first saw the corrosive effect of corruption in Somalia while cutting her teeth as a diplomat in the male-dominated world of the 1980s State Department. She was an eyewitness to the 1993 cons...

-Titulo Original : Coach K The Rise And Reign Of Mike Krzyzewski-Fabricante : Mariner Books-Descripcion Original: Review “The reporting and research are exhaustive and impressive. The writing is direct. The portrayal is fair, but unsparing. In many ways, Ian OConnors work is like Mike Krzyzewski himself: unrelenting, contemplative, purposeful. You not only learn about the coach and the man in this book, but more important, you understand him. No small feat.” -- --Gene Wojciechowski, ESPN’s College GameDay reporter and New York Times bestselling author of The Last Great Game I think Ian is one of the best writers in the country...and look at it as an honor that somebody of that level would write a book on me. -- --Mike Krzyzewski, Duke mens basketball coachNew York Post sports columnist O’Connor (Belichick) delivers a standout definitive biography of Mike Krzyzewski, who led the Duke Blue Devils to five NCAA titles during his decades-long tenure as coach.... The coach’s preternatural ability to motivate people to achieve things they did not believe they were capable of achieving is inspiring, as is the arc that O’Connor paints of his life as a low-income street kid who became the greatest college basketball coach of all time. Fans won’t want to miss this insightful look at a colossal figure in college sports. -- Publishers WeeklyBasketball fans might feel as though they already know Coach K - or Mike Krzyzewski, the decades-long coach of the Duke Blue Devils who’s set to retire after this season. Book : The First Kennedys The Humble Roots Of An American...

-Titulo Original : The First Kennedys The Humble Roots Of An American Dynasty-Fabricante : Mariner Books-Descripcion Original: Based on genealogical breakthroughs and previously unreleased records, this is the first book to explore the inspiring story of the poor Irish refugee couple who escaped famine, created a life together in a city hostile to Irish, immigrants, and Catholics, and launched the Kennedy dynasty in America.Their Irish ancestry was a hallmark of the Kennedys’ initial political profile, as JFK leveraged his working-class roots to connect with blue-collar voters. Today, we remember this iconic American family as the vanguard of wealth, power, and style rather than as the descendants of poor immigrants. Here at last, we meet the first American Kennedys, Patrick and Bridget, who arrived as many thousands of others did following the Great Famine-penniless and hungry. Less than a decade after their marriage in Boston, Patrick’s sudden death left Bridget to raise their children single-handedly. Her rise from housemaid to shop owner in the face of rampant poverty and discrimination kept her family intact, allowing her only son P.J. to become a successful saloon owner and businessman. P.J. went on to become the first American Kennedy elected to public office-the first of many. Written by the grandson of an Irish immigrant couple and based on first-ever access to P.J. Kennedy’s private papers, The First Kennedys is a story of sacrifice and survival, resistance and reinvention: an American story. Review An Amazon Best Book of February 2022: America’s fascination with the Kennedy family has been undimmed for over six decades now. The store of cold, hard facts about their lives and deaths have long ago been exhausted and have given way to reams of speculation. And then, just when it seems there are no fresh angles on Camelot, along comes Neal Thompson’s The First Kennedys. The first American Kennedys, that is: Patrick and Bridget Kennedy, driven-as over a million and a half Irish people were-by the Famine to seek refuge in a country that didn’t exactly put out the welcome mat. In penetrating prose studded with information and insight, Thompson vividly describes how, as a young widow, Bridget Kennedy went from maid to businesswoman, outmaneuvering relentless discrimination to steer her family out of the jaws of poverty. Through her story, Thompson shows us the seeds of one of the great American stories. -Vannessa Cronin, Amazon Editor Review “Here is that rare thing: an untold chapter in the Kennedy saga. Neal Thompson has given us a compelling and illuminating book about one of the most important families in our history-a family that represents so much about America then. And now.” -- Jon Meacham, Pulitzer Prize winner and #1 New York Times best-selling author of Thomas Jefferson: The Art of Power“Here is the chaos, claustrophobia, tragedy, and triumph of immigrant America told through one city and one iconic family. Just when you thought you knew everything there was to know about the Kennedys, along comes Neal Thompson with this brilliant re-creation of the Irish diaspora succeeding in a city that for many years would not allow them to be part of the American story. It’s great storytelling.” -- Timothy Egan, Pulitzer Prize winner and New York Times best-selling author of The Immortal Irishman“To understand the unforgettable stories of Jack and Bobby, Eunice, Ted, and the rest of their celebrated generation of Kennedys, we have to understand the stories of their extraordinary great-grandparents and grandparents. Now, thanks to Neal Thompson, we can. Read all about it in The First Kennedys.” -- Larry Tye, author of Bobby Kennedy: The Making of a Liberal Icon“A fresh, engrossing, and profoundly relatable look at a family that everyone thinks they know. Crafting a saga elevated by dogged research and transporting prose, Neal Thompson casts the humble beginnings of an American dynasty into surprising and penetrating light. Unforgettable.” -- Denise Kiernan, New York Times best-selling ...
